Program Notes: A cover drive is a particularly elegant cricket shot. A good one will pierce the field and run away for four runs.

Performance Notes: Cover Drive is a combination of the 12/8 shuffle and the Afro-Cuban 12/8 groove. The drum and percussion parts are a suggestion of how to reflect this, but

player interpretation is encouraged. As long it has lots of energy and is as together as possible. Everybody in the band needs to lock into groove to make the

chart really pop, and catch any accents to bring out the syncopations in the melody.

The melody should be led by the electric guitar and a slightly dirty sound is encouraged but not essential. It could be considered a guitar feature.

There are two moments of silence which can be very effective. Please try to catch them. [116] and the end of [123].

Soloists are encouraged to lock into the groove in their solos and to not be tempted to play semiquavers (sixteenth notes) against the triplet groove more than

just occasionally. In the solo section at [81] a conversational duet is encouraged though a solo, trio or quartet or more is fine too. By conversational, the

players should interact like they are having a conversation and are never ignoring what each other is playing. The backing chords in the horns can build a lot

towards the end so the soloists are almost swamped in the last few bars before the cue to go on.

About the Composer:

Taking up the alto saxophone aged twelve, Lachlan went on to graduate with distinction from The Victorian College of the Arts in 1983. Performing solos

five times with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, he performs with The Australian Art Orchestra and the Daryl McKenzie Jazz Orchestra, and in many

television (Dancing with the stars/Australia-all 15 seasons) and concert performances (Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, John Farnham, George Benson), also on

many CD’s and films. He was chief arranger for “Dancing with the Stars” and orchestrates for Big-bands and Orchestras etc. (MSO, SSO, film, T.V. and

many schools).

He currently works at Caulfield Grammar School in the jazz department and as resident composer/arranger, teaching saxophone and composition at Monash

University and directing the Monash University Saxophone Big Band (Saxband). His published compositions include music for big-band, solo saxophone and

other woodwinds, saxophone quartet and songs. He has been commissioned to compose for orchestra and various mixed ensembles plus several musicals.

Lachlan loves creating and performing music. Lachlan is also a Mini Quest Catamaran Champion and can juggle four balls at once.
