Introduction

What is this resource?

Dw i’n Darllen is all about developing confidence in the inexperienced reader. Literally, itdeclares, “I’m Reading!” The resource is made up of very short books that can be read ina single sitting. Each story is only 8 pages long, and there are only a few short sentenceson every page. Words and patterns of words are repeated through each book, so eachone is designed to ensure success on the part of the reader. As all teachers know, a senseof achievement is vital in the early stages of reading.

What’s in ‘the box’?

There are 65 books, a sequence of stories on each of the following themes:Sea Creatures (10 books)The Farm (15 books)Toys (20 books)Pirates (20 books)

Why so many?

The principle here is establishing expertise before attempting progression. The child canread a whole pile of books which are manageable, rather than moving on too soon tolevels that will be more difficult – and possibly too difficult if broached before confidence isacquired. Having 65 in the box means that a whole year group can have books on thesame theme, taking them home for reading practice.

How is this box different from Dw i’n Darllen : Bocs Un?

The main difference is that the publishers have heard what teachers have fed back aboutthe usefulness of this material to children who are learning Welsh as a second language. Many schools have established a practice of sending a Welsh reading book home with thechildren as well as an English one. For this reason, a full translation of the sentences usedin the story appears at the back of each book – Help for Parents who are also learningWelsh.

Translations – for teachers for whom teaching Welsh is still new

The purpose of this leaflet in English is to ensure that teachers are entirely comfortablewith content and familiar with the patterns of language used. A full translation is providedas a safety net – with apologies to everyone who needs to check only a few unfamiliarwords. The approach in this leaflet is truly a Belt and Braces one!

Welsh across the curriculum

Activities which are linked to other areas of the curriculum are listed overleaf. They wereoriginally compiled by the author of the books, Gwenfron Hughes, as a result of her ownwork in the classroom. A selection has been made for this leaflet, with the emphasis onwhere Welsh might be used most naturally.

The author

Gwenfron Hughes teaches Key Stage One in a rural school in Denbighshire. She wasactutely aware of the shortage of material at the plateau where many children need toexperience success at reading and gain in confidence. She realised that many childrenhad difficulty with basic patterns such as ‘Mae . . . yn’, ‘dyma’ and so on, and even moredifficulty with the negative forms. The stories were devised, therefore, around theseelementary patterns and deliberately depend on repetition.

North Wales/ South Wales variations

Because so many children will go on to become proficient readers in two languages, it isimportant that they encounter the slightly different forms which are used in the North andSouth of Wales. ‘Mae e’ or ‘Mae o’? For consistency, the south Wales version is usedthroughout the books in The Farm, for example, while the North Wales form appearsthroughout the stories in Pirates. This can be fun to discuss with the pupils as they willquickly attempt to mimic accents.

Involving parents and other reading partners

Because each story is only 8 pages long and is based on such a short text, these booksare ideal for listening to a child read. If the listener is not a Welsh speaker, the translationat the back of each book would be a good talking point for adult and child as well.

Would the first box / Bocs Un be useful too?

Having another 4 themes would provide a wider variety of books. Bocs Un contains thefollowing themes: The Circus, Machines, Dinosaurs, The Garden. The patterns used willbe familiar to those already using Bocs Dau. (Please note that in these books, notranslation is printed at the back of the individual books, so they are not so well-suited tosending home with the children for practice with non-Welsh speaking parents.)

Good Luck with teaching Welsh! Pob Lwc gyda dysgu’r Gymraeg!
