Program Notes:

Since the earliest days of film, music has been a key element in creating moods and

setting the scene. As a result, certain types of music now evoke images and scenes by

themselves. And so it is with Chase At Midnight.

Fast paced music punctuated with percussive hits suggests a chase scene, and what could

be a better time to create suspense and drama than to have the chase in the middle of the

night?

Of course, you need a respite, a brief moment to catch your breath and hope that you

have shaken off your pursuer, but then the chase is on again...

Rehearsal Notes:

Ensure that the opening of this piece is fast! (It’s a chase after all). It’s all about energy

in this section. The metronome marking of 180+ should be treated as a minimum with the

emphasis on the “+”. It works much better at a tempo of somewhere between 200 and

220 and conducted with a “one in a bar” feel.

The contrasting middle section is then approximately one third of the tempo of the

opening. The key focus here is playing long, legato melodic lines over rich, warm

sustained background chords.

The section which starts at [75] builds through the addition of extra layers and through an

increase in dynamics. Be sure not to get too big too early.

About the Composer:

Tim is an established writer for both Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble. He is passionate

about writing fresh and interesting original works for junior level ensembles. His Concert

Band works have featured on festival lists around Australia, receiving international

recognition at The Midwest Clinic – An International Band and Orchestra Conference in

Chicago. His solo works also feature on the AMEB syllabus.

Tim holds a Bachelor of Education (Melbourne), a Masters degree in Jazz Composition

and Arranging (ANU), and a Masters Certificate in Composition for Film & TV

(Berklee).

In addition to his work as a composer, Tim has been a brass teacher and ensemble

director at both primary and secondary school levels for nearly 20 years. He is also in

demand as a clinician and adjudicator.

He currently lives in Melbourne with his wife and three young children.
