12:00 p.m. - 12:45 p.m. — H3/JWho’s Afraid of Data Management?‘Data Management’ as a broad idea, couldn’t be simpler. It’s the administrative process by which required information is acquired, validated, stored, protected, and processed, and by which its accessibility, reliability, and timeliness is ensured to satisfy the needs of the data users. That being said, perhaps the biggest challenge is what to do if the data you are managing is incomplete, inconsistent, late, unavailable from the normal sources, etc. How do you resolve these conflicts? How do you source data to fill gaps? How do you structure the data when all of the sources publish with different standards? Who does the regulator hold responsible if the data you are sourcing is wrong? … Suddenly things are not quite so ‘simple’.

3:35 p.m. - 4:20 p.m. — H3/JCreating and Capturing Value: Content Provider PerspectivesThe creators and owners of original content are constantly seeking ways to add value to their products. A parallel challenge is to develop and maintain forward-looking data policies and licenses that capture value from present day data uses and anticipate changes in the future. In this session, data providers will discuss how they add value to existing products and develop new ones, and how they determine proper commercial terms and packaging for new and enhanced products. The panelists will discuss the opportunities that they see for their products and services and the commercial factors that they consider when deciding what to build and what to charge for it. Themes that will be considered include the impact of technology, the regulatory landscape (both how it creates product opportunities and affects data providers commercial practices), and the business challenges and opportunities around delayed data (e.g. CFD traders and EOD valuation tools), as well as what ultimately counts as a licensable action.

The panelists will share their perspectives on innovative and forward thinking licensing models. We will identify data providers’ “greatest hits” – policy approaches that are clear, easy to administer and consistent with the provider’s interests. There won’t be griping about the past or present; it’s all about where can we go to a better future. The speakers will discuss the changes and developments in data licensing and policies that have (and would) benefit all parties and how better policies drive lower costs of administration and improved ability to assure compliant usage.

9:50 a.m. - 10:35 a.m. — H3/JDoing Well by Doing Good: The Rise of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) DataAt first glance ESG appears to be the most crunchy-granola of topics, but involved consumers and providers are becoming finely attuned to real market forces currently affecting business decisions. This exploration will begin with a short explanation of the definition of ESG and how it is utilized, including the source and nature of the demand, and how data is gathered, tracked, measured and audited. The panel will then delve into the kinds of standards that are emerging and who is supporting them as well as who is not. Finally, the discussion will coalesce around the question of whether ESG has legs for the long haul. Certain global sectors are retreating from the environmental and social standards that underpin ESG data, while others are participating in hitherto unseen investment activism. Which view will prevail and where does that leave ESG?

ROUNDTABLES — H1

Roundtable #1: Addressing The Regulatory Challenge: MiFID II, FRTB, Basel & GDPRMammoth regulatory changes will impact both financial institutions and corporations in the next 24 months. They are a far broader and go much deeper than previous iterations or related regulatory requirements. MiFID II alone is redrawing the financial services eco-system in Europe and touching practitioners around the globe. FRTB has been adopted globally and requires the use of advanced data modeling, processing, and mapping processes and systems in order to comply. Furthermore FRTB is reliant on key MiFID II data outputs and ties directly to Basel and inter-related capital allocation restrictions. GDPR will impact every firm around the globe, whether they like it or not. In this round table we will discuss and debate the challenges that practitioners face, what they need to do, their data needs, and what the best practices look like.

Ballintraeballintrae.com

Ballintrae is a leading market data management company. We specialise in data assurance services for both clients and data providers. Our deep exchange rules and regulations and client infrastructure expertise gives us a clear edge in helping providers understand client data usage and clients in managing their compliance.

Recently, Ballintrae has become the centre of gravity for a transformative, industry-supported market data management shared service utility. Much of market data management within capital market firms confers no competitive advantage. And monitoring, compliance and reporting can act as a significant drag on profitability. An industry-wide shared service utility is the logical answer to this issue. As the investment banking industry becomes more aware and familiar with sharing functions across the ecosystem, a shared service utility will provide an unapparelled high quality service upon which it can rely for all market data management needs – along with the obvious advantages of much lower costs. Similarly, exchanges will be able to rely on clients being compliant once they are in a shared service utility – a clear advantage in saving of auditing costs and greater transparency of data usage.
