Welcome to Dorking FC at Westhumble - our home venue for what promises to be quite a season in
the history of Dorking FC, both and off the field.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors today - all the players, management, staff and supporters of Eversley and California.
After today’s game I very much hope you will stay with us (or return if you’re popping home first) for our Race Night. It’s our second social event of the season, organised by Danny and the first team coaches, following the highly successful Quiz Night last September - where, surprisingly enough, it was the Chairman’s team that triumphed!
Dorking FC is being re-established as a club with professional standards, but run on amateur values. That means everyone involved is a volunteer, any profits are reinvested into the club’s facilities and the community (particularly with the financial demands of the return to Meadowbank next year), and the players are unpaid. So these social events are not just a chance for the club to come together - players, staff, committee members, volunteer Matchmakers, supporters, friends and family - but they’re an opportunity for some extra fundraising. The proceeds tonight will be ring-fenced for the first team - a chance to get some extra equipment, training facilities or specialised coaching, and a way to treat the players after their hard work come the end of the season.
So please do come along tonight if you possibly can. The Race Night takes place here in the clubhouse at Westhumble. Admission is free - simply back the horses of your choice and enjoy the bar.
On the field, November got off to a disappointing start here two weeks ago.
We have always spoken about this being a transitional season and the need to be patient as we place our faith in developing youthful and local players who can grow with the club, hopefully representing their home town side for many years to come. That means being relatively unconcerned by individual results as long as we’re seeing

encouraging performances, players coming through and improving and a good playing style. Indeed there have been a number of occasions this year when, even in defeat, we’ve been able to be really proud of our team, knowing they deserved more from the game.
Its probably fair to say that none of that was true for the Balham game here two weeks ago. The team was flat, full of errors - probably the worst performance of the season. At the time, it’s easy for a game like that to shake confidence in our project here. But I’m pleased to say that the team responded well the following Saturday at Staines Lammas, dominating the first half but perhaps showing the lack of experience in the ranks by being unable to see the game out for at least a share of the points.
When going through a sticky patch, it’s sometimes easy to forget just how much progress has been made in a few short months. Since the summer, the first team has established a disciplined approach to training, shows good discipline on the pitch, aspires to a much-improved playing style and has started to provide a genuine pathway with young local talent coming through and establishing themselves in the squad.
It’s been a lot of hard work by Danny Fox and his staff of Chris Wye, Greg Fidele and Matt Dilger to get this far. Their next step will be to attract the right type of experienced player who can blend with the squad we’ve got and add that little bit of know-how and resilience, setting an example the younger players can all learn from. I know that Danny is working exceptionally hard to make that happen as son as possible.
In the meantime, we can be pleased with the groundwork that’s been done. We all want the Chicks to finish as high up the table as possible, but its far more
important that we lay the right foundations to ensure the club can return home to the new Meadowbank stadium next year with a strong local base that provides for incremental growth each season.
Our Under 18s are a key part of the plan and have been supporting the first team well. The measure of success for our youth team isn’t so much the individual results as the number of players that progress to become first team regulars. We’ve already seen the emergence this year of James Herouvin, Ryan Lunn, Jack Wisbey - and, in very recent weeks, Alex Watts and Will Conroy. That’s a tribute to the coaching of Steve Lunn, Nick Torpey and Simon Coffey, the commitment to local youth development shown by the first team management, and - of course - to the young players themselves. The blueprint is established - I’m sure many more players will follow this path to the first team in due course.
If you would like to watch some of our future players in action, there’s a glamorous cup-tie for our U18 development side coming up here at Westhumble next Thursday, 24th November. The Southern Youth League team host Woking FC’s Academy in the Surrey FA Midweek Cup second round, kicking off at 7:45pm. It’s a tough tie, but should be a good night and a fantastic learning opportunity for some of our youngest players. Please come along and give them support.
I hope you enjoy the game and your visit to Dorking FC today – and look forward to welcoming you back here again soon.
Kind Regards
Alan GoutChairman, Dorking FC

Good afternoon and welcome to Westhumble for today’s game against Eversley and
California. I would like to welcome Phil Ruggles, his players and their officials for what I’m sure will be another hard fought encounter.
Our last home game was not our finest hour, so it was good to see a positive start last week at Staines Lammas. I was really pleased for Andy Miller who notched his second goal this season. Andy’s a player whose hard work and talent often goes unnoticed.
There were some promising moments throughout the match. Had Paul Davies’ “goal” been allowed at 1-0, early in the second half, I feel the game may have turned out differently. But, unfortunately for us, it was disallowed and we didn’t go on to do enough to bring the result home.
This season was always going to be a slow process of building a strong foundation bit by bit, so it’s important that we don’t get disheartened. With the return of more senior players like Kieran Lunn, with Paul Gough returning to training this week and with Brandon Watts soon to follow, I feel we will be coming out of this somewhat turbulent spell sooner than some may believe.
The introduction last week of Dudley Klaton from Epsom Athletic was also definite positive, and I am

hopeful that there will be more players like him to follow as we continue to build up the squad.
After the game tonight, we will be holding our second social of the season - a race night in the Westhumble clubhouse bar from 6.30pm. It will be good to have the opportunity to catch up with you all at length then - rather than the rushed 20 - 30 minutes I usually get to talk to people after a game. We’ll also be raising much needed funds for our club.
I hope you enjoy the game.
Up the Chicks.

Anyone who made the journey to Staines last weekend was rewarded by seeing an absolutely
stunning strike fly into the net off the boot of Andy Miller. It was only his second goal of the season following a similarly assured finish against Cove last month, but a mark of his development this season.
Andy’s return to Dorking FC in the summer marked the start of his third spell with the club, having first played for the Chicks as a 17 year old in the Combined Counties Premier Division, before a brief return under the previous management last season. And this time he’s getting the chance to establish himself as a vital and creative part of the midfield.
“I was thinking of taking a year out of football this season,” says Andy, “But Darrell Mothee came to play for the new manager, and he brought me down too.”
Asked why he had decided not to play this year, Andy’s reassuringly honest. “Laziness,” he says - before adding, “But I’m glad now that I’m playing.”
That pleasure in playing comes despite some
disappointing results for the Chicks, but Andy sees the long term plan for the club.
“Realistically, this season is all about building for next year,” he says. “Of course we want to get as high as we can, but we’re developing a new young local squad and we’re on a massive learning curve. The important thing is to play through this year and be as strong as we possibly can be for when we return to Meadowbank next season.”
Despite Andy beginning to get an eye for goal, recent results have been a little disappointing. “We’re in a bit of a rut and it’s hard to say why,” Andy says, “but we just have to keep working a bit harder all over the pitch and we’ll get out of it.”
So are there no regrets about deciding to return to the Chicks this summer? Is there anything Andy’s not enjoying?
He laughs.
“Staying in on a Friday night. But it’s worth it just to play with Jimmy Brazil.”

Remember, remember the 5th November... On second thoughts, let’s try and wipe it from our
memories entirely.
A flat Bonfire Night performance, easily the worst of the season, ensured the only fireworks at Westhumble were in the home dressing room at full time, as the Chicks deservedly crashed to their biggest defeat for two years.
The first twenty minutes gave little indication of the collapse and carnage that was to follow as Dorking matched their south London opponents, and even had the best chance to take the lead on 23 minutes as handball in the box gave the Chicks a clear penalty. With six goals in October, Jimmy Brazil was a sensible choice to take the kick, but a great stop by the Balham keeper, diving to his right, denied the Dorking captain.
The missed opportunity looked even more costly just five minutes later as a good strike from Thomas Fosse on the edge of the area found its way under Jake Nimmo and into the Dorking net.
But the lead lasted just one minute. a free kick close to the corner flag was whipped in by Darrell Mothee, avoiding everyone in the penalty area and sneaking in at the far post to pull Dorking level.
It led to a strong period of pressure by the Chicks, but hopes of seizing control of the game were extinguished by costly defensive frailties in a three minute period before the break.
On 42 minutes, a simple cross and it was Fosse again who was allowed to get in front of the defender to restore the Balham lead. Three minutes later and Jerome Boncoeur was left unmarked in the Dorking box to make it 3-1 at the break.
There was no prospect of a second half revival as Boncoeur made it 4-1 on 50 minutes. Balham now hit their stride playing some fine, free-
flowing football on the excellent Westhumble pitch. But it took until 83 minutes before they scored again. Then the floodgates opened on the beleaguered Chicks as Morgan Roberts-Watson, Jakub Trzcinski and Hamish Free added goals in quick succession - Frew’s unstoppable shot from the right possibly the pick of the afternoon.
There have been occasions this season when Dorking’s youthful and developing team has played well but failed to get any reward. But, while there’s little doubt that the Chicks met an excellent Balham side on peak form, the team will know that the game cannot be explained away as anything more than a very poor performance.

A strong first half performance wasn’t enough for Dorking as the Chicks came away from Staines Lammas
empty handed.
The game hinged on a disallowed goal in the second half as Danny Fox’s youthful side, showing a lack of confidence after a recent winless streak, failed to extend their early lead and then lacked the self-belief to overcome conceding a 54th minute equaliser.
With injuries and absences taking their toll, Danny Fox fielded two debutants in another youthful line up. Impressive local 17 year old centre back Will Conroy was handed a second start since stepping up from the Unde 18s and there was a first Senior appearance another Dorking U18 Ollie Turner, among four teenagers. Dudley Klaton, a new signing from Epsom Athletic, anchored the midfield.
Dorking started brightly while Staines Lammas appeared sluggish and the Chicks took full advantage on 8 minutes. After good work by the returning Kieran Lunn, the ball broke to Andy Miller in a central position 25 yards from goal. The Brockham-based midfielder unleashed an absolute screamer that flew into the top right corner to give Dorking a 1-0 lead.
For much of the first half the Chicks looked comfortable, enjoying the majority of possession, Hunte and Wisbey looking unpassable at full back and Conroy coolly clearing up any ball that broke through. But for all the midfield control and possession, the Chicks rarely threatened as moves broke down in the final third.
The best opportunity to extend the lead came following a fine one-touch move as Turner, Paul Davies and Miller combined to scythe through the Staines defence, putting Miller through, but his first touch took the ball just marginally too far in front of him.
With a slender 1-0 half time lead, the travelling supporters were wondering at the break if the Chicks would regret not making more of their dominance, but it was Dorking again who provided the early threat in the second half. On 51 minutes, a deflected Jimmy Brazil header eluded the keeper but the deflection took the pace off the ball and, as it crept towards the goal line, Paul Davies gave it the final tap into the
net to make sure - but was rightly adjudged to have done so from an offside position.
It proved a pivotal moment as, from potentially doubling their lead, Dorking found themselves pegged back to 1-1 just three minutes later. Staines Lammas got behind the Chicks defence a little too easily and the cross from the right was missed by two defenders, leaving Harridge the simplest of finishes from six yards.
The confidence visibly drained from the Chicks who became disjointed and dispirited. Only a superb double stop by Jack Wisbey kept Dorking on terms as he headed off the line from a corner before rushing out to block the rebound. But, with the ball failing to stick up front and leading to more pressure on the Dorking defence, there was an inevitability about Staines Lammas taking the lead on 72 minutes - a fine looping cross to the far post was headed in by Harridge, stealing in unmarked on the blind side.
The Chicks looked to get back in the game but chances were few and far between as play was broken up by a series of niggly fouls. A great cross-field ball from deep by Miller picked out Jimmy Brazil but he was just crowded out between two defenders, and an injury time strike from Klaton on the edge of the box floated just over the bar as Staines Lammas saw out the win with maturity.
Dorking are back in action with a home league game next week, when they welcome promotion challengers Eversley & California to Westhumble. The game kicks off at 3pm, and will be followed by a Race Night in the clubhouse, open to the public with free admission.

THE HISTORY OFDORKING FC
Football has been played in Dorking since the 1830s. The first matches took place in the street.
An annual game was staged every Shrove Tuesday in the High Street, preceded by a procession led by a band as well as men dressed as women collecting donations and carrying a cross.
On the left of the cross was a red, white and blue football, on the top a gold ball and on the right a red and green football representing the ‘cockerel colours’ of Dorking FC - the same colours we wear proudly today. The Shrove Tuesday game tradition continued until 1905 when it became outlawed - although the club is now looking at ways to reintroduce the historic community event.
Dorking Football Club was founded in 1880, shortly after the FA had defined formal rules for the game, and now lays claim to the title of the oldest senior club in Surrey. The cockerel logo was also immediately adopted as the club’s badge. It still remains there today and is why we are affectionately known as ‘The Chicks’.
The club first played at a pitch on West Bank before moving to Fairfield Drive and then on to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. In 1953 we moved to our current home location at Meadowbank - an iconic, picturesque location just behind the High Street, where the bells of St Martin’s can be heard peeling during the games. The new stadium was the pride of the town with a capacity of 5000, including a stand accommodating 700, opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous.
In 1974 we joined forces with Guildford City to become Guildford & Dorking United FC for an ill-fated three year period, before being reconstituted as Dorking Town FC, before reverting to the traditional named of Dorking FC in 1981.
On the pitch, our record over the years reflects the traditional highs and lows of non-league football, including many notable achievements as well as the occasional despair. In 1955 we became the first
Surrey club to defeat a professional team when we beat Folkestone 3-1 in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup in front of a record crowd of over 4000 spectators.
The late 1980s and early 90s are considered to be our glory years with cup victories and a league title, along with a promotion in 1989 followed by another promotion in 1993 to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. In 1992-3 we won the Southern Counties Combination Cup and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing a thrilling game 3-2 at home to Peter Shilton’s Plymouth Argyle in front of TV cameras and a bumper crowd, many of whom still talk about it today while continuing to support the Chicks with a passion.
We continued to play at Meadowbank until 2013 when the ground was closed by the local authority on health and safety grounds. A lack of investment and years of decay came home to roost and the club, now playing in the Combined Counties League Division One, was forced to leave the town and ground share in Horley.
The future was uncertain for the Chicks but, in early 2014, a new Board of local enthusiasts took over control and set out on an ambitious plan to rebuild the club as a community and social enterprise that would re-establish itself in the town, developing local talent.
An agreement was made with Mole Valley Council for the ground at Meadowbank to be re-developed and Dorking FC have returned to playing in the town this year - initially at Westhumble Playing Fields before finally going home to the new Meadowbank for the 2017-2018 season.
Our new ground will feature the latest 3G artificial playing surface and, as well as having a new clubhouse, the site will also house the new headquarters of Surrey FA. Dorking FC will once again be very much at the centre of football activities in Surrey.

OPPOSITION HISTORY
EVERSLEY ANDCALIFORNIA FC
California Youth Football Club was formed in 1975 when a group of parents brought
together an Under 8’s team based in the California area of Wokingham, Berkshire and from where the Club takes its name.
The Club played in its early days in the Bracknell & District Boys League, and was one of the founder members of the East Berks Youth League formed in the 1990’s.
Providing football for all age groups, the Club expanded to become one of the largest youth soccer clubs in the area, and in the year 2000 it was the first Berks & Bucks FA affiliated club in the area to be awarded the FA Charter status, also winning the South of England FA Charter Merit Award in 2002; it is currently an FA Charter Development Club.
California FC introduced girls’ soccer to the area in 2000 and with over 30 teams began a search for a new headquarters. This culminated with the award of the largest ever grant from the Football Foundation for grass roots soccer in 2006 to enable the Club to develop 15 acres of reclaimed land and construct superior playing fields and facilities at our current base in Fox Lane, Eversley, North Hampshire where we commenced playing matches in the 2008/09 season.
The Club operates a structured progression for youth players in the local community
from a soccer school for the very young, through the age groups from Under 7’s up to and including Under 18’s, providing soccer coaching and matches for all abilities.
The Club runs an annual tournament supported by teams from far afield, soccer camps and specialist coaching courses. We are also a partnership club with the local Reading FC Championship Division club. California FC teams currently play in the East Berks Youth and North East Hants Youth Leagues and the Club is actively and progressively introducing the new FA Development Guidelines for grass roots soccer.
California FC had established strong links with local senior club Eversley FC and when the senior club, originally formed in 1910, returned to play in Eversley in 2008, the clubs merged in 2012 to form Eversley & California Football Club.
