What is the PAACC Framework?

Spark, Internalize, Generate

The LINC team has worked with Stanford University’s Dr. Arnetha Ball to operationalize the Model of Generative Change and make it an engine of growth and scale for 21st-century learning. Through a reflective, job-embedded approach, LINC facilitates the Spark – mindset shifts by introducing new ideas and strategies, Internalization – behavior shifts by supporting direct application in classrooms, and Generativity – culture shifts by promoting ongoing self and shared reflection and iteration.

5

6

Spark

• Teacher provides differentiated instruction/coaching to small groups

This is the beginning phase of growth. There we experience mindset shifts by introducing new ideas and strategies.

• Teacher engages the whole class in some elements of choice or decision making

• Students share ideas frequently and are accountable for discussion participation

• Students collaborate with peers to solve problems

• Students create artifacts to demonstrate academic understanding

• Teacher plans to cover material in a differentiated manner, but there is no clear use of formative data or student-centered strategies

In-Action - From Spark to Internalize: “I want to increase participation and voice equity in my class, so I decide to use the discussion feature of my Learning Management System (LMS) to engage students in role-play by having them respond to questions on the discussion board as their “character” would. This provides an equitable way for all voices to be heard.”

Spark, Internalize, Generate

Spark, Internalize, Generate

7

Internalize

This is where behavior shifts by supporting the direct application of new ideas and strategies in classrooms.

• Learning paths are different for individual students based on formative data

• Students have choice in their learning and have some control over pace, place, or sequence of learning

• Students use digital platforms which provide them audiences within the classroom

• Students use digital resources to connect and collaborate within the class or their school

• Students create artifacts to demonstrate academic understanding and real-world problem solving

• Teacher provides individual support; teacher uses formative assessment and data to plan for learning

In-Action - From Internalize to Generate: “I am a teacher who uses technology to provide opportunities for my students to collaborate with each other within the classroom and have even connected with other classes within my school. I wanted to go a step further and have my students connect with an expert in the science field. I sign up for Skype a Scientist to be matched with a scientist to video chat with my students.”

Spark, Internalize, Generate

8

Generate

This involves the shifting of culture by promoting ongoing self and shared reflection and iteration.

• Teacher conferences with students to plan together and co-create personalized pathways for each learner

• Students are engaged in making key decisions as agents of their learning

• Students use digital platforms to discuss and share with learners and experts beyond the class relevant to the task

• Students use digital resources to connect and collaborate with learners and experts beyond the class

• Students create things that matter to solve real-world problems and build skills towards their future

• Teacher and students use student data to plan; students maintain a personalized learning log or portfolio as a central form of assessment

Cycle Launch: Blended Learning - The Why and WhatReflect on the “why” that drives your teaching practice and the transition to blended learning, transform traditional learning activities, and explore blended models to understand what blended learning is.

The PAACC Framework

A New Framework

To enable a "mindset over models" mentality, we need to ensure teachers can build capacity in the hallmarks of effective blended practice. These hallmarks comprise the acronym PAACC for a quick big-picture awareness guide superseding any one particular model of blended learning.

PAACC focuses on personalization, agency, authenticity, connectivity and creativity. By aligning lessons and project units to the this framework teachers can implement a model or combination of models with the confidence that they are hitting the personalization target.

Personalization

How can you add personalization to your lesson? What is the ratio of whole group learning (same objective)to individualized? Do your students have personalized paths for their learning journeys that meet themwhere they are?

Teachers today have access to a wide array of technology to support personalized learning. Technology does not replace the teacher, but it does provide the support to allow teachers to create personalized learning experiences for students. Through personalized learning experiences, students will learn to understand themselves as learners, advocate for themselves through opportunities that allow voice and choice. Througha personalized approach such as student conferencing, teacher and students will build stronger relationships, students will be challenged, and lessons will be tailored to students needs, interests and skills.

Cycle Launch: Personalization: Station Rotation with Digital PracticeExplore digital curriculum that offers adaptive or semi-adaptive practice, then plan a rotation lesson using a template to implement a digital practice station.

The PAACC Framework

11

How can personalization be added to a lesson?

Spark:

• Use adaptive software such as Prodigy Math, Freckle, or Khan Academy. Adaptive learning software that analyzes a student’s performance in real-time and provides problems at their level.• Use Edpuzzle to assign individual videos to students to practice skills as needed. Students will have access to video anytime they need it.

Internalize:

• Use a station rotation instructional model to create small learning communities to differentiate learning for students. If you are not comfortable with a station rotation model, begin with two stations. At one station create a digital assignment or collaborative station. The other station can have the teacher working in a smaller group with half the class.• Use your Learning Management System (LMS) to assign differentiated lessons to students. Schoology allows teachers to create Grading Groups to assign personalized lessons to individuals or groups of students.

Edtech Tools Google Docs

Microsoft 365

Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as: Schoology Google Classroom Canvas

Seesaw - Students explore a variety of powerful tools (like drawing, voice recording, taking videos, and more!) to show what they know in the way that works best for them.

Edpuzzle - Choose a video, give it your magic touch and track your students' comprehension. Check if students are watching your videos, how many times they're watching each section, and if they're understanding the content.

• Students create a portfolio through tool such as Google Slides or Seesaw. Students and teacher meet to assess goals.

The PAACC Framework

13

Agency

How can you add student agency? To what extent are you offering choice and voice to foster agency? What other agency-building strategies are you using (i.e. student-led conferences, student leaders and micro-credentialing)?

Agency means the student is taking an active role in their learning. If students are sitting passively taking notes, that is not taking an active role. Student agency means giving students a voice and choice in their learning. The teacher acts as the facilitator, enabling students to understand themselves as learners and learn how to take personal action to achieve their desired goals in life. Every student deserves to learn how to have agency. Students with high levels of agency take responsibility for and ownership of their learning and build relationships with other learners who can provide mutual support.

Cycle Launch Agency: Collaborative Class ContractReflect upon current mindset around classroom agreements, technology, and responsible use. Then design an activity to collaborate with students on a class contract for increased agency in the learning environment.

The PAACC Framework

14

How can agency be added to a lesson?

Spark:

• Build student ownership of the classroom by having students co-create a classcontract with you. Leveraging student input creates buy-in from students inadhering to the agreements.

- First, ask students what ideas should be included in the contract.- Then create structures around those ideas with input from all students

by using a shared Google document or Padlet. Using these tools willallow all students to have a voice. Even the most shy students will feelcomfortable giving input.

• Create opportunities to work with small groups of students using a blendedlearning model where groups of students rotate through the “TeacherStation” to receive differentiated instruction. Once students begin tounderstand the concepts at their level, they will gain confidence in speaking up for what they need in their learning. Blended learning models includestation rotation, whole group rotation, playlists, and flipped classrooms. When students are not with the teacher, they can work on independentpractice, collaborate with their peers, or practice skills through adaptivesoftware.

• Create a screencast of yourself working through a math problem, describinghow to write a thesis statement, giving directions on a project, and uploadit to your LMS for students to have access to as needed. This will buildstudent ownership as they will soon learn there are resources to help themother than always reaching out to the teacher.

Choice Boards A choice board is a graphic organizer that allows students to choose different ways to learn about a particular concept. Design Your Own Digital Choice Board

Playlists A series of activities focused on specific content and matched to student needs. The intent of playlist-based instruction is to differentiate instruction while providing students control over various aspects of learning, including path, pace, or modality.

The PAACC Framework

15

How can agency be added to a lesson?

Internalize: • Begin by giving students choice in the classroom. Provide students with 2-3 options for demonstrating their learning. These options might include recording themselves giving a speech, creating a video in which they are walking through the steps to solve a problem, or creating a drawing that shows their understanding of a concept.

Generate:

• Use student conferences to set personal goals with students. By conferencing with students, you are able to understand their goals and how to help them reach their goals. Use a blended learning model such as a whole-group rotation or playlist to allow yourself time to conference weekly with students.

The PAACC Framework

16

Authenticity

How can you add authentic audience? Are your students regularly sharing with each other? With others beyond my classroom?

Most of the time the teacher is the only one who is looking at student work. Having an authentic audience can motivate students to create their best work, knowing that others will see their work. Sharing our work is something we do everyday. We write blog posts, we share with our Professional Learning Networks (PLN) through social media, and we ask for feedback from our colleagues and those we trust.

Cycle Launch Authenticity: Planning for Authentic AudienceExplore tools and strategies for building an authentic audience, then select a tool to try itin your class.

The PAACC Framework

17

How can authenticity be added to a lesson?

Spark • Use an LMS such as Seesaw. Seesaw is a great place to begin sharing student

work with audiences. Students can share within the classroom and with family members. Students can post their work on the LMS and receive peer feedback.

Internalize• Blogging is a good way to not only practice writing skills, but also provide

students with a real audience who can make comments on student blog posts. (Ask members of your personalized learning network (PLN) or other teachers to leave comments on their posts). Watch them light up from others noticing their work!

• In a math class, create groups of students and assign a different type of problem to the groups. Each group can then become the “expert” and willrecord the steps they used to solve the problem to share with the rest of the class. The recording can be linked to your LMS for students to access when they need it.

• Display student work in the school for parents and community members to access. Have students create a recording to talk through the displayed work. Use a quick response (QR) code to capture the recording using a QR code generator such as QR Code Generator (https://www.the-qrcode-generator.com/) to create the code. Display it on the student work and provide directions near the work for those to use a QR code reader to scan the code and listen to the student talk about their work. A QR Code Reader can be downloaded for free to any device. Here is a link to QR Code Readers for devices.

• Project-based learning (PBL) units can connect students to their communityby creating solutions for meaningful issues within the community or maybestudents are raising awareness and educating others in the community. Oneexample of a driving question for a PBL unit might be: How can we create"farm to table" at our school? Or, how can we make our school more energyefficient?

Cycle Launch Connectivity: Connectivity in LearningExplore tools and strategies to increase connectivity and collaboration within and beyond the class, then implement them in your classroom.

ConnectivityHow can you add connectivity? What does collaboration look like within your class, online and beyond the classroom? Are you leveraging technology to help connect students with global peers and experts?

How can we get students to collaborate within the classroom? How can we create opportunities for students to connect and collaborate outside the classroom? Why should teachers create opportunities for students to collaborate and connect with others? When students collaborate with others, they build upon their social skills.

Collaborative learning has been shown to build student's higher-level thinking skills as well as build their confidence and self-esteem. Students learn how to work with various types of other learners, allowing them to build upon their empathy skills as well as develop their leadership skills.

• Use your LMS to create opportunities for online discussions. First, studentsneed to know what it means to engage in discussions. Here is a discussionrubric that can be shared with students. Have them self-assess using thisrubric.

• Use a tool like Padlet to create a wall for discussion and ask that all studentssubmit to the wall. Allow students to “like” or comment on other student’sposts to create more discussion.

Internalize:

• Connect with other students within the classroom through shared Googledocs, slides, etc.

• Have students connect with other classrooms within the building througha tool such as Flipgrid. For example, World Language students studying thesame language create dialogue with each other in the language they arestudying. The teacher can then assess students on their speaking andcomprehension skills.

Edtech Tools

Flipgrid - Engage and empower every voice in your classroom or community by recording and sharing short videos. Educators create Grids and add Topics. Grids are the meeting place for your class-room, your school, your department or any learning community to discuss your Topics.
