Freddie Mercury & Queen – Who are these pop stars?
The British rock group Queen was formed in 1970. Its members were Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. The dominant role of the lead singer (frontman) Freddie Mercury made him the hub of the band during live performances. However, all band members had equal rights when it came to song production. Some 320 million records sold worldwide made Queen one of the most successful bands in the world. Among the best known hits of the group are the anthems We Are the Champions and We Will Rock You, as well as songs such as Another One Bites the Dust, Radio Ga Ga, Bohemian Rhapsody, Under Pressure, Hammer to Fall and others. Mixing and changing various musi-cal styles, such as simple, hushed song compositions, opera parodies, rock ‚n‘ roll, hard rock or disco, was typical of the band. What was important for the
band was to provide the audience with entertainment par excellence and a perfect show, also achieved by way of special effects such as lighting, smoke and pyrotechnics. Freddie Mercury, the lead singer, needed a particularly large stage for his performances, and was constantly in motion so as to recreate a theatrical performance. This included using a special, long microphone stand whose feet had been removed. He used it, depending on the situation, as a ‚guitar‘, a tambour drumstick, a balancing staff and so on. The structure of the concerts also produced effects in a specific way. At the start of the concerts, the band preferred to play fast, trenchant songs. In the middle of their set, Queen then switched to gentle, sensitive and relaxing songs so as to create a climax at the end that enthralled the audience. Even today, the Queen hit We Are the Champions is sung as a victory anthem at many events, especially in the sporting arena.

Freddie Mercury and AIDS
The lead singer of the rock group Queen, Freddie Mercury, was born in 1946 in Zanzibar, an island off the coast of East Africa. His civil name was Farrokh Bul-sara. He moved to London at the age of 13. There, he formed the group Queen in 1970 together with two guitarists, John Deacon and Brian May. His stage performances, featuring theatrical show sequences, sinuous upper body, skin-tight leather trousers and gay macho poses, enjoyed a worldwide reputation.
In personal matters, however, Freddie Mercury was very reserved, attaching importance to his privacy. His public was not particularly interested in his pri-vate life, known for its outlandish parties and Mercury’s sexual inclinations. What was expected of him was good music and an outstanding stage perfor-mance.
When Mercury became increasingly unwell, there was growing speculation about his health. In 1991, the world press reported that Freddie Mercury was suspected to be suffering from the immunodeficiency dis-ease AIDS. However, Mercury denied this. It was not until November 1991 that the press officially learned from his spokesman that he was actually suffering from AIDS and, just a few hours later, Mercury died of pneumonia in his home in London. In fact, he had foreseen and processed his own death in his final songs, such as Who Wants to Live Forever?, and especially in his last song The Show Must Go On.
Consider and briefly answer the following questions. Explain your opinion.
1) What is your opinion on Freddie Mercury keeping his illness out of the public eye until the end?
2) Do you think photographers and journalists interested in sensationalism should be allowed to spy on the private life of prominent persons? What are the limits?
