At Rise: Percy is talking to Mary by the water clock.

OSTANESWhen I realized that everyone’s doppleganger from the centuries was down here, Idecided to pick some of the more famous ones to be my lieutenants - that way, I havemore interesting conversations.. (The DOPPLEGANGER SOUND)Here comes one, now!

(ENTER NAPOLEON THE DOPPLEGANGER- he appears backwards, turns around, and

haughtily regards them)Look - he’s got presence!

NAPOLEON THE DOPPLEGANGERI mean, I mean.. I’m given these dopplegangers to work with, and you expect me to..take on these gods?

OSTANESThere’s only two of them..

NAPOLEON THE DOPPLEGANGERBut, gods..

OSTANESAnd they’ve taken over the other dopplegangers..

(Napoleon the Doppleganger slowly walks overto them, puts his hand inside his waistcoat,looks out over Lake Brimstone, turns)

NAPOLEON THE DOPPLEGANGER.. and you’re no longer king here, are you Ostanes?

OSTANESKing in name only..

NAPOLEON THE DOPPLEGANGERI’m familiar with that.. is there any.. exile involved?

OSTANESNot that I’m aware of..



NAPOLEON THE DOPPLEGANGERGood, good.. and how many troops do we have?

OSTANESWe have many dopplegangers.. but they’re all on the other side..

NAPOLEON THE DOPPLEGANGERCould be a problem.. although these dopplegangers.. don’t seem to be.. the mostcohesive.. fighting unit..

OSTANESThey’re dopplegangers - they can’t get anything right..

NAPOLEON THE DOPPLEGANGERWell... but, we can use that to our advantage.. since they have the numbers..

OSTANESDon’t forget, we’re dopplegangers, too..

NAPOLEON THE DOPPLEGANGERMeaning?

OSTANESWe might not get it right, either..

(Napoleon the Doppleganger pauses, walksover to Ostanes, looks him up and down)

NAPOLEON THE DOPPLEGANGERMonsieur.. do you know with whom you’re dealing?

OSTANES Napoleon! - or, at least, his doppleganger..

NAPOLEONCorrect - although I died of arsenic poisoning on Elba, I have a chance to rise, again! -now.. one good thing about this campaign.. they don’t have the high ground!

OSTANES

No, they don’t - this is all low ground here - subterranean, if you will..

NAPOLEONI gather.. and what forces do we have at our disposal?

OSTANESYou, me.. maybe the god Hermes.. Hephaestus is a possibility - and we might be able toentice the mortals into supporting us..

NAPOLEON THE DOPPLEGANGERJust once is enough, Monsieur.. is there no justice? - we need a code..

OSTANESI believe you did that..

NAPOLEON THE DOPPLEGANGERIt outlasted me.. we need a war conference - call the gods Hermes and Hephaestus -call the mortals! - I must come up with a plan of attack!

(Turns and goes to Lake Brimstone, looks outover it, hand in his waistcoat)

NAPOLEON THE DOPPLEGANGERAnd I have ideas - since our forces are so few - we need a technological advantageover our opponents - the gods Thantaclos and Hypnos, and the dopplegangers..

OSTANESWhat are you thinking of?

NAPOLEON THE DOPPLEGANGERNot a flying machine, as we are down here - perhaps.. (Turns, put his hand in his waistcoat, thinks).. perhaps an antidote for immortality - if we can render the gods no more long-livedthan us - we can discredit them - and the dopplegangers will turn our way - and forcethose gods back down to their own world..

OSTANESThose are the gods of death and sleeping - Hypnos has put three to sleep this visitalone - including myself, I was powerless - we’ve got to get that poppy away from him -and take that sword from Thantaclos - no telling what destruction he can wreak with it..

DA VINCI THE DOPPLEGANGERImmortality is at the heart of the problem - but I do not know if immortality is of aphysical, or a supernatural, nature - it may be beyond our ability to grasp, let alonediminish it..

Now, is the time to reach above ourselves! - can you not come up with a machine whichcan counter immortality on the battlefield?

DA VINCI THE DOPPLEGANGERFirst, I must study the problem, then I will propose a device which may be able tocounter immortality.. perhaps something along the lines of this water clock, whichmeasures time, yet cannot stop it - still, it divides time into segments, which in a way is



DA VINCI THE DOPPLEGANGER (Con’t.)a step towards controlling it - if immortality can be divided into segments, it might implyit has a beginning and an end - most importantly an end.. but where can I work?

OSTANES

We will call Hephaestus up here from the Underworld - perhaps you can work at hisforge - he is a master of metalworking, and has all the tools - it could be a workingpartnership..

OSTANESOh, no - we can’t have that down here - this is the Netherworld, and below us is theUnderworld - plus we have Greek gods floating all over the place - you see it’s clearlyimpossible..
