Drum Planter Project

Embed Size (px)

DESCRIPTION

This was a project to discover if I could clad a steel drum with a plaster that would stick. Using asphalt emulsion- a non-toxic 'tar' product, such as Henry 107 brand, plus sawdust, clay, with hydrated lime added to the mixes. Poly dress netting, provided the 'tooth'; and the layers of mixes, with a final paper+lime plaster, drizzled with laundry bluing, and colorants completed the " garden planter"- dirtcheapbuilder.com

5. Once the lime plaster was dry a drizzle of pigment in water was added over the rough surface. The blue color is liquid laundry bluing straight from the bottle. Look for "Mrs. Stewarts" brand in grocery stores, in the laundry soap aisle. The other colors are powdered pigments from www.Sinopia.com Similar pigments can be found cheaper at pottery stores, and as cement colors at building suppliers.

6. The glass at the top is broken, salvaged art glass from a local pipe maker. The glass was threaded on plastic filiment and looped through existing slots in the drum lip.

The drum now sits in my yard, and once filled with soil, it was planted with avacado seeds and sunflowers.
