Welcome to Dorking FC at Westhumble - our home venue for what promises to be quite
a season in the history of Dorking FC, both on and off the field.
More of that in a moment, but first I would like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors today - all the players, management, staff and supporters of Balham.
I’m sure both clubs will be keen to get the win tonight and begin a good cup run. As we saw last year with our run to the final of the Southern Combination Cup, a cup final brings pride to the club even in an average league season, and gives all the players and supporters a day to enjoy. Like other teams that have joined Combined Counties from the Surrey Elite League, Balham have proved more than capable of competing well at this level and have made a strong start to the season. So I’m sure it will be a competitive game this evening.
We always knew that, with a new manager and a renewed focus on developing local and youthful players, things would take a bit of time to gel this season. And as each week goes by, we’re seeing another encouraging facet of our emerging squad. In early games, we saw some good play undermined by mistakes, meaning we didn’t always get what we deserved. And we also saw some top class performances, taking the game to our opponents, as with the wins over Worcester Park and Frimley Green. Last weekend at Epsom Athletic, we saw us dig in and come from behind to get a result for the first time, despite being below par for much of the game.
It’s a long hard season and it’s the nature of sport that there will always be days where the team, for one reason or another, doesn’t play with the

intensity or ability we would like. The important thing is how the team deals with that – so enormous credit must go to manager Danny Fox and all his staff, along with the players, for handling that situation so well and turning things around to earn the win on Saturday.
There’s undoubtedly much more to come from both the management team and this group of players. Importantly, the new look team, the club’s aims and the style of play are clearly appealing to local people. More than half our team is from Dorking or the immediately surrounding villages and it’s probably no coincidence that our attendances so far this year are running at roughly double the average for clubs in our league. Thank you very much for your support – it means a lot and is really important as we all work to revitalise this great old club for the benefit of the whole town.
I would also like to thank our Dorking FC Matchmakers – the team of volunteers from the community who have helped make sure that everything runs smoothly at our home games here at Westhumble, giving spectators a warm welcome. The Matchmakers are everything this club is about. If you’d like to be a part of it, then please just talk to the volunteers behind the bar, or email [email protected].
My final thanks this week must go to Marc White, Jeremy Pain, Chris Moon and all the Dorking Wanderers staff for making the fantastic and
picturesque ground they’ve built here available to us. Both clubs are working together to promote grassroots football in the local area with the utmost enthusiasm.
This month has seen a landmark event in the 136-year history of Dorking FC. After some false dawns, the builders have moved in and work has begun on rebuilding our ancestral home ground at Meadowbank. That means we’ll be back playing there at the start of the 2017-8 season.
The rebuilding of Meadowbank with a new clubhouse for the Chicks and a state-of-the-art artificial grass pitch is exciting not just for Dorking FC, but also for the whole community. As well as once again being the home of the Chicks, the new Meadowbank will also be the home venue for Dorking Wanderers, a training facility for local youth clubs, and the headquarters of Surrey FA - putting Dorking FC at the heart of a new hub for football in the county and giving a real boost to the town centre.
So there’s plenty to look forward to. But, for the here and now, we hope you enjoy the game and your visit to Dorking FC this evening – and look forward to welcoming you back here again soon.
Kind Regards
Alan GoutChairman, Dorking FC

Good evening and welcome to Westhumble for tonight’s cup match against Combined
Counties League new boys Balham. I would like to extend a warm welcome Greg Cruttwell, his players and the officials of Balham.
Having known Greg for a few years and followed their progress as a club from their Surrey Elite days, I’m sure our visitors will have a solid first season at this level. Their players have always tended to be technically gifted, hard working and - most importantly – loyal. So, in many ways, they are very similar to the club we are in the course of building here at Dorking.
Things have looked rather more positive for us in recent weeks, with league wins against Frimley Green and Epsom Athletic. And although the start was disappointing in the FA Vase game against Beckenham Town, I thought we went on to put in a spirited performance against a very established side who play at the level above us.
To come from 1-0 down and claim victory on Saturday also showed that we have character throughout the squad and sometimes, when all else fails, that will be enough to get you through.
Much like today’s visitors, our youth section is beginning to flourish and congratulations are due to Steve Lunn, Simon Coffey and Nick Torpey for

the recent FA Youth Cup victory against Guildford City.
Without doubt, there are some promising local players making their way through the Dorking youth development pipeline - with current U18s Ryan Lunn and Jack Wisbey already making a mark in the first team, and James Herouvin posing a genuine threat this season following his graduation from last year’s youth team. Hopefully they will be joined later this season by some more of their youth squad teammates but, regardless of exactly when those players progress through to the first team, the future is definitely bright.
I’d like to finish by congratulating our first team coach Matt Dilger and his fiancée, Sharna Rutley-Stent of Dorking FC Ladies, on their engagement this week. Matt informs me it’s the best signing he’s ever made!
I hope you enjoy the game.

DFC PLAYER PROFILE
OWENHUNTE
Arriving at the club this summer, it’s been a busy two months for Owen Hunte who’s been
rapidly adapting to his new team mates while also getting himself back to fitness, following a bad back injury in November that stopped him playing for most of last season.
“My game’s about pace, strength and holding up the ball,” Owen says. So, for the 25 year old personal trainer who came through the ranks at Walton and Hesham Academy, fitness is vital. So it’s no surprise that the Dorking faithful have seen Owen get more and more influential in games as he gets back into the swing of regular football, culminating in an excellent battling performance in the 2-1 win over Frimley at the start of the month.
One person Owen hasn’t had to get to know since joining the Chicks is the first team manager, Danny Fox. Having worked together at Burnham and Sheerwater, the pair knew each other well. Danny knew all the attributes Owen would bring to a team competing in the Combined Counties Legaue, and Owen has absolute trust in the boss.
“I was trying to get back fit when Danny called and asked me what I was doing this season after my injury lay-off,” Owen says. “I’ve a lot of respect for Danny as a coach, he’s always improved me a a player and, even when we weren’t working together, he would still offer advice and guide me. So I didn’t hesitate to join him at Dorking.”
Eight games into the season, Owen’s optimistic about the Chicks’ prospects. “It’s a very tight league with a long way still to go, most teams in the middle aren’t too far ahead so I’m confident that, even with a new youthful squad, we can get another top 8 finish this year.”
Owen enjoys the routine of the season. Ask him what he likes most about playing the non-league game and he says, “I’ve always done it and it gives you something to work towards each week.”
And what’s the worst thing about the game at this level?
“Absolutely nothing,” he says. “It’s football!”

A slow start ultimately cost Dorking the opportunity to upset the odds against higher league opponents in
the FA Vase. Despite giving their visitors some cause for concern in a first half purple patch, Beckenham’s clinical finishing was enough to see off the Chicks’ resistance.
With the game being played in front a bumper Sunday afternoon crowd, Dorking’s biggest of the season so far, the Chicks began the game rather easy like Sunday morning, lacking in tempo, sitting off their Southern Counties East Premier Division opponents and retreating deep into their own half.
But still it was the Chicks who registered the first clear chance of the game - a delightful corner from Owen Hunte sailed over the Beckenham defence for Brandon Watts to knock down to George Knight, but he could only poke the ball into the keeper’s hands.
The scare roused Beckenham who responded with two goals in quick succession. The first came on 6 minutes with Marvin Alebiosu released down the right and, as he ran into the box, he used his strength to hold off the defensive challenge and pull the ball back for Louis Sprosen who drilled it into the bottom corner of the Dorking net.
Two minutes later and Beckenham doubled their lead. A hanging cross from the right was met by Sprosen to power into the net with a free header.
With just ten minutes gone and the Chicks already 2-0 down, supporters enjoying the September sun at Westhumble could be forgiven for fearing the worst - particularly when Beckenham came close to a third by rattling the woodwork. But Dorking began to settle, pushing further upfield and becoming less wasteful with possession.
Chances came the Chicks’ way and the reward arrived on 39 minutes as another delightful delivery from Hunte found Kieran Lunn at the far post and the captain duly headed across the keeper and into the net.
Having enjoyed the best of the game so far, Beckenham appeared rattled to find themselves just one goal ahead and Dorking began to press for a first half equaliser. Chances
followed for Hunte following a run into the box, for Darrell Mothee with a volley just wide of the near post, and with a Richard Webber free kick.
Dorking finished the half much the stronger and with high hopes of turning the game around.
The optimism lasted until the hour mark, when Beckenham again showed their ruthlessness in front of goal. A corner was swung in from the right, and the poorly marked Alebiosu made no mistake with his near post header.
To their credit, Dorking - now fielding teenagers Jack Wisbey and James Herouvin as substitutes - refused to give up the chase. Kieran Lunn ran half the length of the pitch and cut the ball back to Mothee, whose first time left foot shot went over the bar; two corners in quick succession went agonisingly close across the front of the Beckenham goal mouth.
With the Chicks chasing the game to the end, they were vulnerable at the back and Hassan Jalloh took advantage to score a one-on-one with the last kick of the game. The fourth goal was a little harsh on Dorking, but sealed a deserved win for the visitors.

Agritty second half comeback earned the Chicks a third league win of the season at Epsom Athletic.
The early stages of the game gave little indication that Dorking could earn a second successive league victory, as the youthful Chicks turned in an uncharacteristically lacklustre performance, with little in terms of quality and too many errors.
Epsom Athletic, without a win since mid-August, took full advantage winning tackles all over the pitch and it was no surprise when they took the lead with just a quarter of an hour gone.
In a scrappy game, it took another ten minutes for the Chicks to muster a first effort on target and, despite going on to exert some sustained pressure, Dorking were unable to create another clear chance before the break.
Whatever manager Danny Fox said in the changing room at half time, it had the desired effect as Dorking emerged for the second half with far more purpose.
A change of personnel also had an impact as the pace upfront of Owen Hunte along with teenagers James Herouvin and Ryan Lunn caused the hosts all manner of problems, providing more space for the Dorking midfielders to get a grip of the game.
The rewards came just after the hour mark, with two goals in two minutes turning the game on its head.
The first came courtesy of a penalty when the referee spotted an off the ball push in the box. Darrell Mothee stepped up to the spot and, despite the keeper getting a hand to the ball, he couldn’t keep out the Betchworth-based defender’s fierce left footed strike.
Having clawed themselves level, the Chicks then took the
lead through a corner with Paul Gough, captaining the side in the absence of Kieran Lunn, leading by example to net the winner.
In a far more effective second half performance Dorking were unable to extend their lead, leading to some nervy final moments, but the Chicks held on for the points.
Despite not hitting peak performance, the first away win of the season bodes well for Saturday’s visit to Worcester Park in the Cherry Red Records Premier Challenge Cup, before returning home to league action against league leaders Sheerwater on Saturday 1st October.

FIRST SPADE GOES INAT MEADOWBANKCHICKS WILL BE BACK HOME IN 2017
What a difference a couple of years can make.
December 2013 and the roof literally fell in on Dorking FC. With the clubhouse collapsing and structures deemed unsafe, Meadowbank, the Chicks’ home for 60 years, was condemned and the club was forced into a nomadic existence to complete the season’s fixtures. One of the most picturesque and iconic non-league football grounds in the south-east was now a ruin. With the site earmarked for development by a leading supermarket, there seemed little hope that the football ground or the club could survive.
Two seasons later and the future looks rather different.
This month, the ‘first spade’ went in, marking the start of building of the new Meadowbank - a new stadium on the original site. It will see the Chicks return home at the start of the 2017-18 season to a multi-million pound state-of-the-art
ground with a 3G artificial grass pitch providing a boost to grassroots football in and around Dorking, and a real shot in the arm to the town centre.
So what changed in the meantime?
Firstly, Dorking FC came under new ownership in May 2014 as the homeless club was saved from likely extinction by a group of friends - local businessmen and grassroots football enthusiasts – who converted it to a Community Interest Company, meaning the club would now be run as a social enterprise with any assets locked into community benefits. Secondly, the plan for reconnecting the club to the community and working with other clubs to develop local, young talent to achieve their potential in their home town caught the imagination of some visionary officers and Councillors at Mole Valley, who saw the opportunity to create a special facility for the town.
“The First Spade goes in at Meadowbank last week”
“Meadowbank shortly after it was closed in 2013”
As with any major redevelopment, there have been ups, downs and doubts that it would ever get off the ground. But the determination of those involved culminated this week with building work getting underway and, over the next year, we’ll all be able to see the plans become reality.
Speaking at the event to mark the start of construction, Dorking FC Press Director Roger Mahony said, “We had three key aims when we took over the club - to ensure the survival of the Chicks and its 130 year history, to reconnect the club to the local community and run it in the interests of the town, and to ensure Meadowbank remained a football ground with a lasting legacy. The start of rebuilding work today puts that final piece of the jigsaw in place.”
As well as being the home ground of the Dorking FC, the new Meadowbank promises to be once of the most vibrant football hubs in Surrey. Dorking Wanderers, our highly progressive partners in the Dorking Football Development Alliance, will be using the stadium
21
as their home venue, so there’ll be first team football on offer at the ground nearly every Saturday. Also, Surrey FA will be relocating to make Meadowbank their new head office and the ground will provide much needed all-weather training facilities for the area’s youth football clubs - meaning it will be used by around 1000 local boys and girls every week.
“When we first took over the club,” says Roger, “we spoke to several people who remembered Meadowbank opening in 1953. They told us, somewhat misty-eyed, that it had been the pride of the town. With such exciting plans for the use of the new stadium, we can be confident Meadowbank will be the pride of the town once again.”
“Of course, the iconic green stand is gone, and a more modern structure will rise in its place. Some people who’ve followed the club for a long time find that hard, but that was a football ground from the 1950s, and this is a ground that will take us in to the 2050s.”
“We still have our memories of how it was then and now’s the time to make a load of new memories for this and future generations.”

THE HISTORY OFDORKING FC
Football has been played in Dorking since the 1830s. The first matches took place in the street.
An annual game was staged every Shrove Tuesday in the High Street, preceded by a procession led by a band as well as men dressed as women collecting donations and carrying a cross.
On the left of the cross was a red, white and blue football, on the top a gold ball and on the right a red and green football representing the ‘cockerel colours’ of Dorking FC - the same colours we wear proudly today. The Shrove Tuesday game tradition continued until 1905 when it became outlawed - although the club is now looking at ways to reintroduce the historic community event.
Dorking Football Club was founded in 1880, shortly after the FA had defined formal rules for the game, and now lays claim to the title of the oldest senior club in Surrey. The cockerel logo was also immediately adopted as the club’s badge. It still remains there today and is why we are affectionately known as ‘The Chicks’.
The club first played at a pitch on West Bank before moving to Fairfield Drive and then on to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. In 1953 we moved to our current home location at Meadowbank - an iconic, picturesque location just behind the High Street, where the bells of St Martin’s can be heard peeling during the games. The new stadium was the pride of the town with a capacity of 5000, including a stand accommodating 700, opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous.
In 1974 we joined forces with Guildford City to become Guildford & Dorking United FC for an ill-fated three year period, before being reconstituted as Dorking Town FC, before reverting to the traditional named of Dorking FC in 1981.
On the pitch, our record over the years reflects the traditional highs and lows of non-league football, including many notable achievements as well as the occasional despair. In 1955 we became the first
Surrey club to defeat a professional team when we beat Folkestone 3-1 in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup in front of a record crowd of over 4000 spectators.
The late 1980s and early 90s are considered to be our glory years with cup victories and a league title, along with a promotion in 1989 followed by another promotion in 1993 to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. In 1992-3 we won the Southern Counties Combination Cup and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing a thrilling game 3-2 at home to Peter Shilton’s Plymouth Argyle in front of TV cameras and a bumper crowd, many of whom still talk about it today while continuing to support the Chicks with a passion.
We continued to play at Meadowbank until 2013 when the ground was closed by the local authority on health and safety grounds. A lack of investment and years of decay came home to roost and the club, now playing in the Combined Counties League Division One, was forced to leave the town and ground share in Horley.
The future was uncertain for the Chicks but, in early 2014, a new Board of local enthusiasts took over control and set out on an ambitious plan to rebuild the club as a community and social enterprise that would re-establish itself in the town, developing local talent.
An agreement was made with Mole Valley Council for the ground at Meadowbank to be re-developed and Dorking FC have returned to playing in the town this year - initially at Westhumble Playing Fields before finally going home to the new Meadowbank for the 2017-2018 season.
Our new ground will feature the latest 3G artificial playing surface and, as well as having a new clubhouse, the site will also house the new headquarters of Surrey FA. Dorking FC will once again be very much at the centre of football activities in Surrey.

OPPOSITION HISTORY
BALHAM FC
Balham FC was formed in 2011 in order to provide player progression
into open age football for the hugely talented, high achieving age group teams of Balham Blazers FC, which was founded by Greg Cruttwell in 2001.
Having won back-to-back promotions in 2011/12 and 2012/13, Balham did the league and cup double in the Surrey South Eastern Combination in 2013/14.
In 2014/15 Balham finished in a promotion position again in the Surrey Elite Intermediate League however promotion was denied due to Combined Counties League facility requirements not being met.
Having moved to ground share with Cobham FC in order to meet the facility requirements Balham finished as runners up in the SEIFL in 2015/16 and as a result have been promoted to the Combined Counties League for the 2016/17 season.
Having begun on Wimbledon Extension before moving to Cobham,
Balham will be playing at Colliers Wood Utd for the next two seasons, ground sharing with the CCL Premier Division club.
