e-Safety And Internet Usage

e-Safety encompasses internet technologies and electronic communications such as mobile phones and wireless technology. It highlights the need to educate children about the benefits and risks of using new technology and provides safeguards and awareness for users to enable them to control their online experiences. Teaching and learning Why Internet use is important? The Internet is an essential element in 21st century life for education, business and social interaction. The school has a duty to provide students with quality Internet access as part of their learning experience. Internet use is a part of the statutory curriculum and a necessary tool for staff and pupils. Many pupils will access the internet outside school and will need to learn how to evaluate online information and to take care of their own safety and security. How Does Internet Use Benefit Education? Benefits of using the internet in education include: • access to world-wide educational resources including museums, libraries and art galleries • rapid and cost effective worldwide communication • inclusion in the National Education Network which connects all UK schools • educational and cultural exchanges between pupils worldwide • access to experts in many fields for pupils and staff • professional development for staff through access to national developments, educational materials and effective curriculum practice • collaboration across support services and professional associations • improved access to technical support including remote management of • networks and automatic system updates • exchange of curriculum and administration data with the Local Authority • access to learning wherever and whenever convenient • greatly increased skills in Literacy Pupils will be taught how to evaluate Internet content Pupils will be educated in the effective use of the Internet in research, including the skills of knowledge location, retrieval and evaluation. Pupils will be taught how to acknowledge the source of information and to be aware of copyright when using Internet material in their own work.

Eastrington Primary School - E-Safety Policy

How Can Internet Use Enhance Learning?

The school internet access is designed expressly for pupil use and includes filtering appropriate to the age of our pupils

Children will be taught what internet use is acceptable and what is not and given clear objectives for internet use

Internet access will be planned to enrich and extend learning activities

Staff will guide pupils in online activities that will support learning outcomes planned for the pupils’ age and maturity

Good Habits e-Safety depends on effective practice at a number of levels:

Responsible ICT use by all staff and pupils; encouraged by education and made explicit through published policies.

Sound implementation of E-safety policy in both administration and curriculum, including secure school network design and use.

Safe and secure broadband from the provider including the effective management of content filtering.

Dangers To Consider Some of the dangers children may face include:

Access to illegal, harmful or inappropriate images or other content

Unauthorised access to/loss of/sharing of personal information

The risk of being subject to grooming by those with whom they make contact on the internet

The sharing/distribution of personal images without an individual’s consent or knowledge

Inappropriate communication/contact with others, including strangers

Cyberbullying

Access to unsuitable video/internet games

An inability to evaluate the quality, accuracy and relevance of information on the internet

Plagiarism and copyright infringement

Illegal downloading of music or video files

The potential for excessive use which may impact on the social and emotional development and learning of the young person.

As with all other risks, it is impossible to eliminate those risks completely. It is therefore essential through good educational provision to build pupils’ resilience to the risks to which they may be exposed, so that they have the confidence and skills to face and deal with these risks. Pupils must be responsible for their own behaviour on the internet, just as they are anywhere else in the school. This includes the materials they choose to access, and the language they use.

Managing Internet Access Information system security School ICT systems capacity and security will be reviewed regularly, through discussions as a staff and with the schools ICT technician. E-mail At present school does not provide children with their own approved e-mail account but as we develop the ICT within school this is something which may be introduced. Pupils are not permitted to log onto private e-mail accounts in school time. In exceptional circumstances and with consent from parents, pupils may be permitted access under full supervision. Published content and the school website The contact details on the website should be the school’s postal address, e-mail address, telephone number and fax number. Staff or pupils’ personal information will not be published. Publishing pupil’s images and work Permission from parents/carers will be obtained before using photographs of their children in accordance with GDPR regulations. Pupils’ full names will not be used anywhere on the website, particularly in association with photographs. Social networking and personal publishing Access to social networking websites is blocked / filtered by the Local Authority Internet Provider. Pupils and parents will be advised that the use of social networking spaces outside school is inappropriate for primary aged pupils and the legal age to hold accounts on many such as YouTube or Instagram is 13 years old. This will be through on-site meetings and newsletters sent home. Pupils are advised never to give out personal details of any kind which may identify them or their location. Pupils are advised not to place personal photos on any social network space In the event that social networking sites are used: Pupils are advised on security and encouraged to set passwords, deny access to unknown individuals and instructed how to block unwanted communications.

Page 5: e-Safety Policy & Internet Usage Policy 2019-20 … · The Internet is an essential element in 21st century life for education, business and social interaction. The school has a duty

Eastrington Primary School - E-Safety Policy

Pupils are encouraged to invite known friends only and deny access to others Managing filtering The school will work with the Internet Service Provider (if necessary) to ensure systems to protect pupils are reviewed and improved. If staff or pupils discover an unsuitable site, it must be reported to the E-Safety Coordinator and logged immediately using the school’s I.C.T. Incident Report Log. Managing emerging technologies Emerging technologies will be examined for educational benefit before use in school is allowed. Mobile phones and wearable technology should not be brought into school by pupils, except with the prior agreement of the head teacher. In no circumstances will they be used during lessons or formal school time. The sending of abusive or inappropriate text messages is forbidden. Use of Communication and Information Technology In School A wide range of rapidly developing communications technologies has the potential to enhance learning. The table in Appendix C shows how the school currently considers the benefit of using these technologies for education outweighs their risks / disadvantages. Authorising Internet access All staff must read the ‘Use of the Internet Policy’ and the ‘Use of Email Policy’. A copy of these documents can be found in the e-Safety File, which is located in the staff room. At Key Stage 1, access to the Internet will be by adult demonstration with occasional directly supervised access to specific, approved on-line materials. Assessing risks In common with other media such as magazines, books and video, some material available via the Internet is unsuitable for pupils. The school will take all reasonable precautions to ensure that users access only appropriate material. However, due to the international scale and linked nature of Internet content, it is not possible to guarantee that unsuitable material will never appear on a school computer. The school cannot accept liability for the material accessed, or any consequences of internet access. However, through careful planning and the setting-up of resources, the risk should be greatly reduced. If staff or pupils discover unsuitable sites, the URL, time and content must be reported to the E safety coordinator and network manager who will investigate and take appropriate action, liaising with broadband provider if necessary

The school will audit I.C.T. provision to establish if the e-safety policy is adequate and that its implementation is effective. The e-safety coordinator will complete a quick self-audit each time this policy is reviewed to help the senior leadership team (SLT) assess whether the e-Safety basics are in place, see Appendix D. Handling E-safety complaints Complaints of Internet misuse will be dealt with by the e-safety coordinator or Headteacher. Any complaint about staff misuse must be referred to the Head Teacher. Complaints of a child protection nature must be dealt with in accordance with school child protection procedures. Any other complaints will be dealt with through the school’s complaints policy Staff should make the E-Safety Co-ordinator aware of any concerns. Communications Policy Introducing the E-safety policy to pupils E-safety rules will be posted in all networked rooms and discussed with the pupils at the start of each year. They will be referenced regularly throughout the year. Pupils will be informed that network and Internet use will be monitored. Staff and the e-Safety policy All staff, including teachers, supply staff, classroom assistants and support staff will be provided with the schools e-Safety Policy and its importance explained through e-Safety training. Staff should be aware that Internet traffic can be monitored. Discretion and professional conduct is essential. Enlisting parents’ support Parents’ attention will be drawn to the School E-Safety Policy in newsletters and at specific meetings (detailed earlier). Failure to Comply Failure to comply in any way with this policy will be considered a serious risk to health & safety and all incidents of non-compliance will be investigated. Appendix B – to be issued in Autumn Term of Foundation Stage 2 Pupil Acceptable I.C.T. Use Agreement / e-Safety Rules Dear Parent/Carer As part of pupils’ curriculum enhancement and the development of I.C.T. skills, we provide supervised access to the Internet in school. I.C.T and access to the Internet is a valuable aid to learning and we want to ensure that it is used safely. Below is a list of the school’s rules for ‘Responsible Internet Use’, in-line with the e-safety Policy. We ask that at a time convenient to you, you discuss the rules with your child – and their importance – and return the completed slip to school. .

I will make sure that all I.C.T. contact with other children and adults is responsible.

I will not deliberately look for, save or send anything that could be unpleasant or nasty. If I accidentally find anything like this I will turn off my monitor and tell my teacher immediately.

I will not give out my own details such as my name, phone number or home address.

I will not arrange to meet someone unless this is part of a school project approved by my teacher and a responsible adult comes with me.

I will be responsible for my behaviour when using I.C.T. because I know that these rules are to keep me safe.

I will only access my own file and not access other people’s work.

I know that my use of ICT can be checked and that my parent/carer contacted if a member of school staff is concerned about my E-Safety.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. E-Safety meetings for parents will be taking place later in the academic year.
