Alfa Romeo spent the first three months of 2007 in a clandestine operation moving cars into the US through the Port of Tacoma and readying them for the April 1st launch. Ferrari, Maserati, and Alfa Romeo of Seattle as well as Alfa Tacoma reportedly have their basement garages stuffed with new Alfas, 147s, 159s, Spiders, Breras, and several 8Cs. They’re delivering them as fast as possible but with such a huge demand, customers need to have patience. Obviously those with the bucks for an 8C Competizione come first. Next up, get those GTAs out in time for the NWARC Track Day on April 15th. Alfa wants to re- establish the brand as quickly as possible and has offered generous dealer incentives toward that end. Competition between the two dealerships has never been hotter, but with only so many cars available customers can’t afford to play cute. Who knows when the next shipment might arrive or what it might contain. Everyone wants part of the action. How did this all come about? Alfa’s change of heart came from the highest ranks of Fiat. Palio Punto, Chairman of the Board at Fiat S.p.A., came to Seattle to visit Boeing. Boeing and Alitalia had been close to a deal for the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner, but things bogged down when the Italian government of the week wanted some reciprocity. Signore Punto came to Seattle to see if Fiat could get a parte della torta (piece of the pie). On the way to the Lazy B, an old tattered ‘70s Spider blew past his limo at redline, music to Palio’s ears. A few miles later Palio spotted an Alfetta. “No way,” he thought, “in Italy those all rotted years ago. When in San Francisco or LA, not an Alfa do I see. But just now in Seattle are two, and it’s been a dozen years since we sold cars here (and not many even then).” He could feel magic and money in the air. Maybe we can return Alfa to offset some of the exchange for the 787s, he mused, but how? When the Allies liberated Italy from German control they didn’t try to attack the entire country at once, but started at the toe and pushed the Germans out town by town. There lay the strategy—liberate the US from ugly German automotive domination one town at a time, starting here in Seattle where the people obviously love Alfas and still keep the faith. Once they’ve established a toehold in Seattle, Alfa could push on south to Portland. By now Palio had heard that Portland shared this same Alfa passion. From a staging base in the Northwest, Alfa could retake California. With California in hand, he concluded, the US is ours. Looking into things further, he found not one but two area dealerships still servicing Alfas and selling parts to Alfisti for their 20–30 year old cars. Great, he thought, pit them against each other. That way

Wha Hoo! Alfa Is Back!Story and photos by Al Faromeo

In a totally surprising move, Alfa Romeo has re-entered the US market—not just with the 8C Competizione but with their full model range including the 147 GTA—and Seattle/Tacoma has an exclusive. Next up, get those GTAs out in time for the NWARC Track Day on April 15th. Alfa wants to re-establish the brand as quickly as possible and has offered generous dealer incentives toward that end.

Emmo’s EquivocalEmmo’s Eh? No, I don’t know who this guy Al Faromeo is. He’s not on our club roster. He just seems to show up now and again around April 1st. You could ask Gordy Hyde, I think he might have an old phone number for him…

Well enough fun for one day. See what drivel you get when we lose our Iniezione editor? Cyndi has stepped down as editor and webmaster. We need some folks to step up and that’s no April Fool. We want to continue with our newsletter; it’s the only regular contact we have with a lot of you. If we could make better use of the web/email we’d be able to contact you in a more timely fashion, but we can’t accomplish that without someone willing to take on the task.

So far this year we’ve had well-attended events at Fred Schueddekopp’s Shop in Anacortes, Group 2, and at Dennison International and J&L. Both drivers’ schools had a great turnout. We returned to Lombardi’s for general meetings but had poor turnout. Is Lombardi’s in Issaquah the problem, or would you rather kick tires than have a sit-down? Lombardi’s has done a good job for us. The place has had a little remodeling and the food’s better than ever. Is it just too far through too much traffic? It’s very hard to find a place with a meeting room that doesn’t come with a room charge or other restrictions like a guaranteed headcount. We’d like to move around the city so if you know of a place with decent food and a back room tell Tom Mous or myself. You can email me at [email protected]. If there is someplace you’d like us to visit or some topic you’d like to know more about, let us know that as well.

While we continue to wait for new cars, we have three reasons for you to bring out one of the ones you’re hording. Hot shoes have an All-Alfa Grid on April 15th at our first 2007 Pacific Raceways track event. At the last 2006 PR date we had 17 Alfas in the Grid. Let’s top 25 this time and we’ll keep it running all season with your participation. If you or your car aren’t ready for the track, come out to watch. Or get in touch with Joe Faherty and help out by working a turn, for which we’ll buy your lunch and give you credit toward a future track event. Everyone can enjoy the MG Club’s Tulip Rallye on April 21st. We get more participation each year and everyone who goes seems to have a great time. I’ve never made it before, but this year’s my year. Last but not least, the Fiat club has an All-Italian Car Show at the Issaquah XXX Root Beer Drive-In. Their advertising poster shows a little Alfa-envy, with a GTV featured among shots of Fiat Spyders. Seems like a good chance for an impromptu drive afterwards. They all sound like a lot of fun and that’s what it’s all about.

Fall Tour—Escursione nel Memoriam Amico ZachI’m putting on a one-day tour for the club on Sunday, September 30th—mark your calendars now so you can join us! We will probably start in the Puyallup/Sumner area off Hwy 512/167, loop over White Pass for lunch in Naches and come back over Chinook Pass to have dinner in Enumclaw or Auburn. We’ll cover at least two mountain passes, experience beautiful autumn weather, pay our respects to fallen club member Zach Cox (who died in a motorcycle crash on this route), and wind down with a relaxing dinner afterwards. More details to follow!

Alfa/Vintage Grid at April 15th PR Event! The Northwest Alfa Romeo Club hosts our second annual ALFA/VINTAGE GRID at our event on April 15 at Pacific Raceways.

Get your Alfa out of hibernation! Flush the brake system with ATE Blue, bolt on that new set of coil-overs, and heat-cycle your track tires. Register with an Alfa for the April 15th track day and get a reduced registration fee, extra track time, and the pleasure of driving your Alfa in a fun environment with other ALFAS! Much more fun than hanging a finger out in the breeze while a line of Z06s leaves rubber dust all over the windshield. There will also be a few “Wheezer” pre-emissions cars out in the grid to add to the Vintage flavor. So send in your registration form (see page 6) and let us know you’ll be driving an Alfa or 1975 or older car.

It will be the inaugural track outing for “Alfie,” Dave Kingstone’s meticulously restored GTV race car. How many other Alfas can we resurrect? Last year we had 17 Alfas and over 20 in the grid, can we make it to 25? Tell all your friends who might be interested in watching or working a turn. This will be one SPECTACULAR event!

Wha Hoo! Alfa Is Back! (continued) the cars won’t sit in the showroom with huge dealer mark ups. In visiting these two businesses, Palio discovered that each had a large basement garage where they could hide cars until the launch attack. So he planned a complete surprise operative. No advertising reduced Alfa’s overhead, and besides, no marketing is needed to sell to the faithful. Alfas on the roads would shout louder than any expensive ad campaign, and only the faithful would be in the know.

From what Palio saw, he knew that Northwest Alfisti would hold tight to their new Alfas and not opt for a quick SleezeBay profit. That would be important in order to fill the streets of Seattle with Alfas and make Alfas presence known. The average American auto enthusiast must learn the Italian spirit: win with style. In Italy only first counts; if you’re second you lost and you’re soon forgotten. Even in first place, if you have no style, no one cares. Local Alfisti must have new Alfas on the track to defeat the German menace, therefore the April 1st launch to get cars out for the NWARC’s April 15th lapping day. After defeat, owners of BMWs, Audis, Mercedes, and Porsches will hide their cars in disgrace. The word will spread quickly, again negating need for advertising.

Not only did Alfa need to quietly sneak cars into Seattle/Tacoma, but Alfa needed to solve many problems very quickly. How will all those new Alfas get serviced? In such a short time with the launch moved up Alfa had no time to train US mechanics. (Not even time to teach them to put down their hammers and pick up a wrench.) After visiting Alfa Romeo of Seattle and being impressed with their facility, Palio went around the corner for lunch at Via Tribunalli. Several hours later, he looked around at the empty bottles on the table and decided that with such a fine shop to work in and afternoons at Via Tribunalli, his factory mechanics would feel right at home. He wouldn’t need to pay ridiculous bonuses to get factory mechanics to come to Seattle. Why, with the dollar so low, his mechanics would live like Silvio Berlusconi. (Though the rain did worry him some.) So with Alfas in the pipeline and factory mechanics hanging out at Via Tribunalli, is there any downside? Well in traditional Alfa fashion, for every 147 GTA that Alfa Romeo of Seattle or Alfa Tacoma sells, they must move 20 of the 1.9 JTD 147s. Don’t even ask what they need to do to sell a Spider or Brera. And don’t even think about selecting a color. Take the next car or get out of the line. So far it’s working. Long-suffering, faithful customers want anything as long as it’s not spelled Alpha Romero.

Turn Workers Needed for April 15! Sunday, April 15th is our initial Pacific Raceways lapping day, and we need turn workers.

We have an ambitious program set up this season with five PR dates: April, May, July, August, and September. Our competition program runs on volunteer labor: instructors, registration, tech, and turn workers. No volunteers, no competition program. The track fees pay for track rental, insurance, EMT, a tow truck, lunches, and purchase of track equipment such as radios, flags, fire extinguishers, cones, etc.

What do you get out of it?

You get a front row seat at a prime location. At each turn you can learn something. You can see the line, what approach good drivers take, and how they set up their exit. We move people around from morning to afternoon, so you get more than one view.

You get credit towards a future track event. Work a day with us and you can drive a day at Bremerton for free—including the drivers’ school. You can also use your credit for half off at a Pacific Raceways event.

We’ll buy your lunch. We fit lunch in somehow, and we buy.

You might make a new friend. You’ll get to know another club member better after sharing a corner.

You’ll get experience. If you haven’t done this before, we’ll match you up with someone who has.

You’ll help your club. We run an ambitious track program, which provides the bulk of our club’s financial resources.

You could get a surprise treat. VRM used us for a test and tune day prior to Monterey. Greg Whitten brought his brand new Ferrari Enzo straight from delivery to one of our events and ran it on a wet track before even R&T covered the Enzo. We don’t make any guarantees, but you never know. When it happens you don’t want to miss it.

If you’re interested contact Joe Faherty at 253-549-2082 or [email protected]. I’ll add you to my list and send you a reminder close to the event date.

Spider hardtop for saleOriginal Alfa top with original Alfa logo glass. Needs to have window re-set with a new chrome T-shaped window seal bead. From my 1974 Spider. $300 OBO. Call Greg 425-823-1177 or email [email protected]

1969 Alfa Romeo Spider for saleThe convertible top should probably be replaced. There is a broken right taillight lens. The engine had a major overhaul at 100K miles. It has an oil leak. It currently has about 170K miles on the odometer. I have had the car since it was new. I have the original owner’s manual and all the trim that is missing. New tires. Good battery. No radio, never had one. The fuel injection pump has been replaced with a 1996 model that enables it to pass the smog inspection tests. Do not use fuel with ethanol in this car. It runs much better on high octane gas. Aviation fuel works great! I was offered $5,000 for the car a few years ago—look it over and make me an offer. I have the title here at home. Needed, Tour and Club Event Organizers!By Merril Gordon

Hello everyone, Tess got buried in college work so I’ve stepped up to the plate and taken on the activities chair to coordinate events for the club. We’ve got track days lined up for the year but need members to produce events to keep the club active. Looks like we have April and September filled, but the rest of the summer is wide open. E-mail or give me a call and schedule an event for the club you’d like to put on and share.

26th Annual

LaConner Tulip Daffodil Rallye Yes, we are back!

COME ALL! – You are back for our 26th running of the LaConner Tulip Daffodil Rallye. This year we are “in search of flowers and strange animals”.

Each car club (3 car minimum) will have a First Place finish for 26th Annual LaConner Tulip Daffodil Rallye. Non-club entrants can win in “open” class. You and your navigator will enjoy spectacular scenery while touring; so don’t leave your camera behind.

This event is a gimmick rallye, where questions take the place of time/distance checkpoints, so anyone should be able to compete successfully. All you need is a sharp eye and a sense of humor. Please note – speed is not recommended! You might want to pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at the end point while the scores are being tabulated. Please fill out the form below and send it along with $12.00 U.S. or $12.00 Canadian per car to the MGCC at the address shown below. ($15.00 US or $15.00 Canadian to register the day of event.) Please remember to bring along some canned food for donation to Northwest Harvest. For more information call Ken Bottini @ (425) 883-9615. See you there! Directions: From I-5 take exit 230 and head east on Highway 20. Take a right at stoplight onto South Burlington Blvd. Take a right at next light onto Cascade Mall Drive. Go straight until you see the white MG Car Club tent, where you will check in. All rallye information and car number will be issued on the day of the rallye.

2007 Tulip RallyeBy Gordy Hyde

March Madness is over and so now maybe you’re looking for some April Appeal? Have I got an offer for you: Sign up now for the MG Car Club’s 26th Annual Tulip Rallye. That’s right, those MG maniacs have been promoting this zany rallye longer than Skagit County has sponsored the annual Tulip Festival in the Holland-like conditions of the Skagit delta.

A few years ago the MG group decided to induce intra-club bragging rights by offering a trophy for each marquee represented by more than three participants. My competitive nature kicked in and I challenged other Alfa owners to join the friendly rivalry. With some helpful partners navigating or driving, I have been successful in winning three of those cool trophies. I think the Kingstone clan has won a time or two as well. George and Susan Willet claimed last year’s trophy to put on the shelf with their earlier honors.

So what do you need to do? Registration information is on the previous page. You will be part of a huge gathering of foreign and unusual cars (255 entrants last year), and supporting a good cause (bring cans of food for Northwest Harvest). At least two things lie in wait for those who participate: 1) a good time, this year you will be “in search of flowers and strange animals”; and 2) a better chance of winning because I’ll be in Florida that week! Not to worry, the Willets and Kingstones—and others I am sure—will provide worthy competition.
