A Message From Our President

Dear Lansing Chapter Members,

May has arrived, and summer is just around the corner – how exciting! The IIA

Lansing Chapter is wrapping up the 2016 – 2017 Chapter year, and with that we have

two remaining programs you will not want to miss.

May 4th brings presenters from Deloitte & Touche LLP focusing on Cyber –

Emerging Threats and Recourses. This meeting will be held at the MSUFCU

Community Room in East Lansing.

Celebrate with your Chapter Internal Audit Awareness month in May. The

IIA.org has lots of information, toolkits and guides on how to help your team

build awareness.

Our annual IIA/WMISACA IT focused seminar on May 25th will bring numerous

topics and speakers to LCC West, in Lansing for 8 hours of CPE for only $100.00

or $50.00 for those who register in the Early Bird period.

As we close this program year, I have been reflecting on my time as President as well

as being a leader for the Institute of Internal Auditors. There are a number of things I

want to express my gratitude for and wish that I could devote more to saying “Thank

you”, but I’ll spare you the reading and time and will be short and sweet.

First off, thank you to ALL of the volunteers (friends) that have helped to teach and

mentor me throughout my time on the Board. It has been a learning experience that

was fun, exciting, and rewarding. It’s not easy having a new comer that is eager and

wants to shake it up, but I was welcomed and supported, which made it even easier

to continue our mission and give back to our members.

Secondly, I want to thank the members for coming to the meetings, submitting

feedback, showing support in all the ways you do. The Chapter leaders take on the

roles to serve YOU. Our mission is to better enhance and advocate for Internal

Auditors. There is a lot that goes into organizing, coordinating, and planning.

Because of our membership and the desire to make this Chapter prevail, you

continue to step into Leadership roles, suggesting presenters and speakers, and

advocate to your co-workers and friends about the benefits of our Chapter. Your

dedication and attitudes are noticed. This is truly an exceptional membership – and I

want to say a sincere, Thank you!

George, Jennifer, Sydney, and Melissa from EY Internal Audit Group

Rick and Bob from State of Michigan

“Every day is different than yesterday. You are

always learning new things. Your life consists of

lots of surprise and challenge.” At April, we in-

vited internal audit professionals from both EY

and State of Michigan to come to speak to us. It

was interesting that they both emphasize the

combination of internal audit and technology.

The technology will eventually transform the

way we deal with data and risk assessment.

Thus, it is important to understand how data is

processing and develop the sense of professional

curiosity. Disruption occurs in various indus-

tries, such as driverless car for automotive indus-

try, launch payment banks from telecom compa-

nies for banking industry, and reinvestment on

health clinic for the pharmacy industry. Amazon

Alexa and Google Home are two innovative

products that spark the interest in data pro-

cessing. Also, cyber risk, data analytics, and ro-

bot process automation gradually impact the

risk modeling.

Internal audit specialists often interact with peo-

ple from different departments and specialties.

How to communicate, collaborate and manage

projects becomes extremely important for both

efficiency and effectiveness. Especially, it is often

the case that there is a gap between science and

business worlds. But, this is also the best part of

internal audit. Always learning and growing!

How can students prepare for the real world? All

speakers recommend that we can take some

computer science or technology courses based

on the recent trend and, most importantly, culti-

vate analytical skills as well as an open mindset.

Internal auditors audit things critical to the or-

ganization and help the company become the

best it can be!

6 Keys to Workplace Happiness for Finance Workers

The numbers don’t look so good when it comes to accounting and finance workers’ level of happiness, according to a new Robert Half report. IT’S TIME WE ALL WORK HAPPY.®, which focuses on eight professional fields, found that employees in finance, accounting and financial services were among those least happy on the job. They were also the ones with the lowest level of interest in their work.

Does this mean accounting and finance professionals are doomed to live without job satisfaction? Far from it. But if the shoe fits for you, it may mean taking career happiness into your own hands. Here are six steps you could take if workplace happiness seems about as impossible as zero-calorie doughnuts or a perfect score on the CPA exam:

1. Scrutinize the reasons you’re not happy. You analyze a lot of datasets, but have you ever evaluated your own happiness level? Compile a list of what’s stopping you from being satisfied in your job. Perhaps you’d rather work less with clients and more with big data, or maybe you’d like to finally earn that certification and boost your salary. Making a tangible list can help. After all, you can’t fix something until you know what the prob-lem is.

2. Take a well-deserved break. In our report, only about 65 percent of respondents working in account-ing, finance and financial services reported that they have a healthy work-life balance. Yes, that’s a majority, but it’s near the bottom of the list compared to other professions. Additionally, almost half of those responding to a separate survey said they don’t use all their paid time off because they’re afraid of work piling up while they’re away. Not enough play makes for stressed-out accountants. So be sure to use your vacation time to recharge your batteries and come back happier. Ask colleagues to cover for you so you’re not overwhelmed when you return. You can pay back the favor later.

3. Connect with colleagues. When you enjoy the people you work with, heading to the offi ce each morn-ing can be a pleasure, even if you’re not 100 percent enamored with your job. Our research finds that people with strong workplace friendships are as much as two and a half times happier than those without. Don’t have any work buddies? Then take the initiative to create strong relationships. Ask them to join you for lunch, or get a group together after quitting time. And don’t bow out of work-related social functions because you’re too tired or too shy. If respondents to our survey are any indication, chances are good that the more you mix and mingle, your level of workplace happiness will increase.

4. Be honest with your boss. Your manager may never know your workplace happiness has hit the skids if you don’t say anything. Do both of you a favor by bringing up this sensitive subject. Before you do, first brain-storm some ways you could be happier in your role, keeping in mind that your aim is to create a win-win situation for the company as well as yourself. Then sit down with your boss to discuss setting career goals and present ideas for greater job satisfaction. For example, if you’re an experienced bookkeeper who feels ready for a staff account-ant position, ask whether there will be any openings in the near future and, if so, to keep you in mind.

5. Make a career move. If you’re in an unhappy slump because you no longer love your career, it may be time to launch a job search. There are plenty of nontraditional accounting career paths, such as environmental or entertainment accounting, that may align better with your passions. Our happiness study finds that one of the top factors in workplace happiness is interesting and meaningful work. If you’re feeling especially bold, you could even relocate and make a fresh start. Do some research to find the city that best suits your needs.

6. Take the consulting route. Tired of the 9-to-5 and lack of autonomy? Consider your consulting. This career move allows you to work on a contractual basis, meaning you would have the opportunity to dive headfirst into an array of projects. As an added bonus, you pick your clients and get to work for different companies — and make new networking contacts — with each gig, which could add much-needed variety to your accounting career.

Kick the accounting blues by taking steps today to amp up your happiness quotient. Job satisfaction is within your control and your reach.

Chapter Achievement Program (CAP)

CAP Progress Report

Do any of your internal audit activities earn Chapter Achievement

Program (CAP) points for your Lansing Chapter of the IIA? What is

CAP, why is it important and what can you do to help?

The Chapter Achievement Program (CAP) is designed by the Institute

of Internal Auditors to guide chapters for developing quality programs

and completing administrative duties to ensure it is meeting its

obligations to its membership. Points are awarded for each activity

based upon the activity in accordance with IIA guidelines. The goal is

to provide valuable professional activities and development

opportunities to the membership and earn CAP points while doing it!

Certain activities that are conducted by membership may qualify. If

any of your activities qualify or you would like to know whether they

qualify, please contact Ryan O’Rourke at [email protected].

There are four performance levels that can be achieved.

BRONZE - 685 CAP Points

SILVER - 1,060 CAP Points

GOLD - 1,560 CAP Points

PLATINUM - This is a special level created to recognize

chapters that attain GOLD status for 10 of 11 consecutive years.

QUALIFYING ACTIVITIES

The Lansing Chapter hopes to continue to hold the designation of PLATINUM. Chapter Achievement

Points (CAP) reported in April was 1154. The goal for CAP points to maintain the current designation is a

minimum of 1560 each calendar year. Retaining our status is of great importance, however, it is more im-

portant that we offer the membership valuable services and we as members do our obligatory role within

our organizations and communities by reaching out, educating and proving our value. Be sure to notify

Ryan O’Rourke at [email protected] if you have any CAP points to report.

Points are reported to the IIA on the 10th of each month covering three areas:

Service to Members (primarily involves attendance at monthly meetings, conferences and seminars);

Service to the Program (involves areas including Advocacy for the IIA and involvement with Academic

areas such as student groups); and
