APPLICATIONS DRIVING POWER OVER ETHERNETAPPLICATIONS DRIVING POWER OVER ETHERNET

Convergence of IP telephony (Voice over IP), wireless access points, IP security cameras and advanced intelligent building applications necessitate reliable, flexible and scalable powering solutions. PoE provides flexibility ofdevice placement and enables a single common RJ45 connection to supportboth data and power.

IP TelephonyIT managers must ensure that new IP telephony systems can becontinuously powered and provide similar uptime to that expectedfrom traditional telephone networks.

Traditional enterprise data systems utilize Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), which in the event of a power failure allowsufficient time for critical operations, databases, and servers to shutdown according to established operational procedures. This backuptime is typically measured in minutes or quarter hours of standbytime. DC powered systems are connected in parallel to transparentlycharge and provide power without switchover delays.

IP SecurityWith the acceptance of hard disk based recording devices and IPmulticast solutions, security systems no longer require proprietaryhardware and software. IP security cameras with PoE connections provide the widest range of deployment options.

By eliminating the need to run separate power lines to specific locations, flexibility is improved and installation costs are reduced. Additionally, centralized monitoring and maintenance can be achieved locally or remotely utilizing the IP data stream (for camera resets and recalibration).

WirelessWireless installations have progressed from simple points of convenience to support of mission critical applications. Laptop computers and wireless IP handsets require seamless operations across enterprise, campus, and retail environments.

PoE allows wireless access points to be positioned for optimum coverage.By eliminating the additional expense of running electrical lines to specific locations, the overall cost of installation is greatly reduced and design flexibility enhanced. Remote management of the wireless system is simplifiedsince the wireless access point can be powered down during off-hours, thusmaintaining security. Remote resets of the wireless access points can also beperformed to facilitate upgrades of endpoint devices. Therefore, PoE providesimproved security and maintenance.

Advanced Intelligent Building SolutionsBuilding automation is progressing to combine components of environmental control, security, voice and data. Building managers are motivated to improve efficiencies and lower costs by eliminatingproprietary systems in favor of structured data infrastructures supporting the convergence of voice, video, data and power.

Structured network UTP cabling and IP protocols provide anintegrated view and a common platform between the various buildingsystems. PoE provides a unified power system and backup provisionsfor critical building functions without any additional cables, outlets orconnections. The powering standard specified by the IEEE 802.3afstandard supports 48 volts DC as a regulated supply across all platforms, so that modularity and the cost of backup powering can be shared across multiple building functions.

The telecommunications industry was built around 48 volts powering standards. IEEE 802.3af is the first international standard to define the transmission of Power over Ethernet. This standard is based on existing category 5 infrastructures as a baseline requirement to support: (1) voltage supply between 44 and 57 volts DC; (2) 350 – 400 milliamperes;and (3) 15.4 watts of power at the source.Category 5 (and higher) Ethernet cabling is capable of supporting these devices in today's infrastructure up to 100 meters (90 meter horizontal + 10 meter patch field).

BENEFITS OF THE PANDUIT MANAGED POWER SOLUTIONBENEFITS OF THE PANDUIT MANAGED POWER SOLUTION

PANDUIT has taken an innovative approach toward providing a PoE solutionthat is scalable and ensures ample powering for IEEE 802.3af and Cisco legacydevices for maximum interoperability. Additionally, by maintaining a DC poweringinfrastructure, the DPoE ™ Power Patch Panel dissipates less heat compared tosolutions which utilize direct AC inputs requiring power conversion.

DPoE™ Power Patch PanelsHigh Density – Compact 24-port power patch panel design combines patchingand PoE in a single device occupying only one rack space; provides lower totalcost of ownership compared to conventional midspan devices.

Optimized Performance – Supports 48 volt DC IEEE 802.3af-2003 and Ciscopower schemes that automatically sense and provide proper powering for connected devices; eliminates the need to install separate power modules perport to save space, provides network design flexibility, and lowers overall cost of installation and peripheral components.

Power – Supports 15.4 watts to every port, which eliminates power budget loadbalancing, providing greater design flexibility as PoE devices share poweracross all 24 ports.

Low Heat Dissipation – Dissipates approximately 5 watts or about 17 BTUs of heat per unit, which is roughly 15 times lower than the BTU output of comparable network equipment. There is minimal power dissipation in theDPoE ™ panel, so panels can be mounted directly on top of each other in a rack configuration.

DPoE™ Element Manager Software (included with thePower Patch Panel)Local Manageability – Allows devices to be powered on or off via SNMP/V2 control;eliminates the need to dispatch technicians to power cycle devices reducing the totaloperating cost of a PoE system.

Remote Manageability – Provides visibility of all powered ports across the network and allows multiple site management with a single graphical user interface resulting in lower total cost of ownership.

Page 6: DPOE POWER OVER ETHERNET SYSTEM - shops.alfana.nl€¦ · deployment of Power over Ethernet (PoE). The DPoE™ System lowers capital costs, allows for PoE deployment in space-constrained

DPoE™ Power SystemsThe DPoE ™ Power Patch Panel is ready to directly connect to 110V/220V AC orthrough an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system using the DPoE ™ PowerSystem. The DPoE ™ Power System utilizes high efficiency power supplies(>92%) that can be hot-swapped for field upgrades or for replacement withouttaking the entire system down.

Space Saving – Low profile, 1 RU size saves rack space compared to traditional 48 Volt power sources.

Low Heat Dissipation – Emits 35% less heat compared to other power supply systems.

Increased Reliability – Individual and replaceable fuses provide safe poweringof up to 14 individual DPoE ™ Power Patch Panels from a single power chassis. In the event of a fault, problem isolation is reduced to a single patch panel vs.the entire system.

Upgradeability – A network interface option allows for intelligent power monitoring and provides an upgrade path for extended features and servicesincluding direct battery management, voltage regulation, and alarming.

Scalability – The 48 volt DC power is scalable from 500 to 3,750 watts and provides consistent powering across a wide range of devices and application needs.

DPoE™ Power SupplyFor lower port-count needs, the DPoE ™ Power Supply connects directly to a single DPoE ™ Power Patch Panel.

Space Saving – Flexible placement inside of rack unit allows the power supplyto be located anywhere within a 10 foot reach of the power patch panel.

Low Heat Dissipation – The isolated power supply removes any heat due toAC to DC power conversion from the power patch panel while providing up to120 watts of regulated power.

Status LED – A status LED indicates when power is being supplied to the panel.

DESIGNING YOUR POWER OVER ETHERNET SYSTEMDESIGNING YOUR POWER OVER ETHERNET SYSTEM

When deploying PoE technology, IT Managers and Network Managers mustconsider the demands placed on space, power backup, cooling, managementand scalability of the entire solution.

Real Estate and Rack Space RequirementsHow much space should be allotted for power systems? Every rack unit allottedfor powering takes away space from network devices, connections, andservices. In organizations where data center and telecommunication room realestate is at a premium, the installed cost of a single 1 RU of rack space can bevery expensive. When evaluating space requirements for your network considerthe following midspan vs. panel example below:

Power Back-Up – AC vs. DC Backup SuppliesEmergency backup in the form of an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) isrequired for high-reliability applications such as IP telephony, wireless, and security systems. In a centralized power approach, backup systems are locatedin a telecommunications room or data center. Centralized power cost effectivelyoffers improved management while maintaining maximum uptime.

Typical Example:Consider a system with 240 PoE ports. Allocating 15.4watts per port (according to the IEEE specification)would require a power source capable of supplyingabout 4,000 watts.

Operational costs can be broken out into the following items:The commercial cost of power (e.g., $0.15/kW-hr)

• 1.1 kW x $0.15/kW x 365 days x 24 hr= $1,445 per year

The cost of cooling (air conditioning – both lifecycle and initial cost) Heat is an enemy to electronicequipment, and lowers the lifespan of mission criticaldata equipment. Airflow planning is required to eliminatehot spots and ensure proper dissipation of hot air fromactive electronics. Power consumption must be calculated as new PoE equipment is installed. If powerconsumption exceeds the capacity of the existing infrastructure, costly upgrades are required. ThePANDUIT ® DPoE ™ system is engineered for low heat and power consumption.

• 1.1 kW = 3754 BTU/hr = 0.31 ton air conditioner assuming an AC unit (EER = 8.5) = $310/year

Total savings per year =

$1,755 (which equates to about

$175 savings per panel per year)!

Power Management and ConnectivityEnterprise managers are concerned with the number of active ports that can be powered and supported. How does an organization know ifsufficient power is being supplied to each client? How does one managethe power budget? The ability to know and understand the effect of adding devices to the network before they are added is criticalinformation for network planning.

Addressing power as a managed utility provides the added benefit ofseparating data tasks from utility driven needs. For example, by beingalerted that a device is no longer receiving or drawing power, a networkmanager may proactively take corrective action before costly downtimeis even recognized in a network. This is especially true in a call centerenvironment where every call attendant represents allocated costs and potential lost revenue if calls are not being taken.

In addition to monitoring the power connectivity of endpoint devices,PANDUIT Element Management System offers the ability to remotelyturn devices on and off by addressing the individual port or via thedevice naming capability. A practical usage is realized when devicesneed to be reset, either because the device is being reconfigured or to accept a new software download and needs to be restarted.Rather than sending a technical or facilities engineer to restart thedevice, the network manager simply needs to click on the associated port and issue the appropriate ON/OFF command resulting in reducedexecution time and cost savings.

Scalability of Power over Ethernet SystemsThe ability to increase the capacity of a system without having to re-engineer or cause a forklift upgrade of existing equipment is extremely important to enterprises that cannot afford downtime. That is why the DPoE ™ Power Systemallows capacity upgrades to take place while existing infrastructure continues in full operation.

DPoE™ Powering OptionsThe table below shows nine powering options. The columns on the left indicatechoices for powering using the DPoE ™ Power System rectifier options. Thecolumns on the right indicate the total wattage available for the solution as wellas a range of the number of Powered Devices (PDs) that can be accommodatedby the powering option. The number of devices is calculated according to theIEEE recommendation for class 1 devices at 3.84 watts, class 2 at 6.49 watts, and class 3 at 12.95 watts.

Configuring for PowerStep 1. Determine the power (or class) rating of the devices. A mix of power

devices can be averaged with various power ratings. If power rating is unknown, utilize the highest power rating.

Step 2. Determine the number of power devices to be supported.

Step 3. Calculate the number of DPoE ™ Power Patch Panels to be installed by dividing the number in the previous step by 24.Note: A single DPoE ™ Power System can support up to 14 panels.

Step 4. From the quantity determined in step 2, choose the powering option which best meets the needs of the configuration.
