Earth Star Up FrontSECOND INSCRIPTION CONFIRMING MMAAYYANAN CCALENDARALENDAR END DATE FOUND

A rchaeologists have found carv-ings in a stone staircase at theLa Corona dig site in

Guatemala which confirm the ‘end date’of the Maya calendar, December 21,2012. It is only the second knowninscription which confirms this ‘enddate’.

New Age sects around the worldhave interpreted this as a potentialdoomsday event—with sales of blastshelters rising in the U.S. and believerstaking refuge in a village in France.

The Mayan tablets are the subjectof wild internet conspiracy theories,

with predictions our world will be swal-lowed by a black hole, hit by an asteroidor devoured by ancient gods.

The 1,300-year-old inscription isdescribed as one of the most significanthieroglyphic finds in decades.

Most of the inscription, carved intoa stone abandoned by looters, deals withpolitical history—but there is a refer-ence to ‘the end’ in a passage about aking’s return.

‘This was a time of great politicalturmoil in the Maya region and this kingfelt compelled to allude to a larger cycle

of time that happensto end in 2012,’ saysDavid Stuart of theUniversity of Texas atAustin, who led a digat the site.

But many ethnicMayans dismiss theapocalyptic predic-tions as largely aWestern idea.

Rather than theend of time itself, theinscriptions refer tothe start of a new era.

The ‘apocalypse’ refers tothe end of a cycle of 5,125years since the beginning ofthe Mayan Long Count calen-dar in 3113 B.C.

‘The story started withclaims that Nibiru, a supposedplanet discovered by theSumerians, is headed towardEarth,’ says Nasa, ‘Thesefables were linked to the end ofone of the cycles in the ancientMayan calendar at the wintersolstice in 2012.’

What Canuto and Barrientosfound was the longest text everdiscovered in Guatemala.

Carved on staircase steps, itrecords 200 years of LaCorona history, states DavidStuart, director of theMesoamerica Center at TheUniversity of Texas at Austin, who was part of a 1997 expedi-tion that first explored the site.

Most of the inscription, carved into a stone abandoned

by looters, deals withpolitical history—butthere is a reference to‘the end’ in a passageabout a king’s return.

While decipheringthese new finds in May,Stuart recognized the2012 reference on astairway block bearing56 delicately carvedhieroglyphs.

It commemorateda royal visit to La

Corona in AD 696 by the most powerfulMaya ruler of that time, YuknoomYich’aak K’ahk’ of Calakmul, only afew months after his defeat by long-standing rival Tikal in AD 695.

Thought by scholars to have beenkilled in this battle, this ruler was visit-ing allies and allaying their fears afterhis defeat.

‘This was a time of great politicalturmoil in the Maya region and this kingfelt compelled to allude to a larger cycleof time that happens to end in 2012,’says Stuart.

So, rather than prophesy, the 2012reference places this king’s troubledreign and accomplishments into a largercosmological framework.

‘In times of crisis, the ancient Mayaused their calendar to promote continu-ity and stability rather than predict apoc-alypse,’ says Canuto.

‘This text talks about ancient politi-cal history rather than prophecy,’ saysMarcello A. Canuto, dco-director of theexcavations at La Corona.—Daily Mail, UK

SCIENTISTS DEVELOPSCIENTISTS DEVELOP SSSSPPPPRRRRAAAAYYYY----OOOONNNN BABATTERTTERYY

S cientists in the United Stateshave developed a paint that canstore and deliver electrical

power just like a battery.Traditional lithium-ion batteries

power most portable electronics. Theyare already pretty compact but limitedto rectangular or cylindrical blocks.

Researchers at Rice University inHouston, Texas, have come up with atechnique to break down each elementof the traditional battery and incorpo-rate it into a liquid that can be spray-painted in layers on virtually any sur-face.

“This means traditional packagingfor batteries has given way to a muchmore flexible approach that allows allkinds of new design and integrationpossibilities for storage devices,” saidPulickel Ajayan, who leads the team onthe project.

The rechargeable battery is made

from spray-painted layers, with eachrepresenting the components of a tradi-tional battery: two current collectors, acathode, an anode and a polymer sepa-rator in the middle.

The paint layers were airbrushedonto ceramics, glass and stainless steel, and on diverse shapes such as thecurved surface of a ceramic mug, totest how well they bond.

One limitation of the technology isin the use of difficult-to-handle liquidelectrolytes and the need for a dry andoxygen-free environment when mak-ing the new device.

The researchers are looking forcomponents that would allow construc-tion in the open air for a more efficientproduction process and greater com-mercial viability.

Neelam Singh, who worked on theproject, believes the technology couldbe integrated with solar cells to give

any surface a stand-alone energy cap-ture and storage capability.

The researchers tested the deviceusing nine bathroom tiles coated withthe paint and connected to each other. When they were charged, the batteriespowered a set of light-emitting diodesfor six hours, providing a steady 2.4volts.

The results of the study were pub-lished in the journal Nature ScientificReports. —Newsdaily.com

E ighteen “supertrees”—artificialtrees up to 165 feet tall—wererecently unveiled to the public

in a new garden in Singapore. The mechanical trees contain verti-

cal gardens, generate solar power, col-lect rainwater and filter air for nearbybuildings. They’re covered in over162,900 tropical plants, includingbromeliads, orchids, ferns, and tropicalflowering climbers. Eleven of the treeshave solar panels, providing energy tothe conservatory buildings below. In thedaytime, the trees will help provideshade and shelter for garden visitors, and absorb and disperse heat. At night, the solar power from the trees will beused to fill them with light.

Some of the tallest trees areconnected by “skywalks,”allowing visitors to walkbetween them and look at thepark below. The park, the new250-acre Gardens by the Bay,also contains two conservatoriesholding plants from around theworld. One of the conservato-ries uses plant waste to feed asteam turbine, generating more

on-site renewable energy. The park is part of the country’s

plan to transform Singapore into a “cityin a garden.” Costing $1 billion to buildand designed by Grant Associates, thegovernment hopes that the garden willhelp bring new visitors. —RevModo.com

The Massachussets-based company,Fenugreen, aims to address this wastewith its simple innovation, FreshPaper.Fenugreen was founded by two friends,Kavita M Shukla, inventor ofFreshPaper, and Swaroop Samant, amedical doctor. Kavita developed andpatented FreshPaper while in highschool, after she stumbled upon itsspices and botanicals in a medicinal hotdrink given to her by her grandmother inIndia to prevent a reaction to contami-nated tap water.

The five-inch square paper is com-prised of edible organic botanicalextracts, and is simply placed intorefrigerator drawers, cartons, bags andcontainers with produce. With no zeo-lite, sodium permanganate, charcoal, orplastic, a sheet extends produce life bytwo to four times.

The simple magic happens thanksto a secret mix of herbs—similar to what

are used for medicinal purposes—thatinhibit bacterial and fungal growth, aswell as degradative enzymes. Sheets canbe used and reused over the course oftwo or three weeks and then composted.

FreshPaper has launched in WholeFoods Market stores across the entireNortheast and North Atlantic regionsthis month. Said Shukla of the partner-ship with Whole Foods:

We sell FreshPaper to make it avail-able to those who need it most. We’reexcited to partner with Whole FoodsMarket because of the opportunity todevelop our ‘Buy One, Give One’ pro-gram [for every package sold,

Fenugreen will donate one to foodbanks or nonprofits in less-economical-ly developed countries] and bringFreshPaper to all—the 1.6 billion peopleliving without refrigeration in the devel-oping world, as well as food banks andfood pantries here at home that struggleto provide fresh, healthy food to thehungry.

6.9 Million U.S. Households Gave Up Cable TV Last Year

I t started with homes, then cars, and now penny-pinchingAmericans, especially minorities,

are giving up cable TV because theyjust can’t afford it in the lingeringrecession.

Instead, they are switching back tofree TV, improved with the recentswitch to digital broadcast whichrequires a special antenna but elimi-nates the $70-$100 monthly cable, satellite or broadband service fee.

Industry officials had worried thatAmericans would begin “cord-cutting”in a shift to internet TV, but the reces-sion is more to blame, not internetbling.

“It’s not so much cord-cutting ascost-cutting that's motivating this.

There’s possibly recessionary issueshere,” said Dennis Wharton, spokesman for the NationalAssociation of Broadcasters.

An ownership survey conductedby GfK Media found that about 6.9million homes abandoned pay TV lastyear, a shocking number that industrysources chalk up to the sagging econo-my. What's more, the survey found thatthe number of Americans watchingonly free-TV surged from 46 million to54 million. GfK said that means abouteighteen percent of all homes withTVs, or 21 million, watch only free-TV, a jump from about fourteen percentjust five years ago.

“When asked why they cancelledTV service, the overwhelming majority,

over seventy percent, cited cost-cut-ting; cord-cutting because of onlineoptions was cited by less than twentypercent,” said Dave Tice senior vicepresident of GfK.

Younger Americans, minoritiesand low-income homes, socked byunemployment and the economy havejumped the cable ship in the highestnumbers. The GfK poll found thatminorities make up forty-four percentof all broadcast-only homes.

But according to Wharton, theshift isn’t all bad. He said that moreand more cable-like shows are now onfree digital broadcast, especially thosefor minorities. “There is sort of anexplosion in free network program-ming,” he said. —Washington Examiner

Woman Stuns Researchers by Overcoming Cancer with TTurmericurmeric Spice

W hile expensive cancerdrugs linked to prematuredeath and mega-tumors are

pushed by many mainstream doctors asthe only option outside of chemotherapy,a growing number of informed individ-uals are consistently opting to insteadutilize natural methods that are knownto conquer cancer cells and effectivelynegate the disease—without harsh sideeffects.

One such person, Vicky Stewart ofBritain, chose such a path when sherefused mainstream medical cancertreatments and instead began consum-ing powerful turmeric spice.

Despite excessive warnings fromMD’s who insisted that Vicky wouldsurely not recover using superfoods

that are commonly touted as ‘woo’ and‘ineffective medicine’ by pharma-backed doctors, Stewart found amaz-ing success by altering her lifestyle andtaking in extra amounts of superfoodslike turmeric each day.

Stewart recalls to The Telegraphhow her doctor repeatedly voiced con-cern over switching to a healthy dietfull of turmeric to fight the cancer (oneof many turmeric health benefits),telling her that it would do virtuallynothing: “The doctors absolutely willnot say that the diet is going to do any-thing to help the cancer in any way.”

Four years later with absolutely nomainstream treatments, she is still can-cer free with no signs of it comingback. At the age of 44, Stewart is now

the center of a major research projectled by scientists who are downrightfascinated by what she has done.

While it is indeed fascinating, itshould come as no surprise that Vickyhealed herself naturally using turmericand other lifestyle changes. In fact, copious amounts of research highlightthe anti-cancer properties of turmeric(in many cases due to it’s active com-pound curcumin), and countless indi-viduals have used it to aid themselvesin the fight against many diseases.—The Telegraph, UK

75 Percent of all “Honey” Sold in Stores Contains NoNo Honey At All

J ust because those cute little bear-shaped bottles at the grocery storesay “honey” on them does not

necessarily mean that they actually con-tain honey. A comprehensive investiga-tion conducted by Food Safety News(FSN) has found that the vast majorityof so-called honey products sold at gro-cery stores, big box stores, drug stores, and restaurants do not contain anypollen, which means they are not realhoney.

For the investigation, VaughnBryant, one of the nation’s leadingmelissopalynologists, or experts in iden-tifying pollen in honey, and director ofthe Palynology Research Laboratory atTexas A&M University, evaluated morethan sixty products labeled as “honey”that had been purchased by FSN fromten states and the District of Columbia.

Bryant found that 76 percent of“honey” samples purchased from majorgrocery store chains like Kroger andSafeway, and 77 percent of samples pur-chased from big box chains like Sam’sClub and Wal-Mart, did not contain anypollen. Even worse were “honey” sam-ples taken from drug stores likeWalgreens and CVS, and fast foodrestaurants like McDonald’s and KFC,100 percent of which were found tocontain not a trace of pollen.—World Truth.TV

Earth Star Up FrontGIANT CRYSTAL PPYRAMIDYRAMID DISCOVERED IN BBERMUDAERMUDA TTRIANGLERIANGLE

T he Bermuda Triangle: mysteri-ous, unworldly, sometimesdeadly. For decades intrepid

researchers delved into the maze ofmysteries hidden deep within this mostenigmatic place on Earth.

Some speculate the bizarre timeanomalies, disappearances and weirdphenomena can be explained by naturaloccurences. Others are insistent thatrelics of an advanced, unknown cultureleft behind fantastic technology…greatenergy machines that literally warpspacetime and open portals to otherrealities.

Now American and French explor-ers have made a monumental discovery:a partially translucent, crystal-like pyra-mid rising from the Caribbean seabed—its origin, age and purpose completelyunknown.

A gigantic structure, perhaps largerthan the Great Pyramid of Cheops inEgypt, and initially identified by a doc-

tor in the 1960s, has been independentlyverified by diving teams from Franceand the U.S

The discovery has rocked scientistsaround the world. Will they rush toinvestigate it? No, they’re more likely tostudiously ignore it. If pressed, they’llofficially position themselves as highlyskeptical especially in light of the potentialramifications.

The pyramid could confirm someengineers’ contentions that pyramidswere originally created as massivepower sources, support the claim thatthe ancient city-state of Atlantis didexist, or even provide answers to themysterious goings-on that have beenrecorded since the 19th Century in theregion of the Atlantic dubbed theBermuda Triangle.

According to the history, the pyra-mid was accidentally discovered during1968 by a doctor of naturopathy, RayBrown of Mesa, Arizona.

Brown was in the Caribbean onvacation and making dives with friendsin a region off the Bahamas known as“the Tongue of the Ocean.” The areaacquired that name because a tongue-shaped portion of the seabed extends outfrom the island before sharply droppingoff into much greater depths. —Zen Haven

Our TThirhird Eyd Eyee: The Biggest Cover-Up in Human History

T he pineal gland (also calledthe pineal body, epiphysiscerebri, epiphysis or the “third

eye”) is a small endocrine gland in thevertebrate brain. It produces the sero-tonin derivative melatonin, a hormonethat affects the modulation ofwake/sleep patterns and seasonal func-tions. Its shape resembles a tiny pinecone (hence its name), and it is locatednear the center of the brain, betweenthe two hemispheres, tucked in agroove where the two rounded thalamicbodies join.

The Secret: What They Don’tWant You to KNOW!

Every human being’s Pineal Gland orthe third eye can be activated to spiri-tual world frequencies and enables youto have the sense of all knowing, god-like euphoria and oneness all aroundyou. A pineal gland, once tuned in toproper frequencies with help of medi-tation, yoga or various esoteric, occultmethods, enables a person to travel intoother dimensions, popularly known asastral travel, astral projection or remote

viewing. With more advanced practiceand ancient methods it is also possibleto control the thoughts and actions ofpeople in the physical world. Yes, it isbizarre, but the United States, formerSoviet Union governments and variousshadow organizations have been doingthis type of research for ages and havesucceed far beyond our imagination.

The pineal gland is represented inCatholicism in Rome; they depict thepineal as a pine cone in art. Ancientsocieties like the Egyptians and theRomans knew the benefits, and exem-plified this in their vast symbologieswith a symbol ofan eye.

Pineal glandreference is alsofound on theback of the U.S.dollar bill withwhat is called the‘all seeing eye’,which is a refer-ence to the abilityof an individual(or group of indi-

viduals) to use this gland and go to theother side (the spirit world) and controlthe thoughts and actions of people inthe physical world by knowing whatthey are thinking at all times.

Various research being conductedso far confirms that there are certainperiods in the night, between the hoursof one and four in the morning, wherechemicals are released in the brain thatbring about feelings of connectednessto one’s higher source.—Waking Times

A natural drug discovered in thesoil of Easter Island couldimprove the memory of older

people—and even treat Alzheimer’s,researchers say.

In tests in mice, the drug halted thedecline in brain function as they gotolder, and offered hope that it could alsotreat depression.

The drug—rapamycin —is a bacte-rial by-product discovered in the shad-ows of the island’s famous statues.

It is named after Rapa Nui, thePolynesian name for Easter Island, which sits isolated in the Pacific ocean –2000 miles from anywhere.

A natural drug discovered in thesoil of Easter Island could improvememory in older people—and even treatAlzheimer’s, researchers say

It is already used in transplantpatients to prevent organ rejection andnow scientists in journal Neurosciencesay it can improve learning and helptreat cognitive decline.

It could even treat conditions likeAlzheimer’s, they believe.

A team from the University ofTexas added the drug to the diet ofhealthy mice and discovered it improvedlearning and memory in young mice andmemory in elder rodents.

Professor Veronica Galvan said:‘We made the young ones learn, andremember what they learned, better thanwhat is normal.

‘Among the oldermice, the ones fed witha diet includingrapamycin actuallyshowed an improve-ment, negating the nor-mal decline that yousee in these functionswith age.’

The team alsofound three ‘happy,feel-good’ neurotrans-mitters—serotonin,dopamine and norepinephrine—werehigher in the mice treated withrapamycin.

This could help explain the effectson memory, she said, and helped backup previous research which showedAlzheimer’s like syndromes were low-ered in mice treated with the drug.

‘This is super-interesting and some-thing we are going to pursue in the lab,’she said. It also lowered anxiety anddepressive-like behaviour in the mice.

Her colleague Dr Jonathan Halloranused a series of elevated tunnels that ledto a catwalk to examine the behaviour ofthe rodents.

Mice prefer tunnels to open spacesand were watched on the catwalk.

Dr Halloran said: ‘All of a suddenthe mice are in open space.

‘It’s pretty far from the floor fortheir size, sort of like if a person is hik-ing and suddenly the trail gets steep. It’s

pretty far down and not so comfort-able.’Mice with less anxiety were morecurious to explore the catwalk, he said.

He explained: ‘We observed thatthe mice fed with a diet containingrapamycin spent significantly more timeout in the open arms of the catwalk thanthe animals fed with a regular diet.’

Similarly, when mice were handledby their tails they would struggle, butdepressed mice would struggle less.

‘So we can measure how much andhow often they struggle as a measure ofthe motivation they have to get out of anuncomfortable situation,’ said DrGalvan.

‘We found rapamycin acts like anantidepressant—it increases the time themice are trying to get out of the situa-tion. ‘They don’t give up; they strugglemore.’ —Daily Mail, UK

T he US government is experi-menting with different types ofmicro-surveillance capabili-

The Central IntelligenceAgency (CIA) has been workingon this technology since the1970s. Known as the “insceto-thopter”, it was developed by theOffice of Research andDevelopment for the CIA.

It appears to be a dragonfly; how-ever, it contains a tiny gasoline engineto control its four wings. It was subse-

quently classified as a failure because itcould not maintain flight against natu-ral wind patterns.

August’s Full Moon culmi-nates on the 1st, at 10°15'Aquarius, in trine toexpansive Jupiter, height-ening a need for independ-

ence and greater freedom. Indeed, issuesof personal freedom and relationshipexpectations are likely topics for discus-sion now. Rely upon your own inner guid-ance and inspiration if considering newbeginnings or a life-direction change.

A flowing sun-Jupiter alignment, occurson the 2nd, when a precise sextile aspectencourages expanding one’s outlook onlife, and the pursuit of educational goals.Plan a long-distance business trip, orvacation in search of spiritual knowl-edge—a pilgrimage perhaps. Spend timewith friends, or participate in upliftinggroup activities. Reflect on life.

Venus enters Cancer—America’s sunsign—on July 7th, fuelling a fervent loveof country in patriotic Americans overthe next month.

After 3-1/2 weeks in retrograde mode,Mercury stations Direct late on the 7th, at01°26' Leo, a cosmic signal that mentalprocesses are beginning to accelerate, andthat logic and reason will become morereliable. Move ahead cautiously withplans, sign documents—after careful con-sideration. Avoid hasty decisions, as anair of impulsiveness will be rampant for afew days around Mercury’s station.

An opposition between Venus and Plutoperfects on the 15th, when passions rise, and the potential for emotional and finan-cial manipulation exists. However, a morepositive application of this aspect wouldbe through artistic self-expression.

Mars and Saturn align in a precise con-junction on the 15th, in 25° Libra, whenpersistence and perseverance win theday. Banish any feelings of malice orresentment—why create more karma?Set out now, undaunted by recent trialsor tribulations, on your new or newlydefined path with drive, ambition, anddetermination.

The sun and Saturn align in a creativeflow-inducing sextile on the 17th, whenconstructive progress can be madetowards professional or educationalgoals. Combining practicality and cre-ativity achieves the best results now.Advice from an authority figure couldprove helpful.

A new moon at 25°08' Leo occurs onAugust 17th, inaugurating a four-weekcycle of personal creativity. With thelunation closely sextile Mars, it may nowbe apparent that a greater level of self-reliance, self-sufficiency, and independ-ence from traditional constraints may benecessary in order to make progresstowards coveted objectives.

The sun enters Virgo on the 22nd, andfor the next four weeks one’s ability toadapt to necessary changes in plans orschedules is enhanced, while being prac-tical and methodical comes more easily.Do creative work requiring attention todetail.

The red planet, Mars, enters Scorpio, thesign it co-rules with Pluto, on the 23rd(till Oct 6) intensifying emotions anddesires, now and for the next six weeks. However, this is one of the best zodiacalpositions for Mars but its highly chargedenergies here need to be handled well,

and channeled into positive, creative out-lets. Be sure to get plenty of physicalexercise during this period.

One’s ability to discern reality from illu-sion may be impaired on the 24th, whenthe sun opposes Neptune. Beware ofself-delusion or deception, as things orpeople may not be all they seem orappear to be. Be completely open andforthright in all relationships now.

Mars and Neptune align in a flowingtrine on the 25th, when intuitivelyinspired constructive action gets the nod.Practically apply guided imagery tech-niques to manifest your desires. A waveof inspiration could motivate some tobegin a course of spiritual study.

The sun trines Pluto on August 29th,when efforts geared toward self-improvement are strongly favored. Anopportunity may arise to express yourunique creative abilities through busi-ness or career activities, so be enterpris-ing. Carpé diem!

A second full moon this month culmi-nates on August 31st, at 08°34' Pisces, when emotions are more sensitive, andpsychic perceptions are considerablyenhanced. Identify and eliminate theunnecessary in pursuit of your objec-tives, as the energies that are freed upwill help to spur you on towards achiev-ing those goals, while also providingopportunities for healing old wounds.

Mercury slips quietly into Virgo later onthe 31st (till Sept 16th), when logic andreasoning power is enhanced. Put yourmind to work for you now. Cultivateyour organizational skills. Plan projects.

www.earthstarmag.com AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2012 EARTH STAR 1 3

September begins with the possibility ofconfusion and mixed messages on the1st as Mercury opposes Neptune; don’tbe too quick to jump to conclusions asyou may not have all the facts. Check allfigures and details for accuracy, leavenothing to chance.

Mars sextiles Pluto on the 3rd, whenlevel-headed actions combine well withwill power. Improve efficiency whereverpossible. Begin a new physical exerciseregimen.

When Venus enters Leo on July 6th fora four-week transit, affairs of the heartand creative activities receive a helpfulboost, while dramatic self-expressionincreases—a boon for actors!

Mercury trines Pluto then squares Marsover the 4th and 5th, heightening per-ception and quickening the mind. Whatyou learn or read may be profound andcould effect you deeply. Make importantcalls or decisions, and return messages.Plan business strategy.

An element of impetuosity pervades theethers when the sun squares giantJupiter on the 7th. Curb impulsivebehavior, or squandering preciousresources; act only after careful deliber-ation, as you may be inspired to tackleprojects that you normally wouldn’tconsider, or promise more than you canactually deliver. Exercise great care anddiscernment with real estate investmentsor stock market speculation at this time.

There may be too much information com-ing your way on the 8th when Mercurysquares Jupiter. Do your best to keep ontop of details. Remain skeptical of pro-posals or offers now, make sure you haveall the facts.

When the sun and Mercury align in con-junction at 18°12'' Virgo on September10th, you’ll be more inclined to want toexpress your thoughts and views. This isoften a planetary transit that coincideswith important announcements. Be onthe lookout for business or educationalopportunities. Attend to back-loggedcommunications now.

When Venus trines Uranus on the 12than unexpected social invitation or busi-

ness opportunity could occur, whichmay also necessitate a short trip. Be sureto express yourself artistically in someway. Social activities could prove veryinteresting.

September’s new moon arrives on the15th, at 23°37'Virgo, conjunctMercury—Virgo’s ruler; nurture yourspecial talents and skills during the nextfour weeks. Adjustments in the worksector may have to be made, in whichcase, use your intuition and imaginationto help determine job, career or businessmoves. Health awareness and the heal-ing arts are also in sharp focus now, when much potential exists for healingdeep wounds from the past—physical, mental or emotional.

Mercury enters Libra on the 16th (tillOct 5), when the study of human behav-ior patterns—especially your own—canprovide useful relationship insights.Consider both sides of a situation beforemaking decisions. Sales, PR, and com-munications in general are supported bythis transit.

Pluto stations direct on the 17th, in 07°Capricorn, and for several days aroundthis juncture all Plutonic themes, suchas ‘power’, sexuality, joint finances, andcontrol issues are greatly emphasized.Strong seismic activity is also a possi-bility now.

Uranus squares Pluto precisely for thesecond time this year on the 18th, pre-saging a period of radical change, extreme behavior, political upheaval, and an acceleration of geophysical tur-bulence around the planet. Wild andexciting times indeed lay ahead, withdisruptions in daily life and routinesbecoming more commonplace.

Avoid jumping to conclusions or mak-ing impractical decisions on the 20th,when Mercury opposes Uranus, thensquares Pluto. Nervous tension could berunning high so expect to encounterexcitable people, and perhaps radicalbehavior. Sexual tension and passions ingeneral are highly stimulated now, sobe on the lookout for emotional manip-ulation. Financial security and wealthproduction could assume greaterimportance.

Mother Earth reaches the natural mid-point of her annual cycle when the sunenters tropical Libra on September22nd, heralding the autumnal equinox, that pivotal point when day and nightare of equal duration—in perfectequipoise. As always, while the sun is inLibra, we would do well to seek balanceand harmony in our own lives, and espe-cially within key relationships. With themoon conjunct the Galactic Center asthe equinox occurs, keep the biggerpicture in mind as you make choices ordecisions.

A powerful new love attraction or desireexperience may occur when Venussquares Mars on the 27th, but be honestwith yourself because what you thinkyou want isn’t always what you need.Extreme emotional reactions could betriggered now simply by a thoughtlessremark. Avoid financial extravagance, asthe urge to splurge could drain preciousresources. Sensuality is also heightened. This aspect is a good test of one’s abilityto cooperate—or not—with the desiresof others.

The sun opposes Uranus then squaresPluto on the 29th, a cosmic augury toidentify and change behavior patterns orbusiness practices that no longer workfor you. Excessive pressures, from with-in, or without, may even force you tomake some radical changes. Once again, sexual tension and mounting passionsare also part of the mix, when the wisewill avoid attempts at emotional manip-ulation.

September’s full moon culminates lateon the 29th, in 8° Aries, conjunctUranus, and may herald the ending, ortransformation, of a professional part-nership, while the potential for new, more productive associations is seeded.Relationship issues could vie for timeyou might rather devote to personalpursuits. Give others plenty of space!

Following is a general overview of howthe planetary trends for August/September, 2012 apply to each sunsign. If you know your rising sign(Ascendant), read that, too, for additionalinsights.

DDoowwnn TToo EEaarrtthh AAssttrroollooggyyAries (March 20—April 19)

Your creative juices are flowing freely now,so tap into them at every opportunity. With

expansive Jupiter currently in your solar third house youwill likely have plenty of big ideas to keep your mindoccupied. Activities with business partners or associateswill also be vying for your time and energy, so plan yourschedule with plenty of flexibility. A new workassignment or job is possible in September that couldinvolve quite a lot of travel and communications, whileyour ability to handle a myriad of details might also betested. A romance or infatuation could provide aninteresting distraction from your duties or routine, butmay fizzle out as quickly as it began once the rosecolored spectacles are removed.

Taurus (April 19—May 20)

The winds of change may be blowingthrough your domestic environment, as youactively seek to improve the long term secu-

rity of your home base. You have grand dreams for thefuture, which may entail more living space in which tofunction more efficiently and comfortably, and the abilityto work from home if you chose. Take care to adhere toa workable budget, to make the best use of your valu-able resources, as it could be easy to go overboard andspend more than you can afford in your enthusiasm tofeather your nest. Your social calendar could fill upquickly now and you may be much in demand, so it’sjust as well that you may be in the mood for some funand games.

Gemini (May 20—June 21)

Ideas for personal and professionaladvancement flow quickly through your

mind these days and you’re keen to find creative ways inwhich to apply them to your objectives. A dramaticuptick in travel and communications is also likely, particularly after Mercury resumes direct motion onAugust 7th, so keep your schedule flexible. This mayfeel like a fateful time in many ways, as the lunar nodesalign with your solar ascendant/descendant axis, whendestiny may bring bigger, more meaningful events andopportunities your way at a time in your life when youfeel fully capable. Your domestic environment appearsripe for positive change, as your requirement for morespace and stability gains importance. Some Twins-clanmembers may decide that it’s time to move on to newand more inspiring surroundings.

Cancer (June 21—July22)

Financial matters may have been very muchon your mind of late, but the good news isthat a difficult situation could shortly be

resolved, perhaps quite suddenly. With lucky Venus

crossing your solar ascendant into your first house onAugust 7th, and Mercury turning direct in your secondhouse of personal income, your fortunes appear poisedto improve in the weeks ahead. There could be tensionsbrewing within a key relationship that may require greattact and patience on your part to quell. Fortunately youhave the self discipline and sensitivity to settle anydisputes. Be sure to note all of the bright new ideas thatcome to mind these days, as some might enable you tobroaden your horizons and have a positive bearing onyour plans for the future.

Leo (July 22—August 23)

You’re keen to move forward with personalplans, particularly those that have a bearing

on your future security, and on the attainment of animportant goal. With the sun moving through your solarfirst house for much of August your energy level anddetermination are riding high. Be sure to maintaincontact with partners and close associates as their inputand insights could prove valuable. The focus shifts toimproving the state of your finances during September, when you may have several good ideas for increasingyour cash flow. Indeed, one of your key goals just nowmight be to ensure a constant revenue stream to supportan important quest. Be sure to stay on top of yourbookkeeping, and to operate well within your budget.

Virgo (August 23—September 23)

It may seem like you’ve been waiting in thewings forever, ready to take center stage inyour life’s drama. Once Mercury turns direct

on August 7th, the wheels of progress will begin to turnmore quickly and the information or news you’ve beenpatiently waiting for might soon be forthcoming. Keepyour key goals uppermost in your mind and be ready toact at a moment’s notice, as events could unfold at arapid pace and you will need to be on top of your game. You may be travelling more in September, or moreactively involved with communications. Fortunatelyyour energy levels will be on the rise, along with yourdrive and determination to succeed. There may also bechanges on the horizon in the near future that will havea strong impact on both your domestic situation andyour career prospects.

Libra (September 23—October 23)

Much inner growth in recent months mayhave inspired a revision of several key goals, and now you're ready to move forward with

your life into new and possibly uncharted territory—atleast by you. Indeed, you may be keen to expand yourhorizons, and to embrace a new philosophy orworldview, and yet there may still be a few ghosts fromthe past to lay before you feel you’re fully able toprogress. Nonetheless, the personal challenges you'verecently surmounted will stand you in good stead, as

DDoowwnn TToo EEaarrtthh AAssttrroollooggyyyou seek to make inroads into new and exciting worldlyquests. Be sure to allow yourself adequate down time inwhich to recharge your batteries, and to assimilate whatyou’ve learned from past experiences into your new andevolving worldview.

Scorpio (October 23—November 22)

You’ve had time to reassess your career goalsduring Mercury’s retrograde through your

solar tenth house, and may have identified some keyadjustments that need to be made to bring you back ontrack. You may also have recently experienced someform of breakthrough in regard to moving beyond out-dated thought patterns or notions that might have beenholding you back from fully expressing yourself. WhenMars, your sign’s co-ruler (along with Pluto), crossesyour solar ascendant into your sign and solar first housefor the first time in two years on August 23rd, you willfeel a dramatic increase in your drive, energy level, andself confidence, while your assertiveness factor couldgo through the roof! Woe betide anyone that upsets younow lest they feel the sting in your scorpion’s tail. However, you will want to handle the significant othersin your life more delicately, as they could be helpful toyour worldly ambitions.

Sagittarius (November 21—December 21)

You’re feeling more hopeful about the futurethan you’ve felt for some time, and mayrecently have been revising your plans. You

are well aware of the value of the significant others inyour life and want to include them in your grand design,as they contribute to your sense of security and helpkeep you grounded when feeling insecure. You feelconstrained to a rigid timeline in which to see yourgoals manifest as reality, and are keen to make progresstowards important worldly ambitions. Pay attention toyour instincts when it comes to handling finances, butmake practical decisions if considering a majorpurchase as you may be tempted to speculate or indulgelavishly on an impulse.

Capricorn (December 21—January 19)

While delving through your possessions youmay discover items or assets that could have

significant value or worth and consider having themappraised. They just might turn out to be like finding theproverbial treasure in the attic, even though it may havebeen staring you in the face all the time. That’s onebenefit of Mercury retrograde through your solar eighthhouse. You’re feeling much more ambitious these days, and may be keen to make progress towards a worldlyambition or career goal, as you seek to broaden yourhorizons. To this end you may consider enrolling in acourse or study program that might enhance your jobprospects. Pay more attention to your health and fitness

needs; consider implementing a new exercise or dietaryregimen.

Aquarius (January 19—February 18)

You may have recently had second thoughtsabout a proposed partnership venture or

creative alliance, feeling that you might make betterprogress going it on your own. But logic and reasonmay prevail, as you see the benefits of having someoneelse with whom to share the workload andresponsibilities. Nonetheless, you are a free spirit, andneed to be able to work at your own pace and on yourown initiative. And besides, once Mars, the cosmicmotivator, enters your solar tenth house of worldlyambition on August 23rd, you’ll be more inclined totake the quickest route to your objective. You are, infact, very close to seeing one of your fondest dreamsbecome a reality. Meanwhile, constantly reinforce yourvision of the future and patiently, and professionally, work towards your goal.

Pisces (February 18—March 20)

You may have been revising some creativeideas you’ve had on the drawing boards forsome time, and are now ready to brainstorm

anew. In fact inspiration may be flowing quite rapidlynow, and you’re keen to move forward with a project orendeavor that’s important to manifesting a key worldlyobjective. As much as you’d like to be completelyindependent, you realize the value of including asignificant other in your plans, if only to provide anelement of emotional security. With your sign’s ruler,Neptune, currently retrograde and conjunct your solarascendant, it’s important that you maintain a firm gripon reality and to see things as they truly are, lest youdrift off course and lose sight of your objective. Whileyou’re keen to broaden your horizons, allow wisdomand past experience to help keep you on track.

1 6 EARTH STAR AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2012

For many it’s either tin foil conspiracy theoryor an action packed HollywoodArmageddon flick. For the NationalAeronautics and Space Administration it’sa serious threat, with the potential to wipe

out the technologically driven lives we’ve become soused to.

Our sun is approaching a period of high turbulence, referred to as the solar maximum, with many scientistssuggesting a peak in activity around 2013. The cycleoccurs every 11 years, and the next time around it is pre-dicted to be one of the weakest in decades. However, some contrary opinions hold that the next solar maxi-mum may be stronger than we expect, citing a 26,000year galactic alignment cycle, scheduled to occur on oraround 2012, eerily coinciding with the end of theMayan calendar.

One organization that isn’t taking any chances isNASA. As the sun begins to awaken, scientists are keep-ing a close eye on space weather:

“The sun is waking up from a deep slumber, and inthe next few years we expect to see much higher levelsof solar activity. At the same time, our technologicalsociety has developed an unprecedented sensitivity tosolar storms. The intersection of these two issues is whatwe’re getting together to discuss.”

The National Academy of Sciences framed the prob-lem two years ago in a landmark report entitled “SevereSpace Weather Events—Societal and EconomicImpacts.” It noted how people of the 21st-century relyon high-tech systems for the basics of daily life. Smartpower grids, GPS navigation, air travel, financial servic-es and emergency radio communications can all beknocked out by intense solar activity. A century-classsolar storm, the Academy warned, could cause twentytimes more economic damage than Hurricane Katrina.

A 132-page NASA funded report titled SevereSpace Weather Events—Understanding Societal andEconomic Impacts, suggests that the right magnitudestorm could be devastating:

Power Grid is “Particularly VPower Grid is “Particularly Vulnerable ulnerable to Bad Space Wto Bad Space Weather”eather”

Page 17: EARTH STA R - xn--sergiomagaa-beb.comsergiomagaña.com/imgs/EarthStarAug2012.pdf · Ilie Cioara • Charla Devereux • Paul Devereux Sharon Fisher • Deanne Sihr-Fry Zen Gardner

The problem begins with the electric power grid.“Electric power is modern society’s cornerstone technol-ogy on which virtually all other infrastructures and serv-ices depend,” the report notes. Yet it is particularly vul-nerable to bad space weather. Ground currents inducedduring geomagnetic storms can actually melt the copperwindings of transformers at the heart of many power dis-tribution systems. Sprawling power lines act like anten-nas, picking up the currents and spreading the problemover a wide area. The most famous geomagnetic poweroutage happened during a space storm in March 1989when six million people in Quebec lost power for ninehours.

According to the report, power grids may be morevulnerable than ever. The problem is interconnectedness. In recent years, utilities have joined grids together toallow long-distance transmission of low-cost power toareas of sudden demand. On a hot summer day inCalifornia, for instance, people in Los Angeles might berunning their air conditioners on power routed fromOregon. It makes economic sense—but not necessarilygeomagnetic sense. Interconnectedness makes the sys-tem susceptible to wide-ranging “cascade failures.”

To estimate the scale of such a failure, report co-author John Kappenmann of the Metatech Corporationlooked at the great geomagnetic storm of May 1921,which produced ground currents as much as ten timesstronger than the 1989 Quebec storm, and modeled itseffect on the modern power grid. He found more than350 transformers at risk of permanent damage and 130

million people without power. The loss of electricitywould ripple across the social infrastructure with “waterdistribution affected within several hours; perishablefoods and medications lost in 12-24 hours; loss of heat-ing/air conditioning, sewage disposal, phone service, fuel re-supply and so on.”

“The concept of interdependency,” the report notes,“is evident in the unavailability of water due to long-term outage of electric power–and the inability to restartan electric generator without water on site.”

What if the May 1921 superstorm occurred today? The US map (above) shows vulnerable transformerswith areas of probable system collapse encircled.

The potential for major disruptions to our lives andour modern day just-in-time delivery systems could leadto total chaos in affected areas:

“A contemporary repetition of the Carrington Eventwould cause … extensive social and economic disrup-tions,” the report warns. Power outages would be accom-panied by radio blackouts and satellite malfunctions;telecommunications, GPS navigation, banking andfinance, and transportation would all be affected. Someproblems would correct themselves with the fading ofthe storm: radio and GPS transmissions could come backonline fairly quickly. Other problems would be lasting: aburnt-out multi-ton transformer, for instance, can takeweeks or months to repair. The total economic impact inthe first year alone could reach $2 trillion, some twentytimes greater than the costs of a Hurricane Katrina or, touse a timelier example, a few TARPs.

Hypertension, or elevated blood pres-sure, is common for many of us fromtime to time and it has often been thepractice of doctors to treat high bloodpressure by prescribing dangerous

statin drugs. Now, researchers have found that healthywatermelons can do just as good of a job without all thenasty side effects linked to statin drugs.??In a study justpublished in the American Journal of Hypertension, food scientists at Florida State University found thatconsumption of six grams of L-citrulline extract fromwatermelon for six weeks normalized the blood pressureof all nine adults in the study who previously had ele-vated blood pressure.”We are the first to documentimproved aortic hemodynamics in pre-hypertensive butotherwise healthy middle-aged men and women receiv-ing therapeutic doses of watermelon,” said Dr. ArturoFigueroa, lead researcher of the new study. “These find-ings suggest that this ‘functional food’ has a vasodilatoryeffect, and one that may prevent prehypertension fromprogressing to full-blown hypertension, a major risk fac-tor for heart attacks and strokes,” added Figueroa??Theluscious watermelon fruit is the richest edible source of

the amino acid L-citrulline, which regulates healthyblood pressure. L-citrulline is converted to anotheramino acid, L-arginine, once in the body. However, tak-ing L-arginine as a dietary supplement can cause nausea, gastrointestinal problems and diarrhea, especiallyamong adults who already suffer from raised blood pres-sure. “Individuals with increased blood pressure andarterial stiffness—especially those who are older andthose with chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes—would benefit from L-citrulline in either the synthetic ornatural (watermelon) form,” Figueroa said.

Helping lower and control blood pressure is just oneof many health benefits for the traditional summertimefavorite. Watermelons have the highest water content ofany fruit and, in addition to being a supreme thirstquencher, are excellent sources of several vitamins: vita-min A, an antioxidant which helps maintain eye health;vitamin C, which strengthens immunity, heals wounds, prevents cell damage, and promotes healthy teeth andgums; and vitamin B6, which helps brain function andhelps convert protein to energy.

fight heart disease and several types of cancer, especiallyprostate cancer. Watermelon, however, has the highestconcentrations of lycopene of any fresh fruit or veg-etable.

Watermelons also have plenty of thiamine, magne-sium, and potassium which are all vital for optimalhealth. Thus if your children, or perhaps yourself, arereluctant to dig into spinach, other dark green leafy veg-etables or lima beans on a regular basis, servings ofwatermelon would be a very healthy substitute - andwould make a healthy addition at any rate.

Watermelons help muscle and nerve function andhelp maintain the body’s proper electrolyte and acid-base balance. They also reduce the risk of colon cancer, asthma, heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis.Watermelons are also excellent for kidney health as itcan both flush the kidneys and dissolve kidney stones.

One of the most popular and effective natural remediesfor kidney stones is a tea made from watermelon seeds, though often the juice alone in plentiful quantities willdo the trick.

A good way to cleanse both the colon and the kid-neys is to go an entire day consuming nothing but water-melon. Besides flushing the kidneys it will also usuallyclean out the colon as well—so well, in fact, that a goodpiece of advice is to not stray too far from availabletoilet facilities from about mid-afternoon on when doinga watermelon flush!

You may have had one or more sponta-neous lucid dreams, but if you want tobe able to have them more frequently, and more robustly, then you will need towork at it. You can let your “dream-

awareness” nights transform into the nights on whichyou practice the development of lucid dreaming. As withany other skill, do not be discouraged if it takes a littletime to become proficient. The first lucid dream is themost difficult one, and so if you do get the gift of anearly lucid dream experience, or if you have had a spon-taneous one in the recent past, you are already over thefirst hurdle. But even if this is not the case, if you dili-gently practice your chosen methods from those pre-sented in this chapter, you will learn to achieve lucidityin your dreams.

The Nature of Lucid DreamsAlthough lucidity is usually accessed through normaldreaming, do not confuse lucid dreams themselves with

vivid dreams. They are a state of altered consciousnessin their own right, distinct from even the most vivid ofnormal dreams. There are, nevertheless, varying degreesof lucidity, ranging from a fleeting flash of consciousawareness within an otherwise ordinary dream to “high”lucid dreams of apparent total realism containingastounding detail. There is a whole set of gradations inbetween. Lucidity is directly proportional to the clarityof your awareness within a dream: the more fully con-scious and aware you become within a dream, so will thedream scenery take on greater richness, reality and depthaccordingly. Alan Worsley has noted that the level oflucidity can vary even in the same dream. At its best, lucid dreaming creates a verisimilitude of physical, wakingreality—and sometimes even more intense than that.

You have to find ways to alert yourself within a nor-mal dream that you are dreaming, but the level of con-sciousness that has to be achieved requires a fine bal-ancing act between falling back into unaware dreaming,or waking up from sleep altogether. It is virtually a form

of yoga that can only be learned through trialand error. Emotional control, even a measure ofdetachment, is necessary to maintain a luciddream experience for any length of time. If youbecome too excited, you wake up; if tooabsorbed in the content of the lucid dream, thereis a risk of slipping back into ordinary, non-aware dreaming. “Like crossing a narrow board, you must keep your balance to avoid falling oneway or the other,” Garfield advises.

Lucid dreaming can be accessed in anyREM period in a sleep cycle, but the very besttime is in the longer and more energetic REMperiods occurring an hour or two before younormally awake. Keith Hearne states flatly thatlucid dreams are essentially “a phenomenon ofthe second half of the night.” But lucid dream-ing can also be accessed in the midst of hypno-gogic imagery at the onset of sleep, as we shall see later. At the other end of the sleep cycle, awakening, there areother opportunities to gain dream lucidity, as we shallalso learn.

There is no problem in remembering lucid dreams—you can recall them just as well as you rememberevents in waking life. This is because the conscious selfis involved both in waking awareness and in luciddreaming. Nevertheless, we advise that you keep a writ-ten record of your lucid dreams just as you do of yournormal dreams.

The perceptual quality of lucid dreams is notewor-thy. In the way that we can distinguish subtle differencesbetween, say, a photographic print and a newspaper pho-tograph, so too does a lucid dream have a specific visu-al texture. There is usually a prevailing clarity of lightand a translucency to colours almost as if they were illu-minated from within. Lucid dream lighting tends to havethat sort of crystalline purity one might get a hint of ona crisp, clear sunlit winter morning, with ice crystals

glinting sharply and the white snow and frost vividlycontrasting with a flawless azure sky. In one dream,Patricia Garfield felt that light emanated from inside herown eyes, and it is true that the lucid dreamer can oftenbe particularly aware of the dream-body’s eyes. KeithHearne, for instance, noted tightness around the “eyes”with which he gazed on a lucid dream scene, and wewould say that it feels rather akin to putting on a pair ofeyeglasses that are not quite the right prescription—there is a very mild sense of optical strain. This seems tobe related to the nature of lucid dream consciousness inthat to maintain the necessary level of lucidity a way of“seeing” within the dream needs to be evolved.

Virtual versions of all sensory modalities can oper-ate in lucid dreams, though not necessarily all togetherin a single dream. Although the visual sense usually pre-dominates, smell, taste, touch and hearing are all able tomake their appearances in the lucid dream state. In a fewrare cases, it is possible to have one or more of these sen-sory modes as the dominant ones.

In even in the most realistic lucid dream, however, words on a page tend to be elusive. The dreamer mightbe able to read a page of writing quite readily, but whenthe book is looked at again the words will have changedin some way. A similar effect is noticeable on digitalclocks seen in lucid dreams.

Then there is the issue of how dreamers image them-selves in lucid dreams. In reality, there is no need to havea body at all in the lucid state. One could simply be whatthe German lucid dream researcher, Paul Tholey, calledan “ego-point” just floating around or entering intodream characters at will. But we are so used to carryingan image of ourselves in waking life that the habit usu-ally persists into the lucid dream state.

Page 26: EARTH STA R - xn--sergiomagaa-beb.comsergiomagaña.com/imgs/EarthStarAug2012.pdf · Ilie Cioara • Charla Devereux • Paul Devereux Sharon Fisher • Deanne Sihr-Fry Zen Gardner

But because it is an image, it can be changed anddistorted. Garfield has reported that she has appeared invarious guises in her lucid dreams, including as a manand as a half-animal, half-human figure. J.H. Whiteman,a South African researcher, found himself as a girl in onelucid dream, and remarked on the detailed difference ofbodily sensibility he experienced. Alan Worsley has con-ducted some particularly bizarre experiments. On anumber of occasions he has passed his dream-body’sforearms through each other, experiencing a “dragging”sensation. On another occasion, he was able to sink hisdream-body’s hands into his dream head, inside ofwhich he felt the tissue of a brain.

A Lucid Dreaming SupermarketWe have given each of the lucid dream induction “pack-ages” described below a “brand name”. Look at all thesepackages as if you were browsing along a supermarketshelf. Pick out those that have an initial appeal for you,and leave the others until another visit if necessary.

The Days of our LivesIt has been noticed by several researchers that busy daysin which you meet a lot of people, do considerable trav-elling or are involved in numerous activities, seem toprovide nights particularly susceptible to lucid dream-ing. In her Pathways to Ecstasy, Patricia Garfield notesthat after such days “I might also be tired, anxious, exhausted, sick or feeling fine, but I am usually stimu-lated with many activities, ideas, and people.”

Life is But a DreamOne can begin preparation for theplanned night of lucidity during theday, and every day. Whatever youare doing, ask yourself: “Am Iawake or asleep? Is this reality, or isit a dream?” In other words, developa habit of testing your state of con-sciousness until it becomes an auto-matic reflex. It can then carry overinto your dream life, and conse-quently provide a critical cue forlucidity. Paul Tholey suggested thatthe question should be asked at leastfive to ten times a day. You can alsoprogramme yourself to ask the ques-tion at set times of the day, such aswhen coming home from work, orby setting a wristwatch alarm. Youmight even write a cue card that says

“Is this a dream?” and put it in your wallet, pocket, onyour desk at work and so forth, where it will give youoccasional, unexpected reminders to test your state ofconsciousness.

This method originates in Tibetan dream yoga, where the novice is instructed to think continuously that“all things are of the substance of dreams”. It is a pow-erful technique. As Stephen LaBerge has remarked, howcan you expect to ask yourself if a dream is a dreamwhen you are in one, if you never question your mentalstate in waking life?

A-scent Into LucidityAll the lucid dream incubation methods use memory asthe main ingredient in one way or another, whether it isto form a habitual action, employ visualisation, or to tryto carry an intention over into the sleeping state, as withnormal dream incubation. A powerful adjunct to thisprocess can be the use of scent. We have all had theexperience of smelling an odour that immediately con-jures an image of something from earlier in our lives. The olfactory sense connects to the limbic system, where the hippocampus interprets smells and helps formmemories, and where the amygdala is thought to play arole in emotions. Smell is therefore a highly suitablesense to use as a mnemonic aid. And scent can reach intodreams. This was shown by Saint-Denys. He constantlyused a certain perfume while he was visiting a particularholiday location for two weeks. He used it only at thisplace. Some months later, the perfume was applied to hispillow during the night. Sure enough, it induced a dreamof the vacation spot. In more recent experimentation,Alan Worsley found that odours influenced the contentof his lucid dreams, and that differentiation of scentswas possible in the lucid dream state. There were someanecdotal reports in the 1980s that scent had been usedfor cueing subjects for lucid dreaming while they werein the REM state, and there is ongoing research into theeffects of fragrances on sleep in general.

The power of scent is associative. That being so, youcan select a fragrance specifically to accompany a cho-sen induction method. For example, when asking your-self if you are dreaming in the day, sniff the selected fra-grance from a bottle of essential oil or perfume at thesame time. Or, burn a particular incense when you doyour bedtime incubation (this would be best as an essen-tial oil, as that can be both vaporised as an incense andsprinkled on the pillow as a fragrance). The scent can act

like a “carrier wave”, reminding you in your dreams ofthe induction or critical awareness you have been work-ing on to trigger you into lucidity. It is of course impor-tant that the scent used has no other associations for you,and that you ensure no other smell is involved when youdo your incubation.

Oiling the Dream Machine Essential oils can be used in other ways than solely forscent. Some have specific sedative and hypnotic charac-teristics, as noted earlier with regard to Clary Sage. Youmight also experiment with classic sleep and dream pro-ducers such as lavender, rose, myrrh, and patchouli. Youmight mix your own dreaming blends (and some areavailable commercially). One is frankincense withmyrrh and sandalwood, or another suggestion would be

a mix of equal parts of Clary Sage, roseotto, jasmine and vanilla. Also, the essen-tial oil of nutmeg is available, and thiscan be inhaled by sprinkling a few dropson the pillow or bedclothes. (As advisedpreviously, if you apply oils directly tothe skin, make sure they are suspended ina “carrier oil” such as grapeseed, almondor jojoba. Only one or two drops ofessential oil per tablespoon of carrier oilare necessary, and the mixture should bestirred or shaken before use to ensure thatthe essential oil is dispersed in the carri-er. Do not ingest the oils. Essential oilsused for these purposes should be unadul-terated and of therapy standard.)

The Power of PlaceMemory and place are curiously linked. This was recog-nised in the classical world by a system called “themethod of loci” (‘method of places’). In this memoris-ing technique, a person commits to memory the visu-alised layout of a building, or any geographic locationthat provides a suitable number of separate spots, likerooms, or houses and shops down a street, or evenislands in a bay. If the person wants to remember a listof items, he or she “walks” in their mind through thevisualised locale, and mentally assigns each item on thelist to a separate spot within the imagined scene. Eachitem becomes visually linked in the imagination with thevisualised spot. When the time comes to retrieve the listof items, the person simply “walks” back through thememorised locale “seeing” the items that had been“deposited” earlier in their various places. It is a provenmethod for recalling information that is otherwise diffi-cult to retain in one’s mind. We can use this mnemonicpower of place in our quest for lucid dream induction.

Think of a place you frequent most days. A goodchoice would be the kitchen in your home. This is forthree reasons: you visit the place a lot, it is convenient, and in a study of a hundred lucid dreams Keith Hearnefound that familiar locations like the kitchen figured byfar the most often as interior settings in lucid dreams.Actually, there is a fourth reason — you are likely tohave a fridge in the kitchen. So write boldly in felt tip ona slip of paper or card “LUCID IN THE SKY WITHDIAMONDS”, and fix it to the refrigerator door with a

few of those little fridge magnets.Day in, day out, as you pass throughthe kitchen or busy yourself there, catch sight of the note on the fridge, and think of (or hum, whistle or sing)the tune of the Beatles’ song, “Lucy inthe Sky with Diamonds”. Prime yourdreaming mind by incorporating intoyour incubation procedures an intentto visit the kitchen in your dreamsand of becoming lucid when you doso. It will be only a matter of timeuntil either the kitchen figures in yourdreams, or some associated image—jewellery, frozen wastelands, glitter-ing ice crystals in the sky, the Beatles, the tune - does so. Then, unless youhave a particularly stubborn dreamingmind, you will be triggered intolucidity.

All ChangeA lucid dream can sometimes be triggered simply bychanging your sleeping arrangements. So try a shiftfrom a mattress to a water bed, or go to sleep on thefloor or a sofa for a night. Make it part of a specialinduction procedure. If you are really keen and adven-turous, you might even arrange a fairly uncomfortablesleeping situation, so you will tend to wake quite fre-quently during the night.

Take a Deep BreathLittle modern research has been done on breathing withregard to lucid dreaming. In Tibetan dream yoga, “pot-

shaped” breathing is recommended. In this, you expelthe used air in the lungs using three exhalations, theninhale taking the air into the bottom of the lungs whileraising the diaphragm slightly, making the distendedchest and abdomen rounded and similar to the shape ofan earthenware pot, and holding as long as possible. This is repeated seven times. Another type of breathingthat can cause mind states similar to lucid dreaming ishyperventilation, rapid shallow breathing, which psy-chologist Stanislav Grof has incorporated into his “psy-chotropic” breathwork technique. However, this form ofbreathing can be dangerous, leading all too easily toblackouts, and should not be undertaken without expertsupervision.

Take Your PositionsAs far as posture goes, lucid dreamer extraordinaire,Alan Worsley, reckons he lucid dreams best when hesleeps in a facedown position with his forearms underhis chest and fists to his cheeks. This sounds uncomfort-able, and Worsley admits that the position sometimesmakes his arms go numb, but is very effective for him. When not sleeping specifically to have lucid dreams, helies on his side. Because research in this area is as sparseas in breathing techniques, you will have to experiment.Try out various sleeping postures, and when you achievelucidity, make a note of the sleeping position you hadadopted.

Dream with a PlanWhen you incubate a dream, plan to do something spe-cific in it, and tell yourself that this will trigger lucidity

for you. Garfield suggests flying, as that in itself oftenleads automatically to lucidity in a dream. As part of theinduction procedure, spend some time observing birds inflight, read about birds, aircraft, levitating yogis—any-thing that carries the message. Tholey recommendedplanning to carry out a simple action in a dream, such asslowly waving an arm or looking at your hands.

Electric DreamsToday’s researchers have sought to invent electronicways of inducing lucid dreaming and associated mentalstates. There have been some successes, but nopanaceas. Even if you use an electronic aid, it will notautomatically confer lucidity in your dreams, and youwill need to work with it as you would with any othermethod. A disadvantage is that electronic aids are ofcourse more expensive than using psychological induc-tion methods. For some people, though, the use of aninstrument may appeal.

One of the most widely-used devices is theNovaDreamer, developed by Laberge’s LucidityInstitute in California (http://www.lucidity.com). Thisingenious instrument consists of a lightweight, paddedeye mask fitted with a tiny computerised electronic cir-cuit and red LEDs in the eye positions. Infrared sensorsdetect the rapid eye movements indicative of REMsleep, and this sets o? a programmable selection of lightand sound cues which can enter the wearer’s dreams, hopefully triggering lucidity.

Keith Hearne has used monitored breathing as abasis for a possible lucid dream device. Sessions withprototypes did apparently prove successful.

Shannon Novak, a New Zealand-born fineartist, commissioned CymaScope to image12 piano notes as inspiration for a series of12 musical canvases. We decided to imagethe notes in video mode because when we

observed the ‘A1’ note we discovered, surprisingly, thatthe energy envelope changes over time as the string’sharmonics mix in the piano’s wooden bridge. Instead ofthe envelope being fairly stable, as we had imagined, theharmonics actually cause the CymaGlyphs to be won-derfully dynamic. Our ears can easily detect the changesin the harmonics and the CymaScope now revealsthem—probably a first in acoustic physics. Capturingthe dynamics was only possible with HD video but tam-ing the dynamics of the piano’s first strike, followed bythe short plateau and long decay phase, was tricky. Weachieved the result with the help of a professional audiocompressor operating in real time.

Shannon was delighted with the results. He com-mented: “I have always been fascinated with the trans-lation of that which is invisible, into something visiblethat individuals can relate to, in particular, the repre-sentation of sound through colour and geometric form. Isaw the use of cymatic technology as one method of suchrepresentation and a unique and compelling way of edu-cating individuals about the link between sound, colour, and geometric form”.

For the first time in history individual piano notes havebeen made visible using the CymaScope instrument. The piano notes were painstakingly recorded by EvyKing and then fed into the CymaScope one by one andthe results recorded in high definition video.

Music, in the absolute sense, is the invisible geome-try of the cosmos, a delicate tracery of frequencies thatharmonise with each other and from which all mattermanifests.

The conductor of this sublime symphony is theCreative Force of the cosmos, some people prefer tosay: God.

Music, as sensed by humans, is a delicate tracery ofaudible frequencies that harmonise with each other andgenerally please our emotions.

What is not commonly known is that music has thealmost magical power to create form from formless-ness. If the reader doubts this, click the arrow below toview water under the influence of music, revealing theinvisible geometry of music.

Music Made Visible is a new concept in musicalexpression, a stream of cymatic images representing ananalog of music in visual form. If our eyes could seemusic we would not see waves, as is commonlybelieved, but beautiful holographic bubbles, with shim-mering kaleidoscopic patterns on their surface. TheCymaScope allows us to see this previously hiddenrealm of beauty.

Almost all audible sounds are bubble-like in nature, not wave-like as is commonly believed.

If our eyes could see music they would be bathed inscintillating kaleidoscope-like patterns.

The Cymascope is an instrument that makes soundor music visible, creating detailed 3D impressions ofsound or music vibrations. Here the rapidly expandingsphere is captured in a frozen moment. The interiorreveals a beautiful and complex structure representingthe rich harmonic nature of violin music.

Music made visible images can be thought of asanalogs of music because the geometry they contain is amathematical correlate of the musical pitches and inter-vals that caused the pattern to form on the Cymascopemembrane.

MMV technology is still under development but anexcerpt from Pink Floyd’s “Welcome to the Machine”(accessible from the link below) shows that an excitingfuture lies ahead when all music can be transcribed toMusicMadeVisible.

3 2 EARTH STAR AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2012 www.earthstarmag.com

It has been a life time journey coming from astate of lack of confidence, self doubt, insecu-rities; going from feeling “selfless” to feelinglike a “selfish” person; a process of acquain-tance with my genuine self. An excavation

which finally has allowed me to know and expose who IAM and what I want from life. I have learned valuablelife lessons through which I have gained experientialwisdom. Understanding theories, philosophies, readingand listening to self help resources, learning healingtechniques, grasping unfamiliar ideas and finally adopt-ing metaphysical concepts and practices have served mealong my journey of developing Self Love. AND, moreimportantly, witnessing these concepts as they playedout in my own life has given me great insight and secu-rity to trust and believe in myself. All the while the oneand only thing I have always known is that nothing ismore important than LOVE!

Love explains why I have been such a giving, com-passionate, empathic, person, but it didn’t explain why Iwas extremely sensitive. I seemed to want to help needypeople and felt sorry for those who appeared to be lessfortunate than myself. What I didn’t realize was that I

was the needy one who felt sorry for myself and myouter world was actually a reflection of that. I neverthought self pity related to me. After all I felt very for-tunate to be blessed with financial stability; always hadfood and shelter AND love from others. What could Ipossibly be feeling sorry for myself about? The missingpart was I felt left out.

A few years ago just prior to life coaching training,my life story’s theme became very evident as: “Whatabout me?” Why did it seem that I didn’t feel veryimportant; felt like I was last on others’ priority list likebeing kept on the back burner just waiting to be invitedto join in, to be heard etc. Previously, I was aware thatI identified with the middle child syndrome. However, Ithought I was long over that. I knew I needed validationfrom others and when I didn’t get the attention I neededI suffered. Heck, I knew when I didn’t get the time andattention I needed, I ended relationships {as evidencedby my two divorces}. Those were deal breakers for me.What I wasn’t aware of was that it was my job to vali-date myself. Finally, years later the light bulb went on;so that is what my psychology professor meant by inter-nal vs. external validation! Amazing how a concept can

be understood in theory, but not thoroughly untilapplied! Perhaps, it was more about denial and avoid-ance in order to protect myself from my shadow.

I believe even jealously is a form of self pity.Jealously stems from lack of feeling secure, secure inwho one is, failing to accept oneself as being goodenough. Confidence and self esteem are all cousins ofthis issue. So why would a woman who is insecure everallow herself to magnetize and become involved with aman who thrives off attracting other women? Could itbe because “God works in mysterious ways” andbecause the unconscious or subconscious attracts whatmay be needed for soul evolution? That seems to havebeen the case for me as the final part of my validationlesson came via a relationship in which my partner val-idated me to the extreme, as he did for many otherwomen too.

In 2007, I experienced a major life crisis when heup and left without disclosing any plans of doing so,while I was on a double shift at work. Once the shockand grief took its toll, I became forever grateful for thatrelationship because it was the beginning of my awak-ening of Self Love.

It taught me that I am responsible for loving me andif someone else loves me that is a beautiful blessing. Ittaught me that I come first in my life because it is mylife. It taught me that for practical purposes I had beenliving my life as a People Pleaser; afraid to express myneeds; how I felt for fear of being unlovable, until a rela-tionship was at its end, which is why nearly all my timeand energy was devoted to others and their needs. Mostof all it taught me that once there is an awareness, acknowledgment, and acceptance, self pity {or any othernumber of issues} can be transformed into Self Love. That alone time for the first time in my life was a giftrather than a childhood associated punishment of beingsent to my room as discipline. The awakening didn’thappen over night. It involved baby steps challengingmyself to do things my way on my time schedule as anindependent adult. Furthermore, it involved; discardingworry, disposing old thought/belief patterns, workingon forgiveness of self and others, processing guilt andgrief, and developing Spiritual beliefs based on trusting“thy will be done”. Meanwhile, all the sadness and hurtof the relational breakup got channeled into quality metime and energy devoted to myself. The experience waswell worth it. The greatest benefits have been; freedomfrom fear of not being good enough, knowing that deci-sions are my choices not someones “shoulds”, andestablished personal power from created boundaries; allblooming into personal peace. The life lessons continueas I most recently learned that what others think of me

is not my business! Wow, that was difficult to compre-hend at first!

If this world is ever going to experience Peace eachindividual must first establish peace in their own life. Ibelieve this requires preventing unnecessary hurt fromconception through the growing years and healing adultsthrough out the golden years. Parents, caretakers, familymembers, educators etc. must strive to validate childrenso that they know they are heard, seen and understood. If this is not how it was for you then you must takeresponsibility for being number one. It begins withemotional honesty from within and expands throughkind communication with ourselves extending outwardto others. Open and honest communication is the key topersonal freedom! No more “little girls should be seenand not heard” for me because my child within is nowcomforted with a blanket of Self Love. She no longerneeds to fear conflict, arguments, nor feelings of notbeing good enough for which attempts at perfectionnearly depleted all her energy.

By the way, if you identify with any People Pleasingtraits beware that you are a perfect fit for being a co-dependent. Awareness of this could be preventative inbecoming involved in an unfulfilled relationship.

For years writing poetry has been my way of deal-ing with my emotions and healing. Ironically, I wrote“If You Leave Me” for my former husband and it was Iwho left him for the other man who validated me. Atthe time I wrote it I thought “what would I do withoutmy husband, how would I survive if he ever left me?”Back then I thought it was so beautiful to love someoneso much, now I see it as being needy because of a lackof Self Love.

If you have ever experienced a break up, which“broke your heart” you may identify with the followingpoem. Yes, loss can feel devastating and if you haveSelf Love you will always have you. You will be able tolove again for that which is within reflects outward andcreates personal reality. Love and honor yourself as ifyou were the perfect love you seek, because YOU arethat which you are looking for! Be genuine, be authen-tic, have integrity without apologizing for being YOU!YOU were perfectly, Divinely created with your owngifts and talents. Discover them and you shall discoverSelf Love!

I am blessed by my life lessons! The so called “badthings”, the experiences that provided me the opportuni-ty for my soul to evolve. My ability and willingness tocreate a more abundant life rather than to be held in vic-tim hood started with the foundational perspective Iadopted from my Grandmother; everything happens fora reason and things turn out for the best. In other words,

FAITH ! Believing in this has gotten me though a num-ber of difficult times without resentment or bitterness. Itis the truest form of TRUST based on Grace!

I know what it is like to be in emotional pain ANDI know suffering is attachment to pain. Process the pain, feel it,release it, so you can deal with what is rather thanwhat is no longer. Understand choices and possibilitiesare necessary to move forward. This requires what I callthe “A”s of healing; Awareness, Acknowledgment,Acceptance, Appreciation, Attitude, Anticipation,Accomplishment, and Awakening in order to actuallytransform your life rather than just be temporarilyinspired or motivated to do so.

Recently, my own Akashic Record readingconfirmed I am a healer and teacher. I am following mypassion utilizing my gifts and talents by empoweringothers with relational, grief, and Spiritual coaching.Clearly, it’s true:

“We cannot hold a torch to light another’s path with-out brightening our own.” {Ben Sweetland}. Hence, Ifeel it is time to let my light shine, the brightness of SelfLove to perhaps show you the way.

AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2012 EARTH STAR 3 5www.earthstarmag.com

If your child were diagnosed with a very seri-ous, very rare form of brain cancer, what wouldyou do? Where would you turn?

This is the situation that Rick Schiff, a policesergeant with the San Francisco Police Department, andhis family were faced with back in 1994.

His four year old daughter, an identical twin, had abrain tumor growing in the left ventricle of her brainwhich was causing sudden neurological side effects. The prognosis of this particular tumor was that it wouldspread rapidly and kill her within weeks.

So they did what most people would consider thelogical next step—they consulted with an oncologist andproceeded with the recommended treatment, which, as isoften the case, included a toxic combination ofchemotherapy, radiation and surgery, not so much as acure but rather to extend her life for as long as possible.

The rest of Rick’s heart-breaking story unfortunatelyhas a tragic ending, and might have been prevented ifnatural cancer treatments were more widely availableand recognized in the United States.

First, Conventional Cancer TreatmentPoisons Child

Like most well-meaning parents, Rick and his wifedecided to follow through with the oncologists’ recom-mended treatment protocol. First came surgery, whichhad an initial positive outcome but because of the sever-ity of the cancer, its spread was imminent. As Rick said:

“ … literally in a matter of weeks we would be rightback to where we were. In the end, [doctors] convincedus that what we would do is an aggressive regimen ofchemotherapy and radiation simultaneously … We pro-gressed through their treatment. She started the treat-ment on her fourth birthday. After six months, we hadfinished all the chemo and radiation that you could pos-sibly have given her.”

She ended up living longer than the few weeks firstexpected, but the cancer came back within six months.Rick continued:

“Her hair was burnt so badly that it never grewback. She literally, for want of a better description, looked like Golum in The Hobbit. She was a friedwretched little child, emaciated, unable to process nutrients,

had shingles, had suffered immeasurably. We had rubbergloves to change her diaper because her urine was sotoxic from the chemotherapy. The problem is I get sixmonths through this and then I stop and I said, “Okay, what do we do now?” They said, “She dies.””

It was at that point that Rick realized he had made“a terrible mistake.”

“I was now exactly where I was six months ago, mydaughter was suffering. She had now suffered immea-surably at the hands of not only the doctors but myselfand for what?” he said.

Then, Rick came across another option he hadn’tbeen aware of before. In a book given to him by friendsmonths earlier, a chapter about Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski, who employs novel gene-targeted therapies in the treat-ment of cancer, picqued his interest. He spoke to Dr.Burzynski directly, and then to several of his patients.

“Oddly enough, each of them said Dr. Burzynskiwas great. The treatment is working fantastically. This isin stark contrast to what our own oncologist had told us.They all told us not to go but we went anyway.”

Cancer Disappears Using Dr. Burzynski’s“Forbidden”Treatment

Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski is known for developing agene-specific treatment using a combination of cancer-fighting peptides he developed called antineoplastons totarget specific cancers, conventional cancer drugs, andnatural complementary strategies, including customizeddiets and exercise.

I interviewed Dr. Burzynski about his cancer treat-ment and also reviewed his recently released documen-tary, Burzynski, The Movie. It’s an absolute jaw-dropper,as not only did the U.S. federal government spend four-teen years actively suppressing a cancer treatment thathad a FAR greater success rate than any other treatmentavailable, they also spent well over $60 million of U.S.taxpayer dollars trying to put Dr. Burzynski in jail in

order to steal his patents and either suppress or cash inon his discovery.

The treatment has surpassed all other conventionalcancer treatments on the market, but you can’t just walkin and receive it. Due to regulatory red tape, you’re only“allowed” to see Dr. Burzynski if you’ve already hadchemotherapy and radiation and failed to recover. Eventhen it is often a struggle

In a similar case involving Thomas, the son of JimNavarro, who was also diagnosed with a form of braincancer (and ended up dying from respiratory failure dueto chronic toxicity of chemotherapy), it took 18 monthsof legal wrangling with the U.S. Food and DrugAdministration (FDA) to get Thomas approved for treat-ment by Dr. Burzynski. By then he had already receivedhis second brain surgery, had already been forced toundergo chemotherapy, and had already suffered recur-ring tumors—likely induced by the chemotherapy itself. After all that, he finally fulfilled all the requirements tobe allowed to try Dr. Burzynski’s treatment, whichresulted in a thirty-three percent reduction in tumors. AsNavarro said:

“A father’s hope is, had he not been polluted andpoisoned with chemotherapy, had we not been stopped, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that he would bealive today.”

Unfortunately, the case involving Rick’s daughter,Chrissie, had a similar outcome.

Chrissie Died, Cancer-Free, From theEffects of Chemotherapy and Radiation

Like Jim’s son, Chrissie showed remarkable improve-ment following Dr. Burzynski’s treatment:

“Within a number of months, the enhancement inthe actual tumor had dissipated … My daughter got bet-ter and better and better … The tumor slowly driftedaway. As it drifted away over the period of the next yearthough, her other side effects became more and more

Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski

prominent. Those were from the chemo and radiation.Even the doctors admitted that she began to have visionproblems, hearing problems. Again, was malnourishedbased on her inability to process food.

At the same time, as she progressed and got better, the neurosurgeons who followed the surgery and soforth, they seemed very curious and optimistic but theoncologist got further and more distant from us andmore inexplicably just plain rude, just unpleasant. Atone point, the oncologist refused to see us althoughthere was no real explanation for that. The head of pedi-atrics had to send in a general physician to take over fortheir practice because the oncologists were unwilling todeal with us and again, inexplicably. You would thinkthat my daughter’s progression towards a cure was amiracle.”

Chrissie had gone nearly a year cancer-free, but herbody was too weakened from the conventional cancertreatments to survive and she passed away.

“ … we brought Chrissie back and they did anautopsy. The autopsy showed that she died absolutelycancer-free with no sign of cancer and both the oncolo-gist and the radio oncologist were there. We were look-ing through optics, slides of my daughter’s brain. Theyall confirmed that the damage that they saw was a resultof the chemotherapy and radiation. So we know that shedied cancer free. The only child of that diagnosis that’sever been cancer free and we know what killed her.”

Do Oncologists Really Know How to Treat Cancer?

Most conventional cancer treatments tend to add insultto injury by doing more harm than good—a fact that hasbeen largely swept under the rug by the medical indus-try. The real culprits—the underlying causes—are com-pletely ignored, and that is, I believe, the root of theproblem. The cancer industry has become a massive for-

profit business that is doing everything in its power tomaintain the status quo. It is, quite simply, not interest-ed in truly reducing cancer rates; it’s interested in treat-ing cancer.

From that perspective, the more cancer cases thebetter... Even many oncologists, whom most regard asthe go-to specialist upon receiving a cancer diagnosis, may be better described as chemotherapy specialiststhan cancer specialists.

As Rick continues:“One of the great fallacies of modern medicine is

that an oncologist knows anything about cancer becausethat’s not what they are. An oncologist is generallyspeaking a hematologist. But what an oncologist is is atoxic chemotherapist. They understand toxic chemother-apy. Do they understand cancer? … What do they under-stand about the causes of cancer?

I went to UCSF under the belief that I was going totalk to a cancer specialist and that’s not what I got. What I got was a specialist in surgery who did a mag-nificent job at what he was supposed to do – a special-ist in oncology who did only what they knew, not whatwas in the best interest of my child, and a radio oncolo-gist who not only lied to us and did nothing to benefit mydaughter but ultimately specifically killed my daughter.

He gave my daughter a lethal dosage of radiation. There was no child that was going to survive 6000 radsof whole brain radiation particularly in simultaneousconjunction with chemotherapy. From his perspective, the child was going to die and I would never know thelong term effects.

So you’re going to go look at this [alternative treat-ment] website and you’re going to see

this treatment and you’re going to come back andyou’re going to talk to somebody who knows absolutelynothing about it but who has a financial vested interestin your receiving their treatments. I think the combina-tion of those two really keeps the number of patients thatgo to Dr. Burzynski down or the number of patients thatenroll in any clinical trial that aren’t advocated for bythese oncologists.”

What Can You do to Help Protect YourFreedom of Choice in Health Treatments?

Dr. Burzynski is just one of the alternative cancer spe-cialists out there. There are many others as well, such asthe Gerson Therapy and Dr. Nick Gonzalez’s nutritionalapproach—or even medical marijuana. Unfortunately, the system, as currently configured, is stacked againstyou receiving these potentially life-saving therapies (andothers like them).

Rick states:“I think what’s most frustrating about being me is

that my daughter died in 1996 at the age of 6-1/2 with anidentical twin sister who will never be the same, who istraumatically affected; with brothers and sisters, motherand father who will never be the same, with people whoworked very hard to try and save her, whose lives wereaffected and for what?

Using Dr. Burzynski again as an example, it’s now… 2012 and what have I accomplished? There are stillparents who have children who should be going to, as anexample, Dr. Burzynski. That should be the very firstmodality, the non-toxic, most effective treatment. He hasFDA clinical trials for brainstem glioma that aregreater, have shown better results than all clinical stud-ies for brainstem glioma put together anywhere in theworld. And yet, a parent can’t just pick up the phone orfly on an airplane to Houston and get the treatment.

They have to cross hurdles and as they cross thosehurdles, they get more and more dissuaded from goingforward and eventually as you pointed out in manycases, they just got simply told no. I’m sorry. The gov-ernment won’t allow you to have this curative agent.”Deaths like that of Rick’s daughter are shocking in thatthey aren’t necessary. If the FDA and the oncologists

had simply given them the opportunity toexercise freedom of choice to seek whatev-er therapy they thought appropriate, shemay still be alive.

So, what can you do to address this kindof medical injustice and stop it from hap-pening to you or someone you love? Firstoff, Rick suggests if you’re looking toreceive an unapproved treatment, contactyour local politicians:

“First of, my experience started when Ichose to go to Dr. Burzynski’s there was nolawful method for which I could get thetreatment for my daughter in the State ofCalifornia. So I went to my congresswomanNancy Pelosi and I went to my senatorDianne Feinstein and the two of them pulled

together and got me what was called a compassionateIND (Investigational New Drug) use permit, whichallowed me to be the only lawful person bringing thisinto the State of California at the time.”

Knowledge is always one of the highest forms ofpower, so I also recommend you share this informationwith your friends and loved ones. The film, Cut PoisonBurn, which documents the Navarro’s story, is an easyand powerful way to do so, and is being sold on a ‘value-priced’ basis to help the Navarro’s pay off Thomas’ med-ical bills, meaning you can download a copy of the filmfor $1.99 and up, depending on how much you’re will-ing to pay. You can also purchase a DVD copy for $9.99at http://cutpoisonburn.com/

A percentage of the proceeds from the film will goto cancer organizations that donate 1one hundred per-cent of their proceeds to families fighting cancer—notthe American Cancer Society. I’m also making the DVDavailable on my site. Of these proceeds, eighty percentwill go to the producers and Jim Navarro’s family. As a cardiologist for over a quarter century,I dealt with life and death circumstanceson a daily basis. I came to fully appreci-ate how precious and tenuous life canbe; it can change in an instant. On June

30th of 2009 such a dramatic shift occurred in our fam-ily when our son, Tyler, was involved in an automobileaccident sustaining a severe spinal cord injury that lefthim paralyzed.

As John Lennon once said, “Life is what happens toyou while you’re busy making other plans.” In a Nano-second, our entire family was thrust into the midst ofone of the fiercest storms imaginable.

Why do disruptive, terrible things like this happen? Why must there be such anguish? Does it serve any pur-pose?” These were questions that had answers . . . but itwould take quite some time for me to sift through thequagmire in order to uncover them.

There were three things that helped me navigate thestorm:

Journaling became the vehicle of my delivery fromthe abyss. After the accident occurred I initially found itextremely difficult to talk about. I needed the time inorder to allow the experience to be absorbed into thedeepest recesses of my soul, where it would be ponderedover and over again. It would be in that silent space thatI began my search for meaning. Journaling allowed meto distill my ideas down to the most elemental level, thento expand on them, exploring places deep within that Ihad never before recognized. It provided me withincredible clarity in the midst of the chaos I was experi-encing.

Yielding to a higher power offered me the strengthto endure the ravaging storm. Letting go of my falseegoic belief that I must handle this alone enabled me tofind an unfathomable peace within the quagmire.Ultimately I came to see, to truly visualize the beautythat hid within the belly of the beast. On this paththrough hell, my mantra became: “I can’t but we can!”

Changing the thought made all the difference. AsDr. Wayne Dyer says: “When you change the way youlook at things, the things you look at change.” I came tounderstand that that everything is in perfect order . . .even this! It’s all in one’s perspective. Even in the midstof such profound sadness, I found that if I allowedmyself to look around, I could focus instead on the beau-ty before my eyes; it was there right alongside the suf-fering. There must be this maintenance of equilibrium inour lives, a balance that is manifested in the apparentdualities of life. After all, the monsoon is countered by acalm, sunny day; perfect health is balanced by life-threatening disease or injury, good by evil, and darknessby illumination. These perceived opposites are in truthconjoined with one another.

What I ultimately came to appreciated was that thishuman realm represents a perfect circumstance in which

one can approach what we all seek—transformativeenlightenment. I have learned that all the pain and tur-moil of this existence, those things that cause us to suf-fer, are beautifully balanced and coupled with thosethings that bring us pleasure. It is because of that symbi-otic relationship that we do not become overly burdenedwith the negative aspects of any experience.

Through this heart wrenching experience, I havelearned that when adversity comes our way, it is how werespond to that difficulty that determines who webecome. Our life experiences become calamities only ifwe make the conscious decision to make tragedies out ofthem. Rather than lamenting the so-called hardships inour lives, we can choose to be grateful for them. We canembrace them and accept them as gifts from the Divine. While they may not come in beautiful wrapping paper, these “gifts” provide fertile soil for our growth andenlightenment. They can actually be a blessing indisguise.

An expression from the Kabbalah says it all: “Thefalls of our life provide us with the energy to propel our-selves to a much higher level.” We should be gratefulfor the falls of our life.

Over the years I’ve written a lot about theliver and liver detoxification. I waslistening to a well-known “RadioDoctor” the other day, an he was tryingto debunk the “myth” of liver detox,

stating that it didn’t really do anything and that there isnothing to detox.

But for anyone who has ever done a liver detox, I”msure you’d agree with how much better you felt after-wards. I’ve also seen blood test improvements in choles-terol, triglycerides and liver enzymes when comparing

to before the detox process. Here are a few valuable hints distilled from my

years of practice for those of you who would like to trya liver dotox.

First of all, it’s generally and traditionally thoughtthat the best times to do a liver cleanse or detox are inthe fall and spring. The winter months are thought to bea time to build the system up and provide the necessaryfire for the colder season. However, if you live in statessuch as Florida or California, where the weather is mod-erate all year round, it won’t hurt for you to do a rathermild liver cleanse any time of year. Use your intuition, but don’t go overboard. It’s all a matter of degree. (Ifyou live in the colder climates, please be careful in anydetoxification, because the body needs “fuel” during thecolder months, in order to function well.)

The best way to detox the liver is through diet.

Avoid the following foods:

• greasy, fatty or deep-fried foods• diary products made from cow’s milk• sugar and sweetened foods• refined carbohydrates such as white flour products• sweets of any type

• the less gluten the better• eliminate or restrict cold or frozen foods

Emphasize the following foods:• yellow, orange and green colored vegetables, especiallygreen leafy vegetables (all cooked)• lean meats, any fish, (but no shell-fish), or chicken andturkey• legumes (lentils, and any beans)• whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat, oats)• whole grain amaranth, or barley is a wonderful grain, especially job’s tears barley, for those of you for whomgluten does not cause mucus and congestion

Some basic eating principles for liver detox:

• start the day, end the day and during the meal, drink acup of hot water with lemon or lime juice• eat only when hungry• leave the table hungry• never overeat• don’t fast, as it will lead to the inevitable binging, unless you know how to do a fast and how to break afast, and you are not working or under stress at the time• supplement throughout the day with vegetable juicesand take all your vitamins• limit your fruit intake to two pieces of fruit per day andeat it separtately from other foods• drink plenty of water or hot tea all day long

Some supplements to consider:• A good colonic cleanse such as Blue Heron• Chinese detox herbs such as Free and Easy Wandereror Minor Bupluerum Formula• Digestive enzymes such as PanPlex 2-Phase• Probiotics• Homeopathic Nux vomica 6 C - but only if you are not

on a constitutional homeopathic (and remember tofollow all your homeopathic rules)

If you begin to feel faint or have any other symptoms, stop your detox and consult a health practitioner. Ifyour health is not great to begin with, or you have anyblood-sugar problems, or you tend to have anxiety ordepression, do not do a detox unless under the supervi-sion of a health practitioner. Do not stop taking any ofyour Western pharmaceutical prescribed medicationswithout the supervision and full knowledge of yourmedical doctor.

If you are able to do some deep emotional release workat the same time as you are doing your liver cleansing, the process will be twice as valuable. This is becausethe liver is in charge of anger, resentment and the freeflow of energy. Your digestion and immunity shouldimprove more quickly if you also do the emotionalrelease work, and any headaches you have should alsostop. Allergies should also be expected to improve andany PMS symptoms should lesson.

What happens on and after December21, 2012? There has been muchconfusion and many predictionsbased on the Mayan calendar. Some people think time on Earth

will end…but what if there was an intact and competeresource from the ancestors that will give us the wisdomwe need for the shift and an understanding of thecoming era?

“Most people think that the knowledge associatedwith the calendars of ancient Mexico did not survive, butthis is not the case,” says Magaña. “We have a full andliving tradition that was hidden so it could remain pureand intact until it was needed. The knowledge was pre-served by the guardians in the Nahuatl language andpassed along in secret from Teacher to student for 1,400years. It includes teachings, ceremonies, practices, poses, dances, philosophy, prophecy, and in-depthunderstanding of the mathematics of the cosmos andhow this all relates to human consciousness. It is beingmade available now, to everyone, because it is needed.”

What is the Shift from the Fifth to the Sixth Sun?

According to Toltec/Aztec tradition and calendar themovement from the Fifth to the Sixth Sun is a shift inhuman consciousness—our understanding of how werelate to Self, each other, the Earth and the cosmos. Inthe era of the Fifth Sun, (the era of light) humans wereprojecting their existence outside of themselves; focusedon conquest and understanding of the physical worldand relationships with others. With the new Sun (an eraof darkness) humans will be turned inward where welearn to relate to the inner aspects of ourselves, thedivine, and the unconscious.

The Sixth Sun brings a new energy that representsan opportunity. We have a choice–we can either movetoward our further destruction, or along a path to mani-fest our highest nature. In order to bring back balanceand live from a state of grace, there is individual innerwork to be done. We must each engage our shadow, orthe unknown aspects of ourselves, that include both neg-ative (selfish or damaging beliefs, instincts, emotions

and behavioral patterns that keep us oriented around ourown gain) and positive qualities (our giving nature andinternal power.) But how do we change?

Sacred Wisdom Revealed

This book contains breathing exercises, sacred dances, poses and other ancient practices that are based on cos-mic mathematics which show us how to realign our-selves with the universe, Earth and the elements to assistwith the transition from one Sun to the next. Theseteachings show us how to work with our shadow anddreaming states, and ultimately help us align ourselveswith our highest nature so that we can take responsibili-ty for the sacredness of life and move successfullythrough this transition.

There is a mathematical order that governs all thatexists, from the infinite sky and every single moment, tothe entire universe and each individual being: this is theorder that is expressed in the calendar.

We have embarked upon a transition towards a newcycle, and therefore we need to understand what is goingon and how to make the best use of the present time. This is the legacy that Mexico, once known as Anáhuac, can offer humanity as a whole.

If we wish to understand what change will takeplace in 2012, which will become even more clearly vis-ible in 2021, it is necessary for us to develop a very clearunderstanding of how each instant of the physical worldis created out of the subtle world.

Time is speeding up and the distance between athought and its manifestation is shrinking. This new erawill allow for anything—constructive or destructive—tomanifest much more rapidly.

When we synchronize ourselves with the relevantlunar dates, hours and phases, we will align our personalintention with the cosmic intelligence; there will be aharmony and ease in our lives.

The description of these future Suns has been pre-served in the memory of the guardians in the Nahuatllanguage and to this day they continue to repeat it suc-cinctly in its oral version, making use of a series of shortmetaphors to describe the characteristics of each Sun.

According to the Prophecy of Cuauhtemoc in 1521,(great Aztec ruler after Montezuma) this ancient wisdomtradition possesses a series of teachings that must beshared with the rest of humankind at this precisemoment in history.

Aztec/Toltec Calendar

The Aztec calendar was carved in stone during the FifthSun (academics believe 1479 but keepers of the wisdomsay it is older) and contains detailed information on thelast five Suns (eras of human and Earth history). As acyclical calendar, it also provides information regardingthe coming Suns. The Mayan long count calendar endedon October 28, 2011 (not 2012, as is commonlybelieved) but the Aztec calendar, includes two morecycles or 13,250 years and tell us that this shift from theFifth to the Sixth Sun presents us with an opportunity fora change in human consciousness.

The Ancient Toltec Wisdom and Cycles of Time

The Toltecs were the masters and teachers of the Aztecsand Mayans—all experts in understanding the relation-ship that exists between subtle energy, astronomical phe-nomena and human consciousness. Through eons ofexperience they knew how to interpret the mathematicalor universal order that governs all of existence by meas-uring and observing cycles of time (day to night, lunar, solar, stellar and galactic), the impact they had on theEarth (elements, seasons and tides), human conscious-ness, and perception.

Horses run through our dreams. Wewake, hearts pounding, still feeling thethunder of the hoofbeats.

Our dream horses are not the same, of course. Somepeople are oppressed by dreams of a black horse thatseems like a figure of death, or a red horse forebodingwar and bloodshed, or a ghostly pale horse that bringsthe sense of sorrow and bereavement. Such dreams—and Henry Fuseli’s famous painting of nightmare—haveencouraged the belief that the “nightmare” has to dowith a mare, whereas, in fact (the etymologists say), themare part here is most likely derived from the OldGermanic mer, meaning “something that crushes andoppresses.”

In dreams, the state of a horse is often a rather exactanalog for the state of our bodies and our vital energy. When you dream of a starving horse, you want to ask:

What part of me needs to be nourished and fed? Youdream of horses flayed and hung up under the roofbeams (as did a dreamer in one of my workshops), andyou need to ask: Which parts of me have been flayed andviolated in the course of my life, and how do I heal andbring those parts back to life? Such a dream also evokesthe ancient rituals of horse sacrifice—common to manycultures—and might also require a search back acrosstime into primal material from the realm of the ances-tors, lost to ordinary consciousness but alive in the deepsof the collective memory.

In Greek mythology, horses are the gift of Poseidonand come surging from the sea, their streaming manesvisible in the whitecaps. Or they irrupt from the darkUnderworld, from whence Hades charges on his blackstallion to ravish Persephone with his unstoppable sexu-al energy and hurl her into a realm of savage initiationbeneath the realm she knows. Yet in Arcadia,Persephone’s mother, Demeter, the great goddess of

earth and grain and beer, was depicted with a horse’shead.

Go to the British Isles, and you find the white marerevered as the mount and form of the Goddess. She isEpona, and her prints still mark the land whichever wayyou ride, even if only by train or car or Shanks’ pony. Inancient Ireland, a true king was required to mate with thewhite mare, as the living symbol of the sacred earth. (Itwould take a manful king indeed to couple with a mare;I suspect a priestess was substituted.)

The white horse crosses the oceans, in contemporarydreams, as in one shared with me by a California womanof Irish descent. In her dream, she sees a beautiful whitehorse in the mist. A voice speaks to her from a higherlevel, telling her, “This horse is you in another lifetime.”She is thrilled and amazed to be told that she belongedto a certain pack of horses with an old Gaelic name. Nowshe can see them all running together, through the deepmist. She is told it is very important that she rememberthis “horse existence” and what she learned then, andthat this will also help to explain and deepen her soulconnection with her husband, a lover of horses.

We know the horse in certain living myths as healerand teacher, as a vehicle for travel to higher realms, andas the source of creative inspiration. It is the hooves ofPegasus, rending the rock, that open the Hippocrenespring beside the grove of the Muses, from which poets

have drunk ever since. It is Chiron the centaur, the man-horse, who is the mentor of Asklepios, the man-godsynonymous with healing, especially through dreams. Infairy tales (by the Grimms and others), it is often thehorse that can find the way when humans are lost.

I dreamed of rounding up a great herd of wild horses, and understood, waking in excitement and delight, thatthis was about bringing vital energy back where itbelongs and helping to shape a model of understandingand practice of soul recovery for communities and indi-viduals. The wild horse racing through our dreams maybe the windhorse of spirit, or vital essence, that needsboth to run free and to be harnessed to a life path and ahuman purpose.

What is soul loss? When we suffer trauma or bitter disappointment or vio-lent shock, soul may leave the body, to escape. This pro-duces the phenomenon that psychologists call dissocia-tion and shamans call soul loss. It can be seen as a sur-vival mechanism. When you can’t take any more pain, you go away in order to make it through.

A child who has been abused, a survivor grieving fora beloved partner who has died, a lover who has beenbetrayed and abandoned, a soldier who is shell-shocked,and the victim of a terrible accident are all likely to havesuffered major soul loss.

Let’s also notice that soul loss need not be major, orthe result of violent events. We suffer a lesser degree ofsoul loss when choose one direction in life over another,or when we put our energy and focus into one thingrather than another – like holding down the job insteadof pursuing a creative project, or being a mom instead ofa lover (or vice versa). Soul loss can also be merely

temporary and transitional “soul drift”, as when we arejet-lagged and it takes a while for us to catch up withourselves.

What are the symptoms of soul loss? Common symptoms of soul loss include: chronicfatigue; emotional numbness; chronic depression; spaci-ness; addictive behaviors; low self-esteem; inability tolet go of past situations or people no longer in your life;dissociation and multiple personality disorder; obesity orunexplained weight gain; abusive behaviors; absence ofdream recall; recurring dreams of locations from earlierlife, or of a self separate from your present self

What is the difference, in a practical sense, betweensomeone with a lot of soul in their bodies and some-one who does not? For people with a lot of soul, or vital energy, in their bod-ies, most of the symptoms of soul-loss listed above

would be rare, transient, or absent. For someone whohas suffered significant soul loss, three or more of thesesymptoms are likely to be chronic.

Why does the soul have a hard time staying in thebody? We suffer pain or abuse, grief or shame, and part of usfids the world so cruel that we want to go away. Soulloss is also caused by wrenching life choices: we decideto leave a relationship, a home, a job, a country, alifestyle—but part of us resists that choice, sometimes tothe point of splitting away and withdrawing its energyfrom our lives. We also lose soul energy when we giveup on our dreams and settle for a life of dull compro-mise, refusing to trust ourselves to love or to take thatcreative leap.

Where does soul go when it leaves? Sometimes we find that a part of ourselves is stuck in theold place, in Grandma’s house, or in the apartment weshared with our first love. Sometimes a soul part we lostseems to be living in a separate reality, like the land ofthe Lost Boys in Peter Pan. When we wish ourselvesdead, a part of our soul may go far way, as far as a Landof the Dead.

Are all aspects of soul recoverable? There are parts that are so damaged we don’t want themback. Sometime they appear burned or charred, dark oraddicted. Sometimes our life choices are so radical thata part of ourselves simply cannot be persuaded to shareour present situation. For example, my inner business-man is quite disgusted with the choices I have made, andwon’t stay close to me unless I make money more of apriority than I am likely to do!

What is the first step that someone who would like toexperience more soul in their life to take? You do some cleanup, and you ask for help. In the book,as in my retreats, I offer practical guidance for psychiccleansing and release. One of my favorites is a very sim-ple fire releasing in which we cast out any heavy ener-gies that are holding us back and clear a space for vitalsoul to come back in. It’s very important to rememberthat we have help available, including from our spiritualallies and our own Greater Self, and that it’s always agood idea to ask for help nicely.

What role does addiction play in soul loss? Addiction can be both a cause and an effect of soul loss.Part of our brighter energy may leave us if we fall intohabits and company it doesn’t like. When we are miss-ing a part of ourselves, things come in to fill the gap, andwe reach for things to fill that gap. From a shamanicviewpoint, addictions are often worsened by spirits ofthe dead who are seeking to feed their own cravingsthrough a living person. I have never met a true alco-

holic, for example, who has not (from my viewpoint)been accompanied by dead drunks. In the book, as in myprograms, I offer practical guidance to create healthypsychic boundaries between the living and the deceased.

What is the difference between spirit and soul?We can’t lose spirit, when the term means mind, higherconsciousness or our spark of the Godhead. But we canlose contact with it, and block our own access to theGreater Self. Soul is a different matter. Soul is quitemobile and soul energy is divisible; we can lose parts ofit and take on parts from others that we really don’t wantaround.

You have developed an original approach to healingthrough what you call “soul recovery”. What are thekey elements in this approach? We use the core techniques of Active Dreaming to bringmore of soul into the body and help others to becomewhole. By learning to share dreams with others in theright way, we create a safe space where our younger andbrighter selves can draw closer, and we start to buildcommunities of soul friends. By learning to use a dreamas a doorway through which we can travel — in shaman-ic lucid dreaming — into a deeper space, we can go tothe places where lost souls can be found and reclaimed, and we help each other to do this.

Are there other ways, in addition to working withour dreams, to experience soul recovery? If so, whatare they? Soul retrieval, as opposed to soul recovery is a shaman-ic operation in which the practitioner makes a journeyon behalf of a client to locate lost aspects of soul, bringsthem back, and transfers them to the client’s body, oftenby blowing them into energy centers such as the heartand the crown of the head. does not reach, and may be essential in cases where peo-ple are missing so much of themselves that they are notequipped to become self-healers until an interventionhas taken place. The limitation of this is approach is thatnearly everything depends on the character and skill ofthe practitioner, on the reality of his or her connectionwith spirit helpers, and on the quality and motivation ofthose helpers.

You say that dreams do not only show us what thesoul wants, they also show us where it has gone. Please elaborate and provide an example of this. Our dreams can tell us which parts of ourselves may bemissing, and when it is timely to bring them home.Recurring dreams in which we go back to a scene fromour earlier lives may indicate that a part of us hasremained there. Dreams in which we perceive a youngerself as a separate individual may be nudging us to rec-ognize and recover a part of ourselves we lost at that age.Sometimes we do not know who that beautiful child is—until we take a closer look.

A middle-aged woman recently approached me forhelp. She told me, “I feel I have lost the part of me thatcan give trust and know joy.” As preparation for ourmeeting, I asked her to start a dream journal, althoughshe had told me she had not remembered her dreams formany years. When she came to see me, she had suc-ceeded in capturing just one tiny fragment from a dream. She remembered that she was standing over a table, looking at three large-size “post-it” notes. Each had atyped message. But the ink had faded and she could notread the messages.

Slowly and carefully, I helped her to relax andencouraged her to try to go back inside her dream. Quitequickly, she found herself inside a room in the housewhere she had lived with her ex-husband prior to theirdivorce, almost twenty years before. Now she could readthe typed messages. The first read in bold capitals,“YOU CAN DO IT.” They were all about living with

heart, and trusting life. She realized that she had left her ability to love and

to trust in that room for nearly twenty years. I asked herwhat she needed to do. She told me, “I need to bring myheart out of that room and put it back in my body.” Shegathered up the messages and made the motion of bring-ing them into her heart. As her hands crossed over theplace of her heart, we both saw a sweet and gentle lightshine out from her heart center. She trembled, eyes shin-ing, and told me, “Something just came back. Somethingthat was missing for twenty years.”

What is a shaman? First and last, the shaman is a dreamer. Shamans typi-cally receive their calling in dreams and are initiated andtrained in the Dreamtime. The heart of their practice isthe intentional dream journey. They may incubatedreams to diagnose a patient and select the appropriatetreatment. They travel—wide awake and lucid—in theirdream bodies to find lost souls, to intercede with thespirits, to fight sorcerers, and to guide spirits of thedeparted along the right roads.

What is the relationship between dreaming andshamanism? The essence of the shaman’s power to travel and to healis the ability to dream strong. In our everyday modernlives, we stand at the edge of such power when we dreamand remember to do something with our dreams. If youwant to be a shaman, start at the breakfast table, by shar-ing dreams the right way with your family and friends.

Can we meet the deceased in our dreams? Contact with the deceased, especially in dreams, is com-mon and it is natural, rather than supernatural, for threereasons. Our deceased may still be around, sometimesbecause they don’t understand that they are dead. Orthey may come visiting. And in dreams, we travel torealms where the departed are at home; this has been themain source of human belief in a soul that survivesdeath. We need to understand that our ability to commu-nicate with the deceased through dreaming can be atremendous source of healing and closure.

What does it mean when we dream of animals? In the nature and condition of our dream animals, we seethe state of our own vital energy. But this goes beyondpersonal psychology. Dream animals come to claim usas powers of the deeper world, revered and inhabited byour ancestors and still vitally alive in the deep cave ofancestral knowing.

Forming a strong connection with a dream animal isalready soul recovery, restoring vital energy and clarify-ing the natural path of that energy. The dream animalmay prove to be a power animal, and a guide and pro-tector for other forms of soul recovery for ourselves orothers.

What do you mean when you say that “dreamers aretime travelers”? We travel outside time in our spontaneous night dreams, into the past and the future and into parallel realities. Aswe become more conscious and active dreamers, webecome able to develop skills for trans-temporal healingand adventure. In the book and in my workshops, I guidepeople to make a conscious journey across time tounderstand and resolve issues involving counterpart per-sonalities in the past or the future. I also explain how toyou can journey to younger versions of yourself withinyour present life experience, in their own Now time. Youcan provide encouragement and counsel that a youngerself may need at a time of unbearable pain or challenge. From this can flow tremendous healing for both of you,in your own times.

What is “dream archaeology”? Dream archaeology is an amazing tool for accessing thenecessary past and facilitating cultural; soul recovery. Itworks in two ways. Secrets of the past, of which thewaking mind may know nothing or very little, come tous in dreams because we are ready for them. Or, alreadyengaged in the quest, we draw on the skills of shamaniclucid dreaming, as well as spontaneous gifts of the night,to find what cannot be located in ordinary ways, butwhat can often be confirmed by subsequent dream-directed research. The dream archaeologist combinesthe skills of the shaman, the scholar, and the detective.

Many of us are suffering a dream drought. How dowe begin to reconnect with our dreams? Set yourself a juicy intention for the night and whenev-er you wake up, write something down. You don’tremember a dream? Record something anyway, likeyour first thoughts or feelings on waking. That way youare saying to your dream source: I’m here, I’m ready toplay. Be kind to fragments. That wisp of a dream—maybe just a color or a funny word—can be a clue thatcan lead you to interesting things. And remember you

don’t have to go to sleep in order to dream. When youpay more attention to synchronicity in waking life, youmay find your night dreams open up too,

How can we learn to “navigate by synchronicity”? Two coincidence games for any day. First: ask yourselfis there a theme or question on which you would likesome guidance right now. Then play this game. Carrythat question with you and accept the first unusual orstriking thing that enters your field of perception as apossible message from the world. Second: schedule tenminutes of free time every day. Go outside and use all ofyour senses to see what the world may be saying to you. This works in a city street, or out in the woods, any-where you are ready to expand your attention.

What led you to follow the path of a shamanic dreamteacher, for which, as you say, “there is no careertrack in our culture”? I have always been a dreamer, and I learned in boyhood—in crises of illness and through friendship withAborigines—that our dreams can take us into theDreamtime, into a deeper world where we may be ableto discover the origin and purpose of our lives. Then inthe mid-1980s I had what Jung called a “confrontationwith the unconscious” after I moved to a farm on theedge of traditional Mohawk land and started dreaming ina language I did not initially understand, which I learnedto be an archaic form of Mohawk. My visionary encoun-ters with a Mohawk dream shaman of long ago, com-bined with other inner events, deepened my understand-ing of what dreaming can be, and led me to a completere-evaluation of what matters in life.

Robert Moss is the author of Dreaming the Soul Back Homeand numerous other books about dreaming, shamanism, andimagination. His fascination with the dreamworld began inhis childhood in Australia, when he had three near-deathexperiences and first learned the ways of a traditional dream-ing people through his friendship with Aborigines. When National Aeronautics andSpace Administration Data andPhoto Control Department manag-er, Ken Johnston, who worked forthe space agency’s Lunar

Receiving Laboratory during the Apollo missions, wasfired for telling the truth about alien artifacts on theMoon, he went public. And the he blew the whistle onthe American space agency. According to Johnston,Apollo astronauts brought back photographic evidenceof the artifacts they found during their lunar extravehic-ular activities. Johnston claims NASA ordered him todestroy the EVA images while he was at the JetPropulsion Laboratory, but he steadfastly refused. Nowstunning new photos have emerged that support the for-mer NASA employee’s assertions—photos of pyramids—and one incredible photo that undeniably reveals ajaw-dropping alien lunar fortress…

Ken Johnston vindicatedIntrigued with the inexplicable, Ken Johnston soughtmore information about the photos of obviously artifi-cial structures that Apollo astronauts on various lunarmissions snapped during their explorations of the Moon.

Johnston, an earnest seeker of truth, wasstonewalled by higher ups. The more he pressed, themore blank looks he received.

Frustrated, he refused to stop looking for an officialexplanation of the incredible lunar anomalies and arti-facts he plainly saw on many unretouched NASA pho-tos. NASA finally had enough of him and unceremoni-ously tossed Johnston out.

Pyramids on the MoonPyramids on the Moon

Since his ignominious departure from the prestigiousspace agency, Johnston’s been telling his story to anywilling to listen. He’s lectured before groups andappeared as a guest with Las Vegas journalist GeorgeKnapp on George Noory’s Coast to Coast AM radioshow shortly after the article NASA Whistleblower:Alien Moon Cities Exist appeared in Before It’s News.

The following two images are from the Youtube videoPyramids on the Moon — NASA’s Apollo lunar coverup:

About the remarkable pyramid, Unexplainable.netwrites: “An image from the Apollo 17 moon missionclearly shows what appears to be a pyramid on the sur-face of the moon which resembles the pyramid’s foundin Egypt. NASA claims that this photo is an overex-posed frame with no relevance. But with initial exposurecorrection, and high contrast noise reduction it is clearthat an unnatural structure stands on the Moon’ssurface.”

Lunar anomalies were well-documented beforeJohnston’s departure and researchers of the Moon andMars have published countless examples of odd arti-facts, mysterious complexes, ancient structures andother assorted “impossible” things on various moonsand planets in the solar system.

Lending a measure of credence to the hypothesis that aprevious civilization occupied the solar system and builtoutposts off-Earth is the photographic evidence of pos-sible pyramids on Mars, especially in the Cydoniaregion, and the intricate network of pyramids spanninghistory and pre-history across the contintinents of Earth.

Now photographic images ofalien pyramids on the Moon canbe added to the mounting evi-dence of a history that’s beenhidden—or forgotten—byMankind.

Why do so many pyramidsexist on the Moon (with manymore likely to be discovered)?A possible answer: power.

The pyramidal shape is aperfect geometric configurationfor gathering solar power andstoring the energy. Current

projects are underway by several countries to build pyra-mid solar collectors. The United Arab Emirates hasplans to construct pyramid solar collectors in Abu Dhabias part of their national power grid.

Beyond the lunar pyramids is another structure. Theimage of it is a high enough resolution that its functionis unmistakable and it cannot be dismissed as a boulder, imaging abberation or artifact, or trick of light.

The image is cropped and the original NASA Moonphoto the image appears on is number AS11-38-5564.

The fortress standing inside a lunar crater is easyenough to discern without highlighting or improving theimage. When the image is partially colorized for clarity, however, it is very difficult to argue the object is natural.

Images like these throw great doubt on some of thephotos shared with the public by NASA over the pastfifty years, and certainly bolster the claim by Johnstonand others of a massive, ongoing cover-up of structureson the Moon and Mars.

Life is Energy in a permanent process ofrenewal, unfolding moment to moment. Ithas no beginning and it will never have anend. It comes from Eternity and it flows, perpetually, towards the same Eternity, in

a perfectly harmonious order. We can also call it Absolute Truth or God; these

words define its Essence and content as All there is, inAll and Everything, seen or unseen.

As Unique Reality, It is also endowed with creativeforce, and the Aliveness within us represents the DivineSpark which cannot be conditioned or measured, searched for or evaluated. It exists—purely and simply—as obvious and Unique Reality in a continuous processof evolution.

This Divine Particle—Perfection in Itself—is asso-ciated with a physical body and an imperfect mind; Itpermanently pursues perfection and the return to theSacred Source where It originated. Destined to experi-

ence the association with the relative elements of thephysical Universe, the Divine Spark—n moments ofexistence—comes into contact with “What is not real”,that is, the world of illusions, which disappears sponta-neously. In the “psychological void”, It reveals Itselfthrough Itself as Sublime Reality.

****

The Sacred or God is the Source of Life; It breathesenergy and life into the whole existence. It permeates alland everything as Absolute Love. It has no beginning, Itwas not created by anyone and It will never die. It was,is and will always be immortal Existence, through Itselfand by Itself.

It contains both the quality of stillness, as well asthat of eternal movement. It affirms Itself as Beauty,Kindness and limitless Love. It does not force, imposeor compel anyone or anything, for Its patience is infinite.

Both in the case of human beings, as well aswith everything that exists, It does not imposeIts authority or law, because in Its quality asPerfection It gives everyone freedom and, when needed, It helps the whole of creation sat-isfy its basic necessities.

The imaginary individual mind cannotencounter It, in any circumstance, because the“ego” cannot encompass that which is all-encompassing. Separating from It or trying tounderstand It with the knowing mind are acts ofimpiety.

Only the Sacred can affirm: “I Am”. Therest are and will always remain mere fantasiesof the mind.

Understanding

According to depth, there are three layers ofunderstanding:

• Superficial understanding—at the level of words;• Mental understanding, an association of concepts;• And finally, total understanding—which is boundless.

Total understanding is—by itself and throughitself—true understanding,

Its spontaneous perception breaks the sphere of thelimited,

The chains of the mind are shattered, in a state offreedom,

All is enlightened in the sparkle of clarity.

Attention is the key, providing comprehension,Through it, all is clear and we grasp the essence of

things spontaneously,Being and action—the beginning of transformation,

It dispels the darkness of the mind through fullEnlightenment.

Through spontaneous understanding, we are anintegral being,

Melting with life, each moment is true within us.We are one with Immensity, in syntony with the

rhythm of the Universe,Through it, the fragmentation is dissolved.

****

In order to correctly understand Life in Its gen-eral unfoldment, as newness and freshnessfrom one moment to another, we need toencounter It with the same qualities that It has.

We need to welcome Life with a complete-ly open being, through a direct contact. Neitherthe past, preserved in the memory, nor thefuture participate in this simple encounter. Wejust listen and watch – with an all-encompass-ing Attention—everything that appears auto-matically on the surface of our consciousness:thoughts, images, desires, fears, emotions etc.triggered by the impressions coming from theexternal world or from within our being. Theseoutdated and inadequate apparitions —as “ego”in action—are completely dissipated by therays of the Light-Attention.

Practically, this simple perception of the movementof Life in all its manifestations ends our whole condi-tioning, without any acts of will on our part. In theempty space that ensues, a “psychological void”appears; in its climate, we experience: peace, harmonyand a total independence from our whole accumulatedknowledge.

This is the moment of all-encompassing perception, determined by our encounter with Life; we have a newmind and a different way of thinking; new brain cells—unaffected by previous experiences—start to function. From now on we fully understand and embrace Life, eliminating any traumas or conflictual states.

In this fortunate circumstance, the “ego”—based onold, outdated cells—is instantly dissipated, as well as itsenergies and erroneous mentality.

Free from the past, we are eternal freshness and wehave the ability to encompass and understand the fresh-ness of Life in a real way.

The secret of unconditional happiness—to whichevery living being aspires—lies in this direct contactwith the movement of Life, as a whole being integratedinto the eternal present.

This message, expressed in very simple words, invitesyou to watch yourself, in every circumstance, as often aspossible. Each such encounter—performed in the rightmanner—constantly weakens the authority of the “ego”.

Attention—as a shining Light—dissipates all thedarkness, dissolving and disintegrating everything itencounters, like a laser. We don’t memorize anythingfrom the poem we have just read or re-read. In this way,the verses will be always new—completely unknown tous—as if we are reading them for the first time; just like, when you look into a mirror, you see your face in it as iffor the first time.

The passiveness of the mind, as a result of all-encompassing and lucid Attention, transcends us fromthe finite world into the reality of the Absolute, reveal-ing our true divine origin. Completely forget the poems,as well as the author! Just remain with the constant actof listening and watching yourself, in utter simplicity.

You don’t need anyone or anything on this path ofspiritual awakening! Drop all the crutches you rely on,for they are worthless! On the contrary, they are realobstacles on this wondrous journey, which can only beaccomplished in the absence of the “ego”, in utteraloneness, as a complete human being, body and mindas “One”.

How many times have you said to your-self, “If I only knew what he/she wasthinking?” Don’t worry, you will findout. When your body passes into thespiritual realm, you will essentially

press the replay button on the story of your life. You willtravel back in time and see everyone you have encoun-tered in your lifetime. The unique and amazing part ofthis experience is that, unlike watching a replay on yourtelevision where you simply see characters re-enact sit-uations, you will actually be there in that moment, expe-riencing everyone’s emotions are if they were your own.

As a psychic medium, I often receive messagesfrom those who have died who are now able to see this“bigger picture” of how they had affected everyone intheir lives. They often say that they wish they had donethings differently while they were still here in their phys-ical bodies and are sorry they never told their loved oneshow much they loved them. I often hear the same regretsfrom their living loved ones who also feel it is too late tomake things right.

After hearing this time and time again, I realized Ineeded to spread the important message that we don’thave to wait until we die to see the bigger picture of howwe are affecting those in our life. We have a chanceright now to release any guilt or resentment we may havein our hearts. We have an opportunity to leave this lifewith no regrets.

But how can we do that? Well, like many instancesin our lives, the answer is very simple – with a letter. Wecan write our loved ones a positive letter, telling themhow much they mean to us. While this may not be theeasiest thing to do, it will “eternally” be worth it.

Writing a letter works because we will be taking thetime to say exactly what we have always needed to say.We could write everything we would want our lovedones to know, as if we were looking back at our liveswith them. The letter should be a very positive one, andwe would need to include anything in the letter that wewould regret not saying after we left this world.

A letter writing exercise is also a great way to helpus heal unresolved issues with our loved ones. We

wouldn’t have any regrets after this life, because we’d beable to say and do everything that was needed now.

The different types of letters can include:

• The gratitude letter - a letter with words of loveand encouragement to significant people in our lives

• The forgiveness letter - a letter when attemptingto forgive someone else or if you are the one who needsto be forgiven.

• A letter to yourself - a loving letter of apprecia-tion to yourself

• A letter to deceased love ones - a letter of eitherappreciation, forgiveness, or just to maintain your con-nection to those who have died.

I wrote these types of letters to those in my life, and theresults were better than I could ever have anticipated. While these letters were not always easy to write, theyhave made all the difference, not only in our communi-cation with each other, but in the peace that now existsbetween all of us.

One of the greatest benefits I received was from aletter I wrote to my mother. The day before she passedaway last year, she was unaware of what was going onaround her. As she lay in bed, I was so happy to see theletter I had written to her a year before lying on her desk.It had everything I needed to say, so I pulled up a chairand softly read those words to her. Although she had notresponded earlier to anything, as I was reading my letterof love to her, the expression on her face completelychanged, and she raised her hands to her mouth. She had

heard me! What a blessing it was thatI had already written these perfectwords and was able to read them toher during her final days. EverythingI needed to say was said, and I had noregrets.

You, too, will be able to experi-ence tremendous blessings in yourlife by taking the time to write thesetypes of letters to your loved ones.Tell them everything you need to tellthem now. Write down your words oflove and forgiveness (whether youwant them to forgive you or you wantto forgive them). Try to see throughtheir eyes how you are affecting

them, and let them know you will take whatever stepsthat are necessary to heal your relationships with them.

If you take advantage of this fulfilling and lifechanging exercise while you’re here on earth, yourwhole life will take on another direction. You won’t haveto wait until you die to see the bigger picture of how youare affecting those around you. You will be able to do itnow, and create peace in your life and in the lives aroundyou, before it is too late.

Many blessings to you!

It’s no accident that the series has been scheduled toair in most cities on Sunday morning, traditionally thetime reserved for religious and spiritual fare. As ourawareness of other cultures around the world expands, along with our desire for peace amongst peoples, so doesour need to know, and come to understand others’ beliefsystems and faith traditions. Each “Global Spirit”episode is a rich, stimulating immersion in this realm, featuring knowledgeable, engaging leaders and practi-

The presenting host is John Cleese of “MontyPython” fame, who provides a witty yet meaningfulopening and closing commentary for each program. Theveteran producer/director of the series is StephenOlsson, whose credits include National Emmy, Peabodyand DuPont-Columbia awards, and whose filmsequences, shot in locations around the world—fromVietnam to Tibet to India to the American Southwest—are featured throughout the series, creating a cinematicexperiential dimension to the topics being discussed in-studio. Season One of “Global Spirit” consists of ten hour-long programs:

1) The Spiritual Quest – explores the eternal desirefor spiritual wisdom and enlightenment, featuring inter-nationally renowned author and comparative religionscholar Karen Armstrong and Professor of Buddhiststudies Dr. Robert Thurman.

2) Forgiveness and Healing – Author and psy-chotherapist Dr. Ed Tick and his wife Kate Dahlstedttake a group of PTSD traumatized Vietnam veteransback to the land where they fought and killed to find for-giveness and healing, while Azim Khamisa shares howhe learned to forgive the man who killed his only son.

3) Music, Sound and the Sacred – An explorationof the transcendent power of music, featuring Rev. AlanJones, and Grammy-award-winning singer and memberof the Native American Onondaga tribe JoanneShenandoah.

4) Art and the Creative Spirit – What makes artsacred? What kinds of transcendent states and spiritualrealms have artists tried to invoke and evoke? Does thecreative spirit lie within the artist, or is it channeledthrough the artist from some “higher power”? The pro-gram addresses these questions, and presents the workand teachings of Buddhist artist and teacher LamaLhanang Rinpoche as well as Pueblo Indian sculptorEstella Loretto.

5) The Journey Towards Oneness – In thisGlobal Spirit episode, the deep undercurrent teachingsof all religions that point in the direction of Oneness, or“Unity Consciousness” is explored. Guests are physicistDr. Ravi Ravindra, who comes from the Hindu tradi-tion but maintains a close philosophical association withKrishnamurti and the Gurdjieff teachings, meetsLlewellyn Vaughan-Lee, a Naqshbandi Sufi teacher andJungian analyst, who has written extensively about unity

– Compared with those who grew up in the western, industrialized world, indigenous peoples have a pro-foundly different relationship to Nature, to the Earth andto the realm of the Spirit. In this Global Spirit episode,Flordemayo, a Mayan spirit healer, and Angaangaq, anEskimo-Kalaalit Shaman from Greenland share theirancient wisdom and knowledge about man’s relationshipto nature, as well as the profoundly sacred nature of alllife.

7) The Mystical Experience – Throughout history, the “mystical path” of achieving “direct contact” withthe Divine has resulted in powerful spiritual experiences, some of which have actually led to the founding of aworld religion, a religious order, or spawned some of themost profound ecstatic poetry ever written. In this pro-gram, these experiences are discussed by Benedictinemonk Brother David Steindl-Rast (Christian contem-plation), Rabbi Jonathan Omer-Man (JewishKabbalah) and Maata Lynn Barron (Islamic Sufi).“The Mystical Experience” explores both experientialand analytical approaches to this rich subject.

8) Exploring Consciousness: East and West –The inquiry into human consciousness is in many ways, the “holy grail” of the entire Global Spirit series. Thisprogram features Sraddhalu Ranade, a teacher and sci-entist from the ancient Hindu tradition of Vedanta, andPeter Russell, an author and spiritual practitioner withdecades of relevant research on meditation and a back-ground in physics and psychology from CambridgeUniversity.

9) Oneness: The Big Picture — In this episode,Deepak Chopra shares his philosophical insights onOneness, citing recent scientific studies that point toConsciousness as the fundamental basis of all reality.Riane Eisler, a social scientist and best-selling author(The Chalice & the Blade), sees Oneness not so much asa concept or an abstract state, but as a human goal — a

In thisepisode, Jungian psychologist Dr. StephenAizenstat and Aboriginal elder“Yidumduma” Bill Harney converse aboutdreaming as a connection to meaning in life.Vivid film sequences from the Australian out-back, mix with western imagery from Steve’s Jungiantradition to give an experience of the unconscious.Steve—who visited Australian Aboriginal lands yearsago—shares his experience with dream psychology. Thetwo also share deep, memorable sounds from Bill’s did-jeridoo.

The program host and moderator is Phil Cousineau, anaward-winning writer, teacher, travel leader and story-teller. “A few years back, I had the very good fortune tobe introduced to Phil,” Olsson recalls. “We hit it off, rec-ognizing that in a series like ‘Global Spirit’ we could bemore than the sum of our parts. Phil is a talented writerand fellow spiritual seeker, a close associate of bothJoseph Campbell and Huston Smith. Like Campbell andSmith, Phil has a unique breadth and depth, coupledwith a huge amount of personal integrity, which I thinkcomes across in each program.”

The “Global Spirit” series is produced by the non-profit organization Cultural & Educational Media(http://www.CEMproductions.org) in collaboration withLink (http://www.linktv.org), the first nationwide net-work dedicated to providing Americans with global per-spectives on news, events and culture. Olsson was a co-founder of Link, and a VP of Original Programmingthere for ten years. Yet, his roots are as an independent

producer/director and storyteller, who had lived, studiedand traveled throughout Asia, Africa, Europe and theAmericas.

“I was a filmmaker before I was a television seriesproducer,” notes Olsson. “So I felt a deep drive to createa new kind of television series where film can do what itdoes best, give an experiential sense of ‘being there,’ andcombine that with informed and inspired deep conversa-tion, in such a way that the experiential and the analyti-cal can modulate and punctuate each other, hopefullyprompting new discoveries.”

As Cousineau describes it, “Our goal was to add towhat the medieval philosophers called ‘the long conver-sation,’ which is a reference to participating with othersin a dialogue about some of the perennial concerns ofthe human race: love and death, good and evil, thesacred and the profane, art and science. The notion oftalking about things that matter, truly, madly, anddeeply, for one uninterrupted hour is a beautiful thing.”Cousineau recalls growing up in a house outside Detroitin the 1950s where his family read the classics out loud, visited museums, and had electrifying conversations.

“My life seems to have been one long attempt toperpetuate those sparks in the soul. I have interviewedpeople from around the world for many years, as areporter and as a documentary filmmaker, but rarely

have I had such an opportunity to combinethemes I care deeply about, guests from vastlydifferent cultures (a Tibetan lama, anAboriginal elder, an English quantum physi-cist), and exciting and exhilarating filmfootage.”

Before “Global Spirit,” Olsson was pro-ducing his own films and creating other seriesfor Link TV. “My first series for Link wascalled ‘Mosaic: World News from the MiddleEast,’ which won a national Peabody Award, then a series called ‘Bridge To Iran’ whichpresents Iranian films with interviews from

Iranian directors, and another live, 90-minute series,‘The Active Opposition,’ hosted by actor Peter Coyote.”

“The Active Opposition” was launched during theBush Administration and was more journalistic, focus-ing on global issues. It featured celebrity guests whowere actively engaged in different issues, such as: WalterCronkite on Media Ownership, Willie Nelson on the deathof the family farm, Harry Belafonte on the United Nations,Noam Chomsky on the Military Industrial Complex, SeanPenn as an Iraq War eyewitness.

“I also produced an earlier series on consciousness-related topics, called ‘Lunch with Bokara,’ hosted byBokara Legendre, a lively woman and a great conversa-tionalist. The ‘Lunch with Bokara’ series first gave mean opportunity to explore some of the timeless, existen-tial questions which haunted me since my youth.”

Olsson, a San Francisco native, remembers, “I’vehad a mixed relationship with formal religion. My shortcareer as an alter boy ended abruptly when I was prayingtoo close to a candle and managed to set myself dramati-cally aflame during a midnight Christmas high mass, andwas promptly fired. I went on to attend a Jesuit highschool, while repairing and restoring old Victorian housesin the Haight-Ashbury. In those years, the Bay Area was aheartland of ‘consciousness’-related interests andsocial/philosophical experiments of all kinds.

“Though only fifteen or sixteen years old, I was for-tunate to be in the Haight-Ashbury during its heyday; itstood just a few blocks from my buttoned-down highschool. Alan Watts, Krishnamurti and Pir Vilayat Khanwere early influences. Then, at 19, after hearing TheBeatles’ White Album, with sitar tracks and ‘Easternconsciousness’ floating in the melodies, I realized I hadno choice and took off for Europe and India. “As anyone who was really on it knows, it wasn’t a

‘hash trail’ but a ‘consciousness trail,’ which connectedEast and West. It was about deep participation in localcultural and spiritual traditions, including the Sufisheikhs and malangs of Afghanistan, the saddhus, swamis and rishis of India, the monks of Nepal. Westayed in ashrams, in temples—and in some deplorablycheap hotels—feeding ourselves, culturally, and spiritu-ally, by the depths of what we were experiencing, everyday. ”

Between his several extended trips to India, Olssonpursued his graduate studies in Anthropology andCommunications. His global consciousness emerged ashe began in earnest to follow his Visual Anthropologyprofessor John Collier’s dictum, to: “Get out there andget directly involved.”

After a few years of intimate exposure with Turkey,Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, where he studied

yoga and meditation with a wide range of spiritualteachers, Olsson landed in Sri Lanka and, through amaz-ing circumstances, met a man he calls a Sufi saint, BawaMujaiyaddeen. “That was an amazing meeting,” recallsOlsson. “Bawa taught me what it looks like for a humanbeing to transcend ego and personality through love, andthe deeper levels of the Sufi “zikr” of remembrance.

“When I learned Bawa was then spending alternateyears in Philadelphia, I took it as a sign and jumped intograd school, studying visual anthropology and commu-nications theory at Temple University.”

From this background in ”Visual Anthropology,”Olsson’s interests expanded from studying the world-views of different societies, to cosmology, metaphysicsand consciousness.

Asked his plans for the future, Olsson enthuses, “wehave four programs ready for ‘Global Spirit’s’ SeasonTwo: a beautiful program on Dreams and theDreamtime with an aboriginal elder/painter meeting aJungian dream expert, each for the first time. Anothercalled Earth Wisdom: For a World in Crisis, filmed at theUN Conference on Indigenous Issues, an upcoming pro-gram on Death as Transformation.

“We are planning a second season and hopefullybeyond. There is no end to the human being’s need totry to understand our place in the universe. As long aswe can continue tapping a deep, meaningful vein withinviewers, and as long as there is support to continue, fromfoundations and from our viewers themselves, we see‘Global Spirit’ expanding, both on national televisionand the Internet.”

Program host Cousineau, closes by noting, “ I wouldlike to end with one of the most inspiring thoughts I’veever run across: ‘A subtle conversation—ah, that is thetrue Garden of Eden.’ A twelfth century Arab philoso-pher said that, and it still rings today. That’s our goalwith ‘Global Spirit.’”
