Knocknacarra took the lead on ten minutes and it stayed this way until the second half when Sean Connaughton slotted the ball past the home keeper to level the game. U16 Girls two from two in fast league start

Craughwell U16 girls began their season with an excellent 5-2 away win over Corrib Rangers in earlyNovember. The wintry conditions made good football difficult but United showed their steeliness byscoring two early goals from Caoimhe Reidy and Grainne McDaid. Rangers responded well and were notlong scoring two of their own to level at 2-2. However, Craughwell went in front again through theexcellent Reidy to take the half-time lead. Two second half goals for Craughwell including a long rangestrike from central defender Laura Cunningham wrapped up the points. Others to impress for Craughwellwere Andrea Tobin in midfield, Lisa Doran at left back and Ciana Reidy making some great runs at theRangers defence.

The girls made it two wins last Sunday with a 6-0 home win over local rivals Athenry. As in their first match,United started quickly with two goals from Caoimhe Reidy and Andrea Tobin. Athenry steadied their shipand matched the home side for effort up until the break. However, Craughwell gradually wore them downwith two more goals each from Grainne McDaid and Andrea Tobin completing her hatrick. Tobin andMcDaid were excellent for United all day along with notable performances from Sandra Greaney andShauna Tobin.

Shane made an impact from his first training session in this, his first seasonwith United. After trying him out in a few positions he excelled in midfield inour U18 FAI Cup win against Galway Hibs. Shane is a tenacious player withhuge energy and physical strength who simply wants the ball when theopposing team has it. When on the ball he has the physical presence to keepit and the confidence to hold it up and then pass it creatively forward. We aredelighted to have him as part of our squad and are looking forward to therest of the season!

U17s unbeaten league start produces a goal spree

The U17 boys started their League Division 1 season with an excellent 3-1 win in Westside against CorribRangers and followed up in October with a 6-0 home win over Athenry B. Gavin O'Toole scored four goalswith Daragh Gilligan and Shane Donnellan netting the other two. Two weeks later, they registered a 4-0win over Kilshanvey with a Gavin O Toole hatrick and Sean Jackson completing the scoring. They continuedtheir hot streak with a 9-2 away win over Knocknacarra. Darragh Gilligan scored a hatrick along with furthergoals from Shane Donnellan, Gavin O Toole, Tomas Mongan and a penalty from United keeper Eoin Lally.

However, their most impressive win this season so far may well have been their FAI Youth Cup preliminaryround win by 5-3 over Galway Hibs. The team were entered in the cup competition one year above theirnatural level so they can be proud of their performance against the city side. A fantastic effort from theteam with two goals from Gavin O'Toole, a net buster from Cillian McDaid and great team goals finishedby Daragh Gilligan and Dara Cunney. However, their interest in that Cup was since ended with an awaydefeat to Ballina side Conn Rangers.

Craughwell U12A squad had a great October which sees us lying second inthe Premier table and also through to the third round of the Connacht Cupafter a great 2-0 win over Oranmore/Maree B. Over the month there weremany stars but goals win games and Sean Connaughton scored four crucialgoals to help keep us up there with the best. Sean normally plays in centraldefence but as the game goes on we try to move him to midfield and this haspaid huge dividends with four stunning goals in October to bring his total tosix in seven games so far this season. This makes Sean a worthy player of themonth and we all thank him for his commitment.

Grainne plays as an attacking midfielder on the U16 team, scoring two goalsin both of United’s games this season so far. Her speed, skill and intelligentlink up play with her attacking team-mates has made this United squad apotent force going forward. Along with our combative midfielder AndreaTobin, she will be vital in bigger games to come this season. Well done Grainne.

U9 boys friendly matches v Oranmore and Cregmore

Craughwell’s U9 squad played Oranmore in a friendly match recently and with the parents also turning out inbig numbers, it was great to see that support. All the players enjoyed their first match on grass and eventhough we did find it hard going, it was very positive and we all enjoyed it. With a win, a clean sheet and adefeat – what mattered most was a bunch of positive performances from all the players.

We were looking to improve just a little with our next match against Cregmore last Saturday. I have noticedover the past few weeks that the players are performing and gelling well together. If we can continue withthis determination, then it will be good for the players confidence coming into the impending OranmoreInvitational Tournament.

A big thank you to Oranmore and Cregmore for the matches and also to Aidan Bond and Cormac O Brien forhelping to organise our teams on both days.
