FROM THE PRINCIPAL
I t hardly seems possible that we are at the end of another school year. All the students are a year
older, most are an inch taller, and hopefully everyone is at least a “foot” wiser.
You may ask, “A „foot‟ wiser”, what is that? Well, it is nonsensical and it is not. Distance is a
good analogy for the progress we make in learning. I like it because it is definite, it is measurable and
it is observable. If each of you think back to the beginning of this year, there are things that you can
do now that you couldn‟t then. There are things now that you understand that you had no idea about,
or a wrong idea about at the beginning of the year. So, acquiring learning and wisdom are like a
journey and the distance we travel is ever growing. How far we will travel is up to us as individuals.
What interesting places we will go in our search for knowledge is up to us. This Search for
Knowledge is one trip that no one can force you on and no one can decide for you when it is over. It is
up to you. As we get ready to take our summer break, I hope that you continue on your learning
journey, observing what is around you, reading, listening to what people have to say, It is all part of
the great lifelong adventure of becoming as “big” as you can be.
Wishing you a great final week in school and happy summer holidays!

FIELD TRIP TO TAO ART GALLERY……
O n Monday, 5th May 2014, Grade 5 students of Art and Photography Group visited Tao Art
Gallery, Worli, Mumbai to have a better understanding of the ongoing UOI “Self
Expression”. Tao Art Gallery is very open-minded towards any creative expression and
emphasizes on powerful and innovative presentation of artistic creativity, building a thought provoking
experience for all their viewers and inviting dialogues on culture, aesthetics and tradition of visual arts.
Mentor : Nahida Khan
Students’ Reflections……….
We thank Miss Nahida for taking us to Tao Art Gallery as it was a good learning experience for us. We
learnt that Artwork contains many different elements, forms and matter. Not one artist can be compared
with another because every artist is unique in their very own way. It was an amazing experience for all
of us!-------- Shree and Dev (Grade 5 )
We interviewed Mr. Rajan, an artist and it was good learning experience for all of us. He explained
about the Artworks which were displayed in the gallery and he also addressed our queries. He told us
that, “Artwork is not limited and never will. Many people look at artists as weird people with nothing
better to do but in reality they are unique, creative individuals with a meaning in life”.

G rade 5 students are expected and guided to achieve the learner profile traits directly and objectively
or as a concurrent happening.
At the beginning of every unit after the introduction, I tell the students to point out one learner
profile attribute, among the ones chosen for the unit that they would like to intentionally achieve. They then
do everything within their means to try and achieve. We gather evidence, observe and follow their journey
through the unit, their work, their attitude, their choice of topics and ways of presentation. At the end of the
unit after the summative assessment, we hold a “graduation ceremony” in which they move their picture from
a former attribute to the one they have actively worked towards, if they qualify. If they fall short of achieving
the trait, they get commendations on how to work on it to really realize it and get to move to one they may
have achieved collaterally.

WRITTEN AND SPOKEN WORDS
T his year‟s PYP Exhibition theme is How we Express Ourselves. Part of
Grade 5 students have chosen to work on a sub-theme of expression:
Written and Spoken words. As such all , their activities are based on
that theme. Their first activity was a lecture with our very own writer:
Dr. Arundhati Hoskeri who spoke to the children on April 15 in the PYP
Library on: the benefits and uses of written and spoken words.
Thank you for spending some of
your golden time with us. We
learned so much especially
when you interacted with us
and gave examples of real life
events happening.
- Khushi (Grade 5)
Two days later, on April 17, Mr.
Pratik A. Dave, a scriptwriter
and choreographer came to RBK
to teach the same students about
t h e f a s c i na t i ng a r t o f
scriptwriting. From the story line
to the finished script, Mr. Dave‟s
approach showed us how every
subject can be turned into an
engaging script…
“Thank you for your guidance regarding how a script is written… The method was
new and very unique for me.”- Urja (Grade 5)

O n Monday April 28, the same Grade 5 students hopped on a school bus to visit the NCPA, the
magnificent National Centre for the Performing Arts. The students learned about the vision of
Mr. Jamshed BhaBha for having a Centre to highlight India‟s talent and also welcome
international talent. They zigzagged through the Centre seeing all 5 theatres and stages. Miss Divina
was our very informative hostess.
The students came back just in time for lunch after which all of Grade 5 was invited to visit Mr.
Shrikant Puranik’s art room for a lecture on art and theatre.
Once we stepped into the class we were talking about what art is and the art which was in the past and
present.
We answered questions and also gave examples. I loved it when sir took different objects and described
that anything is art. I enjoyed and had a lot of fun… Urja Hansraj

FIELD TRIP TO THE ASIATIC LIBRARY
O n Tuesday, May 6 all of Grade 5 went on a field trip to visit the Asiatic Society of Bombay’s
famous research library, established in 1804 and situated at Mumbai‟s Horniman Circle.
I was very excited to go to the Asiatic Library. I met my guide Miss Kavita. I learnt new things about my
topic especially Written Words!! I thought I would just see some very old amazing books by some famous
authors.
When I reached there I met my guide Miss Kavita. There I got an opportunity to see very old
newspapers of the year 1913 and of course some very old books. We came to know that this Library
also has some special rooms; we could only visit the Reading room.
I saw a lady sitting in the Reading room and I asked her a few questions and I discovered she is a member
of this Library. She is not exactly a Painter but she works and improves those Indian paintings we see in
the museums and she comes here to research about Indian paintings.
Lastly she told us about the history of this Library like first it was called the Literacy Society and in 1804
they started with Sanskrit books only. But the most wonderful fact was that this Library approximately
has 2 lakh books. I also discovered that this Library is only used for research purposes and kids below 18
years are not allowed here.
Ms Diane (Madame L.M.)
I achieved and discovered lot of things from this trip and thank my mentor Miss Diane (Madame L.M.) a
lot for organising this trip for us.
- Khushi Parikh (Grade 5)
The whole class went to The Asiatic library where we learnt how it is maintained and what types of books
are there. The most fascinating thing was the structures of the funders. I had a lot of fun. -Urja

W ednesday morning April 7, the spoken and written word
students had the opportunity to sit with our Principal
Mr. Edward Robinson as he delved into their last few weeks
as PYP students. He based his talk on two learner profiles: Caring and
Principled and how both these are reflected in the written and spoken
word.
The man who does not read good books has no
advantage over the man who cannot read.

INTERNATIONAL MINDEDNESS IN FRENCH LANGUAGE AT PYP LEVEL
T he PYP French curriculum tries to incorporate as many UOI topics of each grade level in its
very own. Within its own curriculum as well, it follows each and every learner profile in a
creative and interesting manner. To give an example, when a topic like “supermarket” has
been selected by the homeroom teacher, the French teacher links her instruction under the very same
title, but using her own ideas, provides them with matter and material that educate the students from
the foreign language perspective at that appropriate age level. The students have to inquire into
various cultural aspects of marketing (names of the supermarkets/market), in France and products and
produce that are typical of the regions in France. This makes them informed on “what to buy and
where to buy”. Using the trans-disciplinary skills of communication (reading, writing and role-
playing), they write a dialogue and use communication skills along with the vocabulary taught to
make a dialogue between buyer and seller. The students each present their dialogue with confidence
and courage, while their peers listen with open-mindedness. In reflecting on their peers‟ performance,
the others investigate into their own efforts and try to incorporate new and better ideas. Lastly, during
the reading/role-play activity, they respect their each others ideas and opinions which are incorporated
without prejudice. Likewise, under each and every unit, while giving importance to the PYP attitudes,
the learner profiles are consistently emphasized for establishing their importance even while learning
a foreign language.
