I hope you had a great, and not overly stressful, Holiday season. My wish for you as we look forward to the start of a new decade is for great success and wondrous adventures, beyond your wildest dreams. This past year was truly a year of growth and new life for all of our affiliate organizations. We look forward to continuing to build on the involvement of so many

new folks, along with our steadfast members, as we further solidify the bonds that come through personal association. For me, personally, it was also quite the trans-formative year. I so appreciate all the recognition and warmth so many have directed my way, and the incredible and sustaining support we continue to enjoy for our efforts in the industry. As one friend in the associations said to me on the eve of being presented the CCNC’s Professional Of The Year award - “Congratulations, I heard you won the ‘old-timer’s award’.”While that notion did occur to me, as I’ve been around this industry since way back in the day - last century, even, I felt so honored to be chosen for such recognition. I actually had numerous similar experiences last year. I was presented with our Rotary club’s distinguished “Quiet Rotarian” award; my BNI networking group named me as a Notable Marketer; and most recently, I was presented with the CSBA’s 2019 Golden Quill award for excellence in Journalism. CSBA is the California School Boards As-sociation. I was nominated by the board of the Lammersville Unified School District in Mountain House. Quite a distinguished honor, once again. My point being, we all do the work we do and strive to deliver as best we can. These types of recognitions certainly serve to validate the efforts, but I don’t know anyone who is out actively seeking such accolades. Usually, we do what we do out of a sense

of service, without thought of recognition. In a way, all this becomes more to live up to.In case you missed my last E-News edition, I want to acknowledge someone in particular who has been there for me literally my entire life, and who has played such an important role with our ANN efforts, especially this past decade, but even beyond: Lynna Harrison, my mom and our Customer Services Manager, has officially retired from daily chores with the business as of year-end."The Great Munsay" has long been my loving nickname for this amazing woman. She has been so instrumental in keeping operations on track while always providing a kind and supportive voice for our valued clients and associates.I've been working to find ways to cover the void that’s now left following her daily presence in business for so long. We'll do all we can, but nothing will truly replace all she brought to the table. That said, I am excited for her to get to more fully enjoy her own passions, and am loving not always having to talk shop.I want to also thank all of the people who continue to help make our communications efforts possible. Our ad sponsors in particular, both in print and on our affiliate web sites, truly enable all our efforts to happen. Thank you. Also, leadership players throughout our network have been amazing, demonstrating over and over what a positive difference can be made through engaging.May your days grow brighter as they grow longer, and may you know inner peace and harmony moving forward.Warmest regards!

2020 brings greater protections for insurance consumersas new laws sponsored by Commissioner Ricardo Lara go into effectSACRAMENTO, CA — Californians will benefit from stronger insurance protections as six new state laws de-signed with consumers in mind took effect January 1, 2020. Several other consumer protection laws will take ef-fect later in the year.“We won many victories for California consumers last year, and secured more protections for homeowners, motorists, seniors, and diverse businesses,” said Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara. “I am looking forward to a new year creating additional new protections for consumers, including those affected by catastrophic wildfires. We will continue working with our partners, the Legisla-ture, and the Governor to make a better California for all in 2020.”AUTO INSURANCEBeginning January 1, consumers now have the right to choose a cash pay-ment in lieu of repairing a damaged vehicle under an automobile insurance policy thanks to Assembly Bill 1538, authored by Assembly Member Shir-ley Weber. This new law helps protect low income drivers, allowing policy-holders to collect an insurance claim even if they choose not to repair the vehicle.

The California Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program, which helps pro-vide auto liability insurance to new drivers in under-served communities, has been extended to January 1, 2025 as a result of Senate Bill 570, authored by Senator Susan Rubio.Among other things, this new law also extends eligibility to students if they reside at the same address where they are claimed as a dependent. Economic empowerment of diverse small businessesSenate Bill 534, authored by Senator Steven Bradford, encourages the $310 billion insurance industry to use its buying power to benefit diverse small businesses. SB 534 extends innovative programs that bring increased trans-parency and opportunities for partner-ship between the nation’s largest insur-ance market and woman-, minority-, LGBT- and veteran-owned businesses.Investment in under-servedcommunitiesThis year, the California Organized Investment Network (COIN) will con-tinue thanks to Assembly Bill 1099, authored by Assembly Member Ian Calderon. The new law will allow this

important program at the Department to continue its mission in investing into California’s under- served com-munities and helping the economic development of the state. The COIN program encourages insurers to be supportive of investments that pro-mote social, economic, and environ-mental benefits.Pet insurancePet owners will also see greater pro-tections with their pet insurance pol-icies as Assembly Bill 1535, authored by Assembly Member Wendy Carril-lo, takes effect. This new law requires pet insurers to disclose the contact information for the underwriting in-surer, the agent or broker, and the Department of Insurance to consum-ers that hold pet insurance policies. This new law will provide consumers with greater transparency and help streamline the line of communication between pet owners and their pet in-surance carriers so that insurers cannot hide behind confusing brand names to avoid claims or complaints.Health and long-term careSenate Bill 784, authored by the Sen-ate Committee on Health, conforms state law to both recent federal stat-utory changes, and adopted National Association of Insurance Commis-sioners (NAIC) Model Regulations made to the Medicare program and, specifically, Medicare Supplement policies issued on or after January 1, 2020 in order to ensure compliance with the federal Medicare Access and Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act.

Two additional Commis-sioner- sponsored consumer

protection laws are set to take effect beginning July 1, 2020 including:Senate Bill 740, authored by Senator Holly Mitchell, will require insurers to identify deceased individuals whose deaths may require insurers to pay benefits or proceeds to beneficiaries in accordance with the terms of life in-surance policies, annuity contracts, or retained asset accounts. Under this new landmark law, insurers are now required to attempt to locate beneficiaries of the deceased individ-uals and provide appropriate claims forms or instructions to the benefi-ciaries to make a claim. This new law follows up on nearly a decade of mar-ket conduct exams and enforcement actions conducted by the Department against life insurers as part of a nation-wide effort.Senate Bill 508, authored by Senator Connie Leyva, will place residents of mobile homes, condominiums, and rental housing on equal footing with homeowners when it comes to know-ing about their rights under California law by requiring insurers to provide the Residential Property Insurance Disclosure statement and the Cali-fornia Residential Property Insurance Bill of Rights Disclosure. In addition, Commissioner Lara sup-ported Assembly Bill 1816, authored by Assembly Member Tom Daly, which will require insurers to provide at least a 75-day notice when they non-renew a homeowners’ policy for a policy that expires on or after July 1, 2020. This additional time will give homeowners a chance to shop for a new policy and consider their options.

Their mission statement says it: “Contra Costa ARC exists to enhance and enrich the lives of children with special needs and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Love A Child Missionsis a ministry started in 1984 that was quickly turned into a homeless shelter for women and children with an inspiration from the spiritu-al. A weekly children’s ministry was started, with mostly fatherless children that were being raised by single mothers. Weekly events included swimming, hiking, camping and good clean fun outside of the drug infested neighborhoods they were living in. For over 30 years, Love A Child Missions has been providing women and children with services they need to ease and end their crisis of homelessness and substance abuse. Today they are one of the largest homeless recovery shelters for women and children in Contra Costa County, serving over 300 women and children annually. https://loveachildmissions.org/

Rooms of HopeROOMS OF HOPE is a 501(c) non-profit organization serving 9 coun-ties that make up the San Francisco Bay Area. Rooms of Hope gives back a little bit of control to sick children who often lose their say in daily activities, including going to school or having play dates because of their depressed immune systems and need for medical attention. Usually, they can no longer participate in sports or other extracurricular activities. Daily routines go from being “normal” to now being all about hospital visits or being at home while the rest of world moves forward without them. But Rooms Of Hope brings something wonderful to look forward to and give each child their voice. This gift goes on well beyond their amazing reveal of their dream space. While at home, this is their place of inspiration, healing and solace." www.roomsofhope.org/

ing her appointment to that position earlier in 2019 with the departure of Hailey Ayres.Kudos were given to outgoing Pres-ident/now Immediate Past President, Jennifer Pinney (who was unable to attend), for her dynamic leadership the past two years. All agreed that she, and her board, have made a tremendous difference for the orga-nization, and community at large.Ms. Houser then took a few moments to present well-wishes, flowers and a nice card signed by many to longtime member and Membership Chair, Lyn-na Harrison, who had announced that she had decided to fully retire. Lynna spoke briefly, thanking everyone for their kindness, and expressing her delight at the new growth EBCA is experiencing. “I love you all,” she said. The main feature for the day was the introduction of, and donation presen-tations to, the 2019 EBCA Charitable beneficiaries. EBCA Speaker Chair and Charitable Committee member, Kathleen Taylor introduced each of the non-profit representatives, all of whom were lead players in their respective or-ganizations.Taylor Family Foundation CEO, Angie Carmignani, led off the pre-sentations, expressing her gratitude to the board and the membership for selecting their organization for this year. She shared some background and a quick overview of the amazing work their organization does.Love-A-Child Missions’ Jerome Knott followed. The shelter focuses

on recovery for women and families with children, assisting with finding gainful employment for their clien-tele, among other services.“Tent city invasion is inevitable if we do not address these problems,” he stated flatly. He added that the county has experienced a 43% increase in those experiencing homelessness in the last year.John Balle, Executive Director at the Contra Costa ARC (Advocacy, Respect, Commitment), followed Mr. Knott. The CCARC, he said, serves more than 1,100 people on a daily ba-sis. One of their key services is early intervention for kids with special needs, he explained. They help with finding community resources, teach-ing life skills, and finding supported employment, amongst other services.Ms. Shelley Ham, founder of the Rooms Of Hope organization, ad-dressed the EBCA membership with heartfelt stories of fulfilling their mission. Rooms Of Hope provides dream bedrooms and spaces for children dealing with life threatening medical issues. “We work to bring hope and some joy to children liter-ally battling for their lives,” she said. This meeting also featured the annual EBCA Toy Drive. Members brought new, unwrapped, toys and/or books for kids of a variety of ages that were taken for donation to Shelter, Inc.There was a special feeling of good-ness in the air at this event. Everyone involved in the East Bay Claims Association should feel a real sense of pride in giving back to our greater community.

East Bay Claims Association 2020 Membership

Get On-Board

The East Bay Claims Association depends on membership dues as a main source of sustainability. Memberships are done on a calendar year basis. You may join as an individual member, or sign-up with up to three (3) individuals with a corporate mem-bership.

As a member of the EBCA, you are encouraged to get involved! Beyond attending the regular luncheon meetings and other events the organization produces throughout the year, help is needed on committees and, ultimately, on the board of directors.

You can play a part in helping to shape a positive future for EBCA. That all starts by renewing your annual membership for the com-ing year. Do it today!

For more information and ways in which you can possibly con-tribute, speak with one of your EBCA officers or board members today! You can have a say!
