Monkseaton High School – The Aim

CABE Key Principles for Good School Design:

•Good clear organisation, an easily legible plan, agile, full accessibility.

•Spaces that are well proportioned, efficient and fit for purpose.

•Circulation that is well organised and sufficiently generous.

•Good environmental conditions throughout, including appropriate levels of natural light and ventilation. Environmentally friendly materials.

•Instil attractiveness in design, to provide a designed solution that is comparable to that found in other quality public buildings, which will inspire pupils, staff and parents.

Page 31: Devereux Architects - Education Presentation

Monkseaton High School – The Aim

•Good use of the site, public presence as a civic building wherever possible to engender local pride.

•Creation of attractive external spaces offering appropriate security and a variety of different settings.

•Provision of a site layout that encourages broad community access and use of out of hours.

•Specification of robust non-institutional materials that will weather, perform and wear well.

•Scope for change in both the physical and ICT environment, possibility of extension where appropriate.

Page 32: Devereux Architects - Education Presentation

A sporting heart…

Page 34: Devereux Architects - Education Presentation

Monkseaton High School – The Vision

•360 degree classrooms were tried and tested to respond to the school’s modern vision of teaching and learning

•A whole new learning environment to engage students and receive optimum performance levels

Page 35: Devereux Architects - Education Presentation

Learning Environment

Page 36: Devereux Architects - Education Presentation

• Innovation – state-of-the-art facilities resulting in a whole new learning environment

• Precursor to NTC’s BSF Projects – independent design development

• Flexible and agile spaces – open interior creating ‘passive surveillance’ to prevent bullying and anti-social behaviour

• Independent Learning Areas - ICT-rich environment

• 360 degree classrooms – triangular-shaped to improve performance levels in the classroom.

Monkseaton High School - The Result

Page 37: Devereux Architects - Education Presentation

• Celebrates daylight - helps to improve attention, mental performance, motivation, mood, behaviour and exam performance

• Sustainable environmental solution - positioned in the most sustainable area on site, reducing the effect of heating and cooling

• Natural ventilation - E-stack, controls and maintains a temperate climate within the building

• Unitised construction techniques• Reduced production time on site• Minimised waste• Increased quality due to off-site production• Result – On budget, on programme
