PENTECOST: Actions Speak Louder than Words Several years ago at a prayer service for Kindergarten, First and Second Grades we discussed the
following theme: Actions Speak Louder than Words. At the beginning of the service a First Grade
girl stood at the podium and described in a clear and very bold voice that how we act gives more
significance to what we say. Since I consider that idea somewhat sophisticated for children in the
First Grade, I started the service by asking the three classes if anyone could tell me what it
means to say, “Actions Speak Louder than Words.” One young Second Grader took the
statement much too literally and said, “Father Greg, it means that actions have a bigger sound
than words.” After I shook my head the hands of 50 children were in the air. One after another
they gave a literal interpretation to the statement “Actions Speak Louder than Words.”
Nevertheless, it wasn’t long before a First Grader with a small and timid voice said, “It means

READINGS, REFLECTIONS AND PRAYERS
Prayer Corner Sunday Readings in a Word
FIRST READING Acts of the Apos-tles 2:1-11
On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was sent to the disciples in the form of fiery tongues. They began to speak in different tongues “as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.”
RESPONSORIAL PSALM 104:1,24, 29-30, 31, 34
Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.
SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 The apostle Paul wrote that there are many gifts but the same Spirit, different ministries but the same Lord.
GOSPEL READING John 20: 19-23
Jesus appeared and told the disciples, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you….Receive the Holy Spirit.”
In every generation, O God of Easter glory,
you send forth your holy Creator Spirit, to
breathe on the world your love has fashioned
and to make it come alive!
Fulfill the promise of these Fifty Days with the
abundant harvest of your Spirit’s gifts. Bring
forth in the lives of all of us born of water and
the Spirit, the love, joy and peace your
Spirit’s fire bestows.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who sends us the Spirit of truth from you,
and who lives and reigns with you in the unity
of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

~ FR. GREGROY CHISHOLM SJ. CONT. ~
that what you do is even more important than what you say.” I looked at her and congratulated
her on her answer, then asked her to repeat it. A great sigh, the kind that only enthusiastic children
are able to utter, went through the 40 or so kids who were waiting to give their version of the an-
swer. When I asked them how on Mother’s Day did they demonstrate their love for mom, rather
than just say they loved mom, another 70 hands went up.
The first Pentecost described in the first two chapters of Acts of the Apostles would have been a
significant failure unless the actions of the apostles spoke louder than their words. Don’t misunder-
stand me, the words that Peter and the other Apostles spoke were powerful. Through the gift of the
Holy Spirit they spoke like men whose tongues were on fire. They put the life, death and resurrec-
tion of Jesus Christ into a clear perspective for the people assembled in Jerusalem that day. Never-
theless the words would have meant little if these same disciples had not been people whose lives
reflected the ideals expressed in the teachings about Jesus. The Acts of the Apostles demonstrates
the uncountable number of ways which these followers of Christ lived the words which they spoke.
Pentecost is a time at St. Charles Borromeo/Resurrection when we emphasize the actions which
speak louder than the words. We emphasize the need to do something that reflects Love for God
and neighbor. When a person is on fire in the Holy Spirit, that person must DO something. At
Pentecost we celebrate the whole idea of ministry, acting out our faith, in the church. We are all,
from First Graders to Octogenarians, called to ministry in the Body of Christ. If you can jump rope,
you can minister. If you can shoot a basketball, you can minister. If you can drive a car, you can
minister. If you can polish your nails, you can minister. Actions Speak Louder than Words.
The Passing of Fr. Cyprian Davis, OSB
Fr. Cyprian Davis, OSB, black Historian, Educator and Benedictine Monk passed away on May 17
at 84 years of age. Fr. Davis was on the faculty of St. Meinrad Archabbey, in St. Meinrad, Indiana.
He was also on the faculty of the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University in New
Orleans. Fr. Davis is best known for his outstanding History of Black Catholics in the United
States first published in 1990 (I understand that a new and updated edition is forthcom-
ing). Fr. Davis is also a founding member of the Black Catholic Clergy Caucus in the United
States.
His passing is felt deeply by those of us who have been inspired by both his writing and
speaking. Fortunately there have been many men and women who have been moved to follow the
intellectual path blazed by Fr. Davis. Just recently, for example, I read an article about a new
contribution to Black Catholic History authored by Dr. Shannen Dee Williams titled Subversive
Habits: Black Nuns and the Struggle to Desegregate Catholic America After World War I.
