I. OBJECTIVES

1. To learn the function and basic operation of the instruments comprising a test bench.

2. To gain a basic understanding of how to use the power supply, DMM, oscilloscope and function generator.

3. To take measurements using the power supply, DMM, oscilloscope and function generator.

4. To determine waveform characteristics of various signals.

A. Introduction to Instruments and Measurements

Note: Insert your answer and, if necessary, let the page adjust to fit. Make sure you include the correct units in engineering notation. Remember, use ohm for the resistance unit and u for micro prefix.

1. Measure DC voltage with the DMM

a. Attach the power supply +5V outputs to the DMM inputs (power supply + output to DMM VΩ input; power supply – output to DMM COM input).

b. Set the DMM to DC Voltage and adjust the power supply to output +5.0V.

c. Record the reading below, including units.

2. Measure DC voltage with the oscilloscope

a. Set Channel 1 of Oscilloscope to 2VDC/division.

b. Set Time-base of Oscilloscope to 50μsec/division.

c. Set Oscilloscope Triggering to Positive Edge for Channel 1.

d. Set Coupling of Oscilloscope to DC.

e. Connect oscilloscope probe from oscilloscope to the DC Power Supply (main probe to red & ground to black).

f. Read the voltage on the oscilloscope. Record your reading with the appropriate unit in engineering notation.

V = _____________

3. Measure resistance with the DMM

a. Remove a 1kohm resistor (color bands are brown, black, red, gold) from the parts kit. The gold band indicates that the measured value should be within ±5% of the specified value.

b. Switch the DMM to ohms (ohm) and measure the resistor value.

c. Record the measured value and the calculated range (1kohm ±5%) including units.

4. Measure a changing signal voltage with the oscilloscope

a. Connect the frequency generator output to the oscilloscope 1X input.

b. Select the square wave output.

c. Set the Frequency knob to a value of 1 kHz.

d. Set the Amplitude to 5.00 Vpp and the Offset to 2.5 V.

e. On the oscilloscope, adjust the Time/Div setting to a value of 0.5 ms (observe setting at the top of the screen).

f. Set the Volts/Div to 2.0V.

g. Sketch the observed waveform below. Label both axes and ground.

5. Generating and measuring triangle waveforms.

a. Set the frequency generator to output a triangle wave ( ) with a frequency of 1.0 kHz.

b. Set the oscilloscope to 2.0V/div and 200 μsec/div and sketch the output below. Label the axes and ground.

B. Component Identification

1. Go through your parts kit and identify the various components and tools you have. Application and proper use will be demonstrated in video clips and discussed in the Lab Q&A thread.

2. After verifying that your lab kit is complete, select two components and find out what they are and what they do. HINT – use the instruction manual, illustrated parts list, the campus library and/or the Internet to guide you toward the answers. Record the part numbers and functions below.

1st device’s part number or physical description - _________________
