Organising your wedding
Weddings are very special occasions in the life of any family and in the life of
the church. When considering getting married please check possible dates
with the Rector before confirming arrangements. It is expected that couples
will make a regular commitment to the life of the church in preparation for marriage.

Pack your bag to … Holland
When you think of Holland, what do you think of?
Windmills? Tulips? Clogs? While they are all there to see,
there is so much more to enjoy in the Netherlands,
which we have discovered on our many trips with the
children to visit my sister and her family. Amsterdam is a
great city and fun to navigate on the very efficient tram
service or by cycling. The Science museum called
“NEMO” is amazing with so much interactive activities for
all ages, and with the restaurant being on the roof the
views over the city are great. For older children, Anne
Frank’s house (prepare to queue!) and the recently refurbished Rijksmuseum are a
must. The huge park in the centre of the city called the Vondelpark has plenty of
playgrounds and is a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by! The boat cruises
let you see the city from another angle as you wander through the many canals.
Very easy to hop on and off. Away from the capital our favourite is the Madurodam
which is all of Holland built in
miniature in a large park
setting. It is close to the
Hague, another beautiful city
once you get into the centre.
If you visit in the summer the
beaches near the Hague are
good with p lenty o f
restaurants. Our favourite is
called Wassenaarseslag (no
this is not a spelling error!)
and is easily reached by
cycling on the many excellent
cycle paths through the sand
dunes. Utrecht which is about
20 minutes from Amsterdam is a lovely compact city and easy to get around, there
is the Dom Tower, again with great views and lots of restaurants on the water’s
edge below street level. These are only a very few of the many things that you
might like to see and do in this lovely country and as my sister is moving to Los
Angeles in April, our visit in March will sadly be the last for a little while.

The Joy of Easter
Dear Parishioners,
I have just returned from Scotland where Karen and I were visiting family.
Although we spent a lot of the time rushing from one house to another it was
good to have the opportunity to spend time together. It was also a time for me
to reflect on the many things happening in our parish. In particular I am very
conscious of the number of people who are journeying through illness. As we
prepare for the great festival of Easter and the joy that it brings to our lives I am
mindful of those for whom joy seems absent - as your rector please be assured
of my thoughts and prayers and that even in the midst of pain, sorrow and fear
you are not alone.
Carry Centre
Please see the latest update of this important project on page 6.
Easter Vestry
The Annual Easter Vestry will be held on Sunday 6th April. It is a good
opportunity to reflect on the past year and hear about plans for the year to
come. Your presence and support would be very welcome.
Golf Outing
I draw your attention to this on page 20.
Holy Week and Easter
As usual we are preparing for Holy Week and Easter. This year we join with
neighbouring churches for services in Holy Week. More details on the back
cover. On Easter Sunday we will have our annual Easter Bonnet competition -
prizes for Gentlemen, Ladies, Boy and Girl!
With all good wishes,

The Carry Hall / Centre
Work continues on the Carry Hall project. In
February the building committee and Architect met
with Hall users to give a brief outline of the proposed
works and to respond to needs/queries of hall users.
The tendering process will hopefully begin in late
February / early March.
The pledging has happily surpassed all expectations with over €30,000 already
pledged. Thank you to all concerned!
After careful thought and consideration it has been decided to amalgamate the April
Fundraiser and May Social into one event—more details on page 15.
Building work is due to commence in early June with the Centre re-opening on
Sunday 7th September 2014.

Sports Spot—Chloe Watkins
Hockey has been the preferred sport in my
family, and it was only natural that I too grew
to love it. My dad played international hockey
before immersing himself into coaching, which
was where I had my first encounter. He
coached the national school’s hockey team,
and brought me along aged 5, as I was too
young and didn’t officially start hockey until
the following year. I haven’t put the stick
down since, and have been lucky enough to be
involved with the Irish Women’s Senior Team since July 2010. I’ve already
experienced the highs and lows of playing international sport, as we missed out on
Olympic Qualification last year in our final game. The following September we went
on to claim bronze medals in the Champions Challenge. I am currently in Spain
studying, and playing hockey with Club de Campo in Madrid. It’s been very different
but I’m enjoying the challenge. I hope to continue training hard in order to get
selected for our upcoming Champions Challenge tournament in May, all part of our
preparations towards qualifying for the Olympics in Rio 2016.
Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service for the Gift of Sport
This year, the Annual Ecumenical
Thanksgiving Service for the Gift of
Sport will take place in St Ann’s
Church, Dawson St., Dublin on Sunday
30th March at 7pm. This will be the
65th successive year of this unique
sporting occasion.
The Guest speaker will be Senator
Eamonn Coghlan, the Music will be led
by The King’s Hospital choir and the
chosen charity is The Children’s
Medical and Research Foundation,
Crumlin.
Everybody associated with Sport, young or old, administrator or player is invited to
attend.

A Killiney community group of textile lovers sharing
talents producing quality crafts
We meet on Thursdays at 11 am in the Carry Hall, Killiney.
We have over twenty members from within the community and are pleased to report
that all our hats, scarves and mittens have been delivered to the Alice Leahy trust. The
baby Knitted products were delivered to the Mothers’ Unions for the Rotunda,
Coombe, Tallaght, & Our Ladies Children’s hospitals. All were gratefully received.
The other many products were sold at the Christmas sale where a respectful sum of
money was made for the Parish. These combined efforts have been very worthwhile in
the knowledge that the homeless, small babies& children have had some comfort from
our efforts. We welcome anyone interested in joining our fun group to share more
talents. Cost €3-€5 to include homemade biscuits & some wool, coffee kindly

AROUND THE HOME - Home Insulation.
We have just had our house insulated internally. We were very
lucky that the weather was dry, because the panels could be cut
to shape in the open air. Even so, an incredible amount of dust
was produced. Our workmen were extremely busy, arriving early
and slaving away all day. They vacuumed up the day’s debris each
evening, using their own machine. After the panels were put in
place, a very skilful plasterer did a wonderful job, moving around
with ease on a pair of stilts. Electrical sockets
were relocated to suit us. The radiators required extension pieces
and the piped TV cable fittings needed to be moved. The rooms are
a bit smaller now, but draughts are a thing of the past, hopefully.
The attic has a new floor, but hoarding has been banned! Despite all
the inconvenience, we are now delighted to have the job well done.

Archbishop dedicates gifts
A range of gifts which will
enhance the practical and
worship life of Holy Trinity
Church, Killiney, were
dedicated by Archbishop
Michael Jackson on Sunday
February 2, the Feast of the
Presentation.
The gifts, which range from
Advent candles to a piano,
were from parishioners.
Church wardens, Linda
Peters and Stephen Rhys–
Thomas, sought their
blessing from the Archbishop.
In his sermon, Archbishop Jackson spoke of the dedication of Jesus and Samuel and
said that things changed drastically and radically through both dedications. He said
it was not possible to live without the joy of change and new life. “Every day is a
gift from God; every day is a radical day; and every day is a day of change because
night and day, day and night of themselves speak wonderfully of change and return
change to us as a gift to do with change what we will and what we must,” he
stated.
While celebrating the Presentation of Jesus in The Temple, the parish was also
celebrating the generosity of its people in the gifts they have given for others to
enjoy and in memory of people and situations which matter deeply to them, the
Archbishop said.(The Archbishop’s sermon is reproduced in full below.)
“As well as the things themselves that people have given, we celebrate the gifts
which lie within the gifts. There is the gift of commitment, by which people have
decided to offer something of themselves, in memory of someone who means so
much to them, for the enjoyment of others. This is a commitment on their part to
others and it is a commitment to their desire that the life of this community will
flourish and develop in new ways. There is the gift of generosity, because always it
is possible for people to do otherwise with their money. People who want to be
generous are thinking of other people first and are genuinely delighted when
others enjoy what they receive. This is what makes a day like today so special in
the life of this parish. It is when people whom we know and people who know us
are generous with themselves and with what they want to have others enjoy and
share,” he said.

our mental and physical health. We are looking
for 100 adults aged over 60 who are living alone,
and who would like to receive a visitor once
weekly for 8 weeks during 2014. Your visitor will
be fully trained, and Garda-vetted, and aged over
55. Your visitor will bring ingredients for a meal that you will both prepare and enjoy
together. We are also looking to recruit individuals aged 55+ who would be willing
to participate in our day of training and deliver the intervention in the homes of our
participants. We will cover the costs of the meal, so there is no cost associated with
participating! If you are interested in finding out more, please email Dr Joanna
McHugh, at [email protected] or call 01 896 8414.

Green Fingers - Tips for March/April
Spring time is here and the garden is waking up! It's no wonder
that this time of year is the time of resurrection. After the long
winter, it is such a pleasure to watch the first tentative shoots of
those bulbs planted last Autumn begin to poke up through the
cold, but nevertheless slowly warming, soil. It takes time to
produce a garden and to fully participate in it. In an age of instant
rewards, the process of gardening and growing takes time:
planning, patience, and practice are required. Gardens are never
static. There is always change. There is always the creation of
something new, however subtle the new may be. No two seasons are the same in the
garden. We learn to appreciate the ever present moment of now. Gardens are
sanctuaries in this busy modern world. We rush about to get things done. I've been lucky
to visit Zen moss gardens in Kyoto in Japan. In the West we say "A rolling stone gathers
no moss". In Japan there are moss gardens that have taken decades to develop. The
Japanese say "Be still like a rock, that way you will gather some moss"! So, be sure to
spend some time sitting in your garden in silence, perhaps gathering some moss this
summer!" Mike Wride

A day in the life of …. Mark Scott-Lennon
General Manager & Director, Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel
I am proud and privileged to be recently appointed to my new
position here in the Castle. It is amazing for me to follow in the
footsteps of my granddad Paddy Fitzpatrick and my mother Eithne
Fitzpatrick Scott-Lennon seeing the business through into a third
generation.
I am extremely lucky to work with a team of dedicated hospitality
professionals with a huge amount of loyalty and commitment to
continuing our tradition of personalised hospitality.
My typical day starts with a team meeting with all managers on duty to discuss any
issues and the day ahead. We have a very diverse range of customers to look after
daily. With Conferences for hundreds of delegates, communions, confirmations, 2
restaurants, 2 bars, 113 bedrooms and a Fitness Centre to manage every day tends
to bring a lot of excitement and challenges. My job is to motivate all managers and
encourage them to improve their departments on a daily basis. I also have
responsibility for driving the budget on t both the top and bottom line and all that
falls in between. Although it is a job that is hard to step away from I do try to set
aside some time to play rugby with my local club Blackrock College RFC. What I
enjoy most is meeting and chatting with our guests especially our loyal neighbours
whom have been frequenting the Castle since my grandparents opened the doors
over 43 years ago. I take great pride in working in the family business and working
alongside my mother Eithne who has a passion for what she does that is infectious.
