    A Mother's Example

When I think of my mom,

    especially on Mothers Day, I

recall a scene I witnessed many

    times during my childhood.1

    Late at night, just before

bedtime, my mother would sit in

a rocking chair in the darkness

with her head bowed in prayer.

When it was nippy, the glow

    from the space heater revealed

    a lovely scene that fascinated

    me.1

My bed wasnt far away, and

just before I fell asleep I oftensaw my mother praying. Her

    face was beautiful and aglow.

    She radiated holiness and

    serenity, and I was deeply

    affected.1

I never once talked to my mom

about her prayer life. I was only

17 when she died. As traumatic

as it was for me, I wonder if it

    werent a rather easy transition

for her. After all, she seemed to

live with one foot in heaven.

    Wherever You Go

    Graduations bring a commencement, or

    beginning, of new things.

In 1990, Dr. Seuss published Oh, the Places

Youll Go! This popular graduation gift tells

in Seuss inimitable style of all lifes possible

ups and downs, twists and turns. There will

surely be excitement and slumps, fun and

loneliness, purpose and confusion. And, yes,

fear: There are some [things], down the

road between hither and yon, that can scare

you so much you wont want to go on.

The sheer determination of the storybooks

life-traveler moves him beyond trouble and

fear. But Gods children dont have to go it

alone. Life cannot take us anywhere God

hasnt been first. Furthermore, he walks

beside us on every winding path and around

    every corner.

Graduates and all Christians can trust

in the promise of Joshua 1:9 (NIV): Be

strong and courageous for the LORD your

God will be with you wherever you go.

The Week at a GlanceYour Faith Can Grow

The suspension bridge over Niagara Falls was begun by a thread attached to a kite. When the wind blew, thekite floated across the water to the other side. Workers then attached a string to the thread and pulled it

across. To the string, they attached a rope and pulled it back. By this slow-but-sure method, the bridge wasbuilt.

Our faith may be just a little thread or no larger than a mustard seed, but we must act on it (see James 2:14-18). Through action, our faith will be strengthened (Colossians 1:23) as it moves us to do even greater works

of faith for our Lord (2 Thessalonians 1:3). And in this slow-but-sure way, our faith can grow exceedingly(Ephesians 4:15-16).

    An Upside-down World

    The saintly nun of Calcut-

    ta, Mother Teresa,

    thought she knew why

    the world is upside-down.

She thought it had to do

    with families that were

    out of sync, lacking to-

    getherness, harmony and

the extension of real lovefor one another. She said,

It is easier to offer food

to the hungry than to an-

    swer the lonely suffering

    of someone who lacks

    love right in ones own

    family.

    Pure Pure

    Water Love

    Please continue to give

    toward this wonderful

    ministry. Thank You!

    Condolences

She went on to say, The

    world today is upside down

    because there is so very

little love in the home and

in family life. We have no

    time for each other. Every-

body is in such a terrible

    rush, and so anxious ...

    and in the home begins

    the disruption of the peace

    of the world.

    1

    Lets make sure that we

    are showing charity in

    our own homes and

    with our family

    members.

Thanks, MomDad came home to find toys all over the living room, dirty dishes stacked in the

sink, clothes piled in the laundry room, beds unmade and kids still in theirpajamas. The house was a wreck, like nothing hed seen before.

Worried, Dad rushed upstairs to find Mom reading a book in bed.

Are you okay? he asked. What happened?

You know how you always ask what I do all day? Mom replied. Well, today I

    decided not to do it.
