hello

Sophia LauEditor-in-Chief

there!

Ed’s note

Like how any parent would fret over the name of their newborn, a large proportion of our meetings was spent debating on the name of our “baby”. After much deliberation, we decided to call it - CHASE.

CHASE is a new online publication written by RMIT students for RMIT students. Why CHASE, you might ask? Often, we find ourselves so caught up with our hectic schedules that we lose sight of our simplest motivation in life – our dreams and passions. With that, the Chasemakers hope to reignite the desire of our readers to pursue their dreams and passions. Thus the tagline: Your Dreams, Your Passion, Your RMIT.

In this inaugural issue, we are casting away all that is mainstream and presenting to you – the SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT edition. Embrace your individuality by bringing out your inner uniqueness as the Chasemakers uncover the Quirky Students Next Door in SIM and five simple steps to achieving the perfect Summer Glow. See how the team tries tie-dyeing and dip-dying for the first time ever in A Good Day to Dye Hard. Feeling hungry? Follow the team as we scout for hidden hotspots around the SIM proximity, perfect for your insta-phototaking. Check out potential locations for your graduation trip and bust myths about sleep debt and fruits. To end off, we’ll share how keeping fit doesn’t necessarily mean having to hit the gym.

SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT is proudly brought to you by the Chasemakers. Enjoy!

Inspired by the story of the last missing princess of Russia’s ‘Anastasia’, SIM-RMIT Annual Bash & Pageant 2012 was a night with live bands, fashion galore and mysterious masquerades.

The Secret Revealed4 October 2012, ZoukIt was a long night of partying, good music and fashion at the SIM-RMIT Bash and Pageant. Featuring the theme “Masquerade”, the Bash received an overwhelming response of 1200 attendees. It is the second consecutive year with tickets sold out before the actual event. The highlight, of course, was the pageant contestants who strutted down the runway with alluring confidence, donning apparel sponsored by Fun fit, Harley-Davidson® and Forever 21. The pageant winners won the judges’ content with their amazing physique and charisma. Congratulations to Rio Ho and Tessa Natalia Hogan on being crowned Mr and Miss SIM-RMIT 2012! Kudos to the Bash Team for making it happen once again. Be sure not to miss the upcoming event of the year, SIM-RMIT Bash and Pageant 2013! By Joreen Chua

Camp Ninten-Go 29 – 30 December 2012

Camp Ninten-Go, conceptualizes from the nostalgic old school video games of our childhood days which we often reminisce upon.

The two-day Orientation Camp was held at Jalan Bahtera Campsite, with 240 enthusiastic freshmen echoing their whacky cheers and showing off their outlandish campfire mascots. The finale of the camp was the Annual Orientation Final Clash, where all the Orientation Groups racked their brains to devise the best strategy to keep their group’s ‘lollipop’ intact.

Perfect Summer

GlowHolidays are just around the corner! There’s no better way to spend them other than having fun and getting yourself rollin’ under the sun. Here’s a guide from CHASE with 5 simple steps to getting the perfect tan without the pains of sunburn and skin irritations.

By Kenneth Wong

Step 1: The Perfect Tan Starts In The ShowersExfoliate evenly. The top layer of skin regenerates naturally every two weeks. Apply sunscreen lotion as the base, acting as a moisturizer for the skin before tanning.

Step 2: Knowing Your Skin TypeDepending on your skin type, you may get tanned or even sunburned easily. Knowing your skin type will help in getting the perfect tan.

Type 1: Pale skin with freckles, red or blonde hair, blue, green or hazel eyesType 2: Very light brown skin, blonde or light brown hair, blue, green or hazel eyesType 3: Light brown or olive skin, light to dark brown hair, hazel or brown eyesType 4: Brown or dark brown skin, dark brown or black hair, brown eyes

Step 3: Go Bask in the Sun To keep your skin moisturized, apply a coat of tanning oil or tanning lotion. When your skin feels hot, turn over. How long?Type 1: Limit your sunbathing to 7 - 10 minutesType 2: 15 - 20 minutes Type 3: 30 minutesType 4: 40 minutes but never more than 60 minutes

Step 4: Post SunbathingAfter sunbathing, DO NOT hit the showers immediately! Your body needs AT LEAST 2 hours to let your tan develop and hitting the showers within this period stops the tanning process.

Step 5: Moisturise, Moisturise, MoisturiseMoisturize twice – once immediately after showers and once more when skin has dried. Moisturizing after a shower helps with the absorption of the moisturizer. Steam from the showers opens up your pores. Repeat this process to help your tan last longer.

Bumping shoulders with someone wearing the exact outfit across the street is a major fashion faux pas! So start digging out your old clothes and create something uniquely different. Try your very own DIY dip dye and allow your individuality to shine through.

By Kenneth Wong

Using a large pail or basin, fill the boiling water deep enough to get the desired colouring. Add fabric dye and salt. Mix it well. Remember to wear your gloves to prevent the dye from touching your skin.Note: Follow product instructions when mixing.

Prepare The Dye1

Ensure the fabric is damp before dipping the fabric to desired level. Lift the fabric up slowly after dipping it for 10 seconds to give it a gradient effect.

Let the Dyeing Begin2

Allow fabric to dry for at least 6 to 8 hours.

Leave it Hanging3

Hand wash fabric until the water runs clear. Then, machine-wash the fabric in detergent.Note: Expect some colour run from the excess dye.

Placing the fabric on the grate, use the squirt bottle to add colour. Be sure to flip the bundle over and dye both sides of the fabric.

Colour Me Bright3

Fill the squirt bottles with the dye mixture.Prepare the Dye1

When completed, wrap it in a plastic bag for 6 to 8 hours. Machine-wash the fabric in detergent. Voila! Your knot dye creation is born.

4 Setting the Dye

Prepare a damp fabric. Next, spiral the fabric outwards to achieve the pattern. Tie the bundle with raffia or rubber bands.

Israel-Jordan Pilgrimage Many have asked “Why Israel?” despite the GAZA bombing fiesta. Perhaps there are many untold truth about Israel you may not have heard of. Prepare yourself for a mysterious and exotic adventure where your bible may just come alive!

Arrived at Ben Gurion Airport after an arduous 14 hour-long flight! Went through countless of questioning by the custom officials due to the strict physical security. We did not allow the impediment at the airport to dampen our mood. Instead, the cool climate (unlike the “sauna” in Singapore) welcomed our presence.

First stop was to Caesarea Maritima where we had our lunch at a sea view restaurant and tasted one of Israel’s national dish known as Hummus.

Sea of GalileeAway from the hustle and bustle lifestyle in Singapore. The renowned Sea of Galilee represents the sea of serendipity. It was calming to the mind, body and soul. The boat ride started with the tour group singing our Singapore National Anthem harmoniously. In the midst of doing so, a dole of doves flew past our boat. The sight was truly MAGNIFICENT!

NazarethShepherds were seen herding cattle and sheep along the way. I never thought I would live to see something so ancient!

The Nazareth Village features houses, terraced fields, wine and olive presses, all built to resemble those that would have been in the Galilean village in the 1st Century. Actors were dressed in period costumes and there were on-the-spot demonstrations of domestic farming and craftwork of the past.

Golan Heights was known to be a war zone. Speaking of which, do you know that girls in Israel have to serve in the army? Singaporean girls should count their lucky stars to be exempted. So girls, please be appreciative of those “Ah Boys To Men”.

‘Mary’s Boy Child’, a song we sing every Christmas, sums up what happened a long, long time ago – the birth of Jesus Christ.

Today, Bethlehem is a city under the Palestinian Authority. It used to be inhabited by one of the oldest Christian communities but now has a Muslim majority. We headed to the Church of the Nativity to witness the birth place of Jesus in the Manger.

The Western Wall

A.k.a the Wailing Wall. The wall is the only fragment of the Great Temple to survive the Roman destruction. As the name suggests, the Jewish face the wall to wail and pray for redemption and renewal.

Males who enter this holy place have to dress modestly and wear a skull cap which will be provided if you do not have one.

The lowest point on the face of the earth is the Dead Sea. The name was given because there is almost no vegetation or animal life there due to the high salt content.

Guests like us can relax at the beach, float on the surface of the water and bathe near the sea in thermo-mineral waters. The Dead Sea products are well known for their replenishing, rehydrating and recharging results to the skin. AHAVA being one of them.

Interesting Fact: On the day of Sabbath, no work was to be done. Even pressing the lift was considered work! There is an automated lift specially for the Jews. You wouldn’t want to take that cause it would mean you will take 15-20 minutes to reach from the 15th floor to the lobby, with the lift stopping at every level.

Choose Your Fruit Time WISELYHere’s a fruit fact for you: Fruit consumption right after a meal does not help in digestion. Instead, a ‘traffic jam’ is created in your digestive system. While the intestine is trying to digest the larger meals, fruit sugars left in thestomach will take a longer time to ferment.

Lesson learnt? Try having fruits in between or before meals next time.
