The Beginnings of SundaySchool
Englishman Robert Raikes, born in 1735, was a Christianlayman who was pained to seeunschooled children working
six days a week in factories or
mines. On Sundays, childrenroamed the streets, often get-ting into trouble. Most didnt
know how to read or write andknew nothing about Christ or
the church.
As Raikes labored to reformEnglands prison system, henoticed that many children
were imprisoned, stirring himto action on their behalf. Hearranged for halls and homes
to be used for educational pur-poses on Sundays, the one daychildren didnt have to work.He found volunteers to teachreading, writing and math, aswell as the Bible and Christian
beliefs. The first Sunday school classwas held in July 1780. Amaz-ingly, by 1788 some 250,000children were attending suchschools. This occurred despitesome peoples opposition to
the education of lower-classchildren.
Countless boys and girls haveattended Sunday school clas-
ses since then, thanks toRaikes, who brought Christs
light and love to childrenaround the world.

Pray for the unreached people of India.
Be a lively Christian
(worth reposting, so we did)
A man once told a pastor that he want-ed to become a member of the church."But," he said, "I'm very busy, so don't
ask me to join a committee, teach aclass or sing in the choir. Spare me from
anything that would take up my time, and don't be surprised if I'm not in wor-
ship very often."The pastor thought for a moment, andthen replied, "I believe you're at the
wrong church. The church you're lookingfor is 10 blocks down the street."
The man followed the pastor's directionsand soon came to an abandoned, board-
ed-up church building. It was a deadchurch - out of business.
May each of us always be alive to theministry of the Lord's church. Remem-
ber that lively Christians make churchesthat are alive.
BIBLE QUESTION
Around 450 years before Jesus, theprophet Nehemiah heard some badnews about conditions in Jerusalem. Thecity still lay in ruins following an invasionby the Babylonian army many years be-fore. The news caused Nehemiah to sitdown and cry. After mourning for days,he felt that he should lead men to re-build the wall and gates around Jerusa-lem. He organized a work force and, de-spite some opposition, they rebuilt thewall.
A well-known verse describes the ac-complishment: So we rebuilt the wall, and all the wall was joined together tohalf its height; for the people had amind to ________.
