Chairman’s Report Autumn 2019
By the time that you receive this copy of the “Baddow Times” in September, summer will be coming to an end and autumn will be creeping up on us, so as I write
this at the beginning of August in order to meet the publishing
deadlines, it is somewhat difficult to predict what activities will have successfully
taken place. However, I am sure, that if previous years are anything to go by, the Play in the Park sessions run by the City Council in our Recreation Ground, will have been well attended and enjoyed by all the children (and Mums!) who went along. Just as the playscheme which was run by ourselves at the end of July beginning of August has been a complete success with requests for it to continue next year and possibly be for two weeks instead of one. In mentioning the Recreation Ground, I would like to say that we are, in Great Baddow, very fortunate to have such a facility, with the Parish Council keen to promote its use. Just a reminder if you haven’t visited lately, we have a Toddlers’ Play area which has just been refurbished with a new safety surface; an Outdoor Gym; play equipment for the over 10s
and free use of the all-weather surface tennis courts. We have acquired 3 picnic tables with a grant from Essex County Council’s micro grant, and the area by the two ponds is very pleasant, with wildlife, not only the ducks but dragon flies and other flora and fauna. Earlier, we were very pleased to host and support the Baddow Races organised by the Chelmsford Rotary Club, and from the proceeds, were given £1,500 to present to our chosen Charities, Kids Inspire, Little Havens and J’s Hospice. Other Parish Council activities have seen improvement in the drainage and a new roadway at the Lawn Cemetery, and we understand that our other recent innovation, the defibrillator at the Vineyards, has been used to good effect. In the previous copy of the “Baddow Times” we included a page for your suggestions to improve Great Baddow and many thanks to the people who responded. The door is not closed, so please if anything comes to mind, get in touch with Clare Milligan our Parish Clerk. Finally, at the end of June, Elaine Bryan, the Deputy Clerk, retired and has moved to be nearer her family, so we said goodbye and thanked her for many years of service and commitment to the Council. We say hello to Ginette Phillips who has stepped into Elaine’s shoes and welcome her to the Parish, as we all look forward to working with her.

12 GREAT BADDOW PARISH COUNCIL MAGAZINE
When I look at flowers I really do feel as if my heart is being lifted; it improves my state of mind instantly. As I have an impaired sense of smell, I don’t benefit from their fragrance, which is an added bonus for those whose olfactory organ works properly.
I’m sure these qualities have a similar effect on many men too, so I am wondering whey we see so few men in flower clubs. There are certainly men involved at the highest levels of floral design – we see them demonstrating at our clubs and exhibiting at major shows – but in most Flower Clubs the vast majority of members are female.
So many men enjoy gardening and raising beautiful flowers, it would be great if more of them became interested in flower arranging. If you are giving flowers as a gift, they don’t have to come from a supermarket; you could arrange some seasonal flowers and foliage from your own garden and humbly say ‘Oh they are just from my garden.’
Anyone who would like to know how to make the best of garden or shop flowers, try coming to Great Baddow Flower Club, which meets on the third Thursday of every month at 7.15pm for 7.45pm in the Parish Hall (except for January and August.) You can try it out by coming as a visitor, you
don’t need to join straight away.
We have demonstrations every month by flower arranging
experts, who are usually knowledgeable gardeners and often incorporate what they have grown. On those occasions you watch, admire and ask questions. We also have
workshops where you can make something attractive
under the guidance of a tutor.
‘Great Baddow Flower Club’ is on facebook, where you can see
arrangements done by club members and demonstrators. Posters are in place at local shops, library etc to tell you what’s on each month.
Flower arranging is creative, mentally relaxing and uplifting, so come and join us to find out more.

At their full council meeting last December, the Parish Council agreed to pursue participation in the Community Special Constable scheme, initially funding two special constables for Great Baddow. This will provide a visible police presence in the parish.
Things did not happen quite as quickly as expected, but the Special Constabulary is now recruiting for Great Baddow. As a Community Special Constable you could play a part in keeping your neighbourhood safe and make a real difference in our village.
A Great Baddow Community Special Constable will:1. Be integrated into a Community Policing Team.2. Start and end their duty as close to their community as possible, potentially from another agency’s premises.3. Spend the majority of their time within Great Baddow’s neighbourhoods.4. Be visible and accessible in the local community on uniformed foot or cycle patrol.
5. Help address local issues and priorities as informed by the Parish Council and police intelligence-led tasking.6. Patrol hot spots identified through intelligence or which have been deemed to be priority areas.7. Respond to police-related incidents within Great Baddow.8. Engage with the local community and support further recruitment of Specials.9. Attend suitable Parish Council meetings where available to do so.10. Have regard to the Council’s aims and objectives in their voluntary service.
So if you’re interested in helping to look after our village, please submit an application. Great Baddow would love to have you as part of the community team.
You can find full details and make an application on the Essex Police website – visit www.essex.police.uk/Specials/GreatBaddow to find out more.

Charity Donations from Baddow RacesThe Edmund Carr Great Baddow Charity Races, organised by Chelmsford Mildmay and Chelmsford Rivermead Rotary Clubs, took place again this year on May 19th. Once again this was a great success and Great Baddow Parish Council was pleased to continue to support the event by making its recreation ground available and providing the extra toilet facilities required for the day.
We were delighted to hear that this year the Races raised £17,000 for charity, with a further £14,000 raised by the runners themselves for their own choice of good causes.
As a sponsor of the Races, the Parish Council is able to make a nomination for a donation to a charity or charities of its choice. For many years the Council supported the League of Friends of Hargrave House in this way; Hargrave House was an Essex County Council home within our parish for disabled children and the League of Friends raised money for facilities and equipment above and beyond the normal County Council provision.
However, the home was closed by the County Council and the League of Friends had to be disbanded.
Some parish councillors also supported the League of Friends for many years by helping to man a water table on the 10 mile route. I am delighted to report that councillors and friends still support the Races by continuing to man this water table, despite the closure of the children’s home.
Following the closure of Hargrave House, the Council decided to support other charities that also helped children and young people. Therefore this year we were pleased to nominate Kids Inspire, Little Havens Hospice and J’s Hospice. Due to the great success of this year’s Races, Cllr Chris Shaw was delighted to receive cheques for £500 for each of these charities on behalf of the Parish Council at the charity presentation evening in July. Kids Inspire has in fact now become a local charity, having moved into Hargrave House during the summer, and we are very glad to see Hargrave House back in use to support young people and their families.Chris Shaw
Do you appreciate the ‘green environment’ of Great Baddow and Galleywood?Would you like to care for the ‘green environment’?Do you want to do something to combat global warming? If you have answered yes to the above why not join the Sunday section of Teg (The Environ-ment Group). We meet on the second Sunday afternoon of each month to do practical con-servation work at various sites in Great Baddow and Galleywood.
So what are we doing about global warming? One of the main causes of global warming is that we are steadily increasing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. Plants, especially trees and hedges, absorb CO2, so the more we have of them, the better chance we have of solving the climate crisis. Of course the work our group does only makes a minute difference, but with millions of groups like ours all over the world
planting trees and shrubs, the difference it will make is enormous.
Over the last 33 years, our group has planted trees and hedges in Baddow Hall Park, local schools, St. Michael’s churchyard, Jubilee Copse by the A12 in Galleywood and various other places. All together, probably an equivalent of at least one and a half miles of trees planted. We continue to look for places where more trees could be planted.

One of the aims of Sandon Woodturners is to promote the skills of woodturning in a comfortable, friendly environment. We have a purpose-designed unit incorporating demonstrating and seating areas as well as a self-contained shop adjacent to the tea and coffee bar. There is a comfortable area for the consumption of biscuits, or may be a doughnut if someone is celebrating a birthday. Although the club meets every Saturday apart from public holidays, this is not too unlikely as, with an active membership of 90 or so members, it is usually a new landmark for someone!
Details of the dates of all activities, future programme and outside events we attend are publicised on the Sandon Woodturners website (http://www.sandon-woodturners.co.uk/) as are photos and reports of past demonstrations. If web access is not available to you, Norman or Paul are always delighted to talk to any potential visitors and will provide access details for anyone who has not visited the club before. (Security considerations prevent us from publicising the exact location on the website.) A hard copy of the future programme can also be provided.
The programme of visiting turners reads like a who’s who of well known and respected demonstrators from different parts of the country and some also conduct master-classes over a weekend. Closed circuit television cameras and radio microphones ensure that all attendees can see and hear in detail the finer points of a demonstration. Most of the members have learnt, (or are still learning!) by watching these experts at work and listening to the advice they offer.
Members can borrow books on woodturning from our library of more than 200 books and can purchase woodturning materials from our excellent shop.
Our members have/have had a variety of careers – engineers, electricians, business people, milkman, cabinet makers, policemen, farmers, nurses, surgeon etc. We can usually find someone who can give advice/help on most subjects. We like to think of ourselves as being not just a woodturning club, but a social club too. Members are keen to help others if they can.
Comments from visiting demonstrators suggest that Sandon Woodturners have one of (possibly THE) best equipped and organised clubs in the country.
If you find it possible to make a visit, the experience could be most rewarding and few can resist joining as a member and enjoying a Saturday morning’s or afternoon’s or whole day’s great woodturning for the same entrance payment of just £10.
Our introductory offer:- As a first-time visitor, your visit will be entirely free!

The Group was founded in 1976 and since then has provided a voluntary car service for residents who need to visit surgeries, clinics, dentists, and hospitals, but who have difficulty with public transport. Our volunteers use their own cars providing a service from Monday to Friday. On average we arrange around 675 visits per year or about thirteen per week. We pay an allowance of 45p per mile and provide extra insurance.
For this valuable service to continue in the years ahead we would like to recruit more drivers of any age. Could you drive for the Great Baddow Community Care Group? Even if you have only limited time, we could use you when you are available for just one or two hours per week.
Please consider whether you could help us and feel free to call me for a confidential chat without any obligation to find out what is involved.

By the time you read this the league fixtures will have finished and Great Baddow Bowling Club will have had a mixed season. In the men’s league our B team gained promotion to Division 1 (which is the top division, no Premiership or Championship confusion here as in football) and will join the A team who will probably finish third. Our third team struggled a bit and were relegated to the fourth division.
There is a also a mixed gender league playing on Tuesdays and here our A team came runners-up in Division 1. Strangely enough, our C team is in a higher league than the B team and they came a creditable third in Division 2 but, unfortunately, the B team were relegated. On the plus side we also have a D team and they gained promotion to Division 5.
However, as they say, it’s not the winning but the taking part that’s important and it was another enjoyable season which isn’t over by any means. There is still a lot of bowling to look forward to and the club organises internal competitions mixing up the teams to give everyone a chance to shine. We join to play bowls but these end of season matches are an important part of the social side of the club.If this is whetting your appetite, Great Baddow Bowling Club is always on the lookout for new members and the free taster evenings continue
every Friday at 6pm where advice and coaching is given so why not come along and have a go.
Just wear flat soled shoes and everything else will be provided. You will be
made very welcome.
As part of our membership push we had a stall at the Great Baddow Run in May and we were delighted
that the Mayor of Chelmsford, Cllr Yvonne Spence and her husband John stopped by to
chat and try their hand at bowling, especially bearing in mind it was one of the mayor’s very last official visits before her term in office came to an end. John Spence had a very unusual style of delivery. He had a bowl in one hand and a beefburger in the other, presumably for his balance. I must try it some time, it may improve my play. Great fun and thanks to them both for visiting us.
For more information on aspect of the club contact our secretary Malcolm Field on 01245 473863 or 07534 712028 or by email: [email protected] or visit the website www.greatbaddowbowlingclub.co.uk
By Stan Keller The club was privileged to host the Area Finals of the Essex County Women’s Bowling Association. The winners went on to the National Finals at Leamington Spa, including our own Alison Smart in the singles.

The history of HalloweenTRICK OR TREAT
Halloween to most of us nowadays consists of trick or treating, apple bobbing and handing out sweets to tiny werewolves and miniature vampires, but the holiday itself has origins dating back thousands of years, to pagan times.
The annual celebration is believed to have both Celtic and Christian influences and can be traced back to the Celtic festival of Samhain which took place on the 31st October.
The Pre-Christian Celtic year was determined by the growing seasons and the end of summer and harvest was marked Samhain, which also marked the beginning of the winter. The Samhain festival was meant to symbolise the connection between the world of the living and the world of the dead.
The 31st of October was a night that ghosts of the dead would revisit the mortal world and their loved ones, large bonfires were lit in each village to help keep any evil spirits at bay, fires were also lit at people’s homes to ward off spirits and keep them warm during the winter.Romans had come and gone after their
invasion in 43AD, and now Britain
welcomed the First Saxon Warriors
and during the 5th century Britain had also welcomed a new religion, Christianity.
Christianity spread upwards from Kent with the arrival of Saint Augustine from Rome in 597 and inwards from the northern and western parts of Britain. This also brought a range of Christian Festivals to Britain, such as ‘All Hallows’ Day’, or ‘All Saints Day’, which was a day to remember those who had died standing for their beliefs.
All Hallows’ Day was originally celebrated on 13th May, but was moved to the 1st November in the 8th century to mimic the Celtic Samhain festival of the dead and replace it with a church approved celebration.
Eventually, the evening of Samhain became known as All-Hallows-eve which itself became Hallows Eve, later Hallowe’en and then as we know it today, Halloween. The idea of spirits and evil super natural beings being associated with Halloween has developed from the idea that this time of year was rather unique and magical, and many believed that the spirit world could make contact with the real world.
The 31st October is full of ghosts, ghouls and goblins all out to scare a poor soul and rake in the goodies, but have you ever wondered where the tradition of Halloween began?
32 GREAT BADDOW PARISH COUNCIL MAGAZINE
33GREAT BADDOW PARISH COUNCIL MAGAZINE
Are you ready to channel your inner Mike Wazowski and get your scare on this Halloween?
The tradition of carving faces and images into vegetables dates back to the Celts, as they wanted to light the way to their home for the good spirits. They did this by carving faces into turnips and squash - the
introduction of the pumpkin is a modern twist to this tradition.
Residents of Great Baddow can take part in a Halloween Bingo bonanza this year at their local Costa Coffee, based at Riverside Retail Park.
You can join in on a frightening and fun night of bingo with a raffle and bonus bingo games to be played! You can scare people with your Spooktacular outfits and have the chance to win a cash prize at the same time.
The evening begins at 7.30pm and will finish around 10.00pm and will cost you £10 per person for a book of 6 bingo games. All of the profits will go to The Lexi Doll Charity to support bereaved children through baby loss.
Tickets may be sold on the door but are subject to availability, if you wish to attend the best way will be to pre-book by messaging their Facebook page at ‘The Lexi Doll Charity’.

This year’s Summer Show, on a very warm afternoon, was a great success. There were large displays of fuchsias, dahlias and other flowers, delicious fruits and well grown vegetables.
In one part of the hall there was the fragrant scent of sweet peas. As well as all that, there were photos, crafts, cookery and floral arrangements to add interest. There were 520+ exhibits with 81 members of the Society taking part – the best for several years. The success of the show was down to the hard work of Eddie Cole and his team of helpers.
If you didn’t exhibit this time, why not consider having a try at the Autumn Show on Saturday 21st September in the Parish Hall. As usual, there will be classes for vegetables, fruit, flowers, floral art and cookery and preserves. There will be various talks in the Parish Hall at 7.30pm as we head towards autumn. These will include:-
• ‘The Art of the Botanical Illustrator’ by Nick Dobson on 12th September• The AGM. Followed by ‘Life as a Dairyman’ by Graham Collins’ on 10th October• ‘Soil Structure and Healthy Soil’ by Georg Lockwood on 14th November.
Don’t forget to visit the Trading Hut at the Vicarage Lane allotment site for compost, fertilizers, canes, labels, pots, trays and premium bird food at low prices. It is open from 9.30am to 11.30am every Saturday morning. For full details of all the activities of the Society please look at our website:-www.greatbaddow-horticultural.co.uk

Great Baddow’s Summer Playscheme Great Baddow Parish Council was delighted to deliver their annual, summer Playscheme for children between the ages of 6 to 11
The Council fund 10 x 2 ½ hour day-time sessions throughout a week within the summer holidays and this is totally FREE to all resident children of Great Baddow.
We had great numbers, as always, with over 70 children (and parents!) taking advantage of this unique club. All parents know how long the 6 weeks summer holiday can feel, so to have the guarantee of a whole week where the children can engage locally in FREE activities is very compelling and is why the Council is committed to offering this facility.
This year, the children had the opportunity to try Parkour (free running style gymnastics) and were also entertained by our resident magician, Papalarny for our final, party session. Unfortunately, our bouncy castle day had to be cancelled due to the inclement weather, but this did not put a stop to the fun, as the children got stuck into the indoor craft activities and were able to make some beautiful pieces.
Unlike many other children’s’ clubs, as our Playleader Tracey Peters explained, “the children are free to join in as much or little as they like as we always have outdoor games such as swingball and then the indoor crafts available. The sessions are completely child led”. This may explain why the children love it so much, one parent commenting that, “my daughter enjoys this club more than any other.”
All the comments from parents were highly positive, commending the staff, “who have all been so friendly” and stating that no changes are needed to future years as the scheme is “absolutely fantastic the way it is!”. The only recommendation was for more sessions as all the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves!
The Council would like to thank and congratulate all of the Playscheme Staff who performed their roles perfectly and made the playscheme such a success. The Council would also like to thank all of the children who behaved impeccably.
We hope to see you all again next year!Donna Tristram

Bonfire Night can bring such delight to some, but to a few including your pets it’s a night for scares and of fright. Fireworks can provide much entertainment so long as everyone follows the right safety procedures and remembers that when misused they are hugely dangerous.
Here at CommunityAd we’ve consulted with Kent Fire & Rescue Service for their tips and safety guidelines. Firstly, they inform us that “a simple sparkler can burn up to a temperature of 2,000 degrees centigrade, so they should never be given to children under the age of five.”
“By far the safest way to enjoy these seasonal activities is to attend a professionally organised event, however If you are having your own celebration use common sense and follow some simple safety tips to help you and your loved ones avoid injuries or damage to your property. Please remember all fireworks should be purchased from reputable suppliers and marked with CE.
Bonfire Tips• Never use flammable liquids to help start a
bonfire • Never burn dangerous items such as aerosol
cans, paint tins, foam furniture or batteries.• Build your bonfire well clear of
buildings, garden sheds, fences, hedges and overhanging branches.
• Keep bonfires to a manageable size and evenly built so that they collapse inwards as they burn.
• Always check the bonfire’s construction is still sound prior to lighting it, that there are no children or animals inside
and that hazardous items such as aerosols and fireworks have not been thrown onto it.
• Bonfires should be lit after the firework display unless positioned sufficiently far away to ensure stray sparks from the bonfire cannot fall into the firework area.
• Don’t leave bonfires unattended. An adult should supervise it until it has burnt out. If it has to be left, damp it down with water.
• Keep a bucket of water or hosepipe nearby in case of emergency.
• Make sure that the fire is out and surroundings are made safe before leaving.
Fireworks Tips• Don’t drink alcohol if setting off fireworks.• Keep fireworks in a closed metal box and take
them out one at a time.• Always follow the instructions carefully when
using them. Read them in daylight or by torchlight, never by a naked flame.
• Light the firework at arm’s length with a taper and stand well back.
• Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks.
• Never go back to fireworks once they are lit. Even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode.
• Never throw fireworks and don’t put them in your pocket.
• Always supervise children around fireworks and never give sparklers to children under five. Even when sparklers have gone out they are still hot so put them in a bucket of water after use.• Respect your neighbours –
don’t let off fireworks late at night.
• Keep your pets indoors throughout the evening with the curtains closed.
As November the 5th draws closer, it’s time to prepare for chilly nights round the fire, staring into the sky waiting for colourful explosions and finding the perfect stick on which to roast a marshmallow.
