DENTAL TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE 201428th February & 1st March 2014, NEC Birmingham2

Over three years ago the GDC council made the decision to review the existing Standards for Professionals and draft new guidelines.

Our existing Standards had first been published in 2005, long before the registration of dental technicians, dental nurses, orthodontic therapists, clinical dental technicians and dental hygienists and therapists*, and so had not taken these categories of registrant into account.

The council undertook extensive research with patients, including a wide range of different public groups and stakeholders. We asked patients and the public what they expected from dental professionals and what standards they expected from them. We organised both large-scale research and smaller, more focused groups, as this was a very difficult subject to ask the public to understand. Most importantly, we listened to their views and this began to shape our thinking on how our new Standards should be drafted. We quickly decided that each section of the new regulations would include patient expectations.

We began to test their views on registrants and stakeholder groups with meetings and consultations all around the UK, and all areas of the profession were represented. With various viewpoints and perspectives, we were able to develop and refine the new Standards so as to meet the patient expectations we had laid out.

As always in this type of exercise, the regulatory landscape was and still is changing –the Francis report after the Mid-Staffs tragedy and the importance of transparency and candour with patients is a prime example. We also tried to incorporate new thinking on areas like electronic media such as electronic data, email, the Internet and social media like Facebook and twitter.

Patients and registrants were clear on the importance of communication in all aspects of care, with clarity and transparency highlighted as most important; so we now have a principle just on communication. Registrants also told us they wanted greater clarity in the Standards so we have strengthened our language using the terms ‘must‘ and ‘should’ and defined what this means, and we have produced more descriptive guidance to support our Standards with examples from realistic workplace situations.

We now register the whole dental team so we have included a specific principle on team working and how we should work together effectively, in the best interests of patients. In addition, sharing information and the importance of confidentiality by all the team is made very clear. Many registrants now work in a managed environment, especially DCPs, and this is reflected in the Standards making it clear to employers and team leaders the need to allow and support registrants to work within the new regulations.

Within the Standards we also remind registrants that dental technicians are still part of that team, even though they are likely to be working away from the patient and other members of the team. The dental team is much larger now and patients can often find this confusing, so it is important that patients are aware of who is involved in their treatment and their role within the team. The importance of gaining appropriate consent from patients is set out in detail; as is the importance of referral to the appropriate registrant so professionals are not working outside their scope of practice.

Finally, we have stipulated that dental devices must be sourced from a provider registered with the GDC and MHRA. This stands to highlight the importance of keeping accurate written records

and giving patients a written treatment plan and clear information on costs before treatment commences.

All the Standards are important; there is no hierarchy in the nine principles. Each registrant will have to look at the way they work to understand the principles that are most relevant to their area.

The way CPD is structured is now being reviewed and the GDC is proposing to use the new Standards as a reference in all aspects of CPD. We want to integrate them into our work in all aspects of what we do.

The standards are available online at:

http://www.gdc-uk.org/Newsandpublications/Publications/Publications/StandardsforDentalProfessionals[1].pdf

All registrants will receive a hard copy in September.

Standards for the Dental Team will be effective from 30 September 2013. If a complaint is made about a registrant it is against the principles in this document that their behaviour/conduct will be measured.

I will be presenting a lecture on the new standards at the Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) 2014 where I will be covering all the important changes. I look forward to meeting you there and we can explore in more detail what this all means for you.

VIEWS AND INTERVIEWS FROM EXHIBITORSThe Dentistry Show has an exciting and refreshing approach for the whole

dental team - I thoroughly recommend it both as an exhibitor and visitor. With DTS alongside from 2014 this will be the event that unites the UK dental community. It’s not to be missed!

Ed Attenborough, Attenborough Dental

I’m really looking forward to DTS 2014. Having two premium dental exhibitions

under one roof is fantastic. It gives me a great opportunity, not only to see the latest technologies and meet all the exhibitors, but to also catch up with my clients and meet potential new clients. Now running annually at the NEC Birmingham and with a list of world class speakers, it can only mean that the event will attract the best people in dentistry and with so much new technology it gives everyone a great chance to feel a real part of the team.

This will definitely be a two-day visit!

David Bentley, Casterbridge Dental

We have been going to Dental Technology Showcase for a number of years now. We alternate between this show and another international exhibition every year.

The show is always a good launch pad for us. We get to meet existing customers and new customers and keep them updated on our services and products. We find attending the Show is a good opportunity for us and we are looking forward to the new format this year and what it can do for us.

Phil Evans, Techceram

Based on our previous experiences at The Dentistry Show, if DTS 2014 event is as

well organised and the results are as good as we have come to expect, we will be very happy. There has always been a good attendance of quality delegates to our stand and we have achieved our goals of increased product awareness and sales each year.

With the DTS running alongside The Dentistry Show 2014, I think that both exhibitors and delegates will benefit. With dental technicians now being registered with the GDC and the emphasis of the whole dental team working closely together (including dental technicians), it makes good sense for the technicians to be represented alongside the rest of the team, under one roof.

We would certainly recommend that other lab companies attend the DTS 2014, as the more varied the trade exhibition is the more professionals it will appeal to, encouraging a more proactive event for everyone.

Derren Neve, Valplast

In recent years, I have found The Dentistry Show to be much more focused on the

industry than other events. As an exhibitor, we have been delighted to make a good number of sales in previous year at the Show, and we were in fact contemplating attending both The Dentistry Show and DTS next year.

I think the move of DTS to the NEC in Birmingham was a great idea. We have many international guests at the event, and the NEC ensures easier access and communications for everyone visiting.

And with the two events running alongside each other in 2014, we have a great opportunity to make the most of both of them while only paying for one floor space!

In 2014, we will be exhibiting a larger stand than we have previously taken and also sponsoring a lecturer to present within the lab-dedicated conference programme and provide demonstrations on our stand. This I think shows our belief in the event, and we look forward to another successful year.

Darren Shorrocks, Managing Director, Cendres+Métaux UK Ltd.

...the NEC ensures easier access and communications

for everyone visiting...

Today patients have very high aesthetic expectations and wish that the result is as natural as possible when their anterior and posterior teeth are reconstructed, not only in ceramic restorations.

Light-curing, micro-filled veneering composites have proved highly successful in clinical

practice and are used for a wide variety of applications, thanks to extraordinary material properties and convenient handling. The appeal of CERAMAGE lies in its optimised balance between excellent material characteristics and superior aesthetics. The special composition of this micro-hybrid composite system, with a ceramic filler content of more than 70 %, allows you to fabricate all types of aesthetic indirect anterior and posterior restorations using any framework design. Unlike ceramics, CERAMAGE absorbs stress, which has a positive effect on the chewing behaviour of patients with implant-supported restorations. Its outstanding flexural strength is achieved exclusively by light-curing. Complicated and time-consuming heat-tempering treatments are not necessary.

The structure and composition of Ceramage allows the technician controlled application and carving to include the smallest anatomical details; consequently the build up of metal-free inlays and onlays are simple and fast.

Due to the fluorescence and natural light transmission of the Ceramage material, restorations will exhibit a vivid, brilliant appearance in the patient’s mouth.

Light Curing CreativityApart from the shape and function of the tooth, its shade is the most important decision criterion for the acceptance of a restoration, especially if it is veneered or fabricated with highly cross-linked, ceramically filled composites such as Ceramage. The light-curing LITE ART paste stains are fluorescent and adapt to the colour effects occurring in nature. They can be applied almost as thin as porcelain and cure excellently on the surface due to newly developed multifunctional monomers and photo initiators. LITE ART stains adapt perfectly to achieve internal colour modifications in resins, composites, artificial teeth or frameworks.

We were involved with The Dentistry Show in March of this

year. We held a number of clinical sessions, including information updates for CDTs, and also had a stand. This served two purposes; we were primarily there to meet dental technicians who would wish to go on the training course to become CDTs, but we were also advertising the courses we run for general dentists and other team members. From our point of view it was a very successful event, both for information gathering, and giving. It was particularly useful from the CDT point of view as we picked up a lot of enquiries from people who would like to enrol on our course.

“We will of course be appearing at the combined event in 2014. For me we teach very clearly a collaborative practice message. We don’t believe that CDTs or any other member of the team should be working just in isolation. We firmly believe dentistry is a team activity and so by running The Dentistry Show and DTS side-by-side I hope there will be further opportunity for the HEKSS to get its message across.

Stephen Lambert-Humble, Postgraduate Dental Dean at the HEKSS

2014 will be the Orthodontic Technicians Association (OTA UK) second year at the

Dental Technology Showcase (DTS). We found that it was a very positive experience meeting old friends and new and we are very much looking forward to the 2014 event.

The DTS gives us a valuable opportunity to engage with all members of the Dental team. It is also an opportunity to meet existing members of our association and talk to potential members about the many advantages that membership of the OTA gives. We would like to encourage delegates from both the public sector and the commercial sector to come along to our stand where one of our OTA council members will be happy to give you information about how OTA membership can benefit both sectors.

The OTA has been involved in delivering high quality education and information since 1972 through its conferences, seminars, website and publications. DTS 2014 is another such opportunity, and we will be providing lectures for the technicians programme as we did for the 2013 DTS, which was a great success and was very well attended. The OTA(UK) would like to welcome all DTS delegates to come along to the OTA stand and to see our lectures. We look forward to meeting you there.

The delegates will have an opportunity through a lecture that will be presented by Jonathan Bill (UK) were he will discuss the history of our present occlusal thinking, the evidence base, the anthropological approach to occlusion and our evidence and implications to dental care. You will able hear about our research, which took place at Loughborough University (UK), one of the world’s leading bio-mechanic universities, which supports and underpins our techniques. The whole lecture will challenge all of today’s established occlussal concepts.

This new occlusal concept has been developed jointly in the United States and United Kingdom and is revolutionising the function for denture wearers. The chewing ability is greatly increased, with it a wider range of foods they can now have. This is also possible with the most challenging groups of patients which exhibit severe atrophic ridges. The benefit to the clinician is that now they can produce dentures that give greater patient satisfaction, less adjustments and much improved denture stability during function.

we can offer Dental Labs a real alternative to traditional manufacturing methods by using this new technology which is gathering momentum in the industry. 3 D Printing can offer huge time saving, labour saving and therefore money saving benefits to all sectors of this industry. CAD based dental restoration using Envisiontec 3D printers deliver labour and material cost reduction as well as higher clinical quality and consistency throughout the manufacturing process.

Our low cost high throughput solutions offer the requisite quality to improve dental Labs competiveness to be able to compete with lower cost providers.

Our new 3 Dent machine from Envisiontec, is just being launched onto the European market having already established a customer base in the USA and is using the latest selective contour photo curing (SCP) technology. This results in giving a build time of 10mm height per hour across the entire build envelope and can build 14 full arches for aligner models in less than 2 hours.

Long-term satisfaction for you and your patients

Straumann has always developed and manufactured products based on evidence, precision, reliability and simplicity, never taking shortcuts or bringing products to the market without the necessary development or research. Implants are not merely “screws”, they are high-tech medical devices that will remain in patients’ bodies for many years, and although clinical success is based on numerous factors, the use of an implant and abutment from the same system that are designed to fit together perfectly has significant advantages.

The Straumann® Dental Implant System offers an extensive range of standard and custom abutments in a variety of materials, guaranteeing the required precise custom-fit between implant and abutment. Clinicians requesting custom abutments from their laboratory are best advised to request original Straumann components.

Offering your patients original components is of great importance when it comes to long-term stability of an implant case, and for peace of mind Straumann offers a lifetime guarantee for implants, a 10-year guarantee for metal abutments and restorations, and a 5-year guarantee for ceramic abutments and restorations. (Guarantees apply if all original Straumann components are used in accordance with the instructions for use).

Terec was established in 1985 by a group of leading independent dental laboratories whose prime objective was to source and research new techniques and materials and bring them to the UK and Irish markets. Terec is particularly known for introducing the unique Chameleon® Zirconia veneers, which revolutionized aesthetic dentistry, and the Chameleon® range of materials and restorations.

Since the 1980s, advances in technology have accelerated rapidly, generating a plethora of new materials, equipment and systems. In response, Terec’s focus of attention has widened.

Terec members operate independently of each other, they share the same goals. Members meet regularly to explore and assess new products, materials and techniques and are often asked by equipment manufacturers to trial and appraise new technology.

Terec members develop solid relationships built on mutual trust and support, not only among group members but also with their customers. They strive to be helpful partners to their dentists and to be included as part of the dentist’s team, contributing to treatment planning and offering a range of value added services. As a result Terec supports marketing and promotional activities. Our members are eager to help clinicians promote the benefits of aesthetic dentistry to their patients.
