Project #1a: Probe

1. What do I want?

• Completion, books, organization, a building, a well research departure point, efficiency, structured systems for work and processing, ethical architecture.

• I want most for this project to be complete. From research to process to the final product I want something with meat to its bones. At RISD we are left unsatisfied. As students we are often allowed to meander, wander and “search”, but not effectively come to terms with real architectural problems.

2. What do you want to make? • Clean, thoughtful models that illustrate process as well as finality.

• A clear and linked direction between the digital and the hand.

• Things of use (a reduction of wasteful production). • The things that I want to make have to be a balance between completion and

process. I want them to fine that line between the slow and the fast, the mindful and impulsive.

3. Who is this for?

• This is my last year in academia. I am not going to obtain a PHD. When I leave RISD it will be my last days as a student. So as I prepare for my final thesis project I am aware that it will be mine alone. I will be the protagonist and I want this project to be an attempt to bring my ideas into a consumable final form. Thoughts on production, aesthetics, icon, urbanism, etc… are all parts of the path I have taken to get to this moment. My thesis is for the lingering ideas I have never tested and the ones that will emerge.

4. Workflow? • I work best in the precarious place between rule and freedom. Between those two

lines we must mitigate our intent with our ambition. Letting neither waver to far from the truth we place on ourselves to discover.

• To this effect my best workflows when I am allowed to maneuver with freedom, and when it is time to critiqued I am asked to determine if those ideas were good or bad, and not what the critic wanted to see.

5. Project to design that?

• I feel that there has to be a strong dialogue between the critics, the work and myself. I often get lost in an idea that may not be applicable to previous ideas and one thought gets lost in the next. I believe a project designed specifically for this has both restraints, but distraction. This balance has to be struck to develop an idea. Otherwise I will be lost in the tangential ideas and feel restrained by established rules.

6. Number of ideas?

• Generally I start very focused on a single idea. This inevitable leads to ten ideas, then twenty and so forth. If I do not return to that first idea, consider it, weigh it, and analyze it I can be quickly lost in the “other” twenty.

7. Response or generative?

• In past studios I find that I respond to a problem then generate a personal sub problem. I am not comfortable maneuvering creatively in absolute freedom and prefer having restraints. This push and pull that evolves from having boundaries allows systems and rules to emerge that can guide a project. In turn, it provides a space in which to break those same rules.

8. Why or what you make? • I try to create things that balance both of these endeavors. Paying attention to the

way you are making can reveal wonderful insights in what you are designing. Small fumbles in the process can reveal new insights and happy mistakes. Also, in comparison how a well-crafted model or drawing can be evaluated once it is completed is also a valuable learning experience.

9. Judging your projects? • I would say that this is one of the holes in my education. I have difficulty stepping

back and seeing my project from an outsider prospective. It is something that only now I am trying to remedy with establishing times to create physical distance. Allow my thoughts to clear and return to the work. Obsession is as much a deterrent to creative as stagnation and can lead to an inability to properly evaluate my own.

10. Would you like to design a building? • Yes I would like to design a building. My hope is to be able to design a smaller

structure. Smaller structures in my experience have the opportunity to be explored in greater depth both conceptually and physically. As a response to

structure. Smaller structures in my experience have the opportunity to be explored in greater depth both conceptually and physically. As a response to

Page 136: DP Research

designing a building it is also my goal to build/draw details that can illuminate idea, concept, and tectonic logic.

11. Aesthetic object? • I am leaning towards an aesthetic object. I am interested in the study and response

to aesthetics, but also phenomena in architecture. I find texture, sounds, light, and the experience of occupation as important and parallel to the aesthetic of a space or building. An object of this nature however, does not have to exclusively be bounded in the beautiful. It can also bring about an understanding of ethical and environmental concerns.

12. Critical observations on society? • Culture and society are essential components to architecture. My thesis project

should develop an understanding that moves beyond aesthetics alone to tackle societal issues.

i. Sub Questions: Is it possible for architecture to change a city, a town, or a population for the better? Does understanding aesthetics allow for people to better appreciate their surroundings and their society?

13. Scholarly research?

• I do want to dig into scholarly research, but not all year long. After wintersession I want to start an intensive process of making to end at a place of finality if my projects culminates in a building.

• Currently I am taking two classes in an attempt to gain a strong knowledge to philosophically build an argument for my thesis.

14. Agenda? • My end agenda is a job. I would like my thesis to be a piece of how I get a job. I

believe that a thesis brought to a level of completion could provide me with work that shows who I am as a designer and help me obtain a job with those that have similar interests.

15. Prioritize. • Aesthetics

• Culture

• Job

• Building • Research

16. Connect two? • To complete two of the above objectives I would have to develop a project that

explores a culturally sensitive subject while also considering its aesthetic context. • In an ideal world the process of developing a strong thesis argument would be

complete before wintersession. Once in wintersession it would grow both physically and mentally (model and written).

• This dual “research” phase would allow for a depth of understanding that could be achieved with one alone.

17. Domain?

• The development of an architectural project has to be an attempt that both response to form and place. These two parts or domains describe my ambitions because I am considering the exploration of both aesthetics and phenomena. Time and place are constructs that demand patience to understand.

18. Topic of domain?

• Right now the topic that will receive more consideration is aesthetics as I have developed an ISP to complete scholarly research on the topic.

19. Claim?

• In response to the topics and the above questionnaire I find that aesthetics, although not the heart of a building is crucial to the understanding of context and responsive form that builds on the cultural and social structure that is embedded within a building. It is my claim that without a greater consideration of the aesthetic qualities of the built world around us architecture looses its purpose when considered an act of mere systems and is not inherently considered for its implications of beauty.

• Aesthetics is not a quality of singular appearance, but gives things the chance to grow and be heard. Over time each move can be placed against its good for the betterment of the whole culturally, societally, or aesthetically. Each exploration asks the user to step back, digest, and explore. This is not an easy task to create within architecture, but I hope to explore those possibilities.

20. Advance the claim? • There is a junction between form and context. Between aesthetics and experience.

An object that blends experience, aesthetics and context is a marker of place and at the same time alters the cultural context. As we develop into digital world architecture has become mobile. It is not a stationary act as we act and design globally. This inclusion of the world demands that we respond to the office in a
