Persecutionsystematic
mistreatment of a person, group or
people. The word systematic is thekey. We consider the martyrs,Christians in hostile areas or the
missionaries in far off lands to be
the only people that are persecuted.
But going by the above definition, Iwould say that Satan finds ways to
persecute all Christians. In Daniel 7:25a it reads He
shall speak pompous words againstthe Most High, shall persecute the
saints of the Most High, and shall
intend to change times and law. Inother translations it reads wear out, oppress and wear down. In 1 Peter
5:8-9 Be sober, be vigilant; be-
cause your adversary the Devilwalks about like a roaring lion,
seeking whom he may devour. Re-
sist him, steadfast in the faith,
knowing that the same sufferingsare experienced by your brother-
hood in the world. NKJV To be
sober is to be alert. Therefore, asober spirit is an alert spirit, a readyspirit and to be sober (alert) minded
is to be prepared, watchful or inother words, hey you, wake up!
I will preface the next part
by saying that I did not understand
the concept of persecution until Iexperienced more than a year of
cancer treatment. Throughout thetreatment, I have endured but Ihave had a systematic wearingdown of my body and my spirit. I
have grown weary of driving to thedoctor to be made sick so that Imight be made well. When I first
began radiation treatment, I was
told I would not have any problemsor sickness from the treatments. After a few days, though, I did get
sick and my mouth blistered somuch that I couldnt eat. I couldnt
continue through all twenty treat-ments without stopping as they hadwanted. Fortunately, the holidays
afforded me some time to heal, but
I was unable to enjoy any of myfavorite Christmas foods. My tumor
was feeling pretty bad too, so that
was a little consolation. So how does that story tie in
with persecution? Simply, persecu-
tion does not come in the same
form to everyone but it is a gradualwearing down of ones faith, ones
resolve and ones desire to serveJesus. Though most would not
agree, lets consider entertainment
as a form of persecution, sincemost of todays TV programs and
Theater movies , when allowed inour lives on a regular basis, wears
down our faith, our resolve and de-sire to serve the Lord. So then,
whether it be illness, value-
altering, mind-numbing entertain-ment or even negative family andco-workers, we must be sober, vig-
ilant, to keep our focus on God.
Godly focus will enable us to with-stand persecutions we must endure
or enable us to stand and fight.
Now I said all of this for onepurpose. We have a duty to serve
our Lord and Savior by serving oth-ers as Christ did. So we must notlet our faith and willingness beweakened by any of Satans forms
of persecution but stay strong
through seeking God. That way, wewill be able to carry out our serviceto our neighbors in this community
and to one another.Dan SchmuckerMens Ministry

The Week at a GlanceThe Role of Faith
Fear imprisons, faith liberates; fear paralyzes, faith empowers; fear disheartens, faith encour-
ages; fear sickens, faith heals; fear makes useless, faith makes serviceable and, most of all,
fear puts hopelessness at the heart of life, while faith rejoices in its God.Harry Emerson Fosdick

Deacon of the Week: Ian Bacon 434.384.3952
Perfect AttendanceThe church choir director was frustrated because at least one member was missing from each Eastercantata rehearsal. At the final rehearsal, she announced, I wish to publicly thank the tenor for being
the only choir member to attend every rehearsal.
Its the least I could do, said the tenor, since I wont be here for Easter.
Many times we are asked, Who is my
deacon?
To help you, we will list the Deacon of the
Week and his list of families in the WLBC
Bulletin ENewsletter. There will be a
complete list posted on the bulletin board near
the church office. This complete list is
alphabetical by your last name. We hope this
will help you know who your deacon is for the
year. If you have any questions, please feel free
to contact the church office.

Just before the Last Supper (John 13), Jesus took off his outer robe, poured water into a basin and began washing
his disciples feet. One disciple, however, protested having the Lord wash his feet. Jesus told the reluctant man
that unless he allowed Jesus to wash his feet, he really had no share in Christs leadership. The disciple then re-
lented. He said Jesus could wash not only his feet but his hands and head, as well.
Choose the name of this disciple from the list below:
A. Peter; B. John; C. Andrew; D. Judas
(See John 13:1-9.)
My sermon today is from First Peter, chapter
three: Wives, be subject to your husbands.
