First and only edition. René Budel (1540-1597) was a civil servant working for the mint of Ernst von

Bayern, Archbishop of Cologne. When he wrote his work he had already some 20 years of experience with

precious metals and coinage. His work explains the origins and history of money, the existence and the limits

of the right of the nobility to change the metallic content of coins and its consequences on public wealth. It

also contains a collection of many noteworthy publications on the subject with tracts of Molineus,

Covarrubias and Bodin among others. Kress 182, Goldsmiths 254, Einaudi 737, Smith Rara 396

One of the earliest contributors to mathematical economics

5. CANARD, Nicolas François: Principes d‘économie politique, ouvrage couronné par l’Institut

national, dans sa séance du 15 Nivôse an IX (5 Janvier 1801) ; et depuis revu, corrigé et augmenté

par l’Auteur. À Paris, chez F. Buisson, An X (1801). One volume in 8vo ; pp. (IV), 236, (8)

both failed to be honored) denied the uniqueness of Canard’s work. Nevertheless it had quite an influence,

especially outside France. The work went through three editions in German, and it was also published in

Spanish and Italian. Kress B 4350, Goldsmiths 18122, Einaudi 830, Menger c. 559, Stammhammer

First edition of Davenant’s most substantial work. Charles Davenant (1656-1714) was economist and

administrator. He was Commissioner of Excise, Member of Parliament, and a prolific pamphleteer who had a

clear grasp of the relationship between money, international trade and public finance. In his Discourses on

the Publick Revenues he pleads for the importance of political arithmetic or the art of reasoning by figures,

upon things relating to government. Most of his political arithmetic application relates to taxation and

estimating the gains from trade in terms of bullion. Adam Smith cited Davenant’s Discourses a number of

times. (New Palgrave I/748), Hollander 404, Kress 2074, Goldsmiths 3523, Einaudi 1435

First combined issue of Zacchia’s two main works., first published 1658. “Latin treatise on wages which

deserves mention for the rarity of the consideration of that subject in days when he wrote. He distinguishes

different forms of wages…He limits himself to the statement that an adequate wage is fixed by a monarch or

by law, by customs or contract …and the person fixing them should take account of the ability of the

workman, the quality of his work, and the price of food”. (Palgrave III, 689)
