Fresh Arts Inc. will be holding its first exhibition for 2016 at the DRTCC from June 2 - June 24. There is no official opening this year. Eleven Fresh Arts artists will be exhibiting still life work, a tribute to well-known Australian artist, Margaret Olley. The exhibition will be open to the public the same times as the Dubbo Eisteddfod program during June. All artworks are for sale, artist details displayed with the works.

The Dubbo Cultural Forum is supported by a wide range of volunteer Cultural/Arts organisations which are coming together three times a year, in a mutually respectful endeavour, to actively promote effective sustainability within the wider community.

New Resident’s Night @ DRTCC Dubbo Regional Theatre was proud to co-host the New Residents’ Night on Thursday 19 May. This get-together is an initiative of Western Plains Regional Council to make new residents feel welcome. Moving to a new City can be daunting and it’s a great way to meet others that are in the same situation in a social and friendly atmosphere.
New residents are also given the opportunity to meet with representatives of Dubbo’s various community service providers including Dubbo Regional Theatre and Dubbo Artz Inc and local businesses who are involved in the City Development Partnership Program. Businesses are encouraged to provide a ‘welcome gift’ comprising of an offer or discount that will form part of the ‘New Residents’ Kit’ distributed on the night. Guests make their way around the information booths, enjoy complimentary refreshments and partake in a few fun games to break the ice. Manager, Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre, Linda Christof explained to the newcomers the array of shows on offer at the Theatre, how to find out about the latest shows and the benefits of being a Season Subscriber. Linda then took about 25 people on a guided tour of the Theatre and backstage including dressing rooms and the much talked about ‘Green’ Room. Dubbo Regional Theatre’s ‘Welcome Gift’ included two complimentary tickets per resident for either We Three Kings of Orient (Concert), Educating Rita (Comedy Play) or Encoded (Aerial Dance). A number of residents took up the offer on the night, with others promising to discuss and ‘agree’ on the performance with their partner. New residents to Dubbo
G’Day Folkies of the District,
Dubbo Folk Club has been undergoing some changes recently,
President Jock has retired and Midnight Brydon was elected
unopposed.
We will still be gathering as usual on the 2nd Sunday at the
Western Star. As an experiment, there will be no charge to any
visitors who join us. The music will start at 2.30pm.
Since the last issue of the newsletter, we have finalised our Forty
Shades of Folk concert with the result that Headspace and Make
a Wish are both $300.00 better off. It is the wish of the new
President to encourage people starting out on their musical
adventure to come along and listen or perform in the session. In
his retiring address Jock Webb expressed his pride in the
progress made by those who performed at the concert. Jock has
been messing around with music for nigh on fifty years, but
some of those who performed that day had little experience just a
few years ago.
We hope to do this again in the future, but in the meantime
Dubbo Folk Club is returning to its core mission, Sharing Music
from the Heart. So on that 2nd Sunday, come along, sing or play
with us, or to us or just listen and enjoy a quiet drink.

Did You Know? Dubbo Artz played a significant role in the successful acquisition of a tiered theatre for Dubbo. In 2003 the Dubbo Artz Committee resolved to continue the community fight for a tiered theatre for the City of Dubbo. This battle had been started some 50 years earlier, when community members expressed the desire for a performing arts theatre for Dubbo. Various community fundraising events ensued over those years, with the funds raised being used by the Council for other cultural projects. One of these projects being the Dubbo Regional Art Gallery, which was also a very welcome attribute for Dubbo. Fresh from a name change in April 2003, from Dubbo Arts and Cultural Advisory Council (DACAC) to the much catchier “Dubbo Artz”; the new committee, led by President Leonie Ward and Secretary, June Wilson, stepped into the local political arena with growing member support and community backing to lobby for a tiered theatre in Dubbo.
Representatives from Dubbo City Council (DCC) advised the Committee to “prove the need for a theatre in Dubbo”. With this in mind, Dubbo Artz resolved to provide the community of Dubbo with professional, live theatre on a regular basis, to not only grow an audience base but to irrevocably “prove” to the DCC that the community of Dubbo was in fact, in need of a theatre. “Last Of the Red Hot Lovers”, shown at the Civic Centre on Saturday 9 August, 2003, starring Jackie Weaver and Max Gillies, to a remarkable audience of 420, highlighted the major shortcomings of the Dubbo Civic Centre in the areas of extremely poor acoustics and lines of sight. With this successful turn out of Dubbo people, the Dubbo Artz Committee was committed to the first step in the fight for a tiered theatre in Dubbo. An average of five to six professional performances were presented by Dubbo Artz per year from 2004 to the end of 2009, with the long awaited opening of the Dubbo Regional Theatre taking place in 2010, thus bringing to an end the entrepreneurial phase of Dubbo Artz. Notable performances presented during this time include: The Shoehorn Sonata, My Brilliant Divorce, Hotel Sorrento, Don Giovanni, The Schneedles, Shirley Valentine, Barmaids, The Club, Travelling North, Menopause the Musical; just to name a mere handful! Dubbo Artz also developed and broadened an interest in opera, within the Dubbo Community. Dubbo Artz was also committed to community based fundraising, specifically for the tiered theatre, with the initiative of the “Dubbo Artz Public Fund” on 1 July 2005, enabling donations to be tax deductible. In less than five years, in a period of drought and community financial hardship, a total of $150,000 was raised by the Dubbo Artz Committee and was donated to the Dubbo City Council on 11 March 2010, to purchase the 500 seats for the new theatre. This figure represents the largest donation to the project, beating grants from the State and Federal Governments. As part of the campaign for the acquisition of a tiered theatre, Dubbo Artz also made extensive representation to the Dubbo City Council, with letters, emails, personal contact, phone calls and speeches to Council meetings, as well as a vast number of individual submissions and a well-supported petition. Dubbo Artz views its’ fundraising and campaign efforts as a major success in the history of Dubbo Artz. The Dubbo Regional Community has now enjoyed many years of live performances at their very own theatre and when you next visit the venue, take the time to read the plaque with the list of donors who helped to make the dream possible. This plaque is situated next to the northern stairway in the foyer of the Dubbo Regional Theatre.
The weekend of The Dubbo Show was particularly busy for REU members. They were committed to playing at two separate sites at The Showground on the Saturday afternoon, followed by a 40-minute performance for the Legacy Ladies' Lunch, at the Dubbo RSL Club, the following day. This proved to be quite a pleasure, for all REU players. Having mastered the well-loved Russian instrumental piece, Orchy Chornya, the next challenges will be 'Apache' and 'Baby Elephant Walk'. These items will mix well in the current repertoire of classic and modern numbers currently performed on ukulele. The percussion section is being augmented, and other instruments are adding interest and colour to several songs. This group can perhaps lay claim to being one of the most recent arrivals on the musical scene in Dubbo, via membership of the U3A Dubbo Chapter. Intensive practice is continuing in preparation for local performances on June 16 and 19, with Christmas in July a real possibility.

As It Is – From Di As we prepare for our next frosty winter we are reminded of change;
change of seasons, which can dictate changes in habitual activity.
Admiration is strong for the people we meet, who have made huge
changes in their lives, including possibly a 'tree change' from the
coast to a regional centre such as Dubbo.
It is always a pleasure for Dubbo Artz Committee personnel to meet
folk new to the district and assist, by way of our Newsletter, in
promoting some interesting cultural activities and providing contact
details. The Dubbo Artz website and Facebook page is used to
advantage by many.
During the most recent New Residents' Night it was an honour to
become acquainted with individuals and families from Gosford,
Taree, Rowena (near Walgett), Sydney, Indonesia, India, Israel and
Egypt. I observed many happy new folk, that evening. Some have
said that Dubbo "looks like it is alive."
Whenever any of us have relocated from one centre to another we
have faced challenges in establishing new personal contacts and
friendship groups through work, church and social groups, youth and
sports organisations and various cultural entities.
These days our fair city is well served by the media, with daily and
weekly print editions, commercial and ABC radio, and fairly
satisfactory coverage in local TV News programs. Transport by rail is
limited, but coach and air services are becoming more
comprehensive, as are the vital medical services needed to sustain our
growing population. Dubbo has traditionally promoted itself as a
friendly place, with Governmental and social media sites featuring
photographs of a city of smiling people. In speaking to many new
arrivals in recent times, it is notable that the response to questions
regarding personal experiences in settling into Dubbo vary widely.
"Hats off" to Chris Owens from the Uniting Church, leading a weekly
session of conversational English for migrants who need that extra
help, on a personal basis. Pre-Christmas culinary treats last December
were a real delight, I hear!!
Teagan and other staff at the Dubbo Neighbourhood Centre are doing
a grand job in supporting people in need, every day of every week.
Midnite Cafe has had success in past years, and is re-grouping, right
now, to offer more enjoyable family friendly Saturday evenings in the
near future.
Whilst some newcomers state that it is easy to find their favourite
hobby groups, others have experienced disappointment in a less than
welcoming attitude, and the word 'clique' is heard, also.
Apparently some local cultural entities can appear to almost ignore
the questions and expressed needs of folk needing information,
guidance, and possibly reassurance. These are potentially the vital
folk who may help to further build and enrich our society in the next
decade or so. Our local writers, readers, artists, actors, dancers and
musicians have some fine talents and energies on offer. A smile and a
kind word can be all that is required, in some situations.
Who wants to be shown the door at a book club? Who needs to be
squeezed out of theatrical endeavours or a music group?
The more recent promotions of live music by most leading hotels in
town is certainly noteworthy. This seems to be now a constant; young
musicians feel supported and have a ready outlet for their talents; this
then becomes a big win for performers and their fans at regular 'muso'
nights.
Dubbo may well be nurturing the next musical success story, such as
the Rolling Stones, the Beatles or The Seekers.
Perhaps we can all decide to re-introduce the 'welcome to Dubbo'
image, personally, so that the reputation of friendliness is re-
established, and genuine smiles ignite our city.
This can be the biggest win for Dubbo that could ever be delivered.

Strong Women Strong Painting Strong Culture is an exhibition of Aboriginal women’s contemporary art from the Central and Western Deserts. Featuring the work of nearly 60 senior women artists, it includes exuberant paintings, batik, soft sculpture, carvings, etchings and tjanpi desert grass sculptures, all alive with stunning colour and energy. It reveals the success of women's art from some of Australia's most remote and disadvantaged communities, an achievement of major artistic and political significance.
Waste to Art is an annual exhibition showcasing the creative re-use of discarded recycled materials. Engaging with the community, Waste to Art attracts school children, artists and community members who explore recycling and conserving the environment in their works. The exhibition explores the creativity of our region as well as highlighting the importance of recycling to sustainable living.
Growing up in Adelaide, Chris Kunko would visit his Ukrainian grandparents every Sunday. Kunko’s father and grandparents were displaced by WW2 and came to Australia as refugees in 1949 and for Kunko visiting them was like a magical connection to another culture. Family Gold Pass is inspired by the contents of an old tin box recently given to the artist by his mother, filled with old photographs, immigration papers and Christmas cards and letters written in Ukrainian. Kunko uses this source material to create expressive oil paintings that investigate his family’s story of survival. Kunko’s paintings reflect his own exploration of identity and how displacement has affected generations of his family.

Flinders Quartet Friday 3 June – 7.30pm
The Flinders Quartet is one of Australia’s most loved chamber music ensembles. Their dynamic performances of the full spectrum of string quartet repertoire have delighted both audiences and critics, and the quartet is a highly respected force on the Australian chamber music scene. International engagements have taken them to the UK, Singapore, Finland, Sweden and Canada. The Flinders Quartet is in demand at festivals throughout Australia and their two CD releases on the ABC Classics label met with critical and popular acclaim. As teachers and mentors they regularly work with the Australian Youth Orchestra and its developmental programs for young chamber groups. This concert features an engaging mix of music by Beethoven, Britten and Greenbaum.

Strings Masterclass with Flinders Quartet Saturday 4 June – 11am
Violin, viola and cello students, teachers and all music lovers are welcome to attend this masterclass. The members of the Flinders Quartet are experienced teachers and mentors who regularly work with students from the Australian Youth Orchestra. This is a wonderful opportunity for local string players to learn from these experts.

The Sun Records All Stars
Mothers' Day was celebrated enthusiastically around many
venues in Dubbo, and now this active choir is taking
bookings and swinging into preparations for Christmas in
July gigs.
Another theme highlight of each year is a "Jazz and
Gospel" program presented each August, inspired by Dubbo
Jazz Club with a weekend of jazz in that month.
Any chorister interested in SATB a’cappella singing (with
mainly daytime performances) is urged to get in touch with
Di, on 6882 0498.
If you have never tried this style of singing, with parts
practised with piano guidance, and you would like to try out,
please give this some thought. There is a lot of fun to be had
in singing on a regular basis!!

Royal Ballet Prima Ballerina Assoluta Margot Fonteyn (1919– 91) was an iconic figure in British ballet. Particularly renowned for her performances in the classics, Fonteyn’s dancing was distinguished by its perfect line and exquisite lyricism and her musical ear. After a renowned partneship with Robert Helpman, her later partnership with Rudolf Nureyev towards the end of her career won them both worldwide fame.
The Dubbo Film Society is a not for profit film appreciation group which has been operating since 1989. The Society aims to bring quality films to an audience that has an interest in films outside the mainstream currently offered by commercially run cinema chains. Screenings are held at the Dubbo Regional Theatre in Darling Street Dubbo at various dates through the year. Two of the greatest, most skilled and most admired artists of modern times, each rooted in traditional values and yet both unremittingly radical in their work. Renoir once said of Degas, “Even if he had never picked up a paint brush in his life, Degas would still be the greatest artist of modern times.” Rodin, now considered the most important of 19th Century sculptors was considered a failure in his lifetime. At the centre of both artists work is the Human Body - In all its splendour, vulnerability and beauty.

principles of the Maker Movement. Our community
consists of like-minded people who are passionate about
innovating, creating and collaborating.
Our agenda is to build a culture of innovation and creativity,
whilst strengthening the local community by bringing people
together. We provide access to equipment, a safe
environment, and the knowledge that most Makers don't
have in their own kit.

David brings both clinical knowledge and personal experience to his workshops, which provide a gentle environment for participants from beginner to experienced, to re-examine and re-tell their stories through structured life writing. David Roland has a PhD in clinical psychology. His latest book, How I Rescued My Brain tells the story of his recovery from stroke and trauma.

8am – 5.30pm Daily Morocco is a land that fills your traveller’s world like a dream. It’s timeless and ageless. The air is rich with a palpable atmosphere that envelops you, keeping you fascinated and devoted like a lover. Everywhere looks like the most fabulous of imaginary film sets – including the real one at the Atlas Film Studios in Ouarzazate, by acreage the largest in the world, where you can imagine you are someone from another time waiting to be whisked away to your home in the desert. As we travel we see the most amazing things. It is a land of stones and every so often you see them in small piles like minarets one on top of the other out in the middle of nowhere. If you’re lucky, you'll also see goats standing on top of argan trees! We were lucky to see this, the most crazy of craziest things. This exhibition is a recollection of the dream that was our friend Morocco.
