    Nothing From Nothing Leaves Nothing

A new study from the US Center for Economic Development indicates that single black women, even in their peak earning years, have a median net worth of only $5. Net worth ismeasured by taking a persons assets bank accounts, investments, real estate less mort-gages, outstanding loan, credit card balances and other debts. The figures in the study arebased on 2007 data and, after the economic downturn, would no doubt be worse now.

The category single women includes those who are living singly, single parents, divorcedand widowed. Their median assets are revealing. To illustrate the distinction between aver-age and median, suppose 5 people have assets respectively of $3, $4, $5, $7 and $11. The

average asset value is $6; the median is $5. It takes a whole lot of empty-handed black women to set the median at $5. Many may have had some asset value but their debt was fargreater. Undoubtedly, much of that debt was comprised of credit cards and sub-prime mort-gages. This type of mortgage accounted for over 45% of all US mortgages outstanding at thetime the market imploded in 2009. The wave of subsequent bankruptcies wiped out a lot of this debt but it also eliminated the assets. The women in the study now have even less toshow for themselves.

The 2008 black population in the US was 41.1 million of which 52% were women. Not allwere single by definition but many were. If these women have virtually no assets and littleto no credit then I imagine that Hispanic women in the US are no better off. These womenrepresent the poorest of the poor in the wealthiest nation in history. They are also the peoplein the US who are the least likely to have access to medical insurance.

I not only ask myself how this is morally tolerable in so wealthy a nation but also how thistype of circumstance cannot lead to anything but a disastrous economic outcome in the en-suing decades as the population ages. Canada is far ahead in its approach to social responsi-bility but we will still feel the seismic effect of the sinking of the US Titanic economy if they do not approve a national health care package soon. The long term costs of povertycome back to us as crime and diseases like TB. They are always substantially more expen-sive than any country can afford to ignore. JK

    Moonlight Road by Robyn Carr

Erin hits the pause button on her life, hol-ing up in a secluded (but totally upgraded, shes not into roughing it) cabin near Vir-gin River. She is looking forward to reallygetting to know herself...not some shaggy-haired mountain man she meets wanderingthe woods.

In fact, beneath his faded fatigues andbushy beard, Aiden Riordan is a doctor, recharging for a summer after leaving theNavy. Hes intrigued by the pretty, slightlysnooty refugee from the rat race medi-tating, journaling and definitely keepinghim at arms length. Hed love to getcloser...if his scruffy exterior and crazy ex-wife dont hold him back.

But maybe its something in the water unlikely romances seem to take root inVirgin River...helped along with somewell-intentioned meddling, of course.

    Near Miss Day

Near Miss Day commemorates the day ahuge asteroid nearly missed hitting Earth.

On March 23, 1989, an asteroid the sizeof a mountain, came within 500,000miles of a collision with the Earth. Ininterstellar terms, it was a near miss. Hadit collided with the Earth, it would haveleft a devastating crater the size of Wash-ington, D.C. It's affect on the planetwould have been catastrophic. Since then, there have been other near misses.

Near misses with large, potentially lifethreatening galactic objects happen on an

infrequent basis. It is believed a largeasteroid collided with Earth and causedthe extinction of the dinosaurs. Scientistsbelieve it is only a matter of time beforeanother catastrophic collision with Earthoccurs. But, don't worry. The odds are itwill not happen for a long, long time.

    Other Asteroid Near Misses:

    2003 SQ222 - Approximately 10 metersin diameter, came within 54,700 miles of earth on September 27, 2003.

    Asteroid 2002 EM7 - Approximately, 70

meters long, this rock came within288,000 miles in March, 2002.

WWD 2010: Clean Water for aHealthy World

Every year, 1,500 cubic kilometres of wastewater are produced globally. Whilewaste and wastewater can be reused pro-ductively for energy and irrigation, itusually is not. In developing countries 80percent of all waste is being dischargeduntreated, because of lack of regulationsand resources. And population and indus-trial growth add new sources of pollutionand increased demand for clean water tothe equation. Human and environmentalhealth, drinking and agricultural watersupplies for the present and future are atstake, still water pollution rarely warrantsmention as a pressing issue.

To do something about that UN-Waterhas chosen Clean Water for a HealthyWorld as theme for World Water Day2010. The overall goal of the World Wa-ter Day on 22 March 2010 campaign is toraise the profile of water quality at thepolitical level so that water quality con-siderations are made alongside those of water quantity.

    Viewing Saturn in 2010

January through July are the best months toview Saturn this year. Look in the east be-fore midnight in January. By March, Saturnrises at sunset for an earlier and more con-venient viewing window. Saturn's north poleis tipped toward us now. And this year Sat-urn's rings are slightly inclined -- tilted 4degrees in January, dipping to a nearly edge-in view in June, then tipped up to 10 degrees

by year-end. Saturn's conjunction with theSun is in late September, when Saturn willappear very close to the Sun at dusk. Then inlate October Saturn is visible in the morning

just before dawn. It will rise a little earliereach morning through the fall months. ByDecember Saturn will offer a nice after-midnight observers nightcap.

Opposition: Saturn reaches opposition on March 21 whenit is visible all night long. An object is atopposition when the sun is on one side of Earth and the object is directly on the oppo-

site side. The result is that the object is fullyilluminated by the sun and appears disk-like.We see a great example of an oppositionevery month. Whenever there is a full moon, the moon is on one side of Earth and the sunis on the opposite side.

Saturn Viewing Tips This year begins with Saturn's rings tilted 4.9degrees. Saturn's north pole is now tiltedtowards Earth. Between January and June, the ring tilt narrows to only 1 degree becauseof the orbital position of Earth. Then fromJune until December the tilt increases to 10

degreesWhat will Saturn look like through a tele-scope? It depends. You may be able to seethe planet and the narrowing rings clearly, depending on such variables as the powerand cleanliness of your optics and eyepieces.Weather and atmospheric conditions affectthe view through your telescope, too. It isbest to view Saturn when it is highest in thesky so there will be less atmospheric dustand turbulence between you and your target.
