Reading Aloud: So, did you

manage to share some different texts/types of reading with your chil-dren? It is extremely important that children see you model frequent reading. Reading a recipe, instructions or a shopping list are all examples of reading.

We shared some lovely picture books in the library with all ages. Some senior students still thought that [picture books were for little kids. Stage 3 classes were treated to A boy called Banjo. A story about the life of Banjo Patterson and how he became a poet and writer. The illustrations showed Australian icons and activities in the backyard. A great story to help students learn about a notable Australian.

Book Club: Thank you to Jacky and Emma who count-

ed and ordered book club on Friday.

Books should be back at school by Friday this week. In Term 4 there will only be one book club due to our book fair. The book fair will not be as extensive as the one earlier this year. There will be boxes of books to select from. More details at the beginning of next term.

Book Week Lunch: 29 students

enjoyed pizza for lunch last Friday. It was very pleasant sitting out in the OLGA with a respectful and happy group of children. Enjoy your week.

Jump Rope for Heart Please start collecting your jump rope for

heart sponsorship forms and money. All

money and sponsorship forms need to be

returned before end of term. We are doing

the jump off through Mr De Lyall’s classes

and are currently participating in a variety of

skipping skills. Thanks to everyone who has donated

already.

Boys Basketball Yesterday our boys basketball team competed in the NSW finals at Bathurst. Their first game was against Wamberal where we won 32-28. Unfortunately we lost the next two games against Mount St Thomas and Coffs Harbour Public Schools. The boys had a great time! It has been 15 years since our school was in the Basketball State PSSA finals.

Cricket

Last Thursday 7th September, the girls and boys cricket teams competed in the Milo T20 Blast School Cup. Both boys’ teams won all three of their games which moved them into the play-off round for the grand final. Both then were defeated and came 3rd and 4th overall. The girls green team won 2 of their 4 matches and were placed 8th overall out of 13. The girls magenta team won all four of their games which placed them straight into the grand final against St Mary’s. Unfortunately they were defeated, but came runner’s up in the girls competition, which has never happened before in Dubbo South’s history of T20! It was great to hear the students reporting back after their matches about the highlights and to see them displaying fairness and cooperation within their teams. There were thrilling catches, heaps of wickets taken and countless eights, sixes and fours hit. Each team was supposed to field eight players, but both boys’ teams only played with five and still remained undefeated. An extraordinary effort on their behalf!! Thankyou to Riley Cook, Ethan Warner, Nala-ni Green and Indianna Hardisty for filling in at the last minute!! Well done everyone!

Wear Yellow for Cancer Day This year, like many Australians, Paige will be taking part in Relay for Life. Her goal is to raise as much money as possible to help combat this horrendous illness. To help Dubbo South Public School students are asked to wear yellow on Friday the 15th of September with a gold coin donation. Every little bit helps! If you would like to donate to the cause please go to https://www.relayforlife.org.au/get-involved/donate/

Let’s Make a Difference It’s that time of year again where we can make a huge difference to another child’s life. Operation Christmas Child involves packing a shoe box full of wonderful and useful surprises for a child in need. It is a wonderful project to do with your own children to teach the important lesson of thinking of others and valuing the life we have. Fill a box with gifts in these categories: something to love, something to wear, something for school, something for hygiene and something to play with. Ideas include: T-shirts, thongs, washers, soap, toothbrush, coloured pencils, lead pencils, note pads, exercise books, match box cars, balloons, stickers, hairbrush, comb, tennis balls, plastic cups, soft toy (something to love). If you can’t manage a whole box, maybe think about donating a few items. Mrs Prince is coordinating donations. Boxes are available from the top office or Mrs Prince.

P&C News Highlights from the last P&C meeting include: Proceeds from the Colour Fun Run of $11040 was donated to the school for the purchase of new outdoor seating. Thanks to all who contributed to the Fathers Day stall—we made a profit of $1186. Thank you to our uniform shop volunteers. Your efforts are most appreciated.

75th Anniversary Saturday 14th October

P&C representatives together with school staff have been planning the day. Each Stage is preparing stalls or displays. There will be displays of memorabilia and photos, school tours, a time capsule and food available. Please get the word out about this event especially if you have contacts who are former students of the school. The P&C are looking after the BBQ and Devonshire Teas and selling souvenir pens and mugs. We would appreciate some help on the day with setting up, cooking, serving or perhaps baking two dozen scones. If you can help please contact the school.

Canteen Roster Volunteers required—even for an hour or two! Please ring Jodie on 68822957 if you can help!

Project Platypus On Thursday, 7th September, selected students from Stage 2 went on an excursion to Wambangalang Environ-

mental Education Centre. It was the 40th birthday since the establishment of the centre and the Taronga West-

ern Plains Zoo were there to celebrate. All of the students were excited to start the day and there were four

workshops to participate in. The workshops included bird watching, viewing art works from Project Platypus,

map drawing and looking at insects under a microscope. All children and staff enjoyed the day and could not

wait to get back to school to share what they had learnt. It was a tremendous day for all involved.

By Georgie Taylor and Blake Payne

Thirty two children went to Wambangalang for Project Platypus. The rest of Stage 2 stayed at school to study Platypuses. Kaitlyn was in the group that stayed at school and we finished our projects. We learnt that they have two layers of fur—one is water proof and the other layer keeps them warm in the water. They also have a poisonous spur. They are quite small growing to 35-50cm in length. By Kaitlyn Ellis

Wilym was in the group at Wambanglang—they had previously made up a song called Platypus Wrap - The first part goes like this: I cant wait to eat crays in this particular day in May Yay! I got my cray in May today Fresh water shrimp, fresh water shrimp I can’t wait to eat these shrimp with my bill down in the deep I’ll go finding and I’ll go catching Then I’ll eat these yummy shrimp when they wimp!
