Drive Under 40km/h in 4101 ACampaignToPutPeopleInTheDriver’sSeatInKurilpaPeninsula

The“DriveUnder40kmin4101”campaignisaninitiativeofKurilpaFutures.Itinvitespeopledrivingwithinthepeninsulatokeeptheirspeedbelow40km/h.Bydoingthis,driversexercisepeople-powerandhelpmakeasafer,healthierbalancebetweenmotorisedvehiclesandcommunitywelfare.Apermanentmaximumdrivingspeedof40km/hthroughouttheKurilpapeninsulaistheultimateoutcomeofthecampaign.
EverydayexperienceonthestreetsofKurilpa,suggestsaLowerUrbanSpeedLimit(LUSL)of40km/h–alreadyinsomeBrisbaneshoppingprecinctsandinbuilt-upareasofmanymajorinternationalcities–iswarrantedhere.
TheBCCLordMayorprioritisesLUSLwheretherearenotrafficlightsorpedestriancrossings,theoppositionsaysdebateisneeded,RACQsaysCouncilneedstoconsultmoreandspendmoremoneytopreventincidentsinthefirstplace–decisionmakerscontinuetoconsult,disagreeandmovetothenexttopic.
Peopleandcommunitywelfaremustbeputfirst,abovevehiclesandspeed,andaLUSLmustbedeclaredin4101-indeedalldenselypopulatedareasoftheinnercitynow,not‘soon’.
Speedlimits,asshownonacurrenttrafficzonemapofKurilpa,appearasreactionaryupgradesandsigninstallationbytheCouncilinresponsetoincreasedpopulationandassociatedcarnumbers.
Withoutsoundplanning,theareaisbecomingathrough-routefornon-residenttraffic.Roadshereremainmuchastheywereinhorseandcartdaysandunsuitedtoaheavytrafficload,largevehiclesand60km/hspeed.Drivingtoconditionsdemandsaloweredpeninsula-widespeedlimitof40km/h.
DornochTerraceresidents,driversandcyclistswouldwelcomeadropfrom50km/hto40km/hasjustonemoresteptowardimprovedroadsafety.CyclistinjuriesanddeatharepartofDornoch’stragictraffichistory.Heavyvehiclesarenotpermittedherebuttheyre-routetootheralreadybusystreets.
AnotherneedforLUSLisMontagueRoad(anditsmanysmall19thcenturyaccessstreets).Thisroadhasmorphedintoadevelopers’highwaywhereheavyconstructionvehiclesandb-doublesenterandexitsitesviaMontagueRd.Itisnowamajortwo-waybusroute.
MontagueRoadshouldbeasafeexitandentryforlocalpeopleandnotaroadwhereconstructionvehiclesrule.LittleaccountisbeinggiventoaddressingaheavyconstructionvehiclenightmarethroughoutKurilpawithitstrafficdisruption,dangertocyclistsandpedestrians,crashesandnearmisses,dustandvehicleemission,roaddamageandseverenegativeimpactonthewelfareofresidentsandbusinessowners.
IncreasedresidentvehiclenumberswillcontinueasKurilpaundergoesover-developmentandreliefwillbeunlikelyevenwhenbuildingconstructionslows.Thepeninsulaisbecomingapeak-timethroughroutefordriverstryingtoavoidmajorarterialroads.Aburgeoningpopulationinasmalllandareashouldhaveboulevards,trees,bikewaysandsafefacilitiesforitspedestrians.Reducedspeedthroughoutthepeninsulawouldbeonesmallsteptowardsputtingbrakeson,bothfigurativelyandliterally.
KurilpaFuturesasksthat‘DriveUnder40km/hin4101’becomespreferreddriverbehaviour.Residentsareurgedtoparticipateandspreadtheword–makeKurilpasafer;giveresidents’vehicles,pedestriansandcyclistsafairgo;reducenoise;createamoreharmoniousenvironmentandhelpmakeanimmediateandhopefullyenduringchange.
BumperstickersandanelectroniclogoareavailablethroughKurilpaFutures.Residentscanbackthecampaignmessagebyputting“DriveUnder40in4101”onafence,T-shirt,bin,windowandeverywherethatcreativityallows.KurilpaFutureswelcomespeoplewhocareaboutKurilpaandarekeentoshareideasandenergy.Informationaboutmeetingsandmembershipisonthewebsite.
