Annan Activity Group Fantastic Art
Reece has been coming to our activity group since it started last October and following from the various activities we’ve had each month i.e. baking, card making and arts and crafts Reece has been inspired to carry on with these activities at home and has even experimented on new craft pieces the group hasn’t tried yet which he hopes he will be able to bring to the group in the future. Susan Thompson
Annan activity group enjoyed having Sylvie Kruz , Professional Artist with Dumfries Art group down for two sessions this last quarter. Here we have Reece showing off his splendid water colour piece that takes pride of place in his home after getting it framed. Reece really enjoyed learning the process of painting by a professional and feels he couldn’t have achieved this without the right support and guidance from Sylvie. He really enjoyed this activity and it’s been his best piece so far. A big thank you from the group to Sylvie we know how busy she was and we hope you can come back in the near future.

Spa Afternoon at Dumfries College – 30th March 2017
Shona Taylor, our HNC Student, recently organised a Spa afternoon at her college for two of our service users. This
activity was planned and carried out as part of the work required to achieve Shona’s HNC Graded Unit and will count
towards her final grade. The service users enjoyed a manicure and pedicure with gel nail polish; both ladies
thoroughly enjoy the experience.
The College Salon is modern and well equipped following a refurbishment in 2016 and is set in a relaxing
environment, with calming spa music playing in the background. The atmosphere within the Salon is one which you
would expect from a professional Beauty House. Students are fully trained prior to carrying out any treatment and
are discreetly supervised by a Beauty Lecturer. On the day of the activity, the Beauty Students carrying out the
manicure and pedicure were also being assessed as part of finalising their course modules so our attendance gave
them the opportunity to put their skills to good use also.
The treatments available range from facials and massage to waxing and make up application, and are very
reasonably priced, a price list is available for those interested in treating themselves to a little bit of pampering and
it is hoped that a further visit to the Salon with service users will take place again.
In the meantime, Shona would like to thank the two ladies for their time and willingness on the day and is grateful
to them both for their support.
Power of Attorney/Guardianship
Could any of our Service users who have a Power of Attorney or Guardianship please let us know. We have been
asked by our Head Office to keep a record of this information; we would appreciate it if you could inform us if this is
relevant to you.
Support Workers will also ask for this information. If you have any queries regarding this please get in touch. Thank-
you

Farewell to Shona – 31st May 2017
On the 31st May, at Queen of the South Arena Lunch Club, we said a fond farewell to Shona Taylor, our HNC Student who spent her student placement with us, shadowing support workers and gaining valuable experience working with Service Users. Shona was a pleasure to work with and is moving on to begin a degree in Mental Health Nursing at UWS. We wish her all the very best for the future. Good Luck with your future studies Shona, and enjoy your summer off!

Young person’s Group – 12th June 2017
The Young Persons Group had a chilled out time at Summerhill Community Centre, where they played
dominoes and boccia and had a few beauty treaments, including nails and massage courtesy of Maria at
Serenity Beauty Salon. They then had lunch before heading home. Thank you so much to Maria for coming
and helping us on the day.

Outdoor Bowling – 20th June 2017
On 20th June 2017 we enjoyed outdoor bowling at Heathhall with a group of service users all males so come
on girls give it a try next time -4th July and 18th July.
Due to the intense heat and sunshine we experienced on that day everyone tired quickly and needed a
break to sit down and rehydrate with drinks of water and rest as you can see by our photograph, staff and
service users were the same as there’s not much shade to find on the bowling green. Karen Pirrie
Wigtownshire News & Events
Welcome to Stuart
As we have recently had a staff change in this area, the coffee clubs, lunch clubs and activities have been on hold until Stuart was in place.
Now that Stuart has taken up the mantle of Support Worker for this area Coffee Groups are beginning again – please have a look at our ‘Regular Activities’ page.
If you have any ideas on other activities you would like to do within this area let Stuart or the office know and we can look into what’s available.
Stuart Black is our new Support Worker for the Stewartry and
Wigtownshire part of the region. Stuart joined us on the 22nd
May and has been busy with induction training and meeting
service users. We here at Capability Scotland Dumfries &
Galloway look forward to working with him.
A welcome message from Stuart: -
‘Hi there, I am Stuart Black. I have recently taken up the post
of Support Worker in Stewatry and Wigtonshire. To give you
a little bit of information about myself, my career has always
been within health and social care services, working in
mental health and learning disability facilities. Prior to this I
was a student at the University of Glasgow, undertaking my
degree at the Crichton Campus. I am an avid reader; I can
appreciate a decent novel. I also enjoy movies, music and art.
However my passion is cycling which takes me to some
amazing parts of the UK and hopefully further afield in the
future.
I am honoured to be part of the team and look forward to
meeting you all in the very near future.

Activity Group - 3rd May 2017
Annan Lunch Club - 25th May 2017
Lockerbie Coffee Group
On Wednesday 3rd May the Annan activity
group had a fun day, which consisted of the
group playing Boccia, Crossbow, Card Bingo,
Dominoes etc. The group had a laugh and
thoroughly enjoyed the change of activity.
The entire group ended up being really
competitive while playing prize card bingo,
trying to guess what was in the parcels as a
prize.

Annan lunch club enjoy lunch and banter on the last Thursday of each month. In the photo we have Janice Limb (left) showing off her framed Zen peacock colouring masterpiece that she had brought in to show the group, this is an activity she continues to enjoy doing at home in her spare time. Zen is a no age limit art therapy anti-stress colouring book activity that has been carefully crafted with free flowing lines, swirls in intricate patterns so that you can create something exceptionally stunning.

The Lockerbie coffee group is going very well. The group consists of approximately six people, current and former service users, who have met up several times now. It’s an informal time, sometimes it’s just about getting out for an hour or so getting some company, a change of routine and enjoying a bit of banter. There are lots of discussions, debates and putting the world to rights, we have plenty of laughs too over a leisurely cuppa or two. We have recently been joined by the MS Society in a joint venture to hopefully widen their area of support into Lockerbie and engage with others who have MS. Malcolm Wearing has taken over the role from Les Bostock and came to our meeting on Wednesday 24th May, where he met up with service users with MS and was able to discuss their specific health conditions relating to MS, share their experiences, knowledge, medications, limitations and coping mechanisms. Holiday Season
Now is the time of year that we all start thinking about our holidays, or we go away somewhere nice and
sunny to relax and unwind. Whether you are thinking of a UK break, somewhere abroad, or even a cruise,
http://www.disabledholidays.com may have just the holiday, information or guidance you are looking
for.
Short Break Fund Short breaks for carers are available through the
Short Breaks Fund. Funding is provided by Shared
Care Scotland and through the Carers Information
Strategy.
The Fund is open to creative ideas on how a short
break is interpreted, be it a holiday away, a shed for
the garden, an exercise class or even a gym
membership are some examples. The Fund will look
at each application as long as it demonstrates a
clear positive outcome for the carer.
