The Tricky Business of Attracting & KeepingNew CustomersModerated by:
Iseult Devlin, President, Eastern Ski Writers
Association
Rob Megnin, Director of Sales & Marketing,
Killington, VT
Tom Meyers, Director of Marketing,
Wachusett, MA
Bill Quigley, Director of Marketing, Gunstock, NH
Brian Bossuyt, Director of Sales, Camelback, PA
> Raponda South
Attracting newcomers to skiing and snowboarding
is tricky business and keeping them is even trickier.
A key component is a strategy that includes
creative internal and external communications,
strong support from management, a positive
attitude from staff who can identify with the needs
of new customers, and a tracking formula to help
you monitor ROI. Several industry partners in
Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month/Bring a Friend
have had enormous success with this approach.
Find out what they did that worked and join in the
conversation.
Rental Boot Fitting Operations: The Most Crucial Link in the Retention Chain?Steve Cohen, CEO, Masterfit Enterprises, Inc., NY
> Raponda Central
The rental boot fit experience is a crucial but often
overlooked factor in the skier and snowboarder
retention equation. Join this veteran boot fit
expert as he shows how you can increase overall
guest satisfaction through basic boot fit training,
better staff time utilization, and enhanced guest
communication. Better fit rental boots create a
safe and rewarding environment for your guests
while ensuring skills ascension on the learning
curve.
Environmental Regulatory Compliance:Reducing the Impact on Nature and YourResort’s Bottom LineTim McGuire, Senior Project Manager, VHB, Inc.,
Burlington, VT
Dave Byrd, Director of Risk & Regulatory Affairs,
NSAA, CO
> Deerfield North
Facilities and mountain operators need to be
well-schooled about the heightened – and costly
– environmental enforcement efforts increasingly
pushed by both state and federal regulators.
Waste and pollution management, storm water
regulations, fuel storage tanks, air and soil
contamination, the complexity of environmental
regulation, and the impact on our environment
all warrant serious attention. Tim McGuire, a ski
industry compliance expert in environmental
and water regulations, will analyze recent
environmental compliance issues involving ski
areas, and recommend strategies for resorts to
promote environmental compliance and minimize
expense, using examples from past ski area
exposures.

Chris Perkins, Sales Director, PRINOTH, CA
John Glockhamer, Marketing Manager,
PistenBully, NV
> Raponda Central
This roundtable discussion for groomers, mountain
operations managers, and CFOs will analyze how
various technologies are revolutionizing grooming
and mountain operations. Moderated by NSAA’s
Jennifer Larson, this roundtable format will be
lead by ski area personnel and suppliers who
will discuss how they see technology impacting
snow surface management at resorts in the
U.S., Canada, and Europe, with a focus on GPS
systems, telemetry, vehicle fleet management, and
snow depth sensing. These technologies will soon
become the industry standard – saving resorts
labor and fuel costs, increasing productivity, and
improving operations.

The Graveyard Shift: New Best Practices for Ensuring Overnight Employee SafetySponsored by Wells Fargo Special Risks, Inc.
Dave Byrd, Director Risk & Regulatory Affairs,
NSAA, CO
Bill Snyder, Risk Management Director, Hunter
Mountain, NY
> Raponda South
With two recent deaths – both snowmakers – at
an Eastern and Western resort, with resulting
OSHA investigations from each fatality, the
industry’s practices for ensuring the safety of
our overnight crews, including snowmakers and
groomers, are under scrutiny. After an analysis
of the incident and investigation, we will unveil
some new best practices for resorts, designed
to minimize risk and improve injury response
times for our graveyard shift employees. We
will address innovative practices, PPE, and
operational considerations that will, in time,
reduce workers’ comp costs for this critical
segment of our workforce.
Tubing 2.0 – Risk Management Challengeswith Tubing OperationsTim Bruce, Loss Control Specialist, Wells Fargo
Special Risks, NH
Jesse Whitcomb, Claims Specialist, Wells Fargo
Special Risks, NH
> Deerfield South
Injuries and claims from tubing operations are
increasingly common. Over the past few years,
resorts have become increasingly sophisticated
in their understanding of construction, design,
and management of tubing parks. We will analyze
potential areas of risk, using past incidents
to illustrate key points of exposure regarding
run-outs, speed control, employee oversight,
warnings, guest rules, releases, and accident
investigations. Without the statutory protections
of ski safety acts, smarter and more effective risk
management is the best way to minimize your
resort’s exposure.

The Business Case for Climate ChangeAction and AdvocacyJudy Dorsey, Brendle Group, CO
Jon Coifman, Communications Director,
Environmental Defense Fund, NY
Margo Wade, Planning Director, Sugarbush
Resort, VT
> Deerfield North
The NSAA Climate Change Policy has long
helped guide the industry in addressing climate
change, calling for efforts on multiple fronts
including advocacy, education, science-based
solutions, and partnerships. Starting from the
perspective of industry-level advocacy, national
experts will discuss energy and climate change
regulation, the business case for climate
mitigation, and managing risk in the face of an
already changing climate. Next, participants in
NSAA’s Climate Challenge – which now includes
20 resorts from both East and West – will report
on their progress, benefits realized, and lessons
learned from addressing their own climate change
impacts.
Socially Rewarding: Travel + Leisure’s Digital Media Campaign WinnersHalley O’Brien, Producer, O’Brien Media, CO
Rich Beattie, Executive Editor, Travel + Leisure
Magazine, NY
> Raponda South
We have invited Travel + Leisure’s executive
editor to analyze the magazine’s recent SMITTY
Awards, which are presented for the best digital
and social media efforts in the travel industry.
Rich Beattie, an avid skier himself, will discuss
what makes for a distinguishing social media
campaign that rises above the digital din within
the travel and recreation industry, and what the
magazine’s outside judges liked (and disliked)
among the recent nominees. Innovation and
creativity rule the day, with this survey of
the travel industry’s most pioneering blogs,
apps, twitter feeds, contests, and the freshest
technology and media platforms.
Cracking the Retention Riddle: Killington’s Innovations on Trial & RetentionRob Megnin, Marketing & Sales Director,
Killington, VT
Dave Beckwith, Director of Snowsports,
Killington, VT
Nate Fristoe, Operations Director, RRC
Associates, CO
> Deerfield South
Growing the sport of skiing and snowboarding
will require some serious “outside the box”
strategizing, but it’s an even bigger challenge to
retain new participants. Killington has launched
an innovative program – partnering with Elan
Skis – to crack this retention riddle. Jointly
working with the resort’s marketing department
and ski school, Killington has introduced its “free
ski” initiative to re-invigorate the resort’s effort
to promote and advance the trial component
of the industry’s growth model. By leveraging
and advancing manufacturer relationships and
measuring the process and results of participants
along the way, Killington is looking to create a
relationship-based best practice that could go
viral in the industry. We’ll look at a pathway of
progress including departmental synergies, cost
strategies, analytical and metric review, and
success stories that extend beyond the snow.
The Future of Foreign Guest Workers in the U.S. Ski IndustryAnna Fincke, V.P., Work Exchange Programs,
CIEE, Maine
Matthew Lee, Managing Partner, Tocci & Lee
Immigration Law Firm, Boston, MA
Matthew Virkstis, Immigration Specialist, Office
of Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy
> Raponda Central
Unemployment dropped to 6.7 percent in
January – and that means the labor market is
forcing many ski areas to reconsider J-1 cultural
exchange visitors and H-2b foreign guest
workers. Congress, unions, and the Department
of Labor are in a tense standoff over the use
of foreign workers, so we’ve brought in some
impressive legal experts to discuss the future
Sess
ions
of these critical sources of labor. The panel
will address the latest on immigration reform
– including the new “P” Visa for ski instructors
under the Senate proposal – DOL regulatory
hurdles (including travel reimbursement and
wage methodology), lawsuits to the DOL’s latest
rules, and strategies concerning DOL and State
Department regulations.

David Gibson, President, Propeller Media, VT
Mike Chase, Director of Marketing Technology,

Mark Dorsey, Executive Director, PSIA, CO
> Raponda Central
As resorts struggle to divide their limited
marketing budgets between traditional marketing
options and the emerging choices across the
digital and social media landscape, what works to
engage and connect with the lifestyle consumer.
When and where should resorts invest in this
new technological tool shed, and what priorities
actually achieve results across other industries?
From technologies that help resorts listen to and
engage customers, to nuanced, data-mining,
emerging e-commerce applications, targeted
social media channels, and geo-smart tools
driven by the rapid growth of mobile options –
we promise this open format discussion will be
enlightening for all.
Profiting from Sustainability: Economics,Efficiency, & Investor PerspectivesJudy Dorsey, Brendle Group, CO
Dave Belin, RRC Associates, CO
> Deerfield North
Rich with profit-driving ideas and case studies,
presenters will focus on how sustainability
– from the perspectives of energy and water
management, waste, fleet vehicles, procurement
and other topics – can help drive bottom-
line savings as well as top-line growth, while
also impacting balance sheets and economic
indicators industry-wide. Speakers will also share
investor perspectives on sustainability in the ski
industry, such as integrating sustainability into
overall financial performance modeling.
The Revolution in Mountain Radio DispatchTechnologyJohn Hammond, Vice President, Mountain
Operations, Sugarbush, VT
Dave Byrd, Director of Risk & Regulatory Affairs,
NSAA, CO
> Raponda South
Sugarbush Resort in Vermont and Winter Park
in Colorado are on the cutting edge of new
mountain radio dispatch systems and handheld
radio units that will become the new standard
for the industry. While each resort is using
separate GPS-tracking technologies, both offer
amazing new benefits for mountain operations,
ski patrol, risk management, and guest and
employee safety. Both technologies will provide
sizeable returns on the resorts’ investments.
The efficiencies created by these new systems
will dramatically expand the resorts’ abilities to
analyze operational practices, control costs, and
promote safety.
Uphill Traffic: Balancing Guest Expectationsand Risk ManagementSponsored by Wells Fargo Special Risks, Inc.
Geraldine Link, Director of Public Policy, NSAA
Tom Aicher, Cleary Shahi & Aicher, VT
Tim Bruce, Loss Control Specialist, Wells Fargo
Special Risks, Inc., NH
> Deerfield South
This panel discussion will examine the pros and
cons of uphill traffic at Eastern resorts, with an
emphasis on balancing guest expectations and
risk management. We will assess the public
land versus private land considerations, legal
protections from recreational statutes, charging
fees, the value of releases, closures, warnings,
policing, patrol responsibilities, employee
safety, and even policies involving pets! We will
also circulate uphill traffic policies from both
Eastern and Western resorts. Can resorts satisfy
the expectations of locals and guests while
minimizing risk, and capitalize on this burgeoning
trend? Patrol, mountain operations, and risk
managers should attend.

Strategies for Implementing Terrain-BasedLearning with Generation Z
Joe Hession, President, Snow Operating, CO
> Raponda Central
Ski and snowboard instruction needs to
rapidly adapt to the realities of an entirely new
demographic. As the industry embraces Terrain-
Based Learning to reinvigorate our approaches to
conversion, Joe Hession, who is at the forefront
of the TBL movement, will analyze successful
strategies that resorts are using to connect with,
and convert, the tech-obsessed, multi-tasking
Generation Z, with their infamously short attention
spans. This isn’t your father’s ski lesson anymore.
The Forecast for 2013/14Sponsored by ACTIVE Network
Nate Fristoe, Operations Director, RRC
Associates, CO
> Deerfield South
At NSAA’s national convention in Palm Springs,
we unveiled version 2.0 of the industry’s Growth
Model, as we face significant challenges from the
country’s demographic transition. This will be the
first opportunity to revisit the Model and assess
initial results from the 2013/14 season. Are the
promising pre-season economic numbers playing
out as hoped? We’ll analyze where we may
stand by season’s end in terms of visitation, with
an emphasis on evaluating the industry’s goals
regarding trial and conversion.
HR Spotlight: Drug Testing and Background ChecksSponsored by Wells Fargo Special Risks, Inc.
Dave Byrd, Director of Risk & Regulatory Affairs,
NSAA, CO
Andrew Maass, Partner, Ryan, Smith & Carbine,
Rutland, VT
> Raponda South
Two perennial issues impacting ski areas and
their human resources departments are drug
testing and background checks. We will drill
down on some of the common issues related to
both topics, including testing protocols and the
pros and cons of pre-employment drug testing,
post-incident testing, or randomized tests. What
is the impact of employee drug testing if a guest
is injured? With New York recently becoming
the 20th state to allow medical marijuana – not
to mention Colorado and Washington’s outright
legalization – this issue is not going away. While
related, we will also examine what resorts should
be doing on employment background checks,
and where resorts may face exposure – including
issues of how far back resorts should check,
which jurisdictions searched, and so on. Our
goal is to encourage resorts to share their own
practices and insights.
Building for a Better Future: ContinuousEnergy Improvements for Ski Area BuildingsMike Leonard, Consultant, Vermont Efficiency
Investment Corp., VT
George Lawrence, Consultant, Vermont
Efficiency Investment Corp., VT
> Deerfield North
Believe it or not, buildings and structures in
the United States constitute the largest source
of emissions in the atmosphere from a climate
change perspective. Two experts from Vermont
Energy investment Corporation (VEIC), a non-
profit consulting firm that administers energy
efficiency and sustainable energy utilities in
Vermont, Ohio, and Washington DC, will hone in
on ways resorts can better manage energy use
to continuously improve energy performance
in ski resort buildings – base lodges, condos,
resort restaurants and all aspects of mountain
operations. There will be an emphasis on
applying the proper management framework
to enable your resort’ staff to set goals, identify
opportunities, and make changes to save energy.
