The Virgin Mary, Star Trek, and a Donkey's Book

I wouldn't know a Van Gogh from a misguided painted hole in the wall. Newlyframed. Art simply is not on my individual radar. Yet, in an odd twist of turns, my atten-tion to the news was directed to a recent discovery in a museum basement. This summer a17th century painting by the famed Diego Velazquez made the news because it was rediscov-ered in storage at the Yale University of Art Gallery [don't worry. I had to look up Ve-lazquez in my art history book]. Even though I enjoy the good treasure hunt, it was the title

of the work that actually tweaked my interest: The Education of the Virgin. Though cura-tors and art historians argued style, pigmentation, and authenticity, its the subtle that isworth a note: the badly damaged painting [is] of the Virgin Mary and her mother....Looking at the image, the typical dark baroque style of the young Mary and her mother, together fingering lines in a book. But here is the nub. There were no 'books' back then.Still, I printed off a copy of the painting which now hangs in my home office.

My bookish rants should be directed elsewhere. I remember the one cause in sup-port for the computer was for a paperless society. That through the transmission of digitaldata we could save a few trees. Wrong. If our culture is interested in saving the westernhemisphere forests, this could easily be managed by eliminating the box full of fliers fromSears and others in my postal box.

What computers, more specifically, the Internet, does for all is the access to infor-mation and admittedly biased, for accessing difficult to find books. There are several web-

sites that contain the re-typed text, all done by volunteers, of books that are no longer inprint; and they are free. Though the Internet has taken on excessive entertainment valueinstead of the support for enlightenment and the transmission of ideas, downloading booksillustrates how this worldly resource can be positively used.

But reading books (or anything of moderate length) on a computer screen? Or onthose new fangled electronic coasters called e-readers where newspapers and books can beread? Maybe this generation who were soothed and coddled on computer screens; to me,this is not reading. To me, this is a digital distraction that is sacrilege to the book as a read-ing vessel, as a cultural vessel for gaining personal enlightenment that has existed for centu-ries. Am I trying to make hay out of a pile manure? What does the futuristic medium likeStar Trek say?

Stardate 2947.3. Captain James T. Kirk is erroneously court martialed. [Why I

remember this would be akin to resolving all the unknowns in brain function. HOW is an-other matter. Thanks to a quick call to Wes Long, and a easy search by Jeff Robertson, allwas regained.] The scene is in Kirks quarters; waiting is Samuel T. Cogley, attorney at law, there to offer his services. Kirk notices all the books stacked haphazardly around the roomand says What's all this? pg. 4

    pg. 1 The Virgin Mary

I figured we'll be spending some time together, so I moved in. Cogley, picking up onKirks apparent unfamiliarity with so many alien objects asks What's the matter? Don't likebooks?. Kirk: I like them fine, but a computer takes less space (that same old argument).Pointing to his piles of books This is where the law is. Not in that homogenized, pasteur-ized, synthesizer. Do you want to know the law, the ancient concepts in their own language.

Learn the intent of the men [gender bias here] who wrote them, from Moses to the tribunal ofAlpha 3? Books. So Kirk may not have been a friend of the book, but the producers of theshow saw what the argument would be decades later.

And despite the philanthropic attempts to put a computer in the hands of every poorchild, here comes Luis Soriano, riding his stubborn donkey through the paths and dirt roadsof Columbia, packed full of books. A virtual biblioburro. As a primary school teacher, hisfree time is spent trying to reach children in the nearly abandoned regions providing a read-ing education. In some places children must walk up to 40 minutes to reach a school, in acountry where teachers are few in the country side. Soriano has been doing this for 17 years.Every Wednesday and Saturday he leaves his family with Alfa and Beto, his donkeys packedwith books. More than 4000 children have been reached with his teaching and reading. Ser-vices which are now enhanced by a free library built next to his home, the largest of its kindin the area with 4200 books (by traditional library standards, a mere pittance). Take thatcomputers, in a final swipe against modernism. Take that Bill Gates and all those dot com-mers. The book still and always will rule, even if it is on the back of an ass.TTT

The Washington Post Mensa Invitational invited readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtractingor changing one letter, and supply a new definition. Here are a few of the winners:

Cashtration: The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period of time.

Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize that it was your money to start with.

Decafalon: The gruelling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you.

Dopeler Effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.

    Broncitis: pathological fear of horses.

Karmaggedon: its like when everybody is sending off these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and itslike a serious bummer.
