Jesus said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber; but he who enters by the door is t h e s h e p h e r d o f t h e s h e e p . T o h i m t h e

gatekeeper opens; the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers." This figure Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So Jesus again said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers; but the sheep did not heed them. I am the door; if any one enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: !One of the beautiful and enduring images of Jesus is that of the Good shepherd. This image has been captured by the human imagination and is replicated in fine art and in music. !The image of the Good shepherd is captured in stained art in our church in the northern window in the sanctuary. !It is an image that is often located in many of the homes in Barbados and brings tremendous courage at those times when we feel to make a connection with the sacred. !Jesus is our Shepherd it is his voice to which we adhere day by day in our lives and the one whom we worship in the Holy Eucharist and other sacred services of the church. !In today’s gospel reading we reflect on the notion of Jesus being the path and passage to our Father in Heaven. !

I am the door; if any one enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. John 1: 9 !

In the Old Testament the Shepherd image speaks to the role of the King in Israel. In a deep spiritual and theological sense to say that Jesus is our shepherd is to acknowledge him as king and center of our lives. !We listen to his voice and we carry out his commands as we live out the christian life in our various communities.

!Good shepherd Sunday comes within the context of the Easter observance. It is at this time that we consider the sacraments given by Christ and renewed in our hearts. !It is here that the sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist lead us to the understanding that each one of us have entered into the life of the resurrected Christ. !The one who invites us to share in the brokenness of bread and cup is the one invites us to be shepherd to relatives, friends and workmates and to continue the wonderful work started by our Saviour. !May the grace and favor of Jesus the Good shepherd rest upon us and may we in turn seek to be the ministers and stewards of the mysteries of God. Today is being commemorated as Mothers’ Day. We ask God’s blessing on all mothers, parents, guardians and all those who have the care of children. !

TYRELL MCCOLLIN We pray for Tyrell McCollin. Tyrell (aged 16) one of our young members was involved in a serious accident on Thursday evening in Sargeant’s Village. We also pray for his parents Gloria and Desmond. !

PANEL DISCUSSION The family Life commission will be sponsoring a Panel Discussion on domestic violence and the family. This discussion will take place on Wednesday May 14, 2014 at 7:30pm in the Christ Church Parish Church Ivan Harewood Centre from 7:30 p.m. !

HEALTH GUILD MOVIE NIGHT You are invited to a movie night on Friday, 16th May at 7:00 p.m. on the Church grounds. Contribution $5:00. Refreshments will be on sale. !

MOTHERS’ UNION CONCERT Please support this venture on Sunday, 25th May at 4:00 p.m. Contribution: $5:00. !

CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT The St David Church will be holding a Fund Raiser Golf Tournament on Saturday May 31st, at the Barbados Golf Club (BGC). Tee off times will be available between 7.00am and 1.00pm. Entry fees: members of BGC $50.00, non-members $125.00. Format of the competition is a Two-Ball Scramble (2 members per team). Bring your own partner. Take this opportunity to assist us in raising funds for the Church while having fun in the world's fastest growing sport. Lots of wonderful prizes to be won. ! !!

On Whit-Monday, June 9, the Mothers’ Union will host a picnic at Bath, St. John. Contribution: $20:00 Adults; $10:00 Children under 12 years. Buses leave St. Basil at 9:00 and St. David at 9:30 a.m. !

BLACKMAN & GOLLOP SCHOOL MINISTRY The breakfast ministry to the children of the Blackman and Gollop School continues. A few items required, please note:- 700 napkins - per week; 25 Ibs of brown sugar - per week; large Pine Hill evap milk - per week; 90 eggs - per week; 1 large cooking oil - per week; 25 Ibs of flour - per week; 2 large tins of hot chocolate - 2.27kgs (every 2 weeks); Black and white pepper; 1 bottle of hot sauce; 1 bottle of lime juice; 3 large packages of pancake mix - per month; 1 large pancake syrup - per month; 1 large mayonnaise - per month. HEALTH CORNER!DRINK WATER, DRINK WATER We are always hearing the cry, 'drink water, drink water!' Have you thought of or researched the reasons why we should drink enough fluids every day? Let's look at a few important reasons: !

• Balance of Body Fluids

The human body is composed of approximately 60% water. Bodily fluids are lost throughout the day from breathing, urine, stool and skin evaporation. Water loss from the body is said to be either "sensible" or "insensible". Sensible loss is measureable and you know that you have lost it e.g. urine. Insensible loss cannot be measured directly and you don't know that you have lost it e.g. respiratory loss. The minimal amount of fluid loss from the body that can occur is referred to as the obligatory water loss. These fluids must be replaced to maintain good health.

• Hydrate Muscle Cells

The imbalance of fluids and electrolytes in the body can result in the onset of muscle fatigue. Think of a grape placed in the sun! Essentially the cells tend to shrivel and this adversely affects their functions. Not only muscle cells need water though, it is essential for every cell in your body. American College of Sports Medicine recommends that persons drink about 17 ounces (approx. 2 cups) of fluid about 2 hours before exercise. Fluids should be taken early and regularly during exercise to prevent dehydration.

• Normal Bowel Movement

Your colon tries to compensate for inadequate hydration by pulling water from stools. This action results in constipation . Drink plenty fluids and keep your colon happy! !

• Calorie Control

Are you trying to lose or maintain your weight? There are no calories in water, so substitute that soda with water or high- water -content foods such as fruits. Drinking water isn't the only way to stay hydrated, add these high water content foods to your diet. These foods are refreshing, filled with nutrients, and naturally low in calories. !
