Stranger Danger Dear Parents, There has been a lot of fear in our community recently around ‘stranger danger’ with many incidents being reported in the media. Last fortnight, there was a local offsite incident involving some of our school families. This has brought the issue of child safety very close to home. Although nobody was harmed, it has brought about the need to be alert and to know what to do as students and parents, when confronted with unsafe situations. As part of its continuing commitment to the ongoing safety of our children, Sacred Heart School has this year renewed its commitment to Kidsmatter. Kidsmatter is a framework that builds on work that is already being done to support students’ mental health and wellbeing. The school has completed surveys, established an action team and will provide professional learning for staff in term 3. There are four components to Kidsmatter to be worked through over the next two years. Stage one includes the reviewing and auditing of programs for use in our school community. One program being reviewed is the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum. This child safety resource consists of classroom lessons for use in Foundation– 6 and includes teacher, parent and curriculum leader’s information. In the short term, last week classroom teachers were instructed to discuss stranger danger with their class. Teachers discussed safety tips about keeping safe in different situations where strangers are present. When events occur close to the school, IRIS alerts (Incident Reporting Information System) of local incidents are shared with staff. challenge to balance between treating the children with ‘cotton wool’ and giving those experiences that will build their resilience. These tips are useful in minimising the chance of being a victim but there are no guarantees. Keeping children safe is about being vigilant and looking for foreseeable dangers. A balance is required to avoid scaring your child and creating nightmares. Every child is different and unique and parents, as your child’s first teacher, you will best know how to approach this with your child. As I was discussing last week in this editorial, it is about opening a dialogue with your child and talking about safe and unsafe times. If at any time you or your child is in an unsafe position, call 000. The worst that can happen is that you feel embarrassed, the best that can happen is that you are saving a life. As always, your child’s teacher, Jan Morice or myself are available if you would like to discuss this further. MS GRAINNE DOHERTY 3/4G

I wish to advise that Ms Grainne Doherty will be finishing employment at our school on Friday 13 June, to return to Ireland, where she will be married. Ms Brooke Davis will be replacing Grainne and will begin on Tuesday 10 June for her induction into the school. Please discuss this with your child in order to minimise disruption to your family. We wish Grainne and her fiancé Jamie a wonderful life together at this very exciting time for them.

SIBLINGS AND NEW ENROLMENTS FOR 2015 2015 enrolments are now open and will close at the end of June. If you have a younger child to enrol into our school for 2015 please collect an enrolment form from the school office or download a form from our website. The next school tour for new families is on Thursday 5 June from 2.10pm to 3.10pm and Wednesday 18 June from 9.15am to 10.15am. If you know of any families who wish to enrol in our school, or if you have another child who will be attending Sacred Heart next year, please pass on this information.

WHOLE SCHOOL PHOTOS The whole school photo was taken on 28 May. You may still purchase this photo by returning your envelope with payment to the school office by Tuesday 3 June. There are envelopes at the school office should you need one.
