Dubbo South Public School Respect, Care, Cooperation & Responsibility From Sharon’s Desk Congratulaons and enjoy your new chapters Dina Moore (Aboriginal Educaon Officer); Camille Fearne (Administraon and Library) and Karen Galante (Student Learning Support Officer). A great morning tea was held for those leaving and to congratulate and present Dina Moore with her Rerement Medal. It has always a great privilege for our students and staff to have you as a part of the South team. Avid Workshops for staff are being held over the last 2 days. These workshops will see some staff parcipate in AVID strategies: WHY? WICOR Strategies; MYER Maths and AVID Leadership across school to ensure we are keeping AVID strategies for all Kinder to Year 6 embedded across our learning programs. AVID strategies enable us to further support our students in experiencing success with learning. AVID strategies are across both Delroy and South Campuses for our students moving into Year 7. Correct School Uniform was discussed at Stage 3 Assembly yesterday. It has been noced that as the year progresses students are beginning to show creave changes in uniform and also in atude and expectaons at school. School Uniform is to be worn by all students at all mes, it is inclusive for all, looking the same and cung out compeon. Recently a number of Year 6 students have begun wearing hats that have been exclusive to most students. I endorse and encourage all students to wear a hat to school as we now are geng into warmer weather, however, that would be the school cap or bucket hat. These hats are very affordable and available from school. Recently a range of coloured bucket hats, donuts, ducks etc have been worn by Year 6 students. I have agreed to these students wearing these on Fridays only when Western sports gear is allowed. I would appreciate, if you could ensure your children are wearing the correct uniform every day, especially our SRC members who are role models and leaders for our school. DOE Behaviour Strategy is sll in draſt form and the Department are seeking feedback on the strategies and reforms. Please have a look on www.edu.nsw.gov.au and provide feedback by Friday 25th September. The reform document will have repercussions for our schools especially around the management of suspensions. Thank you to all of our parents and community throughout the term who have followed school requests for drop off and pick up and physically distancing. It has been a challenging year and we have been thrown many curve balls. Thanks for your support and understanding. I will keep you up to date with any new changes moving into Term 4 with updates on Year 6 Farewell, Presentaon Assemblies etc. We will work together to ensure our Year 6 will have a fabulous farewell event and memories along with all of our students, a very posive end to the year. Kinder Enrolments are being taken. Please spread the word and if you have another child due to start school in 2021, please drop in and pick up a package. The transion program will look very different this year with the school making a virtual tour video and small videos for uploading, to provide potenal parents with all informaon on topics of uniform, key people across the school, healthy lunches and our P&C. Year 6 to 7 Transion will also be different this year. At this me, we have some visits from the High School Campuses at South to discuss different topics. Some of our more vulnerable students will be vising campuses to meet key people etc. All parents were provided with an online link and arcles for informaon for Year 7 2021. Hopefully a one day mini lesson, transion and BBQ maybe on offer if allowed in term 4. We will keep you informed. It has been noticed that as the year progresses students are beginning to show creative changes in uniform and also in attitude and expectations at school. School Uniform is to be worn by all students at all times, it is inclusive for all, looking the same and cutting out competition. Recently a number of Year 6 students have begun wearing hats that have been exclusive to most students. Monday 12th October First day of Term 4

Explore Australia Written for early readers, this new series allows children to explore Australia without leaving home. There are six books in the series. Available now in our school library.

Spring has sprung Our latest display in the library includes books about spring, seasons, animals, gardening and outdoor activities. Kinder Blue and lunch time visitors have been busy colouring flowers to decorate Liz’s latest display. We still have some pictures to finish. Spring is a great time to enjoy time outside. Check out books of things to make and do ready for the school holidays.

Chess Using Book Club reward points we purchased 3 small chess sets. These are very popular at lunch. There has been a lot of teaching happening among students. Enjoy your week, Sue Buttrey Teacher Librarian

ICaN News Congratulations to our boys who received their ICaN shirts yesterday at the Stage 3 assembly. These shirts are something for the boys to work towards throughout the year by following the PBL rules as well as the ICaN Rules which are respect, manners, attitude and good vibes. Usually the boys receive their shirts in Term 4 but due to the outstanding effort this year they received them early. It’s great to see all of the students improving in their own way and growing into leaders and role models. Just a reminder for parents, the boys are able to wear their shirts to school on a Friday.

Teaching and Learning Tales - Ms Trish Wales 1/2T Teaching is proudly in Ms Trish Wales’ blood. “I always wanted to be a teacher. My greatest inspiration to teach was my mother as she was a primary school teacher,” she said. Whilst her mother inspired her career choice, Ms Wales also reflects on the powerful impact Miss Kelly and Mr Hawke, among other teachers, had throughout her schooling. “These amazing educators taught me to always be the best you can. This has been my mantra for all students I have had the pleasure of teaching over the years.” Ms Wales grew up in Tullamore and was the youngest of 4 children. She attended Tullamore Central School in her primary years before boarding at Parkes Hostel to attend Parkes High School. Ms Wales gained a scholarship to study Primary Teaching at Riverina College of Advanced Education in Wagga. “Our year was the first non-bonded teaching scholarships so the Department wasn’t compelled to employ us,” she recalled. “So, after graduating from college, I worked in the Commonwealth Bank in Sydney for the first 12 months then returned to Tullamore Central School as a full-time casual. I received a permanent position at Tullamore then transferred to Tottenham Central School.” Ms Wales decided to transfer to St Ives Public School in Sydney. When that school was closed, she followed most of her students to Davidson Park Public School, also in St Ives. It was in 1993 that Ms Wales moved to Dubbo and began working permanently here at Dubbo South Public School. “Teaching is a very fulfilling occupation and I’ve never been able to see myself doing anything else.” Ms Wales’ beautifully decorated classroom is a place of high expectations. Challenge and support are offered in equal proportions. Ms Wales is an expert practitioner in ensuring it is the students who are doing the thinking in learning time. Her questioning skills and feedback cues encourage students to strive higher in their learning. Ms Wales’ patient, kind and caring professionalism is clearly observed when she is explaining concepts in a joyful and dynamic manner. “I enjoy teaching all subjects but I’m particularly passionate about maths. Seeing students’ faces light up when they say ‘oh, I get it now’ and then being able to explain the strategy they used to solve problems, is so inspiring.” “To know that I have helped mould little minds in some way makes my job extremely satisfying.”

Student Voices: Patrick Maher, 7 years – “I like being in Ms Wales’ class. She teaches me lots about handwriting and story writing.” Sophie Troy, 7 years – “Ms Wales is nice and she always helps me.” Sahraya Poulson-Jones, 7 years – “I love learning Maths with Ms Wales. She has helped me with number sentences.” Dinuki Herath Pathirathnage, 6 years – “Ms Wales makes learning fun.” Olivia Lowther, 6 years – “Ms Wales is great at teaching maths.” Peri Ferres, 7 years – “Ms Wales helps me learn to spell.” Ashton Jones, 8 years – “Ms Wales teaches me about my brain and helps me to make mine grow.”

Let’s Make a Difference - Operation Christmas Child It’s that time of year again where we can make a huge difference to another child’s life. Operation Christmas Child involves packing a shoe box full of wonderful and useful surprises for a child in need. It is a wonderful project to do with your own children to teach the important lesson of thinking of others as well as appreciating and valuing the life we have. To fill a box with gifts consider these categories: something to love, something to wear, something for school, something for hygiene and something to play with. Ideas include: T-shirts, thongs, washers, soap, toothbrush, coloured pencils, lead pencils, note pads, exercise books, match box cars, balloons, stickers, hairbrush, comb, tennis balls, plastic cups, soft toy (something to love). All items need to be brand new. Please remember no liquids such as shampoo, toothpaste, body wash or glue as these can either leak or melt and end up ruining the contents of the gift. With the school holidays coming up it would be a very worthwhile activity to do with so many learning opportunities. If you can’t manage a whole box, maybe think about donating a few items to be combined with other donations. Mrs Prince is currently coordinating donations. Boxes are available from the top office or Mrs Prince.

Michaela Ross ready with her gorgeous Christmas box for a girl in need. Love having people in our school that think of others.

In Stage 1, Year 2 teachers have been working hard at collaborating together with Instructional Leaders to evolve our Literacy programs. We are excited about working with them to continue our journey on improving learning targets. Our team of teachers have created a Literacy program based on the books Koala written by Claire Saxby and Sylvia written by Christine Sharp. Using these rich texts, students will be taken on a journey, discovering verbs along the way. We have also included opportunities to introduce WICOR strategies into our Stage 1 classrooms, in preparation for Stage 2 and 3. Written by Hannah Watt
