A Message From Our President
Lansing Chapter Members,
I hope everyone’s New Year is off to a good start! The Board and planning
committees are well underway in mapping out the remaining 2016 program year.
There are a lot of fun and exciting things coming down the pipeline and we want to
make sure to keep the membership abreast of the opportunities to get involved.
The first being a student chapter formation. The Lansing Chapter has started
preparations in forming a student chapter on the Michigan State University
Campus. This student chapter will be the first of its kind at MSU with its mission to
provide students with an understanding of what internal audit is, the industries
involved in the IIA, and how the IIA can help them network with their future
employer. Our very own junior Board Member Abigail Andrews will head the
student chapter as President with a vision of a formation of a full student board.
Our hopes are for the student chapter to have 4-5 meetings during the semester
where auditors come in and speak about different topics. There will, of course, be
food provided at each meeting. Students will also have the option to attend an IIA
meeting (not a student meeting) at a reduced cost. We would also like to get an
idea of each student's preferred industry to work in and, if the student is interested,
match them up with a professional in that industry to speak with one-on-one.
Our next scheduled event is a CAE panel discussion in March. The date of the event
has not been nailed down as of yet, but planning is well underway. Detailed
information on this session, as it is decided, will be communicated and made
available on the chapter website. I wanted to have everyone start formalizing
questions on what they would want to ask a CAE in the different industries, such as
Finance, Government, Insurance and Manufacturing. Focus areas will be improving
productivity of the audit process using technology, enhancing relevance, successful
integrated auditing, and maintaining relationships with staff, Executive
Management and the Audit Committee. Please keep a look out for more
information to come on this event.
Stay warm my friends!
Sincerely,
Emily

Job Interviews Coming Up? 5 Interview Questions You Should Ask Potential Employers
IIA Lansing Courier • Lansing Chapter, Central Region, District 2 • January 2016 Page 5
A job interview is a two-way street. Not only do you, as the interviewee, have to be prepared to answer interview ques-tions, you should also plan on asking your own questions dur-ing job interviews.
If you do, you’ll have plenty of company. Eighty-four percent of professionals responding to a recent Accountemps survey said they ask hiring managers questions during job interviews. Here are five productive interview questions to serve up the next time you find yourself in the role of interviewee:
1. What’s a typical day like for someone in this position? The answer to this question will be helpful in at least two ways: You’ll get crucial information about what your day-to-day duties would be if hired, and you’ll gain insight on how well your prospective manager understands exactly what the job entails.
2. Who was in the role before me, and why did they leave? The interviewee should not expect the full scoop on the previous employee’s history, of course, but learning more about why the position is open will provide a better idea of whether you’ll have the tools and support you’ll need to succeed if you eventual-ly accept the job.
3. What qualities do you think would make someone successful in this position? The answer to this question will not only help you get a handle on whether the job would be a good fit for you but also give you a chance to emphasize your skills and traits that match up well with what the company needs.
4. What do you see as the greatest opportunities for the company in the next several years? This question shows that you’re interested in more than just the short term, and the response will shed light on the company’s leadership style and plans for the future.
5. What do you like most about working here? In general, it’s not appropriate for you, the interview-ee, to put the hiring manager in the hot seat. But this question brings a human element to job interviews while still keeping the focus on the workplace and how individual employees can gain career satisfaction from contributing to the firm’s mission.
Being ready for questions directed your way during job interviews means being able to respond with in-formative answers, but it also means being able to recognize when the time is right to pose your own ques-tions. Hiring managers understand this, and they’ll be attuned to how well you seize opportunities to ask what you need to know. The interview questions you ask may well turn out to be as important as the ones you answer.

Chapter Achievement Program (CAP)
CAP Progress Report
Do any of your internal audit activities earn Chapter Achievement
Program (CAP) points for your Lansing Chapter of the IIA? What is
CAP, why is it important and what can you do to help?
The Chapter Achievement Program (CAP) is designed by the Institute
of Internal Auditors to guide chapters for developing quality programs
and completing administrative duties to ensure it is meeting its
obligations to its membership. Points are awarded for each activity
based upon the activity in accordance with IIA guidelines. The goal is
to provide valuable professional activities and development
opportunities to the membership and earn CAP points while doing it!
Certain activities that are conducted by membership may qualify. If
any of your activities qualify or you would like to know whether they
qualify, please contact Ryan O’Rourke at [email protected].
There are four performance levels that can be achieved.
BRONZE - 685 CAP Points
SILVER - 1,060 CAP Points
GOLD - 1,560 CAP Points
PLATINUM - This is a special level created to recognize
chapters that attain GOLD status for 10 of 11 consecutive years.
QUALIFYING ACTIVITIES

or other IIA meetings

mittee of the IIA

The Lansing Chapter hopes to continue to hold the designation of PLATINUM. Chapter Achievement
Points (CAP) reported in December 2015 is 1302. The goal for CAP points to maintain the current designa-
tion is a minimum of 1560 each calendar year. Retaining our status is of great importance, however, it is
more important that we offer the membership valuable services and we as members do our obligatory role
within our organizations and communities by reaching out, educating and proving our value. Be sure to no-
tify Ryan O’Rourke at [email protected] if you have any CAP points to report.
Points are reported to the IIA on the 10th of each month covering three areas:
Service to Members (primarily involves attendance at monthly meetings, conferences and seminars);
Service to the Program (involves areas including Advocacy for the IIA and involvement with Academic
areas such as student groups); and
