Easter 2014

The release which has generous family sized lots from 800sqm was scheduled for completion in September 2017 but is now available for purchase.

This government’s willingness to stimulate housing supply through fast-tracking land release means developers have the confidence to release more lots to the market.

House prices in the Darwin and Palmerston region have already begun to stabilise with the median house price growing just 6% in 2013. That’s compared to an average 11% increase each year previously.

Palmerston is one of Australia’s fastest growing regions and the Government will continue to deliver what

Palmerston growing ahead of schedule

is needed to foster that growth. Significant land release will continue with 750 lots in stages III & IV of Zuccoli recently announced.

Urbex General Manager Wayne Rex said it’s very exciting to see our first residential community in the Territory come to fruition, describing the response from Territorians who want to call Johnston Ridge their

home as “overwhelming”.

Working with the government and civil construction partners to progress Johnston Ridge as quickly as possible in order to get Territorians into their homes sooner, Urbex has sold 243 lots to date more than 40 remaining in the development, which Mr Rex hopes some lucky Territorians will soon call home.

The Government is bringing international cricket to Palmerston for the first time later this year. With an

investment of more than $150,000 Northline Oval will be transformed into a first-class cricket ground.

Territory families know Family Day Care and childcare can be costly. The Government is increasing the childcare subsidy and making Family Day Care eligible for the first time.

Families with children under two will now be around $1500 a year better off with a 10% increase in the government’s new subsidies.

The Government understands the financial impost of child care on family budgets and the government is easing that burden.

Expanding the scheme to include Family Day Care will mean about an additional 1000 children will be eligible for subsidies.

This is great news for mums and dads and is among a package of measures in this year’s Territory budget aimed at providing immediate cost of living relief to Territory families.

The Northern Territory is one of only a few Australian jurisdictions which subsidises child care.

The Government is committed to relieving the

As a proud father of four, I understand childcare can be costly for Territory families which is why the Government is increasing subsidies for Territory families.

Increase to Child and Family Care Subsidies

cost of living pressures on Territory families and this financial year the increase will mean a total of $5.7 million investment for child care subsidies.

The increased subsidy will take effect from 1 July 2014 and will be paid directly to service providers as per current practice.

The Government continues to roll out initiatives aimed at reducing costs pressures for Territory families.

As Education Minister, last year the Back to School Payment Scheme more than doubled from $75 to $150 to help parents in that difficult period in the lead up to the start of school.

Palmerston Special Needs School Announced

Looking after Palmerston Seniors

I recently had the pleasure of announcing something I’ve been pushing for since becoming a Member of Parliament.

Palmerston will finally have a dedicated Special Needs School. $20m has been allocated in this year’s budget with planning and design to begin in July this year and construction to commence next year.

Planning Palmerston aged care

I am pleased to reveal the Northern Territory Government is planning for the needs of older Territorians.

Two potential sites in Palmerston have been identified for an aged care facility and a multi-million dollar road upgrade.

Over the years residents have discussed with me aged care an absolute necessity in Palmerston, as we continue to be the fastest growing region in the Territory.

It is so important to have appropriate land set aside for aged care well in advance, and I am pleased to reveal as Minister for Lands, Planning and the Environment,

together with the Department we are undertaking planning for this site.

The Department of Lands, Planning and the Environment has commenced planning works including engineering and feasibility assessments to inform future development

at Farrar in and around the Health Precinct and Aged Care facility.

Further development of the surrounding area including residential development and the new Palmerston Regional Hospital will bring extra pressure on the existing road network.

The Top End will host the Quadrangular One Day series from 20 July to 2 August.

The tournament will feature India A, South Africa A, Australia A and the Australian Under 23 performance squad, with three of the 14 Top End games scheduled for Northline Oval in Palmerston.

International Cricket for Palmerston cont. This is a great outcome for the Palmerston community with families able to watch top-quality cricket games right here in their own backyard and see Aussie stars like Phil Hughes in action.

We have excellent cricket facilities at Marrara and the Gardens but have never hosted international cricket in Palmerston before.

Some of the big names coming up for the series include Phillip Hughes, Mitchell Starc, all-rounder James Faulkner, one of the best finishers in One Day International cricket, Australian Twenty20 top order batsman Cameron White and the Territory’s own Kane Richardson.

A typical Territory family with two children will be $400 a year better off thanks to a $5 million expansion of the successful Sport Voucher scheme.

The $75 Sport Vouchers have proved hugely popular with Territory families and are being more than doubled to a total of $200 a year per child.

The Sport Voucher increase is among a package of measures in this year’s Territory Budget aimed at providing financial relief to Territory families.

$5 Million boost for Sport Voucher Scheme

Helping families cover the cost of their children getting involved in sport and recreation activities is a part of the Government’s plan to drive down the cost of living.

It’s also great news for our hard working sport and recreation clubs which benefit from the guaranteed cash injection and increased participation numbers that flow from the vouchers.

The new Sport Vouchers will mean every enrolled, school-aged child across the Territory is eligible to claim $200 a year on sport and recreation activities with

$100 vouchers issued to parents twice a year in July and January.

The Government is also expanding the Scheme to cover a wider range of sport and recreation activities including girl guides and scouts, dance, music lessons and other arts and cultural pursuits so children who don’t play traditional sports don’t miss out.

Healthy minds are just as important as healthy bodies and our new scheme will get more Territory kids off the couch, off the streets and into organised activities.

It’s now cheaper to get your children into sport
