Veterans continue their service to others at Ozarks Medical CenterOMC would like to recognize a few of our veterans that came forward to be interviewed. We appreciate all that they have done for our country and applaud all veterans for their service. Here are the next two of 9 stories.

Michelle Dillard, Case Manager, OMC Behavioral Health CareMichelle Dillard, a case manager at Ozarks Medical Center Behavioral Health Care, has spent the last 30 years in the reserves: 19 years with the Army Reserves, and the last 11 years with the Air Force Reserves, which she is currently a member, stationed out of Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. Dillard has traveled abroad to Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Turkey, Romania, Germany, Guatemala, Korea, Belize, and Egypt, just to name a few, and has worked deployments stateside including border patrol in Texas and a remodeling project at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin.

During her time with the Army, she was part of a construction crew. Her deployments mostly consisted of humanitarian missions to build schools. It was during a deployment to Guatemala that Dillard says had the most profound impact on her. It was on their second day in Guatemala when there was a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. “We went to a hospital to help. It was the saddest thing I have ever seen. Cribs held four babies. They were making casts for the injured out of cardboard and duct tape. For our mission, we had brought things to distribute like coloring books and crayons. The only thing the kids really wanted was water. We spent most of our mission rebuilding the hospital. Once we finally got to our real job of building a new school, we worked just a few days before our mission ended. But during those few days, there was a lady who lived in a very run down shack next door. Every day, she would bring us food, tortillas and fried bananas, just because she was so grateful that we were there,” Dillard said.

Dillard acknowledges that the most useful skill that has come from her military experience is the ability to work with such a diverse group of people. “You don’t take things for granted. You see the other side of the spectrum,” she said. This quality is one that she uses in her everyday life on the job. As a case manager, she visits her clients in their homes. She works with them on coping skills, anger

management, shopping skills, healthy eating habits, and personal hygiene. “I never look down on my clients. I know that they are doing the best that they can. I enjoy working with them and helping them make a difference in their quality of life,” Dillard said.

Dillard and husband Jeff have four children. The two older ones have already followed in mom’s footsteps of service. Daughters Jonnie, 27, is a nurse atMercy Hospital in Springfield; and Jamie, 21, is in the Coast Guard. Jenna, 11; and Justin, 9; attend school in Mammoth Spring.

Dillard says she was a rebellious teenager who planned to marry right out of high school. She was talked into signing up for the military as a way to pay for her and her future husband’s education. The marriage didn’t happen, and the education was put off until eleven years ago. Now with five degrees including Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Elementary Education, and Child and Family Development, Dillard doesn’t regret her decision to serve her country. “The military gave me a sense of pride in myself and taught me how to be responsible. It changed my life, and I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to serve my country for so many years. My family has been very supportive and I could not have done this without them.”

OMC Behavioral Health Care offers efficient and effective mental health services to children and adults including individual, couples and family counseling. In addition, BHC provides psychological testing and evaluation, case management and medication services to help reduce the severity and duration of mental health disorders. Our team of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurse practitioner, nurses and counselors provide convenient, comprehensive care to keep our community mentally healthy.

Gary Carter, LPNOMC Neurosciences Center “Join the Navy and see the World!” That was the slogan that enticed Gary Carter to enlist as a Mess Management Specialist in the Navy in 1975. Carter served almost five years in the Navy and did see quite a bit of the world. He worked on aircraft carriers and submarines, and visited South America, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Western Pacific, Australia, Japan, and more. He volunteered for submarine duty and was stationed in San Diego on the USS Gurnard, a nuclear fast attack sub.

As a Mess Management Specialist, Carter managed the Navy mess hall, afloat and ashore. Preparing menus, serving meals, and maintaining the food service spaces, he also was responsible for the procurement of equipment and mess gear.

Although he was enlisted during a peace time, Carter says he understands what it is like to put your life on the line when you love your country enough to give your life without a blink of an eye. This understanding helps him relate to the veterans that he sees on a daily basis during his job at OMC. Working in the Neurosciences Center, Carter says he has a better understanding of what the veterans have been through. “My military experience helps me every day in being able to deal with people and situations, and has helped me throughout my life in relating to different jobs and locations.” Carter has worked as a nurse in the OMC Neurosciences Center since November of 2007.

After his service, Carter worked as an Agricultural Pest Control Advisor in California. A job that required him to spend eight hours per day traveling from farm to farm, ranch to ranch, and talking to farmers and ranchers about their needs. When the job was changed to a desk job and making phone calls instead of on-site visits, Carter decided to return to school. He took an aptitude test which revealed his strengths and job matches: career military, police officer, or nurse. He ended up returning to school to become an LPN, then he began working as a Medical Technical Assistant for the California Department of Corrections. “I was basically a nurse with a badge,” Carter said.

After retiring from the Department of Corrections, Carter and wife, Linda, decided to move back to Missouri. Carter had graduated high school from Norwood, and knowing that the cost of living would be less in Missouri, they moved back. Linda is a real estate broker, and their two sons, Adam and Andy, both work in Information Technology.

OMC Neurosciences Center provides care for diseases and disorders of the nervous system. Specializing in brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles, the Neurosciences Center also contributes to the Level 2 Stroke Center designation and is a provider for the ALS Treatment Center.

Comment received via OMC Website:My father, George Martin, was in ICU last week. His nurse, Rufina, gave him exceptional care and was instrumental in getting hospice set up so he could go home. Because of her care and quick actions, he was able to go home before he passed away. She is a wonderful nurse and an asset to OMC.

I was admitted to the hospital on the Oct. 16. I was transported by Air Evac and was received by the ER personnel with professional and compassionate care. I spent 2 days in the ICU and 3 days on 2 South. I was treated with the best care I have ever had in a hospital. All of the staff from housekeeping, nutrition ~ great food ~ and the nurses and nurse assistants were great, also the respiratory, too. Everyone made me feel like they cared for me and made me feel as comfortable as possible. I also want to thank Dr. Makarian for his attention that he gave to me. He listened to everything I said and he attended to my every care with professionalism and concern for my health. Thank you OMC for your caring and professional staff that you have.

Comment received thru phone callI always use OMC services, mostly Rheumatology & HOME.

I have dealt with HOME for the past few years and they have always been very polite. If they can’t help me, they refer me.They are always kind and considerate.

I called HOME yesterday and they couldn’t get what I needed but they were very good about telling me how to go about getting it. Both people I spoke to yesterday were very nice and considerate. I did not get their names.
