Welcome to Dorking FC at Westhumble - our home venue for what promises to be quite

a season in the history of Dorking FC, both on and off the field.

More of that in a moment, but first I would like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors today - all the players, management, staff and supporters of Frimley Green.

We’re renewing acquaintances with a few familiar faces. Dan Huxley proved a combative midfielder for the Chicks last season, before hanging up his boots just after Christmas and moving into the manager’s post at Frimley. With Dorking rebuilding the squad for our return to playing in the town, a few of last season’s players decided to move on to join Dan at Frimley. They were all part of our club at a difficult time, when the future was far less clear and bright than it is now, and we’re pleased to see them back here today.

It’s been a difficult start to the season for our youthful new-look team, but it was always likely to be that way.

We’re putting the foundations in place to reconnect Dorking FC to the local community, offering opportunities to local talented players to reach their potential while playing for their hometown club. Already more than half our team is from Dorking or the immediately surrounding villages. On top of that, we have a new manager in Danny Fox with a real track record of developing young players.

But this is a long-term plan, so it will only come to fruition over time. It requires a little patience from the Board, the management, the players and supporters – but, when the plan pays off, we’ll have re-established this historic Surrey club in its

traditional Meadowbank home, with a team that is truly representative of the town’s local talent, playing an entertaining style of football on a state-of-the-art pitch.

So a bumpy start to the season has to be seen in the context of our long-term aims on and off the pitch. We’ll stay focused and achieve our objectives.

The enthusiasm there’s been in the town for our return after nearly three years away has been fantastic and I’d like to thank you for your continued support – it means a lot and is really important as we all work on revitalising this great old club for the benefit of the whole town.

I would also like to thank our Dorking FC Matchmakers – the team of volunteers from the community who have helped make sure that everything runs smoothly at our home games here at Westhumble, giving spectators a warm welcome. The Matchmakers are everything this club is about. If you’d like to be a part of it, then please just talk to the volunteers behind the bar, or email [email protected].

My final thanks this week must go to Marc White, Jeremy Pain, Chris Moon and all the Dorking Wanderers staff for making the fantastic and

picturesque ground they’ve built here available to us. Both clubs are working together to promote grassroots football in the local area with the utmost enthusiasm.

I’ll finish with one bit of news that we’ve all been waiting a long time for.

By the time we’re back here at Westhumble next weekend for our FA Vase tie, rebuilding work will be underway at Meadowbank. That means we’ll be back home at the start of next season As well as once again being the home of the Chicks, the new Meadowbank will also be the home venue for Dorking Wanderers, a training facility for local youth clubs, and the headquarters of Surrey FA - putting Dorking FC at the heart of a new hub for football in the county and giving a real boost to the town centre.

So there’s plenty to look forward to. But, for the here and now, we hope you enjoy the game and your visit to Dorking FC today – and look forward to welcoming you back here again soon.

Kind Regards

Alan GoutChairman, Dorking FC

Good afternoon and welcome to Westhumble. Many of our opponents today will be no

strangers to Dorking regulars, with manager Dan Huxley and a large number of their contingent having played at the club last season. We welcome you all back, along with the rest of your squad and officials.

Dan has been a good friend of mine since I moved to Surrey - but I’m sure for both of us, come 3pm, friendship will be suspended and I sincerely hope I hold the bragging rights by the end of the afternoon!

The Bank Holiday weekend proved a frustrating one for us. We had an uncharacteristic display against Ash United followed by a fantastic performance against Cobham - only to fail to get the deserved result.

Losing our goalkeeper Tom Day with a suspected broken wrist on Monday was a big blow, and we’re waiting now for the results of his X-ray to determine when he will be back in the number 1 jersey. Meanwhile, we have signed Jake Nimmo, a young local keeper who came highly recommended following his progression through the Leatherhead FC youth set-up. Welcome Jake.

This week, we also welcome back a member of last

DFC PLAYER PROFILE

RYAN LUNN

Look at the picture of Ryan Lunn as a young boy, proudly wearing the old green and white

hooped Dorking FC shirt at a time when his peer group would be wearing Chelsea or Man United tops – and there’s only one club he was ever going to play for when he grew up.

Perhaps, the only remarkable thing is that he became a Dorking FC first team player at such a young age.

Ryan’s rapid rise into the Chicks’ senior side sets a model for all local young players. Dorking born and bred, and playing his football at thriving grassroots club Brockham Badgers, he graduated to the Chicks’ Under 18s last season, coached by the club’s legendary former striker Steve Lunn – Ryan’s Dad.

With the club keen to see youth players experience senior football, Ryan waited patiently for his chance, sitting on the bench as long as required to get any opportunity he could with the first team – making the most of every substitute appearance, however

brief, and finally getting his first goal for the club in a 4-3 win over Worcester Park last April.

“I always wanted to play for Dorking,” says Ryan, “ever since I watched my Dad playing at Meadowbank. I wanted to be part of it – and now part of taking the club back to Meadowbank and back to where Dorking FC belongs.”

This season, under new boss Danny Fox, Ryan’s had more chance to prove himself. He’s added strength and some bold attacking flair to his pace, tormenting defenders and forcing his way into the starting line up for all five league games so far.

Despite still being eligible for Dorking’s U18s, Ryan’s ambition this season is to nail down a regular first team starting place and see the club match last year’s top eight finish.

“It’s early days and there’s a lot of players getting to know each other,” he says, “but we’re looking to play good football, and it’s only going to get better.”

Dorking Manager Danny Fox remains confident the Chicks will meet their targets for the season, after

a combination of wastefulness in front of goal and inexperience contributed to a heavy home defeat.

The game was lost in a mad two minutes at the start of the second half, following an evenly matched and entertaining first half, full of attacking football from both sides.

For the first fifteen minutes, Dorking produced wave after wave of attack, with attractive and exciting play in front of a large local support. The 17 year-old Ryan Lunn was particularly positive, taking on the Ash defence to get into the box, carving out two great chances –one dragged just wide of the post and the other struck into the side netting when it might have been better to cut the ball back.

Other opportunities went begging – two free kicks from the edge of the box resulting only in corners and a shot from distance by Rishy Vasishta sailing over the bar.

Having survived the early Dorking pressure, Ash came into the ascendancy and sent out an early warning on 17 minutes as the Chicks were caught out 3 on 2 at the back, but the final shot went just wide of the far post.

It was another breakaway that led to Ash taking the lead on 35 minutes, Richard Lediju making no mistake on this occasion.

The young Dorking side looked rattled by conceding after a good start, and only a superb stop by 16 year-old Tom Day, spreading his body wide to block another one-on-one, stopped Ash from extending their lead.

But recovering their composure, the Chicks got themselves back into the game and the equaliser came just before half time as a ball into the box found Owen Hunte who, under pressure, just squeezed it inside the right post.

Any hopes of Dorking pushing on to win in the second half were dashed within four minutes of the restart as two defensive mistakes gifted the game to Ash. Firstly a handball under no pressure led to a free kick that was fired into the net by Dan Cox from just outside the penalty area, and then a loss of possession allowed Tayler Mitchinson to drive forward and ruthlessly rattle the ball past Day.

Only a fine flying save by Tom Day and a block by Brandon Watts kept the score at 3-1, until James Herouvin – another graduate of Dorking’s U18s – came on for his debut and nearly pulled a goal back, his first time strike across the keeper going just past the far post.

As the Chicks continued to try to find a way back into the game, another breakaway allowed Richard Lediju to score his second for Ash on 82 minutes, before substitute Matt Pantony completed the scoring with the last meaningful kick of the game in injury time.

Despite the final score, Danny Fox can still be pleased with improvements in a short space of time in younger individuals – notably Ryan Lunn along with teenagers Jack Wisbey, who showed immense desire while playing in a less familiar wing back role, and Brandon Watts, who had another strong game.

Having been brought in to build a team with a nucleus of youthful, local talent, the manager and those following Dorking closely, know that the new team is very much a work-in-progress. Some more experienced players are still to come in to the squad and should help ensure the Chicks cut out mistakes and play to their considerable potential for the full 90 minutes, rather than in patches as has been the case in the past two games.

Dorking FC: Day, Wisbey, Mothee, Hartt, Watts, Gough, Miller, Vasishta (Longhurst, 76), Hunte (Finn, 82), K Lunn,R Lunn (Herouvin, 58).

A superb second half display left the Chicks with their heads held high - but it wasn’t enough to cancel out

the first half defensive errors and get any points from the game.

The attacking intensity of the Chicks after half time showed the potential of Danny Fox’s new-look, youthful team if they can sustain that level of performance for 90 minutes and cut out the mistakes.

The game began brightly enough for Dorking. Both teams were playing their second game in less than 48 hours, but it was the Chicks who looked sharpest, snapping into challenges and winning the ball throughout the pitch.

But for all their possession, there was a lack of cutting edge in the final third - crosses were miss-hit from good wide positions and attacking moves broke down without a final ball being delivered.

The chances did eventually come. Darrell Mothee set Owen Hunte free on goal, only for the referee’s assistant to raise his flag on what must have been the narrowest of offside decisions. An excellent cross, again from Mothee, bounced up high on the hard pitch and just over the leaping Hunte’s head. And a whipped corner just eluded Brandon Watts at the far post.

Meanwhile, defensive frailties proved costly at the other end as, on 25 minutes, a mix up between keeper and defender left the ball loose for Cobham to slot into the unguarded Dorking net for a 1-0 lead.

There was further misfortune shortly after, when Dorking keeper Tom Day was clattered while claiming a high ball and fell on his arm, forcing him to leave the field with a suspected fracture.

Striker Luke Longhurst came off the bench as stand-in keeper, but there was nothing he could do as the Chicks’ defence showed inexperience by failing to clear their lines, gifting Cobham a second goal just moments before half time.

A well-worked third from Cobham just after the interval appeared to put the result beyond doubt but, unbowed, Dorking began to play with an determination unseen previously.

Andy Miller was winning midfield battles and setting up attacks, substitute James Herouvin added some extra attacking bite, while Richard Webber came on for his first appearance, bringing experience and an intelligent use of the ball from deep.

Quick thinking by Mothee at a free kick set Lunn free on the right and he crossed low for Brandon Watts to pull a goal back for Dorking.

The Chicks began to believe and peppered the Cobham goal, raising the real prospect of an unlikely comeback. But in truth, it was too little too late, as the home side was able to pack the penalty box and block everything Dorking threw at them.

Despite the disappointment, the Chicks came off the pitch knowing they had played their best football of the season so far and in the full knowledge that replicating the second half performance from the very first whistle will surely bring results in the weeks to come.

Dorking FC with a brand new sponsor.

Moorad Choudhry Financial Limited is investing in our club to support the development of Ladies football in Mole Valley.

The highly respected, Surrey-based investment banker and academic Professor Moorad Choudhry is well known for his local sporting passion, supporting AFC Wimbledon and Surrey County Cricket Club, and we’re delighted to have him as a sponsor of Dorking FC as we reconnect the club to the local community.

Moorad is also a big fan of Dorking FC Ladies coach Matt Dilger, having played alongside him at his previous club Priory Old Boys FC.

Dorking FC’s Chief Executive, Jason Rabbetts says, “We’re very grateful to Moorad for his generous sponsorship of our Ladies section. His support will go a long way to funding the facilities needed and keep subscription costs low, so we can make the game accessible at a high standard, to the widest possible range of female participants.”

It’s been quite a journey for the Ladies since joining up with Dorking FC to wear the cockerel

colours at the start of last season.

From struggling to field a full team and being on the wrong side of some rather large scorelines the year before, new recruits and regular training meant the squad started steadily to improve, not just in terms of results, but also in attitude and morale.

By the end of the year, Dorking FC Ladies were recording some excellent wins and finished the season at fifth place in the league.

So they go into the 2016-17 season with high expectations.

With a squad of over 20 players, the team is getting stronger throughout pre-season. In keeping with Dorking FC’s vision for the men’s first team, the Ladies combines talented local teenagers with some more experienced players coming in from nearby clubs such as Crawley Wasps, Carshalton and the Chelsea academy.

The successful development of Dorking FC Ladies is in no small part to the tireless work and enthusiasm of up and coming local coach, Matt Dilger.

Matt set the course to lift the Ladies out of their previous troubled times, building loyalty by

encouraging and improving the players both as individuals and as a team. And now the squad is taking a lead in the promotion of Ladies football in Surrey and attracting high calibre local players.

“The new players coming in will help us push on to the next level,” says Matt. “It means the girls have to work harder and earn their positions, creating a strong, competitive squad with high levels of talent and ability.”

Matt Dilger’s abilities have been recognised by Dorking’s new manager Danny Fox, who wasted no time offering him a coaching role as part of his first team staff.

To support Matt as he divides his time between his two roles, the Ladies have recruited Ben Smythe as a coach. Ben is highly experienced, having played with clubs including both Watford and Southend, before injury meant he turned his attention to coaching,

Matt says, “I’m delighted to have a coach with the experience of Ben joining us as part of the Ladies, His expertise is bound to ensure the players have every opportunity to develop even further this year.”

You can keep up to date with the progress of the Ladies in the matchday programme throughout the season.

THE HISTORY OFDORKING FC

Football has been played in Dorking since the 1830s. The first matches took place in the street.

An annual game was staged every Shrove Tuesday in the High Street, preceded by a procession led by a band as well as men dressed as women collecting donations and carrying a cross.

On the left of the cross was a red, white and blue football, on the top a gold ball and on the right a red and green football representing the ‘cockerel colours’ of Dorking FC - the same colours we wear proudly today. The Shrove Tuesday game tradition continued until 1905 when it became outlawed - although the club is now looking at ways to reintroduce the historic community event.

Dorking Football Club was founded in 1880, shortly after the FA had defined formal rules for the game, and now lays claim to the title of the oldest senior club in Surrey. The cockerel logo was also immediately adopted as the club’s badge. It still remains there today and is why we are affectionately known as ‘The Chicks’.

The club first played at a pitch on West Bank before moving to Fairfield Drive and then on to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. In 1953 we moved to our current home location at Meadowbank - an iconic, picturesque location just behind the High Street, where the bells of St Martin’s can be heard peeling during the games. The new stadium was the pride of the town with a capacity of 5000, including a

stand accommodating 700, opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous.

In 1974 we joined forces with Guildford City to become Guildford & Dorking United FC for an ill-fated three year period, before being reconstituted as Dorking Town FC, before reverting to the traditional named of Dorking FC in 1981.

On the pitch, our record over the years reflects the traditional highs and lows of non-league football, including many notable achievements as well as the occasional despair. In 1955 we became the first Surrey club to defeat a professional team when we beat Folkestone 3-1 in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup in front of a record crowd of over 4000 spectators.

The late 1980s and early 90s are considered to be our glory years with cup victories and a league title, along with a promotion in 1989 followed by another promotion in 1993 to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. In 1992-3 we won the Southern Counties Combination Cup and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing a thrilling game 3-2 at home to Peter Shilton’s Plymouth Argyle in front of TV cameras and a bumper crowd, many of whom still talk about it today while continuing to support the Chicks with a passion.

We continued to play at Meadowbank until 2013 when the ground was closed by the local authority

on health and safety grounds. A lack of investment and years of decay came home to roost and the club, now playing in the Combined Counties League Division One, was forced to leave the town and ground share in Horley.

The future was uncertain for the Chicks but, in early 2014, a new Board of local enthusiasts took over control and set out on an ambitious plan to rebuild the club as a community and social enterprise that would re-establish itself in the town, developing local talent.

An agreement was made with Mole Valley Council

for the ground at Meadowbank to be re-developed and Dorking FC have returned to playing in the town this year - initially at Westhumble Playing Fields before finally going home to the new Meadowbank for the 2017-2018 season.

Our new ground will feature the latest 3G artificial playing surface and, as well as having a new clubhouse, the site will also house the new headquarters of Surrey FA. Dorking FC will once again be very much at the centre of football activities in Surrey.

OPPOSITION HISTORY

FRIMLEY GREEN FC

The club was founded in 1919 and currently play at Frimley Green Recreation Ground.

The present clubhouse was erected in 1972 when ‘The Green’ played in the London Spartan League and used a pitch on the lower part of the park with the changing rooms where the car park now is. A few years later a new pitch was laid adjacent to the clubhouse and changing rooms were added. The Reserve Team joined the Combined Counties League in 1979 and at the start of the 1981/82 season the First Team switched across and Floodlights were installed for the first time. The Club competed in the League for a period of 15 years, during which time they won the Dan Air Elite Cup and the Reserves won the Division One Challenge Cup.

Due to the financial situation in 1994 the club voluntarily dropped down into junior football into the Surrey Intermediate League (Western). The next four seasons saw a period of rebuilding and repaying debts and the club were finally accepted into the Surrey Premier League in 1999, after finishing Runners-up and winning the League Cup. Off the field new Floodlights were installed and a Boardroom created within the Clubhouse.

A three year spell followed, in the renamed Surrey Senior League, which saw the club finish fourth, sixth and Runners –up and attain promotion back into the Combined Counties League where they have played since. Season 2004-05 was the most successful to date, in the Combined Counties League, with the club finishing in 15th Place and amassing 58 points.

Season 2005-06 was very disappointing on the playing front but we managed to avoid finishing in a relegation position, however, despite substantial ground improvements we were demoted on ‘ground grading’, to make way for 7 clubs from the old Ryman Division two. In the next 4 seasons in Division One we had mixed fortunes, finishing 6th

at the end of season 2007/08 but then in season 2008/09 finished 3rd from bottom but had our most successful season ever in the FA Vase, reaching the third round and won an FA Cup match for the first time.

In season 2009/10 we managed to finish high enough up the table to retain our FA Cup place but 2010/11 was a poor season. 2011/12 saw the appointment of Paul Miles and Ian Maynard mid-season and in 2012/13 we won the Division One title and won 3 FA Vase games along the way. In 2013/14 Paul and Ian left us and Derren Martin.

2014/15 was a turbulent season which saw Derren Martin replaced by Paul Miles who in turn was replaced by Phil Ruggles & Andy Clement but they were unable to stop the slide in fortunes which led to relegation. 2015/16 saw further changes, a mid-table finish and the appointment of Dan Huxley as Manager for 2016/17.
