Increasing supply of energy is required to cater the rapideconomic growth, which has posed a huge burden on thecurrent energy infrastructure and the environment. Theexcessive consumption of limited fossil fuel tends to dryup the energy sources and causes severe environmentalpollution and global warming. Such challenging issues havemotivated the scientific community to seek next generationenergy sources and to develop innovative methodologies toaddress the key environmental issues to realize a sustainablefuture. Nanostructured materials possess intriguing physicaland chemical properties and have recently emerged as idealplatforms to solvemany key challenges in energy (e.g., energyconversion (solar cells and fuel cells) and energy storage(lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors)) and environ-ment (e.g., green catalysts, sensors, pollution prevention,treatment, and remediation). In particular, nanostructuredmaterials feature with controllable size, shape, composition,structure, and surface, which are difficult or impossibleto achieve in their bulk materials. Such unique featuresof nanostructured materials can be further tailored andengineered to specifically tackle a particular energy and/orenvironmental challenge.
In this special issue, 14 original research papers arepresented, bringing over recent advances and R&D activitiesin developing nanostructured materials for groundbreakingapplications in energy and environment. In the paper entitled“CuO-In2O3 core-shell nanowire based chemical gas sensors,”X. Li et al. reported the synthesis of CuO-In
2O3core-shell
nanowires, which exhibit improved sensing performance tohydrogen and propane as a result of the coated porousIn2O3shell and the p-n junction formed at the core-shell
interface. A plasmonic effect of Ag nanoparticles in thedye-sensitized solar cells has been confirmed in the paper“Solution processed silver nanoparticles in dye-sensitizedsolar cells” by Berginc et al. In the paper entitled “Highphotocatalytic activity of Fe3O4-SiO2-TiO2 functional particleswith core-shell structure,” C. Xue et al. reported a novelmethod of synthesizing Fe
3O4-SiO2-TiO2functional parti-
cles with high photocatalytic activity under visible light. Inthe paper entitled “Structural evolution and electrochemicalperformance of Li2MnSiO4/C nanocomposite as cathode mate-rial for Li-ion batteries,” M. Wang et al. reported that the sol-gel method synthesized Li
2MnSiO
4/C nanocomposite with
a large reversible capacity of 257mAh g−1 and good ratecapability. P. Yu et al. reported Y-doped ZnO nanorods byhydrothermal method and their acetone gas sensitivity. Inthe rest of papers in this special issue, M. Israelowitz et al.reported spin coated plasmonic nanoparticle interfaces forphotocurrent enhancement in thin film Si solar cells, F.Wang et al. reported the preparation and performance ofinorganic heat insulation panel based on sepiolite nanofibers,and they also reported the preparation and performanceof cis-polybutadiene rubber composite materials reinforcedby organic modified palygorskite nanomaterials. J. Xu et al.reported the field emission properties of the graphene-doublewalled carbon nanotube hybrid films prepared by vacuum

filtration and screen printing, Z. Dai et al. reported the devel-opment of amperometric laccase biosensor through immo-bilizing enzyme in magnesium-containing mesoporous sil-ica sieve (Mg-MCM-41)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix,L. Li et al. reported pores and microanalysis of microbe-inspired nano-CaCO
3cementing sand columns, P. Zhang et
al. reported a study on notch sensitivity of fracture propertiesof concrete containing nano-SiO
2particles and fly ash,
X. Shi et al. reported mesoporous alumina microfibers insitu transformation from AACH fibers and the adsorptionperformance, and T. Wu et al. reported electroreduction ofcopper dichloride powder to copper nanoparticles in an ionicliquid.
We are pleased to see the progress on design, synthesis,characterization, and applications of nanostructured materi-als in energy and environment.We hope that this special issuewill promote further investigation on advanced nanostruc-turedmaterials to develop the next generation energy sourcesand innovative solutions to realize a sustainable future.
