Nearly every seat was takenin the Ecclesbourne SchoolHall on Friday 17th Marchfor a full programme ofmusic, drama, comedy anddance by local residents andgroups that had beenbrought together by Bertand June McCoy, writesDerek Cook .Among the 60 or more artisteswho appeared in the 28 eventsin the Programme were theDuffield Singers, the PamSmith Tap Group, theDerwent Valley Wind Bandand members of CumberhillsW.I. It would be invidious to singleout individual performancesbut the biggest laugh wasraised by the antics of theFour Belles namely PennyEdwards, Helen Varin, AlisonBarratt and Dawn Narboroughperforming the ‘JimmyBrown’ song.
Other highlights werevirtuoso performances on theHurdy Gurdy by Mike Hutleyand on the piano by BeateToyka. All proceeds from the Concertare to be donated to the MidasFund. It was an excellent evening oflive variety performances thatonce again demonstrated thewealth of talent to be found inDuffield and I am sure that allthose who did attend arehoping that the McCoys willbe encouraged to offer us asimilar show in the future.Congratulations to all.

GARDEN SHED SECURITY IS ESSENTIALMay I begin this month byapologising to anyone whohas tried to find the ruralvan. Despite my best effortsto obtain information it hasproved to be a little difficult -at times it’s like trying to getblood out of a stone!. OnFebruary 27th the officermanning the van had to beelsewhere and unfortunatelythis may happen from time totime. The van is due to be in theMedical Practice – not theideal setting as I was hopingfor a more ‘visible’ location.Unfortunately there are nofixed times just Sundaymornings. As there is onlyone officer available onSunday mornings there willnot be an officer to go out onfoot patrol. The van is due to be nextparked-up on 3rd April, thentwo weeks break and thenApril 24th, May 1st twoweeks break etc. but may besubject to change.
I have my own views on theusefulness of this and in anycase it will be reviewed in afew months time. I wouldwelcome any comments.Your child and internet chatrooms:I recently received someinformation from Belper PCLaura Sisson regardingkeeping your child safe whenusing internet chat-rooms.Rather than reiterate it in thisarticle, I have listed thewebsites to which theinformation points which are:www.chatdanger.comwww.kidsmart.org,ukwww.childnet-int.orgIf anyone is interested in thesheet Laura produced thenplease let me know.Shed and garage securityadvice:At this time of year there isoften an increase of shed andgarage burglaries. Althoughwe tend to consider securityfor our homes with alarms, locks and chains, sheds and
garages can often beoverlooked, but consideringthe price of garden tools andmowers, it is worthwhilespending a little on securitynow to potentially savepounds and heartache later. Some ideas to keep yourproperty secure: Try to make all perimeterfences, walls and gates of auniform height, and make surethere are no climbing aidsnearby.Put trellis on top of walls andfences, it will not bear muchweight and thus make a noise ifbroken and will supportclimbing plants - preferably of athorny variety. Hedges andbushes should be cut back, forbetter surveillanceMake sure sheds and garagesare in a good state of repairFit at least two good closeneck padlocks (close neckmeans harder to bolt crop)Secure all hinges, hasps andstaples with coach bolts andback plates
Laminate windows or havegrills or wire mesh fixed, pluscurtains to obscure contentsScrew down shed or garagewindows if it is not necessaryto open themCode items such as mowersand strimmers and note allserial numbersFix a secure anchor pointinside your shed and chainvaluable items togetherRemember tools, includingladders, from sheds or garagescan be used to break into yourhome. Our Crime Reduction Officer,Nigel Coulstock (01773571875) is willing to visit youto discuss security.

The village has a stylish newaddition to its array ofbusinesses with the openingof Pure Home Interiors, above Anthurium florists inTown Street.Having studied interiordesign and written aboutinteriors for nationalmagazines for many years, proprietor Ruth Eley hasfound herself taking a morehands-on approach to her love
of design and interiordecoration. She has refurbished three ofher own homes and helpedfriends and family to do thesame over the years, but shesays it’s the listening skillsher journalistic backgroundhas given her that will be hergreatest asset with her newventure.“I don’t want to go intopeople’s homes and tell them
what to have, or to dictate thelatest interior design trend, Iam more interested in helpingpeople work out what theyreally love and want to livewith.“Sometimes it doesn’t takevery much to transform orfreshen up a room. Competition for placesamong a squad of at least 13players gives new skipperAdam Short the hope thatthis will be a season ofconsolidation after theflirtation with relegationfrom Division One lastsummer. On paper the batting looks tohave plenty of depth with astrong top order and useful allround strength to follow.New professional from NewZealand, Ant Harris, abatsman/wicket keeper will bein the top three withnewcomer Paul Bakel and
experienced Dave Halliday.Ed Sims, Johal Balraj, PhilipJordan, Phil Jones, RussellKing, Adam Short, RussellKing Saranya Madina andMark Antill will be vying formiddle and lower order placeswith slow medium bowlerRichard Jordan and left armquickie Phil Cheetham likelyat 10 and 11.The bowling seems strongerwith Cheetham and PhilipJordan the likely new ballpairing, Madina, RichardJordan , Short and Antillproviding a variety of swingand seam and Sims (off spin)
and Balraj (left arm) lookingafter the slow stuff. One or two more players whohave expressed an interest tojoin may push for a place inthe first team squad and one ortwo of the younger playersmay break through. The 1st XI will soon get anindication of how they willfare as, after a friendly withClay Cross at Eyes Meadowon April 22nd, they are athome for the start of theLeague season against Sawleyand Long Eaton who were inthe Premier League lastsummer.
