Book of poems around the themes of Equality, Diversity and Cohesion, written by children for children. Poems were contributed following workshops between Sefton's Complementary Education Service and the year 6 cohort across all schools.
Citation preview
Valuing children as unique individuals,
each with their own personality,
background, appearance and abilities,
is what is behind our commitment and
ethos to equality, diversity and
community cohesion within Children,
Schools and Families.
I am therefore delighted that over
1700 Year 6 pupils across over 40 of
our primary schools have now taken part in an
equality and diversity workshop that has been created and
delivered by Peter Yip and Ann Kelly from the Complementary
Education Service. This workshop was developed to promote greater
understanding and knowledge of the increasing diverse school
population that we now enjoy in Sefton and to help our children
explore equality and diversity themes that promotes
understanding, fosters respect, encourages inclusivity and
champions cohesion.
This book of poems- a collection gleaned from the hundreds that
were produced by the pupils in the workshop provides both an
excellent opportunity for us all to further promote, celebrate
and champion our differences but also to showcase the enormous
talents that our pupils in our primary schools possess and
continue to impress us with!
I congratulate Peter and Ann for all their drive and endeavours,
the school staff for their commitment, help and support but
above all, to all the pupils for all their hard work and
enthusiasm, in making the workshops so successful.
I sincerely hope you enjoy the poems and the sentiment behind
them as much as my colleagues and I have had in reading them.
Peter Morgan
Strategic Director,
Children, Schools and Families.
The aim of our workshop was to prov
ide pupils with an opportunity to explore
and discuss in
an informal but structured manner how
their own attitudes, behaviour and use
of language
can affect the lives of other children
in school who are perceived as being
‘different’
from them. We didn’t know what to expect and w
hat the reaction from the pupils would
be- I am delighted to say that our ex
perience far exceeded our wildest ex
pectations!
For most of the pupils this was the fi
rst time they had encountered the th
emes of
equality, diversity and cohesion. We were highly impr
essed by the mature and measured
manner in which they tackled each is
sue, responding so positively to the ch
allenges we
gave them with a mixture of openness,
a keen sense of right and wrong and
underpinned
with an infectious helping of good humo
ur!
This was no more evident when we as
ked the pupils to write us a poem- th
is collection is
the result. We were genuinely overwhelmed by the
ir ability to articulate their perceptions
,
ideas and beliefs into some astonishingly
frank, honest and inspiring poems.
On behalf of Ann Kelly and myself we w
ould like to thank Steve Jones, Head
of Service
at Complementary Education for all his suppo
rt and guidance and John McCabe from the
Partnership and Communications team at Children, Schools and
Families, for his hard work
and creative input. To all the schools
that were involved for their warm w
elcome and
eagerness to get involved, the head
teachers for their co- operation, teac
hers and
teacher assistants for their generous h
elp and support. But above all we would
like to say a
huge big ‘Thank You’ to all the 1700
+ pupils we had the pleasure to work
with. Their
honesty, energy, hard work and good
humour was inspiring. They were a cre
dit not only to
themselves but also to their families an
d their schools- congratulations and go
od luck at
your secondary schools.
Just keep on remembering -
We are all different – but the same!!

Feelings are hurt when people call us namesNames may seem funny, but they are not,They are hurtful in so many different ways.Feelings turn to sad feelings when people leave you outThey leave you out just because you’re different from themor the odd one out.People try to change because they are being bullied When they are perfect just as they areThey must stay the same it’s the bullies who should change. So please don’t hurt people’s feelings Because in a few years you could be the odd one out, beinglonely and wandering about.Elle - Holy Family Catholic Primary

doesn’t matter if you’re big or small
It doesn’t, it doesn’t
It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white
It doesn’t matter even if you’re Asian or Scouse
Gay or lesbian, no matter at all.
miracles may happen, miracles may not
But hopefully there will, now that is our plot!
I am tired of the devil
I am tired of this stuff
I am tired of this business- just can’t get enough!
Tired of being picked on, oh so tired
of being the only one who is different
Just can’t believe it, oh I really can’t
If it carries on, it will break my heart
don’t know what to do, you don’t know how it feels
It all depends on you.
If you want to be my friend, it doesn’t matter if
your black or white.
I don’t like being as victim, I don’t like being skitted
I don’t like any of that, oh I really don’t.
