PIANO COURSE IN 24 VOLUMES
Vol. 1 At the circus £9.40
A first book for children who want to make music at the piano.
At the Circus is divided into reading tunes and tunes which are learned by rote so from the start,
pupils are encouraged to learn both by reading and by listening and copying. Of course, if tunes are
not learned from the notes on the page, children are playing them from memory. This is a skill which
is specifically encouraged through volumes 2, 4, 6 and 8 of our Piano Course Vols 1–24.

Using At the circus with Nicola
In a lesson with Nicola (age 3), we ‘explore’ the piece Clowns’ car in At the circus. With the book
open at the page (which has a splendid drawing of the clowns and their car complete with horn), I
play the piece through.
Esther Cohen: ‘What does that sound like?’
Nicola: ‘That’s a beep-beep.’
EC: Can you find what makes that sound in the picture?
(Nicola points to the horn.)
EC: ‘I’m going to be the wheel’s rolling and you’re going to be the beep-beep.’ (We play the piece.)
Nicola: ‘Now I’ll be the wheels rolling and you’ll be the horn.’ (She plays her version of what she saw
and heard me do.)
Nicola can’t play many of the pieces in At the circus right through, exactly as they are set out in the
book. But she can sing them, she has grasped the musical ideas behind them and she and I together
have adapted them to her level of physical and mental maturity.
She can follow my instructions, she can play in time to a beat, she has a clear understanding of the
layout of the keyboard and she is equally at home playing on any section of it and on black or white
keys. She knows how her hand and fingers should look and because she does not need to read any
music, she is able to watch her hands and adjust her hand position as she plays.
She is the youngest pupil with whom I have used At the circus and, through working with her, I have
discovered the full potential of the book. Its child-centred approach allows the teacher to go from
what the child can do – or is prepared to do! It reaches the child where she is. It draws out what she
can already do and allows her to explore and find new things which she can do rather than thrusting
her into a completely new, mysterious unknown.
Young children are most comfortable with the familiar, so it makes sense to approach learning to
play the piano from what they have already experienced of making music. They can all sing and beat
time, even if neither skill is very developed yet. Playing in time is just an extension of beating time.
Making sounds on piano keys is only too easy. Only the reading of music limits the use of the whole
keyboard so why not start by playing rhythmic sounds using the whole keyboard. Black keys form
the signposts for knowing where you are on the keyboard, so let’s use them first. A marching rhythm
is easiest; left! right! left! right! and so, Circus Parade, the first tune in the book is born.
Vol. 2 Play in the park £7.90
A little book of little pieces for little children – typically four to six-year olds. Each piece is illustrated
and has words to sing. Of the fourteen pieces, around half are for hands together; all finger numbers
are marked, so children can learn the tunes easily. Because the pieces are short and use simple
patterns, they are easy to memorise.

Vol. 3 Beside the pool £9.40
Describing the world in a garden as seen through the eyes
of the garden gnome who sits beside the garden pond, this
book takes a slightly more formal approach to learning to
read music with lots of simple (but interesting!) pieces.
The reading pieces are for five fingers in each hand,
centred around middle C. Most of the tunes are about
what the garden gnome sees around him, but there are a
few traditional tunes familiar to most children.
Beside the Pool also includes some tunes which use the
range of the keyboard: these are taught by demonstration
and played from memory. They help children to develop
independence of each hand, explore a range of sounds,
but most of all, they are fun!
As in At the Circus, the music for these pieces has been
written for the information of teachers and parents – it is
not intended that the pupil should read these pieces! The
patterns to be played are easily absorbed, and each piece
has detailed hints, and a keyboard diagram to show the starting position.

Vol. 4 On the move £6.40
Six easy pieces describing different kinds of movement: bouncing,
sailing, dancing…
They are made up of easily memorised patterns, range over much of
the keyboard and sound more complex than they are!

Rowing
Sailing

Vol. 5 Alligators £8.40
Alligators and Black Cat (Volumes 5 and 7 of the Piano Course Vols
1–24) continue the work started in Beside the Pool. The concept of
reading up the treble lines and spaces from Middle C and down the
bass lines and spaces from Middle C is thoroughly explored and
reinforced through catchy mnemonics, practice of playing and
saying notes on the keys, and through written exercises.
Both books give lots of opportunity to become familiar with each
new teaching point containing over 30 varied tunes. Many are
settings of humorous poems written by children’s’ poets and the
music captures something of the content of the words. The pages
are illustrated with Robbie Mendelow’s funny – at times zany –
illustrations which never fail to intrigue children.

Vol. 6 Catch phrases £6.90
Things to say become things to play: Eleven easy, catchy pieces for
young piano players. Most pieces use simple patterns and can be
taught (by rote) to young children with little reading ability but also
provide excellent reading for older learners who will find these
pieces more musically interesting than most beginners’ music. Pre-
grade 1–grade 1.

Vol. 11 Monkey mischief £7.90
Monkey Mischief contains the single most popular piece of the course – Skatebored! Long after kids
finish this volume and go on to greater things, they still go back to Skatebored with its irresistible
jazzy patterns over a walking bass. But Monkey Mischief includes some challenging classical work as
well – Musette (Leopold Mozart) with the left hand moving in broken octaves and Gavotte en
Rondeau (Dandrieu) with with a busy right hand of quavers and semiquavers over a LH repeated
pattern. There are two duets (Rain and Wind) with both parts of equal interest and standard and one

named Liquorice twist!) and another duet about weather (Sun, this time) there is a plaintive Air by
Purcell and Anglaise by Leopold Mozart. Of course there are some light fun pieces too with the

Everyone enjoys the Diabelli duet (Lively Dance) with an easy part for the player 1 and a good level
of challenge for the player 2. The popular Hebrew tune, Hava Nagila , appears with a left hand part
all in fifths which keeps the tune dancing along. Short Story (Lichner) is a delightful classical piece
which gives great satisfaction to audience and performer. Of the contemporary pieces, Bright Eyes is
a popular, perky number while Morning creates a dreamy atmosphere.

Vol. 21 Milestone £7.40
As the title of the book suggests, pupils who reach
volume 21 have reached a milestone where they
should be able to tackle music of a Grade 6 level and
beyond. The Prelude in B minor is the first Chopin
piece to appear in the Piano Course Vols 1–24 and the
well-known Cuckoo (Daquin) is here also. The lesser
known piece by Kirchner (from his New Scenes of
Childhood) makes an impressive performance piece,
while Still and Silent has eerie, other-worldly feel to it.

10 well-known carols in less easy arrangements for piano
Every child enjoys playing familiar songs and it is the tunes which they care about most. Christmas

of underlying harmony and some use of pianistic devices. The
over-riding factor, however, remains to present these carols in
such a way that the flow of the melody is not impeded by
frequent changes of hand position. It is to be hoped that children
being able to play these arrangements fluently and up to speed
will compensate for any lack of completeness in the harmony.
