I have been under a lot of stress lately. The kind of stress that makes you want to eat your weight in mac and cheese. I am kind of a negative person to begin with and I have to try very hard to see the good in people and in situations. I am constantly being told that having a positive attitude and being grateful can have a positive impact on your health. And I wholly believe that is true. Even if it doesn’t help my stress level at that moment, it does remind me that most of what’s important to me, I already have.

I am all for having a positive attitude but here’s what I’m not down with: The idea that you have to be grateful for what you have; even when it

sucks, simply because it could be worse. I say this because I am an avid user of Facebook and people love to share their world on there. I don’t usually share the ins and outs of my days on my personal page and never do on our EDGE Facebook as I don’t want to invite the opinions of thousands of people to join in. But I came across this post after a “friend” was complaining about her worse than ever life.

“I ask you to have some perspective considering how blessed we are relative to those who aren’t able to usher the New Year in. I too had a challenging year and often-times wish it were over, however, I am grateful to even be able to send this message to you in light of the fact that there are those who don’t even have the capacity to do so, and those who didn’t make it to today!”

In other words, “Look on the bright side: You could be DEAD.”

WTF? Why is it that some (obviously well-meaning) people seem to think that if you complain even about things that legitimately stink, or wish that time would hurry up and heal your wounds, that you are not grateful for the good in your life, and that you have a bad attitude?

Is relentless positivity the only way to show that you recognize that there is much joy in the world? Why can’t you be grateful for life in general, but still express frus-tration or unhappiness with the sucky parts? Why is one person’s misery necessarily measured against all the possible misery in the world? Why is it not OK to feel two feelings at the same time?

Hence this rant. Now I feel I must fight the all-gratitude all-the-time types like the woman who commented on my “friend’s” Facebook page. To me, you can’t be truly grateful unless you also acknowledge the PURE SUCKI-TUDE of some aspects of life. Slogging through the negative feelings can lead to perspective, often time a positive perspective. You can’t see the world clearly if you don’t let yourself feel what you feel.

So my opinion (which of course, is very important) is if you are upset, sad, mad or frustrated. Then be upset, sad, mad or frustrated. It is okay to be something other than totally optimistic all the time. Stop being the annoying cheerleader and be Debbie downer for a day…but only for a day..then suck it up like all the rest of us and get back on the saddle….I know….it made me sick just writing the words…

The Garage Built Bike show was founded in 2010 by a close-knit group of friends who were not only motorcycle enthusiasts, but who loved nothing more than spending what little spare time they had working in the garage with their own hands - a group of blue collar, working class people turning wrenches and doing what gave them joy and purpose. Among full time jobs and handling kids and family, bikes were built and good times were shared. Months and even sometimes years were spent in mutual camaraderie, tooling in their garages throughout the seasons. Everybody knew somebody who had a different gift to bring to the table - be it welding, grinding, painting or what have you... they all came together to help each other out.Eventually, the Garage Bilt Bike Show was formed to showcase the “average Joe” and his (or her) work as an alternative to the regularly displayed, high dollar machinery directly off the showroom floor or what we see on TV that would be out of reach for most of us. Pulling together what everyone had been tooling away on in their garages all year long turned into a bigger feat than originally planned, and was soon put on display for all to see. With no real rhyme or reason - except for the love of octane, horse power and bragging rights - within a matter of weeks the snowball effect had taken place. Looking to the community where we all live and work, they decided to give back to an often over-looked charity. They chose the Down-town Women's Center. Last year's event showcased about 100 bikes and countless hundreds of spectators throughout the day. This year looks to be bigger and better; it takes place September 18th from noon to 7pm at Stay True Tattoo located at 804 SW 10th street. There will be live music, games, raffle prizes, free food and drinks. All makes and models of bikes are welcome, and all profits will again be donated to the Downtown Women's Center.

As action-packed as the 28th annual VMAs were, not all of the excitement happened on the stage. Here's a baker's dozen things you did not see on TV that occurred before, during and after the show. 1. Katy Perry, who won Video of the Year and the collaboration Moonman, donned yet another outfit for the backstage pressroom -- a sparkle-laden black and white outfit with a 45 rpm single motif. She was, by far, the most eloquent of the all the award winners who made their way backstage, complimenting fellow nominees such as Adele and her husband Russell Brand. "Fire-work," she said, was the right song to win video of the year. "We all know 'California Girls' is not going to change the world. 'Firework' is a movement. You can always sing about clubs and bitches and ho's, it takes a little more to sing 'Firework.' " Cur-rently concentrating on her tour, which she said has been a gruel-ing year, Perry noted that "I don't want to feel like I've peaked -- I have too many outfits to go through." That comment led to follow up about her fashion sense. "I am OK with self depreca-tion. I'm all right with being laughed at, being laughed with, and laughing."

2. The quietest moment in the backstage press area preceded the arrival of Britney Spears. She mouthed the word "wow" as she walked up the platform for the photographs and struck poses in three positions, indicated to her handler she was finished and then left the room. All in 20 seconds.

3. An annoyed Stephanie Germanotta continued to play the role of Jo Calderone when she stepped backstage to greet photogra-phers and the media after her performance and two wins. Refus-ing to acknowledge her Lady Gaga persona, she - or he -- contended that New Jersey was home, the family came from Palermo, Sicily and that Joe was "just a guy" and in no way a Guido. Joe explained his presence thusly: "She's just really fucking pissed at me. She said 'if you clearly love me, get in that spotlight.' So I did." Tough guy to the end, as she left the press area, she flipped off the photographers.

4. While Gaga has Jo, Nicki Minaj has Roman. The hip-hop video winner said her new album will have "a lot of Roman, a boy that lives inside of me. He's gay." She did not want to give out more details, only saying her fans will be pleased.

5. Eight members of Odd Future accompanied Tyler, the Creator -- who insisted on looking like he was about to cry while holding his Moonman -- in the press room. "This is awkward," he said, spewing f-bombs in every comment. Standing in one shoe and one sock, his limp onstage was the result of him falling offstage "into Kanye's arms." And while he acknowledged that Bruno Mars gave a good performance, he stuck to his guns in the assessment he gave during the pre-show. "I hate that dude's music." He was not that fond of the press corps either: as he left, he directed his final comment to the people documenting his night. Lowering the microphone to the floor, he proffered a final single thought of "assholes."

6. Comedian Kevin Hart, who opened the show and appeared in several vignettes, said he was initially only scheduled to present the new artist award and that all of the appear-ances came together at the last minute. "Technically, they bullied me into hosting without paying me," he joked backstage as the show was approaching its conclusion. "I'm good friends with the network ... and I'm just thankful for the opportunity."

7. Sexual tension being a common theme at the VMAs, we asked Nickelodeon star Victo-ria Justice if she were offered the opportunity to redux the Madonna/Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera "Like a Virgin" performance -- and kiss Madonna -- would she? She demurred that as an 18-year old -- and a Nickelodeon star -- it probably wouldn't be in the cards for her.8. Ne-Yo joked that his glittery orange shirt was made of recycled pennies and remarked that only a certain kind of man could pull it off. Trust us Ne-Yo, you looked smashing.

9. Nicki Minaj's eclectic outfit, meanwhile, was created by two Japanese designers. Her apocalypse-themed video for her song with Rihanna, "Fly," premiered during the VMA pre-show. Minaj said it compliments the song's "girl power" theme. "The song is very inspiring. I wanted to paint a picture of the end of the world, the end of something, and be amazing at the end -- being able to get back up and walk."

10. The last person to arrive on the red carpet was Cloris Leachman. The Oscar and Emmy winner shared moments with an intriguing collection of women during the night, hanging out with Beyonce on the black carpet before presenting an award to Lady Gaga and joking around onstage with the "Jersey Shore" gals.

11. Speaking of which: The "Jersey Shore" girls adjusted their decolletage for photogra-phers as a quartet but a bit of tension crossed three of their faces as Snooki stepped away and took a few solo shots. Using cleavage to attract the photographers, Jennie "JWoww" Farley secured attention by dragging her boyfriend Roger Matthews onto the platform to pose with her. Fortunately, none of them spoke.

12. At one point prior to the show there was an altercation on MTV's press podium that was ultimately -- we think -- quietly resolved after a swarm of MTV press folks, plus some police officers -- swooped in to break up the rising tension. Others in the crowd were less tense, judging by the herbal aroma that surrounded a certain posse of hip-hop acts.

13. The black carpet arrivals area was housed "inside" the JW Marriott Hotel this year, instead of outside in the baking Los Angeles sun. The press corps that poured into the backstage area just as the show was starting was unanimously thankful to MTV for keeping them out of the 90 degree heat.

Grammy-winning Blues musician David "Honeyboy" Edwards, believed to be the oldest surviving Delta bluesman and whose roots stretched back to blues legend Robert Johnson, died early Monday in his Chicago home, his manager said. He was 96. Edwards had a weak heart and his health seriously declined in May, when the guitarist had to cancel concerts scheduled through November, said his longtime manager, Michael Frank of Earwig Music Company.

Born in 1915 in Shaw, Miss., Edwards learned the guitar growing up and started playing professionally at age 17 in Memphis. He came to Chicago in the 1940s and played on Maxwell Street, small clubs and street corners. By the 1950s Edwards had played with almost every bluesman of note - including Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Charlie Patton and Muddy Waters. Among Edwards' hit songs were "Long Tall Woman Blues," ''Gamblin Man" and "Just Like Jesse James."

Edwards played his last shows in April at the Juke Joint Festival in Clarks-dale, Miss., Frank said.

"Blues ain't never going anywhere," Edwards told The Associated Press in 2008. "It can get slow, but it ain't going nowhere. You play a lowdown dirty shame slow and lonesome, my mama dead, my papa across the sea I ain't dead but I'm just supposed to be blues. You can take that same blues, make it uptempo, a shuffle blues, that's what rock 'n' roll did with it. So blues ain't going nowhere. Ain't goin' nowhere."

Edwards won a 2008 Grammy for traditional blues album and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award

in 2010. His death represents the loss of the last direct link to the first generation of Mississippi blues musicians, Frank said. "That piece of the history from that genera-tion, people have to read about it from now on," Frank said. "They won't be able to experience the way the early guys played it, except from

somebody who's learned it off of a record."

Edwards was known for being an oral historian of the music genre and would tell biographical stories between songs at his shows, Frank said. He was recorded for the Library of Congress in Clarksdale, Miss., in 1942. "He had photographic memory of every fine detail of his entire life," Frank said. "All the way up until he died. He had so much history that so many other musicians didn't have and he was able to tell it."

Edwards gathered those stories in the 1997 book "The World Don't Owe Me Nothing: The Life and Times of Delta Bluesman Honeyboy Edwards." He wrote in the book that his father bought a guitar for $8 from a share-cropper and Edwards learned to play in 1929. "I watched my daddy play that guitar, and whenever I could I would pick it up and strum on it," Edwards wrote.

Edwards was known for his far-ranging travels and played interna-tionally. In his 90s, he was still playing about 70 shows a year. Edwards would visit with the audience after every show, taking pictures, signing auto-graphs and talking with fans, Frank said.

Edwards earned his nickname "Honey-boy" from his sister, who told his mother to "look at honey boy" when Edwards stumbled as he learned to walk as a toddler. He is survived by his daughter Betty Washington and stepdaughter Dolly McGinister.

"He had his own unique style," Frank said. "But it was a 75-year-old style and it was a synthesis of the people before him and in his time."

Edwards, Delta Blues Great, Dies

Janet Jackson said Monday she won't attend a planned tribute concert for her older brother Michael in Wales because the show coincides with the trial of a doctor charged in the King of Pop's death.

The singer's one-sentence statement to The Associated Press does not criticize the show, as her brothers Jermaine and Randy have done, but cites the court case as her reason for not attending.

"Because of the trial, the timing of this tribute to our brother would be too difficult for me," her statement reads. Her statement was released on what would have been her brother's 53rd birthday.

The show is scheduled for Oct. 8 in Cardiff, Wales, and the singer's mother, Katherine, and some of her children are scheduled to attend.

Organizers of "Michael Forever - The Tribute Concert" have struggled to line up top-name acts and have been criticized by fans and the late singer's estate for multiple reasons, including its costly tickets, timing and remote location.

Fan groups from around the world have called on organizers to cancel the show.

Juliette Harris, a spokeswoman for

promoter Global Event Live, had no immediate comment on Janet Jack-son's statement Monday.

Christina Aguilera, Smokey Robin-son, and Cee Lo Green are the top-names listed as performers so far. Organizers had to rescind an offer to the band Kiss after fans and Michael Jackson's estate noted that singer-bassist Gene Simmons had harshly criticized the pop singer over the years.

Opening statements in the involuntary manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray are scheduled to begin on Sept. 27. Murray, who has pleaded not guilty, could face up to four years in prison if convicted.

Authorities allege he gave Michael Jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol and other sedatives in the bedroom of his rented mansion on June 25, 2009.

Jermaine and Randy Jackson issued a statement on the day the concert was announced, saying Murray's trial took precedence over other events.

"There will come a time and place for an amazing and deserving tribute to Michael," the brothers' statement read. "But we feel that the most important tribute we can give to our brother at this time is to seek justice in his name."
