Thinking of othersChristmas is a time for giving, so let us take this opportunity to look back and reflect upon just a few of the charities and groups our students have helped raise money for over the past four months:

Children in Need (non school uniform) £1800 East Cheshire Hospice (Dragons’ Den team) £830 Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and Click Sargent (Harefield Charity Day) £1200 British Heart Foundation (Year 8 Skipathon) £819.74 Shine (Chloe Ward) £100 MIND (Izzy Whalen and Izzy Simpson) £245 Dementia (Ellie Harris and Molly Cunningham) £1200 North West Air Ambulance - bottle top appeal Syria Relief (clothes and goods collection).

We actively encourage all students to get involved in fundraising activities for both local and international charities. Not only do the charities benefit but so do our students, whether it be from a sense of achievement, working as part of a team, confronting a challenge or their development of empathy. We hope to see even more students volunteering their time in 2016 to help raise money and awareness for charitable causes.

Wishing you a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year from the students, staff and Governors of Wilmslow High School.

No Christmas story told againNo kings, no shepherds, no wise men,No guiding star to BethlehemTo help them on their way.

For sixty million now displacedBy war and persecution’s hateA never-ending human raceIs all they’ll have today.

Some paid their thousand dollar feeTo risk their lives upon the seaThe price of being a refugeeSo cruelly on display.

Those sunken boats when thousands diedThat broken lorry’s endless rideIts human cargo dead insideDumped by the motorway.

Those crammed en route in BudapestBewildered, waiting, anchorlessSome took the train then walked the restSome perished anyway.

You close your borders in defenceWant Donald Trump for presidentAnd build your razor-wire fenceTo push the tide away.

No guiding star upon the treeJust something begging you and meTo salvage our humanityAnd look, and think, and pray.

This morning in the Whole School Assembly, Assistant Headteacher, Mr Norris, read the following poem that he had written:

Dragons’ Den 2015On Monday, our Year 10 business students returned to Manchester Airport to feed back to the Dragons on their two months of enterprise. With fifteen schools in the competition, products were varied, ranging from simple sweet cones and popcorn to labour intensive glassware (created from kiln melted beer bottles).

Priestnall High School deservedly took the prize this year with their cookie making kits, having made a huge £4100 profit in just two months of trading! (I wonder if Santa is putting a kit in every stocking this Christmas!) The WHS team, once again, did us proud creating a net profit of £830 for East Cheshire Hospice with their mobile phone pamper kits and Santa Sleighs.

Students have worked hard sourcing supplies, creating promotional materials, organising events and the hardest part of all – engaging with the public to create the much needed sales. We have learnt the importance of team work, the benefit of local sourcing and the effect on the bottom line of discounting.

Once again thank you to Kieran Loynton and Rob Sawyer, business mentors, who supported our students this year. Over £14,000 was raised by the Manchester Airport project for our local hospices. Thank you to all teachers, parents and friends who supported the project.

Students in the team: Amy Loynton, Brad Hart, George Collier, Maddison Gill, Harry Hughes, Becky Thornley and Callan O’Brien

Wilmslow High School supports refugeesWilmslow High School students are support-ing the plight of Syrian refugees with their harvest appeal this term. Students have gathered a large amount of donated clothes, shoes and tinned goods from other students and their parents and families in the week-long appeal in October/November. Local churches also joined in the appeal by having drop-off points in their buildings.

The supplies are now on their way to help Syrian refugees survive the winter.

A massive thank you to everybody who sup-ported this appeal during the term - staff, stu-dents, Rev. Smith, Rev. Rhodes and the local churches. It is of course very poignant at this time of year to remember that there are still so many in need.

Festive reading rewardsStudents in Years 7, 8 and 9 have been spending even more time reading over the last couple of weeks.

Our Festive Reading Rewards incentive has been extremely popular, with over twenty students clocking up an impressive 1000 pages since the challenge was launched on the 7th December! Prizes have included limited edition ‘Reading Champion’ wristbands, coveted house badges and on 18th December our top six readers will be awarded with an exclusive reading trophy.

We hope our students continue to invest lots of time reading during the festive period!

Community action unitOn Thursday 10th December the BTEC Group (Tamsin Gresty, Chloe Ward, Ruhee Khan, George Fielder Pemberton, Chloe Gowans and Olly Conway) visited Brookview Nursing Home in Aderley Edge as part of our Community Action Unit.

We handed out flyers to people at Brookview and invited them to come and celebrate the start of Christmas with us at the Coffee and Carols Concert.

It was a great morning as we had a chance to talk to the residents and it was good to see some of them again at the concert this week.
